I know this sort of question gets asked quite a lot but this is just a little different.
I will be keeping my stock rims which should be 5 1/2 inch x 15. Now my question is: Will 195x50's fit safely? I am sure that they will clear if I only lower one or two notches front and rear. I am kust worried about the width on that size rim. I have been told that 185's ballooned out quite a bit.
Thanks for any help

A 195 x 50 x 15" is quite a wide tyre for a fairly skinny rim but they will sit on there OK.
Might look a little odd tho.
Why go so wide with narrow rims?

Type 3s don't have 5.5s they have 4.5s (I think - may be 4s)

I thought 4.5. Correct tyre is 165x80x15. Maybe late t3's had bigger rims? What year? 165's would stand a better chance of clearing. (I'm going through the same process...no expert but this is what I've learned to date.)
And I believe 2 at the front and 1 at the rear is the way to go??

Nah dude, you need two wheels at each end

Yeah it may only be done 2 notches in front and one at the back. I like it to sit faily even so was guestimating the same for each end.
Oh and Holy flying duckfish. 4 1/2 rims, now that is narrow. Perhaps I have tried looking at too much info and become confused. I think it was the SAMBA site that I was giving a real good going over.
I have 165's on there at the moment but want something wider. If that is the case (Will have to check each wheel) then I suppose I will have to go to Porsch rims. I wanted 195's as they seem easy to get and yes I was a little worried that they would look funky on 5 1/2 rims, if they end up being 4 1/2 then they will just look stupid I think.
LOL so much for an easy answer

Early Type 3s wide 5 pattern had 4 inch wide wheels
When they changed over to 4 stud they went to 4.5 inch about 68 or 69

Just get rims made - 15x6 will fit with the correct offset. You need 110mm backspace, I think. Not sure what that is in 'proper' terms, but about 37P I think. Try the for sale section - Menangler (I think) had some Tp3 wheels for sale a while ago and gave info on offsets/backspaces

If you dumped it 2 notches at the front and put 6" wheels on it....would it still go round corners?

like a lot of dreamers i am trying to do all this on the pov. Having wheels made would be at least $200 per rim x 5 (Im anal and like the spare to match) then the cost of new tires as well. I have allready conned the panel beater at work to repair the rust, so he may also be able to roll the guards a bit (Doesn't solve rubbing on the inner though. On that thought: Does the tire rub on sheet metal or some integral part of the front end. (Just wondering if a tap "cough* with a sledgehapper would fix the problem. lol just kidding.

I run 195x65's on my 5 1/2 inch rims with no problems.. and i think it looks fine!
However the rims are beetle offset which is wrong for type 3's, so i get a bit of rubbing on the wheel arches, but only when going over bumps with the wheels turned (i.e driveways)
Oh, and i chose the bigger diameter tyres to keep my highway speed..

will be waaay less than $200... but yes, I hear you on the $

I will have to try and check the price then. When I was having the steelies widened for my Statesman nearly fifteen years ago it cost me about 150 per rim. Lol what have you blokes done to me. I used to love my V8's, now all I dream about is VW's

keep your eyes peeled, i got a free set of 14x5.5s for my wagon for nix (trade for the stds set i had on the car), running 175x75 up front and 195x60 in the rear, had to clearance the lips of the guards a little though (bend them up and in a bit) to stop any rubbing. handling has been fantastic with this setup.
