Alternator conversion: what\'s needed

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/56765/alternator-conversion-whats-needed

ruckus ·

I've got a stock 55amp alternator on the way so what stuff can I keep from the t1 generator setup and what needs to be changed?

EVANGELLION ·

generator stand needs to be changed to alternator stand , also depending on the alternator u will heve to remove the regulator .

barls ·

ive got an alternator stand and other misc parts left over from my conversion if you need one just let me know ok

oval TOFU ·

might need a new fuel pump too - for alternator-to-fuel -pump clearance..

Hertz ·

get a billet oil filler, much easier than swapping over your old one.

ruckus ·

Thanks guys. Barls you have a u2u

ctefeh ·

Ruckus,
I put a post up about my whole schmozzle changing from gen to alt.

Called "Alternator Conversion on Klaus" in Tech Mods.

Is the 55Amp an internally regulated one? This will make a difference if it isn't. An easy way to tell is the externally regulated ones have a three prong plug on top. Most shops don't sell these Alts.

Joel ·

the three pronged alternators are just the factory ext regulated kind fitted from late 73 to early 75 and wernt sold as an aftermarket item
alll the kits u buy are the aftermarket int reg'd type
if u get a 3 pronged one its just one someone has pulled of a 74 bug

Thanks guys. Here's a pic of the alt:

Looks like I have to take the regulator off? Do I just make up a plate to cover it up? Also it's a 50, not a 55 is that going to be much of a problem?

Thanks heaps Ctefeh. Forgot about how good that thread was! Bit daunting though.

koolkarmakombi ·

thats a genuine original.

Needs an external regulator

ctefeh ·

Ruckus,
I'll send you an email with two piccies of the regulator you need later tonight.
Don't hack wires until you get one.
Funnily enough I'm helping a guy out right now with the same alt, so I'll pass on the details of what we will have done to hook it up correctly.

Legend. Thanks.

Joel ·

if u havent got a vw reg for it just got to the wreckers and an old holden with a two pronged bosch regulator will do the job

Ruckus,
The fella got given a two prong solid state Bosch regulator. Given Joel says it's all you need, what I did was re-use the brown and green from the gennie harness.

Terminal D- on alt to old brown, anchored at the old earth point where the regulator was.

Terminal D+ got a red wire we pulled over the top of the
original harness to the D+ terminal on the reg. This got a piggy back terminal at the regulator for the blue idiot light feed.

Terminal DF on the alt got a green wire to hook up to the original harness and got connected to DF on the reg.

DF and D+ are marked on the alt and new reg.
Someone before me has run an extra wire from the starter/battery hookup to the fat red lead of the main harness, so all I did was connect the B+ genny lead to the alt and butt connected to the battery+ feed wire that usually goes to the genny regulator.

Fingers crossed! Haven't started the donk yet as I am rebuilding his loom because it got chopped up extremely badly.

I'll post up when I see that the alt/reg combo is doing it's job.

The fella was told a new VW one would cost $200+ and have to come from the US:repuke

Joel ·

ruckus ·

So where the hell do I find a Bosch two-prong solid state regulator (if that's what I need with my alt)?

Joel ·

most of the old H series holdens that run alternators have them and probably early commodores too
not a ford man so wouldnt know about them sure but i'd think they;re the same
so any wreckers should be able to sell u one

surely someone on the forum has one fitted that can show what they look like

-Joel

ctefeh ·

Ruckus,
I'll take a piccie when I'm over there on wednesday night. Any good Auto elec place flogging Bosch gear should have 'em.

Joel ·

heres what an original VW one looks like
this is the rather ruggered original 74 one from my Lbug
the new one i got is similar but has a plastic base
this one has an extra terminal but i havent found out what it does

Ruckus,
This is upside down Miss Pat. Green on Gen to green on regulator (DF), that black/white wire joins to a red (not long enough) and goes to D+. Also, the blue idiot feed is crimped into the black/white spade.

Brown wire comes from Alt D- terminal and joins the former brown gennie earth. Not really necessary but you never know.

Didn't manage to fire it last night, replacing the two engine bay seals took a long time and some claret shed to boot.
