and it still didnt change
but today when i was down tinkering i pulled no one lead just out of the dizzy cap so i could see the spark it suddenly started to run perfect put the timing light on and no1 cylinder was going graet timing was good. but as soon as i pushed the lead back in i lost no1 again.
dont know what is happening.any ideas?

yeap im shore. ive got no idea if i dont push the lead all the way in it will run perfect.
Bizarre ·
Are you using copper or silicon leads??
Those silicon ones do funny things
I would start by changing #1 lead again

yeah put the old lead back on still does the exat same thing. its so frustrating.

Hi Mick,
Only explaination:
when You push the spark plug high tension [high voltage] lead into the dizzy cap, its open circuiting
which really can't happen... [usually - unless]
You aren't using VW wire leads -
with silicon leads, anything can happen...
the centre conductor can be broken inside the insulation-
even bending non wire leads, or pulling on them, can break the conductor inside..
VW wire leads are available from most [probably ALL] vw shops.. not expensive.. and never burn out..
insulation might break down due to the heat,[eventually] but it can do that with silicon leads too..
Is the distributor cap a Bosch or Beru? [German]
make sure its all copper inside the hole where You poke number one high tension lead..
I have seen some dizzy caps with plastic still inside them...
a manufactoring fault..
its easy to clean it out... with a screw driver..
best of Luck
