a freind of mine told me that the 1700s are lemons as engines ,,,is that true or is he full of it ? thanx guys

Bizarre ·

Compared to what??

Personally I think the 1800 is the pick of the bunch - but a 1700 T4 Vs a 1300 in an early beetle??

Gimme the 1700 any day

Joel ·

ive heard that a fair bit too
but i cant see any major differnces between 1700 and 1800 that would make the two behave differnt
ive only had an 1800 apart but a 1700 just has diff heads, cam and 1mm smaller jugs??
someone will know more

No he is wrong they are good, the case is apparently the best of all type 4 motors and the rockers can take 911 swivel feet adjusters, which are a must when it comes too high performance. The heads are also good too and are used mainly for turboing, something about the ports, although the 914 2litre head is the best of the factory heads. cheers Damo.

I wouldn't think they are a 'lemon' There is not a lot of difference to an 1800. Probably the best assumption would be that they are about 6% less powerful and maybe 6% more fuel efficient.

If it is a Type 4 based 1700...most definetly NOT a lemon❗.If it is a type 1 based 1700 with the thin cylinders it is definetly a lemon👎. The Type 4 1700 has a different case to the 1800/2000cc engines.

What is the main difference in the case?

Depends on the application of the motor...mine has no fuel pump provision as the car was standard with an electric fuel pump. The hole and mounting for the pump doesn't exist.
