Im looking for some heads for a 2332, fk87, ida motor. Looking at running around 10:1 compression.
Ive been thinking about wedgeports, but am prepared to spend good money for a good set of handported heads.
who woukd be worth talking to over there ? Im in NZ and there is no one locally I am aware of...

Get the Wedge Ports and have the manifolds dowelled.
You will need to shim the springs to stop chafing, but may need to make some room to fit your lift.
Craig at Crankshaft engineering can do this for you and some chamber work, to gain some more.

With the wedgies would you stick with the single groove or go to three groove valves ?
dangerous ·
Single groove is the go...I think that is all they come with now days?
55slug ·
Found DRD racing heads in the US - he buys the heads bare, installs 3 groove valves, dual spings and Chromo retainers for 750 US$ - a pretty good deal I think.
HGFS ·
Sure is when you get the standard CB Wedgies elsewhere for the same amount, or these ones that have had special attention. Sounds good

My wedge ports were ordered last week.........
About the best street head that you can get from my research. Going to get a little tidy up once landed. Only running a fk7(been warned of the fk8 due to harmonics, thanks dave) cam though in a sub 2L motor.
dangerous ·
I am not sure if those DRD heads are wedge ports or just ported 044 castings.
If they are wedgies that is a very good price complete.
Make sure you dowell the manifolds and put a shim in the spring to stop chafeing.

Thanks for the advice. I think you know David Gouk ? (Dr Gouk). Hes going to redo the seats and do a bit of port and transitional areas tidy up for me. Definitely a wedge port head.
lugnuts ·
Hey 55slug,what heads are u running at present,im VERY interested :thumb
55slug ·
Running 044s 44 x 37.5, ported by Darren Krewenchuk up in Canada. Just had the seats recut and flow tested them, with IDA manifolds they flow 170 cfm @ .550" lift.
dangerous ·
Darren in Canada does brilliant work.(not Darren at DRD, but he is good too).
What pressure drop? 25" or 28" ?
55slug ·
25" pressure drop. As a comparison on the same flowbench, a set of Heads up ported heads were flowing the same number through the exhaust port !! I think the intakes on those were around 205 @ .600". Thats what David is going to be running on his 2332, K8 combo. I need to keep up !!!
lugnuts ·
Hey 55slug,any idea how much your car weighs, ive got nearly the same combo planned and would be Very happy with a 13.9 eventually.
55slug ·
Its not light, IRS, ZF, no lightening anywhere, with the spare wheel, full tank of benzene and I weigh 230 lbs - I would say at least 1900 lbs, maybe more when I ran that time.
dangerous ·
I understand that CFM is not everything but a few numbers for comparison:
Rod Richardson has welded VW heads with 44x37 and flows 202@.600"(12.20@109.9@1750lbs)
The best VW casting heads we had that came through Crankshaft engineering,
were for an unnamed customer and had 48 valves fitted and guides moved over.
They exceeded 220@25"...not a dragracer.
55slug ·
The heads I have are hugely driveable, I have done a 6hr 550 km trip in its current configuration. Pulls from go to 6500 - 7000 rpm.
Dangerous, in your experience is it possible to exceed the flow numbers in HP ? Its just a rule of thumb I guess ?

Yes it is, with the correct velocity and swirl,
and with optimised timing, fuel tune and runner and exhaust lengths.
But more often than not it is the other way round with VWs.

Dangerous, whats the advantage of putting dowels in the manifolds of the Wedgeports? and shim to stop chafing?
dangerous ·
Hi Bix,
The fit of the manifolds is loose on the studs,
so putting some roll pins through the manifold and into the head,
keeps the match port in place.
This can be a hassle because some times even with all the stud clearance,
the port still needs some matching.

Thanks Dave, Maybe you should go freelance VW specialist? you give out so much advice on here.
I will mention it to Leon. Iam getting matched manifolds, but dowels may be a benefit.
Intially I will be running only dell 40's so will port out a set of empi manifolds to suit, then once i find some larger carbs, put the matched manifolds on.
1916 ·
the drd l6 heads which i am looking at according to the drd website (graph) flow a max of 204cfm on the intake at 0.65, 0.7 lift.
dangerous ·
I couldn't find what pressure drop he uses for his test.
If it is at 28" then that is not comparing apples with apples.
He does good work though.
lugnuts ·
Its at 28".

Interesting combo you have there bix fk-7 bit milder than a W-110 but with more lift and huge heads and std stroke, luck to ya dude :thumb
dangerous ·
204cfm@28" = 192.76@25".....was that at .650" or .700" lift.
How much lift do you run!!?
hellbugged ·
while your on fire Dangerous, whats your opinion on how much to shimm the valve springs???

I got in touch with DRD. He suggested an 043 welded head, 42 x 37.5. His comment was that he has seen 210 - 230 HP made with these heads in similar combos to mine (OC dyno !!). He also stated 11.8 second timeslips are possible - unsure of the weight of car he was talking about... 1100 US for those heads plus manifolds.
The service and value for money I got out of Darren in Canada. Ill email him again I think. From memory the heads I have were about 1200 canadian. Flow charts are fine, in every case I have seen tested here - promised numbers and actuals were about 10cfm down. This includes my heads, clyde berg heads, and heads up heads - although the heads up were very close...

Yes the CB heads fell short too but were still very good, despite being an
"out of the box" head.
Hi Daimo,
It depends on you combo, but the ones we had struggled to fit .550 lift with no shims!
The accepted minimum is .060 form bind, but if you can set them at .100" the springs will like you for it.
The bare min shim will be a .015" to protect the spring eating the aluminium.
If you run into bind you will have to make some room by cutting the seat or facing the valve,
or changing the retainer. Most retainers can be machined(with a radius in the corner!!) to account for a .015" shim.

GB309E is my all time Fav with 1.4 or 1.5 rockers.
With good cyl heads it will not run out of steam.
dangerous ·
Talking CFM, and 1/4 mile times, and HP, is very hit and miss when you are ordering heads.
To separate the salesmen from the experts,
tell the company what you car weight is, and what SPEED it has run on the 1/4.
Then tell him what speed you want to run.
If the engine is making the power it will run the MPH.
The ET can be worked on by optimising your combo.
BiX ·
Dangerous do you have any experince with the tighe cams, grind 148A? it has a duration of 253 @0.050" and lift of 0.509 with 1:4 to 1 rockers?
dangerous ·
Not a real fan of that profile with ratio rockers.
See what I posted on the other section.
