Yes, its a sad Day today as Most Australians feel for the Loss of one of Australia's best known identities.
Steve was well known throughout the world as the Crocodile Hunter and an Australian and He really put Australia on the Map in many countries.
I saw some of His TV Show bloopers a couple of days ago
and He came across as a normal Aussie...
I believe He will be sadly missed around the world...
there has never been anyone like Steve....
and there probably never will be....
He was as Unique as some of the animals He showed Us...
RIP Steve Irwin..

Mate I second that, He has done a huge amount for conservation of Australia, fought strongly to have certain areas turned into national parks and nautre reserves. He was dedicated and passionate in what he did. Cheers to Steve.

If you ever had the pleasure/luck of meeting Steve the beers shouldnt be quiet. They should be full of crikies, strewths, thumbs in nether regions and all at about 11 on the volume knob.
he lived hard and true to his heart. God bless ya Steve and condolences to The Irwin Family, thanks for allowing us all the privelege of knowing such a dude !
poor bugger, thoughts to his wife who still may not know as she is in the bush at the moment.

His manager was on the talking box saying he ( Steve ) had been couped up due to bad weather for a few days and they couldnt do the piece they were aiming for for a few days so he went out in the dinghy with a cpl of crew to do some shots for Bindies show, he just couldnt keep still. Hope she doesnt guilt out, freakin cool kid that one.

this is a sad day for australia, and the world...
one of our most vocal conservationists, a man who actually got things done, a man who showed respect and love for all animals has died 🙁
my condolences to his family and friends... his poor kids now have no dad :cry:cry:cry
i liked and respected the guy... he spoke out for those who cannot speak for themselves, i hope one day another person can come along with such charisma and happiness to speak out for the environment and respect for all those creatures that inhabit it.
RIP steve... the world will miss you:cry

I've been watching..and trying to work out time lines....
the news appears to have broken around 2.00pm today...but which time...terri had the kids on a chartered flight back home...
they arrived from tassie approx 4.30.
It seems she knew, but at that point of announcement hadnt told the kids. they have now been informed. Apparently his death wasnt announced until just after Terri knew...from what I can gather, and see.
BUt having said that...to lose someone u obviously love so much, whilst in the public eye...wow.
I wish the family all the best in recovering from such a loss.

my kid is a massive fan, we go every year and still will. He's represents all that Australia should strive to stay in my opinion. Massive loss, my 5 year old is still crying...
Ayton Senna said once when asked about the dangers of F1 - 'it is not as tragic to die doing something you love'.
Hearts/Prayers go out to his family and all in the Beerwah community.
Aussie of the decade, let alone the year.

We book people into Australia Zoo all the time up here at the resorts on the sunshine coast and we always joked about cheering on the crocs at feeding time, but it certainly is a terrible thing to happen. I suppose it was on the cards though but I read on another news website that there's never been a recorded death by stingray before, just goes to show that when your card comes up there's nothing you can do about it.
I found out by the local milk man and thought he was joking around like usual but went and listened to triple J and it was true. such a sad thing to hear about an aussie icon. if any one here has MSN, would you please be kind enough to put an emoticon of a turtle in fornt of ur display name for a tribute to Steve Irwin
thank you

very, very sad for his family. Still I spose with all the risks he took he would have known there was a possibility of this sort of thing happening. Makes you think hard about what's important is life. Personally I think I'd rather see my kids grow up. But no value judgments, he never pretended to be anyone but himself.:thumb
We'll miss you Steve. 🙁

I couldn't beleive it.. When i friend told me, i thought he was kidding too..
I did always joke about him being an idiot getting attacked by animals.. but he was a nice guy!

It seems an almost cruel twist of fate, that Senna died whilst campaigning for better race safety measures, and Irwin died whilst trying to de-mystify the stingray. 🙁
Rest in peace big fella, but only until you get to wrestling some of them ghost crocodiles. We know you'd hate to be sitting still for too long! 😉

yeah its a sad day....lets hope no-one and i mean NO-ONE starts telling his family what they should have done and that he deserved it...
its sad but people do it, which shows that they are the LOWEST form of life on this planet. :beer

always thought his character was a bit wankish, and i guess the majority of aussies had a go at him at one stage or another, but i guess we truly dont know what we've got until it's gone.
gonna miss ya steve. and i agree, dying is done best doing something you love. it would be more a tragedy if he were hit by a bus, than swimming with wildlife shooting footage to help protect the magical creatures of the ocean.
RIP.

What a tragedy. He was always good viewing on the TV. He lived hard and dangerously and has done a lot to demystify crocodiles and other animals.
His passion for the environment was legendary. We will all miss him.
He has put the word crikey back into daily use here in Oz and has spread it around the world.
Steve, I'll toast you when next I have a beer.
The best epitaph that I can think of, is probably your response when the stingray barb sank into your chest.

u gotta feel sorry for the family... Especially last night, TV all pouring all stories and reviews of him and everything, all competing against each other trying to outdo each other (each channel competing)...
would be hard trying to deal with the loss, and then have all those bOzOs with their cameras following u and tv, radio all swomped with the stories of a terrible loss... doesn't really help the family, especially Terry's children. They wouldn't be able to watch the tv for a month or so till it dies down. Rumour has it, the media was broadcasting stories about hte loss before Terry even found out 🙁 How tragic is that...
Schmoburger ·
Such is the way of the media vultures....
amazeer ·
The Daily Telegraph (sydney) has the front 6 pages devoted to Steve. Crikey, I think he's as popular as Di!
Now he can become a true legend. Millions of Americans now know where to find Australia on a map, something that no amount of Johnny's arse licking could ever have done.
Joel ·
sad thing is he'll probably be missed more overseas

the same media vultures that bagged him out, and borught him to tears, no wonder he stuck with Animal Planet and had a low profile on Australian media since. But they forget that in an effort to gain viewers, jeez they shit me.
The majority of the money he got off the film/tv went to buying wetland and habitat, kept very little for himself. Hard to believe that Steve and Terri made their first doco about 14 years ago ... how much did he achieve in such a short time....amazing guy....I wish I had that kind of energy...
nice link, esp...."Where I live if someone gives you a hug it's from the heart."

I still have a lump in my throat 🙁.........can't believe he's gone.......certainly won't be forgotten.

I used to Steve Irwin was an idiot, but then one night when nothing better was on TV I watched his 'blooper' show where he got bitten by snakes, frogs, you name it. I was in hysterics at the things he came out with when he was attacked by animals, but I also thought he was awesome in his attitude and knowledge and scared of nothing... I ended up watching the whole Crocodile Hunter series! It was great for a laugh. :P
I thought it was a joke too when a customer at work told us all he was dead. Then I heard JJJ news and a reporter girl was crying over it. Talk about a freak accident... but if it's time to go, it's time to go.
So full on. He was a dude. I hope his family will be strong, although I doubt if anyone could come close to filling his shoes.
RIP Steve

I cringed when I first saw Steve Irwin on TV - I thought is this guy for real? It wasn't until many other viewings that the passion and love he had for both nature and his family came through. I think what hits home is just that he was a good bloke, believed in his principles, what you saw is what you got, and that he's left those poor babies behind. I doubt there'll be another like him for a long time, but I'm sure his legacy will inspire many kids. RIP.

The way I see it,in the short 44 years that he was with us,he lived life more than most people's entire lives. Truly a great loss.

The animal world has taken revenge on self-deluded animal tormentor Steve Irwin, according to expatriate Australian academic and writer Germaine Greer.
Writing in the British press following Irwin's sudden death, Greer said she had "not much sympathy" for the naturalist if he was grappling with the stingray that killed him on the Great Barrier Reef.
"As a Melbourne boy, Irwin should have had a healthy respect for stingrays, which are actually commoner and bigger in southern waters than they are near Port Douglas," Greer said in The Guardian.
She described Irwin's behaviour as "bizarre", noting the famed incident when he held his baby son while feeding a crocodile during a show at his Australia Zoo on the Sunshine Coast.
"The whole spectacle was revolting," Greer said.
"The crocodile would rather have been anywhere else and the chicken had a grim life too, but that's entertainment at Australia Zoo."
She dismissed Irwin's explanation that he had the situation under control and could not have slipped or stumbled.
"That sort of self-delusion is what it takes to be a real Aussie larrikin," Greer said.
"What Irwin never seemed to understand was that animals need space.
"There was no habitat, no matter how fragile or finely balanced, that Irwin hesitated to barge into, trumpeting his wonder and amazement to the skies.
"There was not an animal he was not prepared to manhandle.
"Every creature he brandished at the camera was in distress.
"The animal world has finally taken its revenge on Irwin, but probably not before a whole generation of kids in shorts seven sizes too small has learned to shout in the ears of animals with hearing ten times more acute than theirs, determined to become millionaire animal-loving zoo-owners in their turn."

Well, I hope Steve rests in peace, but I really feel for Terry and their two children. Just imagine what their life is going to be like growing up knowing that their dad was this famous guy known all around the world, but they won't ever really truly know him or get the chance to know him (especially Bob coz he's so young). What a tragedy!!! My heart goes out towards them.

But wasn't it Germaine Greer that encouraged women in the 70's the burn their bras and hate men?????? Now thats bizarre behaviour !!!!!
I don't think that there is a person out there who would argue that Steve wasn't a bit crazy but he had a heart of gold and the love he had for his family, animals and the environment was clear. His death is a tragic loss and he will be greatly missed by his massess of fans!

all those huge signs and posters with Steve's photo on them...
I can't imagine what it would be like to have a loved one's photo/image everywhere.... after their sudden death...
I was amazed, looking on one of Steve's websites that showed the dates He was on some of the TV talk shows in the USA....
It seems Steve was a household name in the USA before We had even heard of him...

Steve Irwin is a legend in my eyes for what he did and what he stood for. I never knew of anyone who could love such a beast like a crocodile. He had courage and determination to make people aware that all animals no matter how big or how small should have the right to live. I never got the chance to meet him in person but i did meet his manager while driving cabs in townsville a few yrs ago and he told me that he was exactly the same in real life as on screen. Steve accomplished so much in his time that i doubt anyone else will ever do the same. My heart goes out to his wife and kids as they have lost the most loving caring father any one could have.I feel very sorry for his father as he already has lost his wife only now to lose his son. This is one fairy tale that has come to an end.
