old post:
Hey i'm Dan. Just realised i didn't have a thread in here 😉
Mine is a 64 Beetle. Pretty much stock apart from a 1500, and whitewalls. Oh, and the ragtop that's in it now.
edit - and the new paint!
it's a Britax one from the 70's apparently. I would've loved a weld-in one, but that's more effort and $$ that i cbf with - let alone tackle myself. And this is just a bolt in - nice and easy...well, 6 hrs easy.
cutting a hole is hard.
and pics of it installed.
and a few pics i took today.
and yes, i know - it needs to be slammed, let alone painted!
not a bad weekends' work - especially whenh it's coming up to summer

looks good mate, dont worry about the paint 😉 just slam that baby 😀😀😀 :bounce
HerbieBoy82 ·
Looks great. What colour do plan to paint it? Did a good job on the sunroof. Are they hard to find?
Brendan.
oval TOFU ·
I drive past it today... maaaaaaaaaaan, you gotta go the slaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamm!
helbus ·
Slaaaam slaaaaam - slamslamslam.
BUGBOY ·
Good to see you followed my directions for fitting the roof.
Forgot to give you your free sunscreen with the clip! LOL:thumb
rupewrecht ·
This is the plan:
LOL @ sunscreen. The jigsaw idea was a very good one. i had to hack a bit more from a couple of spots at the front with an angle grinder, but apart from that was all good. Cheers again 🙂
And yeah, i know it needs to be lower. Just have do decide how to do it (adj beam/drop spindles/both) and have the money!
ruckus ·
Looks sweet mate. Thanks for the install pics.
bajachris88 ·
where do u get these rag top kits from? can u still get em brand new? who supplies em? how much $?
especially a bolt in kit...
[ Edited on 11/9/2006 by bajachris88 ]
rupewrecht ·
i got it from BUGBOY - it's a 70's Britax one - who don't exist anymore apparently. But that's the reason i got it - it was bolt-in 🙂
oval TOFU ·
love the mockup - esp the white highlight on the door.. DO IT. All you need is an adj beam, or just a beam that has had it's torsoni bar mounts turned the right amount for a ... hmmmm 3.5 inch drop by the looks of your bug.. then you just take the rear torsion bars out of the back and install them again a couple splines down! Viola! slamm city!
rupewrecht ·
Ok, who's the poor sucker that's going to help me do it while i watch? 😉
Seriously, soon though. When i stop spending money on my other car. *rollseyes*
malcolm ·
the roof looks great and your colour sceam with those scollops on the side will look #1:thumb
Hertz ·
I'll supervise.
rupewrecht ·
a few new pics. thought i'd better paint it as i'm taking it interstate this weekend and wanted a little less attraction from the locals up there. new parcel shelf is visible in one of them.
actually looks a lot better now it's almost one color lol
oval TOFU ·
certainly looks less ratty.. I saw you turn into Orban Rd - i was at the servo in my invisible Civic, otherwise, you probably would've seen me if I had the bug... looking good man..
PrettyBlueBug ·
Will be wicked when it's painted the red and black! :P
rupewrecht ·
new pic:
trip to canberra and back, stopping along the way
Then my t-bar bumpers arrived, so had to wash all the bugs off the car...you've no idea how weird it felt to wash primer LOL
And finally have made a numberplate bracket so that it's not held on with a bumper bracket stuffed throught the horn grille and held on with green tie wire hehe
helbus ·
Saw you today. Had to give a 'punch-buggy' to the wife, she was too slow.
one4 ·
The sun roof looks hot.
Love one for my beetle.
Also that colour plan look sweet can't wait to see the final job. 🙂
Richard
65busser ·
Looks great as is, but love the plan.

Nice lowering job. I really need to get around to doing that.
And i must've missed the Helbus! But i keep seeing bay windows everywhere.
helbus ·
We were in the KOC beetle 🙂
kroozzn63 ·
yeah stick to that plan ,its perfect
CAFFINEPUSHERMAN ·
saw it in the flesh today looking good nice to meet you:thumb
ren ·
Hey Dan, forget the paint, just dump it and be done! Looks great in grey primer, and the ragtop is sweet.
rupewrecht ·
i'm actually thinking of raising it even higher now :p
Voodoo ·
what kind of mirrors are those? I've never seen 'em...dont tell me theyre another cool Aussie Only item we in the States cant get
rupewrecht ·
they're actually for a motorbike!
Wanted a pair of something in that sort of style, and ended up getting them off ebay
Hertz ·
Hey Voodoo, what are you doin posting over here in these parts mate.
rupewrecht ·
Would Big Bird bleed yellow if i ran into him?
pyr0 ·
sweet now for the rub down aye 😉

Need a hand?
Still wanna line up against yo Mazda....
[ Edited on 23-10-2006 by empi ]
ruckus ·
Damn Dan I thought we were working ok on Tanaka-san, but you're crazy man!
I love it!
What colour for the base-coat, or is that not more primer? :P
[ Edited on 24-10-06 by ruckus ]
empi ·
like the title suggests "many shades of primer".
rupewrecht ·
yeah, thats a coat of primer filler. just to fill up the little imperfections i've missed.
The body's still not perfect...but it'll be good enough. Might hit it with a coat of grey just for something to sand off and still have the yellow on there.
I must admit i'm gaining a certain satisfaction from doing it all myself! At least i tell myself this before the muscles start to hurt from rubbing it back. lol. Cheers for the offer tho empi.
beerdoc ·
Nice work Dan
It looks cal with the windows masked (no quarters ):thumb
Thanks again for fixing Courts Carbie:beer
ren ·
EMPI, I think you'll need to shop around for a bigger turbo first!😀
Nice work Dan.

Once i've painted the bug, then i'll start work on the astina again (as that's in a similar state of disrepair!). It only does low 14's anyway so you'd probably beat it!
[ Edited on 24-10-2006 by rupewrecht ]
rupewrecht ·
it's baby poo yellow. bleargh!
rupewrecht ·
but now with red sides...
Last pic is probably the most accurate regarding the actual color...but it's still darker than that.
A bit peely, but needs some clear and the metal flake on it anyway.
Käfer ·
it looks great mate, now just dump it.
ren ·
slow down Dan! You'll be all done soon, and have nothing left to do!😉
rupewrecht ·
once it's painted, then it'll be time to lower it 😉
or start work on the Astina again.
or paint a mates VL apparently!
oval TOFU ·
looking good dandan. Are you going to be painting or decaling the scallop?
Why do you take all your photos at 'work'? ❓ The people there must think you have, like, 3 different coloured rats!
rupewrecht ·
not sure on the scallop...but i think i might sticker it if in case i get sick of it.
And those pics are all actually taken at home! But yeah, i'm sure the people that live where i park must give it weird looks.
ren ·
yeah go the sticker option, it would be a bitch to mask up the scallop accurately.🥲
neonuke ·
wow, looking good. I love the mockup and can't wait to see the result.
by the way, how did you do the mockup? was it in photoshop or flash or something like that?
rupewrecht ·
i did what i could of the mockup via www.busselecta.com, then photoshopped a few bits.
oh, and I acquired an adjustable beam today 😀
Hertz ·
I can mask your scallops. Go for painted ones, better to be authentic. You can always rub it back and spray it again. When are you going to buff it up?
rupewrecht ·
well, i'm planning to get a better surface on the red on sunday/monday/or tuesday, in preparation for the clear and red metal flake. depends if i do that or the beam
Hertz ·
Must be Beam Sunday tommorrow, Im thinkin of cuttin one up tommorrrow as well.
rupewrecht ·
didn't get as much done as i wanted to. as usual!
the red needs a few more coats of clear, and i only got a couple of guards done in the black before the wind picked up and tore down my dropsheets.
didn't even touch the beam. but i want to find a how to on doing that before i tackle it.
ren ·
KUSTOMCOACHWERKS.COM for beam info/discussion/video how to's etc...
rupewrecht ·
cheers ren! :beer
ren ·
saw the 'many shades' hammering down the eastern today with pusherman. some black there too I see! how's it going?
rupewrecht ·
ah yeah, was on my way to lunch with some mates.
and it needs more bleck! Hopefully will get the body done this weekend. then i can do the guards/engine lid/bonnet the weekend before DoVW
Think i'll run out of time to put the beam in before then unfortunately.
rupewrecht ·
more progress.
just need to give another coat of bleck to all the guards and the engine lid, and i'm done for now.
oh, and more metal flake and clear on the red.
Voodoo ·
wow man,I'm really excited to see it all get done!
neonuke ·
same here, can't wait to see it finished.
did it take long to mask the window rubbers? how did you do it? seems like you're doing a great job masking the windows.
rupewrecht ·
Yeah, the masking takes aaages. i just use a cheap masking tape around the windows, and that seals them well enough. then just newspaper over the windows.
And because it's a daily driver, reassembled to drive to work, until i pull it all apart this weekend...again...
a few more things to do, but clear indicators and red taillights are on.
just needs another coat of black on all the bolt-on panels (apart from doors)
and more clear and flake on the red, and the wheels.
and still need to finish that rear guard which is about halfway done.
then lowering ahoy!
Voodoo ·
Hertz wrote:Hey Voodoo, what are you doin posting over here in these parts mate.
what can I say?,..Aussies got it goin' on! :thumb 😀
PS,.. its lookin' good Dan!

Pure laziness! Well, more or less.
I've got another rear guard to go on, but i'e just been unmotivated to finish stripping it...so it's got left behind.
i'm going to try and do it this weekend. thats the plan anyway!
decked dubby ·
Hey dude, is the flake red, or silver with red candy over the top?
Lookin good.:thumb
rupewrecht ·
It's Ford Hermitage red base, with 'Fire Red' flake over the top. Just something kinda subtle.
Btw, the streaks are just dust caught in the unbuffed clearcoat. They'll be fixed soon enough. 🙂
PHAT BUG ·
Man that looks awesome!
I'd go with painting the scallop, its not that difficult, plus like Josh said you can always rub it back and start again.
heres one I did.........

shes really coming along good work dan
PrettyBlueBug ·
Looks the goods! Semi-rat with the guard left as it is.... :P

rupewrecht ·
Still need a beam!:P
and then you can get busy helping :P
BUGBOY ·
You can still do all your king and link pins while you wait. LOL
Voodoo ·
I'm still new at the whole photoshop thing, so it looks kinda bad, but may help ya get excited,..that cars really come around!
rupewrecht ·
At least you did some damned camber on the rear!
peope keep photoshopping it with no camber on the rear. and it's very annoying lol
oh, and i have my 3.5" narrowed beam now
ruckus ·
Who did your beam Dan? Towers?
rupewrecht ·
BUGBOY, and yep!
body just needs a little massaging to make it fit.
Voodoo ·

rupewrecht ·

Joel ·
u bent the fuel tank to fit a narrowed beam?
rupewrecht ·
desperate times call for desperate measures! all checked for leaks and stuff anyway. will probably get a new one and just raise it.

Superior 500 13 1/2 inch wood wheel. needs a bit of a cleanup, but the price made it worthwhile. all the way from the US.
otherwise not much else has changed, apart from a thin coat of oil from JNR356's car from the chicken chokers cruise :P
