I use Valvoline 20W50. You can get it in 10 litres for about $27. It's good to buy it that way when you own three vdubs👍
Midlife crisis ·
I use penrite HPR30 in both engines 1600dp and 1800 type 4 .

yeah i was thinking a hpr 30 or 50
or is it better to be a 20w50

Used GTX2 for years... that or valvoline will do the trick withouyt wasting $ in any Veedub 1600. Change every 3000 miles

cool thanx will go out and get some today.

Castrol recommends GTX 2 for air cooled VWs...

I'd personally steer away from Valvoline, due to the high content of foreign particals and detergents.
Whatever oil you use, I'd recommend a squirt of Morey's in the sump. It's the thing to do if you're concerned about long term life of the motor, which you must be since you're asking for advice on oils...

yeah? Is this 'pub talk' or do you have actual experience or documented evidence?
Nothing wrong with detergents in oil, BTW...it keeps things clean

I have seen this first hand in various tests done on various oils, and see it with my own eyes at the bottom of a new bottle of oil. Detergents are added to allow the oil to gain better adhesion on moving parts (by breaking surface tension), but they also allow water in the oil to migrate to the surface of the companents, and into joints, which is why it's usually a bad thing to leave an engine sit for a while.
I don't know everything about oils, just a bit, gained over the years in my father's and then my own workshops (mechanic, engineer, vehicle restorer). As for Morey's oil and additives, I have had first hand experience with adverse conditions where the oil has saved the motor from damage (one case: 302 Windsor V8 powered Series 3 Landrover carrying 1.5 tonnes of workshop equipment at 120kph plus for over an hour after loosing oil pressure entirely due to hose failure (remote Chrysler oil filter unit). The motor was running Pennzoil with 25% Morey's before the oil was pumped out onto the road. Oh, and after replacing the hose and refilling with oil, that motor served another few years and upon disassembly, there were no signs of abnormal wear).
Oils ain't oils...

ive seen perfectly healthy vws drop dead for no reason other than detergent oils being used
im sure marcel can tell u about his experience with it too
i know he had a motor die from it too

I would think oils are a bit different than they were in the 60's, as are cars, as are people.

i just meant he started out in the 60s and still works on a fair few to this day
i dont know what the fuss about these new fangdangle oils
ive heard that magnectic oils are pointless in a vw tho

I use ACE 30.. which i like.. bit exxy, but i like using an oil which was DESIGNED for aircooled engines only..

I know what you mean. Experience does have merit.
I just get Penrite HPR30 in bulk 60litre drums and use it in all vehicles I own, old Holdens, VW's, motorbikes.
Maybe it's not 'the best' oil, but it sure aint 'the worst' or most expensive.
I used to put my old oil from other vehicles into an old clunker 253 V8 that somehow used to use up oil, even though it didn't blow smoke or drip. Good way to get rid of unwanted oil?

cheaPest "quality oil" and often.
the frequency of change is usually better fo a vw than the quality.
yes. if you put a good detergent oil into a "dirty" engine, you can remobilse all sorts of nasties. so, when you buy your dub, do a couple of real quik (1000km) changes like a flush. altough i dont recommend it, when we flood a motor and oil turns to milk & cream, do a couple of flushes with deisel and then another couple with oil. works for me....

many many years used to put the dirtbike oil (which had only done 500-1000km) into the subaru for another 8-10k. it didnt know no diff. sold it at 230km no oil use. but then at 200k, a scoob is only just run in. haha.

yep I agree. But i reckon GTX2 today is better than what was winning formula 1s in the 60s.. I change every 2500km or so in my VWs, but I flog hell out of 'em
Joel ·
i was putting shell helix in my first bug back when i was a poor P plater as it was the cheapest
i dont think it did my engine any favours

but my godfather had an XF with an absolutley stuffed engine
(went thro 22L of oil going from Lismore to adelaide and back)
and he recons the only thing that kept it going for so long was putting that shell helix worn engine oil 60w i think it is in it
