clutches and flywheels...differences? which clutch to buy?

Anthiron ·

ok so looks like i might buy a new clutch kit.

i have a 6 volt flywheel on my engine. with a stock sachs clutch and disc. this is 180mm right? pressure plate looks like this......

however i also have another engine with a 6 volt flywheel (same amount of teeth) but it has a different PCD for the clutch bolts.

i have a later looking clutch which fits onto that flywheel. (the kind that looks like this.....

now im worried im going to order the wrong clutch if i just ask for a 6 volt clutch.

how do i know what ive got without taking my clutch to the shop with me?

Joel ·

need a bit more info
do u just need a new clutch plate or is ur pressure plate stuffed as well?

i havent done much work with 6v beetles but as best i can remember they all had coil spring pressure plates not diaphram type like u pictured
even my 74 1300 has the original coil spring clutch on the 180mm flywheel
but when dealing with presure plates the one thing to be warey of is the guided throw out bearing style
pre 71 i think have no guide and the pressure plates have that raised contact on the springs like the top pic where as 71 onwards doesnt (bottom pic)

turns out my clutch is ok after some messing around and adjustment.
