subie conversion costing ?

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/55787/subie-conversion-costing

malcolm ·

has anyone done the full costing of putting a subie ej20t in a bug with a transaxle that can handle the torque.including cooling system wiring .
Thanks Malcolm.

seagull ·

Sure ( this is my cost )

WRX motor $1500.00 c/w full loom ecu , cooling system
G50 gear box $3000.00
adapter plate & fly wheel & clutch $1000.00
you add in the small bits to make it fare

Let me know if your going this way as have some G50 & 6 wrx coming down

Dreamers most welcome

malcolm ·

seagull is that your own adapter plate

VWCOOL ·

lots of custom bits and time to mount and install things like cooling system. $10K + if you pay someone else - but I thought you'd be able to guesstimate this yourself...?

ian.mezz ·

I think matt, boof2332 said about $ 9000 with bug gear box,

malcolm ·

vwcool why make and guess when there are 3 + people who have done this conversion on the forum and who might of come a cross some hidden cost or problems ,thats what a forum for to help each other share info,so have you done this conversion.

71superbug ·

neil...let me know about the g50s...price .etc

Brad at Custom offroad has a price list on here somewhere, it was around the $9000 drive in drive out mark. This did not include any gearbox mods or brake upgrades.

So about:

$9000 for the conversion
$3000 for gearbox upgrades
$1000 for brake upgrades.

I have not done the conversion so it's best to talk to people like Custom Offroad, or Matt(Boof), they have costed the project out correctly.

Performance whether it air or water cooled always costs $$$$ :thumb

malcolm ·

always cost and getting harder to get it past the other half, especially when I,m building valve amps and custom speakers as well😵‍💫

VWCOOL ·

lol... aren't you doing a G50 conversion as well?

malcolm ·

915 conversion bought the box off of my engineer $850might need a crown wheel

VWCOOL ·

Sweet... that's why I figured you might be able to figure out what's involved with chopping bodies and fitting radiators etc

vwtyp2 ·

you can buy my T25 with an ej20t for $7500

555bug ·

I'm pretty anal when it comes to $$ as I don't make enough to piss it away. I have a reasonably complete spreadsheet of costs to get my project finished and at this stage the number is just shy of 30K. Keep in mind that this is a body off do it right build and I am very handy so most stuff is being done by me. I just don't think there are any shortcuts if you are silly enough to want a 250~500hp bug. I'm pretty sure though I could get an ej20T in a super in good nick for 5~6K but I would not be happy with the end result. Just my thoughts.

Remember those costs are for NA, there is more f#cking around with the turbo and many more little bits and pieces. I have not done my total costs but its under 10k. I think with wise buying I could complete for 5-6k easy.

malcolm ·

555 hows your bug coming along hows the shifter going ,I,m looking at this 1 due to what a second hand porsche shifter cost plus the short shift kits $400to $900.http://www.cae-racing.de/

My 71 Bay EJ20T Panel.

EJ20T, loom, ECU: 2000
Exhaust: 300
Fuel pumps/hoses: 350
Brakes: 1000
Adaptor: 600
Clutch: 300
Radiator and bits: 500
091 box: 400
Steel for xmember: 200
Bloody hose clamps: lots

I'd say $6500 with me doing all design and fabrication.

Here is my V6 conversion cost which may be of some interest. I did almost everything myself and did it on the cheap side. I used as much as possible from the front cut.

gull ·

ASh :P:thumb

THUDKNUCKLE ·

Water conversions arent cheap,,, it may not be a subi conversion but my rotary baja engine conversion has recepts just over 10k ,, take in to acount that my car and engine never saw another work shop other then my home garage and all work and fab was undertaken by myself ( minus adaptor plate and flywheel)..

Might help a bit when considering a water cooled conversion price, however the non stop smile when it is all finished and finally runs is all worth it.

555bug ·

Malcolm, the shifter works on the bench but there is not a lot of room in the tunnel once you have coolant, hydraulic, fuel, and wiring in there. Options wise I am looking at relocating the hand brake to the side of the tunnel and building a bit of a bulge to fit the mechanism in. The next cost is getting the cable length sorted but I guy I know with a gt40 can do them for sane money. Hopefully the pan will be completed by the end of the year and to be honest that's the biggest issue with my build as all the rest is pretty straightforward.

Baja Wes ·

I guess you can see the variation in pricing here. Your getting prices at the low end like me, being $3500 for engine conversion and rear disc brakes (even less after I sold the VW motor), to $9000 drive in drive out at a workshop, to $10000 for thudknuckle when doing it all himself.

malcolm ·

thanks for all the replys.if I go ahead with the subie conversion in Victoria I have to have a torsion test done similar to kit cars ie clubman 7,s ,cobras. This is because of the suspension mods I,m doing but these will allow me to run the wheel size and track I want legally also porsche 915 gearbox & ej20t would add 50kg,s + out the back.If I go the the orignal motor a turbo type4 I don,t need to have the torsion test done so I,m in a bit of a dilema.
so thanks again for the replys.

Craig Torrens ·

turbo type4:blush

seagull ·

How about we just bring the the rest of the G50 down in the full car , left hand drive but hey I can live with that , throw the donk out & fit a subaru
on to it now ( ! )

:alien

VWCOOL ·

Top idea. Saves on chopping the chassis etc!

boof2332 ·

To do it yourself can save money although time is always the factor.

Just remember with the motors you will have to do a cam belt and seals/...$200, the idler pulleys were just about shot in our last one.$100 and the pretensioner was seeping..$200 oh and new thermostat and water pump we also replace standard...plugs also are about $60-$80.. The crank angle sensor also ended up damaged and they are $320 new($60 used).

Also we used new nuts/bolts/hydralic clamps on water lines etc. Then little things like rubber ducting costs $50 meter, boost controller $120 good thermos $80+. They are not necessities on my car, although are on any conversion we do.

If you do not mind usung stuff in your garage...it can be done very reasonably.

Go and buy some dam brake pads so I can get your gear out of my shed

boof2332 ·

Hey Anthony,

I must have missed that you had decided on an ej20t. Nice patience and focus to stay on track with the super... Neil obviously needs his space back, so go buy some pads.

Sorry I missed you neil, you were a good hour from me anyway. I got the message the day you were leaving.

Matt

seagull ·

I think only Neil really knows what im up to?

I'm not one to boast about things, or how much they cost me etc...
