https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/56198/clutch-forks-broken-what-the-hell-do-i-do-now

Anthiron ·

ok so replaced my broken clutch cable today but when engaging clutch all i got was a whirring noise and the engine would die if i left it depressed.

dropped engine.

both of the arms that hold the throwout bearing have snapped.

the arms are there but the little hooks have snapped.

where do i go from here?

i need this car to get to work tomorrow so looks like ill be finding a bus or something i hope there is one.

Weld or replace..................bummer.

Anthiron ·

is this a precision measurement?

as in could i get a peice of steel and cut it into the right shape and then weld it on without worrying about perfection?

how does one replace it? and where can i buy a new assembly from?

11CAB ·

Mick Motors will have new ones.
There is a small grub screw next to the clutch lever that has to come out, take the arm off, then slide the fork to the left until it comes out of the bush on the right, then lower it down and feed it out to the right.....fitting the new one is just the reverse.
Good luck

Anthiron ·

ok

ill order one tomorrow.

wish i discovered this this morning and i could have had the new part tomorrow instead of monday😢

thanks graham.

Craig Torrens ·

Do you have another gearbox, just pinch it off that!

helterskelter400 ·

here's one i prepared earlier. haha

Anthiron ·

dont tease me🥲

dangerous ·

Looks like you have a bunch of spares in your signature, rob one off that "mid 60's baja bug in pieces"

Anthiron ·

all of those cars are at my fathers place about 100ks away.

other wise i would have done that yeah.

that car also has no clutch fork in it if i remmeber correctly(no engine in it). the only car that has one that would fit would be the yellow late 50's baja but it has an engine in it and i dont really expect my father to drop the engine for me as he wouldnt know how and prolly doesnt have the time unfortunatly 🙁

ANTHIRON.......you are the only guy I've ever heard of that is rebuilding their daily driver, from the inside out whilst still driving it and doing critical components first with the worst possible timing🤪. I'm sure sooner rather than later you will stop having these break downs:cussing.Everything will be new !!! Good luck fixing this one....your building up your knoweledge and experience hands on !!! Hang in there !!:beer:beer

Anthiron ·

ok arranged new clutch fork with karmen.

just looked at the old one.

i dont see a grub screw

there is a small circlip on the cable arm and another small circlip on the inside passenger side of the bellhousing.

is this what holds the fork in?

mackaymanx ·

yes. there is also a bolt on the back of the bellhousing that holds the bush in the bellhousing but I don't think you will have to remove that.

Anthiron ·

damn they are small......i dont have pliers that small.

dangerous ·

You will have to remove the bush.
It comes out with the arm, so the bolt on the bell housing has to come out too.

Anthiron ·

will the bushing just come out easily when the bolt is removed? or will i need to bash it out or something?

Doug Sweetman ·

had this happen to my first bug..... bang rattle rattle.... oh shit, where did my clutch go ?

Pain in the proverbial.

Provided the bolt is removed it should come out with the arm.
Only light tapping will be needed.

karmen ·

does depend on corrosion...oil it up a lot 1 hr prior.

karmen ·

2 sharp screw drivers can do the circlps also done it with tempered coathanger wire.

Anthiron ·

ok got the part. (thanks karmen)

will attempt to do something about it tomorrow morning.

Anthiron ·

new fork is in.

hopefully ive done everything right as the arm was very tight on the new fork dont think ill be getting it off in a hurry.

old one came out a hell of a lot easier than i was imagining.

just need to recruit someone to give me a hand to put the engine and cage back on and fingers crossed the thing works now.

Midlife crisis ·

Don't forget to undo the clutch cable wingnut before you put the engine back in and when the engine is in and all bolted up adjust the clutch cable then. I forgot to do this when I put a new clutch in and had to undo the engine bolts and move engine back a bit so I could unwind the wingnut.

Marc

Anthiron ·

yeah i had the cable sitting loose wheni put the engine back in but thats a good tip i hadnt thought of that!

car is going again.

clutch however feels very light now though.

i dont like the way it engages. it used to be quite solid with a quick and solid engagement point.

now its a much lighter pedal and doesnt engage so quickly.

too much bend in tube?

cable too loose?

cable too tight?

Check the free play at the gear box arm (tic tic when it touches the bearing to clucth inside).
If it has free play and gets gears OK, then you may have to look further.
You may have nothing wrong at all.
