got the decklid stripped, beaten, bogged and primed, although it's still a bit wet in the pics.
ren ·
here are a few bits and pieces....conti 145's I scored from Hertz (thanks mate), the first bit'o'bling (rear window shade), painted the pan w/rust kill - good stuff, although you wouldn't want to drink a pint of it.....some lovely roof rust which won't be going anywhere! might get some of that waxoyl stuff for it, and the rims I'll be using, which are from CaffinePusherMan's deceased beetle, betty-lou......they are powder coated cherry red, and will have the 1.75" cracker's installed. The bug rims are 1.6cm closer to the guard lip (offset-wise) but with 145's front and back they shouldn't rub.
ren ·
ruckus' bug, Elmo, which will look very different soon, and Tanaka hitting the strip! (nature strip, anyway).....our neighbours love us! they really really do. Especially the mum across the road, right rob?
ruckus ·
Dayum! How nice is red oxide?! Decklid looks tops. Full steam ahead this week.
And yeah she might love you ren but I don't play it like that mate.

Thats awesome Ren

1. cleaned up the door cards....shinin'
2. here you can see the new door seals (although it's a small pic). These are from The DDB in Oregon, USA. They are a seal/door pinch all in one, and attach to the car, not the door. Heard some good reviews from buyers on the samba, and they seem to be the goods.
3.got this replacement door from PaulR, little did I know of the 2 tab vs. 3 tab dilemma. Now I have to torch the hinges and hope I can wack the pins out, to do a switch. Take ages to re-install the crusty old rubbers etc..
Only $165 landed too!
4. 65' bitch.
5. Sold to 'rene'
ren ·
1. got the glovebox lid back from ross's house in the 'rak. Good to see him throwing a 'dub amongst the pigeons' (or amongst the cayenne's anyway). the lid will come in handy when I need to get some lotus white acrylic colour matched. easier than taking in the roof.
ren ·
I love this part of the car.....but is 'cowl' really a word? we'll look into that one...
decked dubby ·
Looking forward to seeing this....excellent.:thumb

Wow someone has been a busy boy, when is it cruisin over for a lowering?
ren ·
1. I'll use Bibendum instead of the usual mobil pegasus, bottom corner of each front guard. Courtesy of CaffinePusherMan's 'pipe pusher' brother. Nice guy!
2, ,4 , 5 - Used some rustkill stuff on the under side of the front guards, it's black, and should help prolong the life of these things for a while yet.
3 - started the strip disc to metal/rough up, wax/grease remover, bog, etch, red oxide routine on the rear quarters. Need them done this week for sure. Looks really patchy, because the rattle can etch is so damn thin. haven't finished bogging that part anyway, so will need to take that etch back again. No garage, no love.
6. 2 tab hinges. Who needs them? got this replacement door from paulr (great guy), and after spending ages changing all the crusty-ass rubbers over, realised it's a 67-69 door w/old style handle/lock, but new style hinges. Now I need to get the pins out and convert it to 3 tab. Fun.
ren ·
Here it is pre-purist nut'n'bolt 5 star resto. previous owner took those guards and bonnet though.
ren ·
Got a good start on the stereo install. This is a pancake sub box to match the pancake engine. It fits nicely in the rear luggage area, and will later be tarted up with some travel-dest stickers, leather straps/handle, and leather corners, just like a suitcase. Will have to paint it (maybe red ox) or cover it with something. I'm using my trusty 1gb shuffle, w/4 channel amp and cervin vega 5" splits.
ren ·
Roofrack I picked up at bacchus marsh for $150! lucky I was there early. Owner said it was for square, so I bought it with a glimmer of hope that it would fit the notch, and luckily I was right! As you can see in my signature/selecta rendition, I had banished the roofrack idea to the 'after I get back from Japan bin' with the narrowed bug beam swap/airbags. Bang Bang! Sweet rack. Don't know it's origin though.....the whole thing comes apart with fasteners, which I updated for chromed items (even a rat has to shower once in a while), the only thing I don't like is the suction caps, but hey it's better than a kick in the booty.
On the way home I dropped into bunnings for some 40x8x1100mm lengthes of tassy oak, and some bolts/washers/nulocs, and a can of decking oil (october brown is the colour, since I don't really like the pale wood Flat4 use). It's still lightish, but not yellow. There will be 10 slats, and they are as wide as Flat4, but a little thicker (2mm). and will bolt on at each end pipe, and the middle bar too. Hopefully I'll do this tomorrow and post pics.
ren ·
some more stuff to go on the poor boy. hella reverse light, which is nice and big, and a sunvisor. Since the solid one isn't for type 3, and probably not any dub for that matter, I'll go with the good ol' aussie mesh unit. Hopefully these brackets (which I scored at bacchus) will do the trick! Very happy to find them. Got some 996 Carrera floormats for the front of the notch, even though I'm installing a new charcoal carpet kit (don't like the plastic insert in the front carpet-looks cheap n' 80's, but bad 80's, you know?) so maybe they'll work ok. Can't believe I got sucked into the porsche-vw sisterhood. Isn't that just for dubbers trying to justify their love, madonna style? And these didn't even come from an air cooled 911 either. Oh well, they are expensive looking and plush, so bare feet driving could be on the cards.
Also scuffed the shit out of a hubcap, en route a mission to mimic the old utility/barndoor/kdf style grey painted caps from back in the day. I keyed them with 40 grit good 'n proper, then etched them (twice) then grey primer (twice) which I'll gently rub back and clear coat. Might be shit, might be great. I think it will look nice with the red rims/white walls anyway. Got the idea from the fire-barny that flat4 were selling recently, which by the way was a bargain at around 31 grand.
#hubcap looks a bit shemp, since it has a wd40 spattered on it!

Another type 3 for the roads, Great
ren ·
ok got the rack done today. stained the slats w/decking oil stain.
1,2 after and before staining....
3. B-Dizl being a junkyard dog
4. bolts, washers and nulocs for the slats.
5. the maths
6. drilled out the holes, after breaking 2-3 crap drill bits.
7. drilled one end of the slats, but left the other end so they match up nicely.
8. bolt in one end of all the slats.
9. tip the rack upside down and drill through the metal holes so the slat holes match up right.
ren ·
all done and fitted. Looks alright......and sits super low too, about an inch off the roof at it's lowest point.

a well stacked rack. w/freddy the '54 playing the background.......

Thanks Das. There is actually a small but determined group of us over at the www.thongsforwork.com forums, and we'd love to have you on board. Rather than complaining to the manufacturer as you have, we generally complain to one another, so I'm sure your pro-active thinking would really inspire our members.

Sorry about the door mate. Thats a bugger of a job changing the hinges. I did not know about the different hinges either - Lindon filled me in the other day when i was chasing a door for my type 3. The notch is looking great, not sure about your foot though

Don't be sorry Paul! You were a saviour, since the door doesn't need to be painted. Just have to wait to get to beerdoc's house to get the pin out, then hopefully all will end well!

Fastys ans squares have the same 2 bolt hinge notch have 3 bolt , make sure u have the same door handle and lock mechinism too.
empi
ruckus ·
Thanks Adam I think he's got that down...
ren ·
yeah got a new door today, since I got some advice that changing the pins would be an absolute ass of a job, since the door skin curves over the top of the upper hinge, meaning you probably can't get it out that way, or smack it the other way from that side.
Brian (bagged notch) suggested that cutting and welding the hinges would be easier, so I just got another door. I think it's an OG Gulf Blue colour, which will be nice once the respray is cut back.
ren ·
here is the new door with the right number of bolt holes. 3 is the magic number. door is gulf blue with a dodgy colour match over coat. Will strip it back to gulf and have it mismatching for a little while, then paint it lotus.
Got the door seal off in one neat piece! don't need that because I'm using the pinch/seals from DDB. Beat a few large dents out of the door, which was easy enough.
The 2nd photo shows the inside which is OG colour. Did I mention that I like gulf blue?🙄
ren ·
Got this bug ignition on the advice (from a local VW dealer!) that it would fit a type 3 with an extra hole needing to be drilled. Wrong. Scored a used fasty barrel which bolts up, but it has no key. At least the key from the new bug barrel I bought works! he he..
Installed and ready to fire up the 1600 twin carb now! well not yet, since the engine isn't hooked up....
Also got this super high tech shorter shifter, obviously far more desirable, rare and expensive than a Berg shifter. Also scored a matching lotus white ash tray, and some sunvisors/clips which scrubbed up nicely. Mirror was installed too, as well as shifter.
Headliner was masked off and sprayed with off-white satin vinyl dye, which worked great. It all sagged at first, but then tightened as the dye dried.
ren ·
these seat rail bushes came in from the states yesterday, and were easier to find than expected (heard they were very hard to come by), but they were a bit pricey, at US$65 the set. Smacked them in place w/rubber mallet, and trial fitted the passenger seat which sits nice and tight, with no play whatsoever. Usually they rattle about because of broken/missing bushes. Got the enertia reel seat belts trial fitted, but I'm not sure if it's RWC to mount the retractors on the rear seat panel. Don't know why it would be an issue, but they have to be perfectly vertical, so it's either that, or mount them on the rear floor with an L bracket.
Another pic of the headliner....
ren ·
Steering wheel fitted, which should be white with a semi circle horn ring, but that was in pieces and missing some springs/washers, so just chucked this '70 wheel in for now, and will put the nice one in after Rwc. Also got the enertia reels sorted, mounting them on the rear seat panel, nice and neat, not in the way and the work very smoothly.
ren ·
Got the decklid on, in red ox for now, and the licence plate light, including 12v bulb change over. chucked the 996 mats in the front, because I won't be able to put the front carpet in until front fenders are done and fitted.
All seats now fitted, ahh feels good, and yes I did sit in the drivers seat for 5 minutes picturing the car being finished and on the road....:duh
plastic interior heater box things are half in place, but one doesn't seem to fit, and has a superfluous tube coming out of it (?!). What are these things called, by the way?
ren ·
Some new bling! Well paint and seals anyway, and a new dual circuit master cyl, and brake lines. WCM bonnet/boot seals, and rear tail light seals. Got 2 cans of lotus white pressure pack too, for this and that.
ren ·
seats/belts etc finally in....
ren ·
make shift front floor.....

Is the extra outlet on your heater ducts for the centre windscreen outlet?? Or does a notch have the rear window heater like a Type 34 KG??

Thats the correct steering wheel for a type 3 , also looks like it has the correct horn pushy thing too , white wheels and D horn rings were only fitted to beetles. 71 on type 3s have big fat ugly plastic steering wheels .

Pusherman. Ok so I stole it from a Barina in the hood (st kilda!).....so what?! Like you don't go around stealing rusty vintage roof racks every other weekend.
good point grey57, maybe it's for an optional rear window heater, or could be off a later model that had that option, or t34 or something else, since I don't know if it's og. It is a 311 part though....
......thanks for the info empi, but I'm not sure it's completely accurate, because nearly all of the archived type 3 lit. on samba shows d ring wheels, but yes black seems to be the standard. I just like white!

Adam's going to tell you that's a 34 and you're not playing fair 😉

ren ·
Time for the dirty work, with a huge help from Beerdoc, Ruckus, and DAK002, Tanaka gets bound and gagged, tied to a trailer, and taken to another city, to have his unsightly rotted orifices welded up. Heater channel is the big one, and the front fenders need minor welding, as well as each bottom corner of the both the front and rear windscreens.
Doc played the role of trucky, and sipped tea while dictating orders from a bug seat. I stood around taking photos, and later B Dizzle flashed an expression of urgency/sadness as Tanaka is whisked off. He'll be back with fewer gaping wounds than ever before.

are they new or reco when did you get them bitch?
ruckus ·
*cough*
ren ·
sorry rob! Here are some shots of various boring-ish parts of the car. I've realised that I left all the hard stuff til last. Therefore the progress doesn't look very impressive, but a lot has been done.
ren ·
The wiring diagrams are helpful but I don't have one for a '65 car. All are for 63 or 67-, which means they all have complex indicator stalk/ignition lock/dipper/etc...wheras mine just has the basic cast bit of metal with 4 wires coming out. Also previous owners (not ross!) have changed a lot of the wires, so the colours no longer match up, which is a *&$% when you can't follow the wires to see where they go, because they go into a loom one colour, and come of the other end another. I'll be getting my 'circuit tester' on this weekend. Yeah I know it's XMAS, but I want the grand daddy of all presents; a notch that goes and stops.
ren ·
New regulator, courtesy of a helpful AVD'er.^^^
and the hard to get to /hard to see crap up behind the dash. Not as much fun as it looks, and it looks boring.
ren ·
This guys expression captures my feelings perfectly.....
ren ·
you know you're going crazy when everywhere on the car you look you see faces staring back at you!!
ren ·
Oh! so the coil goes IN the engine? ok, well for now I'll leave it here, since it took an hour......😁 no this is just a bush-mech version of a wiper step down convertor. Haven't tried it yet.
ren ·
Finally got the keys I wanted! The nice die cut VW factory style ones. Thanks Hank!
ren ·
The new dual circuit/dual reservoir brake system, didn't get any photos of the rest of it before putting the fuel tank back in, damn it. Anyway here you type 3 owners can see how I've done it anyway.....the 2 lines run along the exact same route as the old single line. It's a long job, especially when rather than getting new custom shaped lines, you rebend old beetle lines to the shape you need them (dead straight).
ren ·
Braided brake lines, same price as locally sourced rubber ones, got them from the states. Don't be like me though, support
local industry! Globalisation is bad and stuff:duh
ren ·
New tie rod ends/steering damper/ball joints etc...master cylinder too!
ren ·
body repair areas, which make me feel a lot better about the car. They just need a bit of grime/dust to match the rest of the paint better. Good colour match though! The paint dudes did a great job. It's PPG acrylic.
ren ·
Nice new WCM seals too! German baby. (or US?) anyway, they aren't brazilian.....^^^^
ren ·
Engine - with new fuel lines/clamps/filters etc...and YES it has oil in it! I'm still not entirely convinced that engines need oil, but.....oh what the hell I might just use oil to be safe😵🤪
ren ·
ren ·
ren ·
No I'm not replacing my rear window seal!^^^😂 If it ain't leaking, then it's fine. Apparently you can only get cal-look rear window seals for notches at the moment. And if you know otherwise, then don't tell me, because then I won't have a genuine excuse to not replace it! apart from the fact that it's not leaking....yeah....I'm sticking by that one...😉
ren ·
A photo I had to send to my dad who is living in Morocco now. The last thing he told me before he left was basically 'don't buy a vw!' ....he reckons he spent half his life underneath his kombi's and beetles, and being an electician, I had to tease him with this 'I told you so' shot, which yes, was badly set up by my co-mechanic Grigor.😀 :blah
ren ·
Oh and we also replaced some engine seals, which was cool, because it was my first time stripping gear off a type 1 style engine. It was getting dark, so we had about 20 minutes to strip the carbs/links/tin ware/etc etc..and replace the seals and get it all back together again! It was a 3 man effort, and a good learning experience. Yes Ruckus, a super-grigs does exist even when the icky icky is a thing of the past. Good to see.
ruckus ·
Thanks for the update man. I'm not a teacher any more as of 2pm today, so maybe I'll have a life again?!
Man I'm proud of Grigs, and glad to know that his super-powers are available without kriptonite!

ren ·
don't worry doc, it's not another dub! and yes I'll let you know how the engine goes on the first run, but then again you might hear it from Highton anyway.
ren ·
Update - Wiring is now pretty much sorted....I've got wipers, lights/high beams, indicators all round (what a job.....spent hours and hours on this, and in the end the fusebox pins just need some scratching-up. Aahh!😂
ren ·
.......and brake lights, parkers, dash lights, indicator dash lights, just need to get horn working.....that's a confusing little set up.
