can you mig weld 4130N chromemoly to steel using the copper wire and argon 54.
rocknrob ·
when in doubt use stainless

Dont weld 4130 with mig, it will become brittle and crack where the parent metal meets the weld material dur to the quenching effect of the gas.
Use tig and double deoxidised mild steel wire.
Some people use stainless or moly wire,
but I prefer mild steel, because on a large item(like a chassis) it is hard to slow the cooling.
The weld may crack with hard wire even with preheating.
Smaller items that will fit into an oven may be ok with preheat and slow cooling.
I am sure that there will be someone on here with more experience.
