Am doing my research assignment, and came across this... nothing but down down down.... makes me more angry at those guys StarBug pointed out with the pool they filled in the yard.
Luckily my suburb skims in with the Goldcoast shire, our Hinze dam (or however u spell it) is great.

So when are you going to be drinking recycled sewage?
That's what they are trying to do here:puke
At least with a VW you are doing your bit to save water.......lol
MISS VDUB ·
Yeah Mark, just ignore the oil from the roads being washed down into the drains and into the waterways hey?
Recycled water will taste like cool refreshing Volkswagen!

lol, dam straight 😉
But the scary thing is... I just extrapolated the graph, rough guestimation and using basic probability and predictions (learnt in last yrs maths/physics)... and if the decrease in water sticks around that avg fall... we gonna hit zero by march 2007.
i hope i'm wrong...
Dad's work mate Tom, was a MP for the state parliament back in the 80s, was informed that State Parliament was warned about this, the government was told about these predictions, but like most government, they don't haul ass and panic till the poo hits the fan...

chris, check the facts again mate
government was warned....and WANTED to put in the grid...but because so many ppl kicked up a stink, abotu losing houses etc...the 'extra dams' projects were abandoned. They were told we needed more dams dinkeys years ago. But because we were in the 'wet cycle' and had huge rain at the time, no-one beleived them. At the time, we were in a massive wet spell. About 67 days at one point, and the govenrment were saying...look to the future, we'll have huge problems....but no-one listened
IT took for us to have a HUGE drought before ppl started to listen, and understand.
For once, it seems, the government had the facts right the first time. Who knew it could actually happen...the government being right that is.
Me, I'm doing my part. I have rain water tanks...and we recycle our water. I have droght tolerant plants (well, the roses arent, but thats where the water tank & recycled water comes in handy)
And I meant to ask starbug...why didnt the council then get the buggars with the pool 'which has been up since December" on the whole 'pool fencing' & fine them?

what makes you think you already arent?
last i heard, fish pooped and f*cked in the water you drink, water runs off into the dams from farms (so you get some fertilizer and pesticide/herbicide mixed in with your cow poop) and water from surrounding bushland also runs into dams (now with more exotic native endangered animal poop!)
oh, and not to mention all those people who pee in drains, pee in gutters, pee off balconies and dig holes in the bush to bury their poop (yup, thats human poop running into the dams too!)
not to mention that there has not been a single molecule of water created on this planet for the past few billion years, so you have also been drinking prehistoric poop and dinosaur poop and the poop of the wise old ancients...
come on people... you arent going to be drinking "sewage" any more than you have been drinking it already... they have filters for this stuff and they always have.
so get over it or just go thirsty.

I studied Enviro Management at uni and we visited 3 waste treatment sites in Melbourne, this included the Huge Werribee sh#t farm. They told us that the treated water is actually cleaner than drinking water (the irony is if they put it back into the bay it would be considered pollution but thats another story). They told us that they have offered it to business, homes etc and no one wants to quote "drink their own crap". So now they use it to wash down equipment. I wish people would get over drinking recycled water, although the media doesn't help with stories like "are you already drinking your own sewerage etc".

I was talking with some mates about this the other day, and we're all engineers, and we all just thought, "well so what", water purification technology is pretty advanced these days. And the pommy dude here was telling me that London has been recycling certain water systems for a long time. I just can't see what the big deal is. Those backward yokels who are afraid of "stuff they don't git" are gonna have to get over it, 'cause we're not likely to be getting any more water anytime soon. Most global climate models suggest that Australia is likely to become drier (overall), if current observed trends continue, regardless of whether humans are the cause of the change or not. And like what's with growing cotton and rice in Australia? Really!
toplessbug ·
BEB is quite correct
cast your minds back to the 80's and recall the outcry over the wolfdeene project ,goss lost the forthcoming election over this and a couple of other issues ,was to be much bigger than hinze and right in the center of a huge projected growth area, well the projections are correct and its impossibile to build it as its subdivided now and they are still bitchin about a new dam at traveston crossing
BiX ·
A few things to think about.
- The media has to take alot of the blame for their coverage of the water recycling issue. The water is treated to a standard higher than that already in the dams, but the media always says "sewerage recycyling" or similar comments, instead of "recycled water" which gives the public the wrong impression.
- Last time i checked Murray Bridge residents (end of the Murray in SA) were drinking water that had already been drunk, treated and released 5 to 8 times..... just they didn't know it.
-Brisbane dams do have inflow from towns upstream.......
-The rainfall predictions for aust are indicating that the average rainfall will slowly decrease over time, while the varability will increase. Eg long term less rain, but worse droughts, and bigger floods.
- The 10 yr sliding average rainfall for the mary river catchment above the proposed dam, shows a significant decrease in rainfall over the last 15 years, is this a long term trend (remember most rainfall stations in qld have only recorded since 1890's not a really good data set to show long term trends) or is it a natural cycle of 20yrs or 50 yrs or similar?
- Dams arn't the best option, with the large current varability and the increase in varability that will occur, dams will have to have huge storages to give a reliable yeild.
- We should be making better use of the current water we have, recycling, all new homes to have large (eg 10m3 + of storage) rain water tanks, all exisitng homes as much storage as possible, along with many other options for water managment.
- The PUBLIC ARE DUMB!!! sorry to say it, but until the water stops flowing in their taps, not enough people will care to worry about water supply. The government needs to listen to the specialists and respond with long term (eg 50yr) plans to provide a sustainable water supply. Spending a few billion now for recycling etc is better than having to relocate 1,000,000+ people in 3 yrs time when we run out of water, and the financial loss due to stopped production!!!
Ok sorry for the rant, this is what i do for a living..........
The link above concerns a NSW recycled water issue.
If recycled water was as safe as the is made out, why won't those same people give assurances?
Our union asked the Minister if he would be prepared to shower in the recycled water he expected firefighters to use - he wouldn't!

To give you an idea of how it is impossible to get away from water with poo in it, back in 1973 when I was trekking to the Everset Base Camp in Nepal, I went down to the banks of a fast flowing mountain stream for a wash. The water was freezing cold because it was not more that 50 kilometres from the terminal morain of the glacier that it came from. It already had a pooey smell. Of course I washed in it. I stank. That water would be used and re-used thousand of times before it entered the Bay of Bengal after travelling down the Ganges River.
The Base Camp is a huge litter and rubbish pile with poo everywhere. You can tell where a county's base camp was by finding food packages in their language. There is poo all the way to the peak of Mt. Everest. (And tragically, some corpses.)
One of my primary school teachers told the class, when explaining how recycling works, that at some time in our lives we would breath in one of the molecules of gas in Julius Caesar's dying breath. To put it more crudely. Sooner or later you will smell an Eskimo's fart.
We all really do need to get over this problem with recycled water. It already is recycled. It is almost certain that one of the molecules unside me right now was once in a dinosaur.

An educational program probably needs to be made then televised to the public showing the differences and how its just as good/better.
People are stupid. Woodridge drivers are a joke... but anyways, we have little other options. Already propositions for 3 main infrastructure, including wyaralong Dam and Cedar Grove Weir, Tugun Desalination Plant and Western Corridor Recycling Scheme have been made. The recycled water, due to the stupid public outcry, is only going to be used for industry. but altogether, its gonna bring in another 96,000 ML/A (Megalitres (10^6 litrs) per annum).
Its only a short to mid term solution, the population in SEQ (south east Queensland) is growing by 50,000 to 60,000 people per annum, due to Queenslands current great economy. I know of more people moving up from NSW to SEQ than people moving down.

Back in the80's a test was done on water purity -now I don't know if water purity is the right term but microbes per million I think the term was so don't jump on me- with European water supplies. London water came out very near the top and at the time everyone knew it was recycled countless times but right at the bottom came bottled water! Perrier was bottom and Evian was next and to think people were buying bottled for exactly the reason of it being better, then it was pointed out what Evian spelled backwards was naive. Mind you London water did have a nice chlorine smell to it.
Jusy a thought here, if they can build gas and oil pipelines thousands of miles long then why not water pipelines from places such as the far north to replenish water supplies down south during the norths wet seasons + it would be going downhill (north to south)all the way so no pumps would be needed!! Just a joke (the pump part that is).

Tis y they speaking of Peter Beattie's water grid proposition :P
Doug Sweetman ·
Chris, what you have to realise with recycled water being used in industry is that it backs out fresh water to be used by public.... And Industry use something like 70% of the potable water in Perth as it is, so thats definetely the best place to start trying to save water.
I wish our dams had as much as 27% in them. Mundairing overflowed in the late 90's (shame I missed seeing it), but since about 2002 / 3 has been under 25%. We have had water restrictions in place here since I dont know when....... but councils will still water their thousands of square meters of grass during a thunderstorm...... when are we going to realise we live in an arid country, and start planting natives instead of lawn ?
I dont recall any proposal to use recycled water in Perths grid...... the KWRP (Kwinana Water Reclamation Plant) only treats industrial process water, and the treated water is then sold back to the companies that feed it. There was never a plan to use it for drinking water.
I think Desalination is the technology that will keep Australia in water in the future (unless the WA government coughs up $3 or $4 billion to put a pipeline in from the Kimberley) - just look at what countries that are really dry, like Israel do. They have been using Desal for years - we just need to be considerate with what we do with the outfall (which is only 2 - 3 times more salty than sea water anyways).

Hi BiX, water resource engineers should be very helpful then Hehe.
Well, for all yas anyway....
its a position paper due today, but its a group assignment that will continue thoughtout this semester afterwoods though.
Its about Urban water management of SEQ, and my 'microtopic' i have to individually explore is "Reducing demand for Potable water", and relate it to my field of study (Architecture). So i decided to discuss the background of urban water, and then describe how architecture in the home can assist in reducing hte demand for potable/tap water resources, and therefore reduce pressure/demand on the slowly depleting supply, so it allows more time for the state government of QLD to impliment their supply solutions.
Things like water saver shower heads, Rain water collection from the gutters, and other household technologies that preserve, collect or regulate water usuable would be great, if anyone out there can mention any. Simply i will discuss these, show figures, and give other solutions...
i'm trying to keep architecture related... and don't want to cross into the industrial design field, but i think i will anyways.
bajachris88 ·
the uni wishes for the group submission at the end of semester to be pretty thorough in regards to urban water management of SEQ, that they are requesting that for extra credit to the assignment, it be put up and published on wikipedia.org
So BiX, if u got some great material, or personal documents of study etc, i can reference ya in etc. as ur an insider and all into the topic. And if hte group goes ahead with the wikipedia.org publishing, ur name will be up there.

I thought london's water had gone through peoples system 7 or 8 times on average.

The state government has some pretty good fact sheets on this. have you done up a flow diagram showing the current water cycle through a house compared to a water wise one? with grey water reuse, rainwater tanks etc? If you had more time, i think i may have a full model of a house water cycle, and you can then try different saving methods and see how it responds.
bajachris88 ·
I have gotten some excellent fact sheets from the state government web sites, will keep an eye for that cycle though....
its due in 5 pm... and due to 2 other assignments being down this week, being sick like a dog, work, etc.... i'm leaving it to the last minute, but will be done... Dam uni life.

Simultaneously increasing the average IQ of both states!
There USED to be enough water for everybody when we all ran around under the sprinkler, sliding down the slip n slide, hosing down the cement so we could play cricket bare foot.... or if you were like me, hosing down the cement so you could use it as a skid pan and see how sideways you could get on the pushy without stacking. If we stuck to the old population level and all looked after the water as we do today, as well as all getting the rainwater tanks which are now compulsory when you build (NSW at least) we'd all be fine.
So I make these rule. No more than one offspring each. Better still, dont have any kids, that nappy washing puts far too much poo in my recycled water. No more immigration. No more building in already water drained areas. These rules will take effect once my house is built... with the extra $10,000odd worth of plumbing for tanks and pumps and grey water etc
I have another novel solution gained by my experience in watching the condensation pour out the bottom of my car and my house in summer when the A/C is on. We build the worlds biggest mo fo aircon system, one that can be seen from pluto. This system will blow cool air over the cities while flooding the valley below with all the condensation from the summer humidity that we get.
Perhaps a more realistic solution though is for us to pay for our water instead of being almost given it for free. That will stop people from wasting it far more so than the threat of some water patrol car. You might hose down the back step because nobody can see and you wont get caught. But you wont do it if thats going to cost you $5, you'll go grab the broom.

Britain has been recycling water for years i perticular London. The water tastes fine, no worse than"fresh" water over here. In britain they also have water meters that get checked like your electricity, the more you use the higher the bill.

okay...let me make this even simplier....and this is what i tell my friends...
Question. so...u wont drink water thats been treated time and time again...because it was onc sewerage?
Answer....no
Q. Why
A. Cause people peed and pooed in it.
Q. Didn't u go to lcoal public pool?
A. Yes...
Q. Did u ever swollow any of the water?
A. Of course...y?
Q. Do u honestly think every person jumping into those pools got out to pee? ANd the little babies? really? And don't forget...those little ones can poo quicker than the parents can get them to the side and get them out...
A. But they use chlorine...so u doesnt affect ppl...
Rebuttal: well....i guess its pretty obvious.....the government would do the same thing...with more treatment cycles, stronger chemicals etc. SO either stop drinking the damn pool water...or accept...ur already have drunk 'sewerage' ...and its okay...u didnt even grow a second head!

WATER
It has been scientifically proven that if we drink 1 litre of water each day, at the end of the year we would have absorbed more than 1 kilo of Escherichia coli bacteria found in faeces, in other words, we are consuming 1 kilo of poo!
HOWEVER, we do not run that risk when drinking beer (or rum, whiskey, vodka, other liquors) because alcohol has to go through a distillation process of boiling, filtering and fermenting.
So,
WATER = POO
BEER = HEALTH
Free yourself of Poo, drink BEER!!!
It is better to drink beer and talk shit than to drink water and be full of shit.
