do i need a special tool to take out the old ones and insert the new ones?
the head is going to be taken off to do this also
thanks

I'm only guessing,
but You would need a valve removal tool...
which one would depend on the head...
other than that, a valve stem oil seal just fits over the valve stem like a standard oil seal only smaller.
You can get them for VW engines too...
but they aren't really needed..

Lee, that sounds exactly right.
The head must be off to do this in most cases.
You need to have a tool called a valve spring compressor to compress the valve springs so that you can remove them. Once they are out of the way you can pry off the old seals and clean up the bits that break off them (if they are really old) and then fit the new ones.
I have seen someone replace the seals without even removing the heads! They remove the spark plug and screw in a special air nozzle to apply compressed air. Often the air pressure is enough to hold the valve closed while they compress the spring and remove the collets or keepers and withdraw the spring and spring seat and change the seal.
Either way you need to compress and remove the valve springs to do the job.
Good luck,
Toby 👍

Thread a peice of cord into the chamber through the plug hole then rotate until the piston + rope/cord is tight against the valves.
Valve wont move then!

Never thought of using a piece of cord KKK... but
I suppose in an emergency We would try anything...
Filling the chamber with cord is sort of similar to holding it was compressed air...
but we can carry some cord with us...
I just remembered, My Son broke a valve spring on the way to Valla.
He called into Peter Richards and He gave him a homemade tool that holds the valve somehow...
so he could change the spring without taking the head off
it turned out the spring was a Chevvy One....
I Knew a VW one wouldn't have broken...
I should have taken a pic of the tool....
