So its finally on the road, my 36hp steroid motor is ALIVE !!! The motor was built by in 2002 but I have not been able to drive the car until now. I'm amazed at how well a modified 36hp motor drives....... a lot more grunt than standard :thumb
Here it is:
Euro_67 ·
Vintage HP.......cool.
Craig Torrens ·
I had the original exhaust ceramic coated as well as fitting a modified mini sump !!:P
Anthiron ·
so whats done to the engine craig?
ive read that hotted up 36ers dont last too long.
Craig Torrens ·
I tried to have it modified to what would have been done in the 50's
Heads= Bigger ports with larger valves, standard rockers
Compression= Raised !
Crank= Eight dowelled and fully balanced
Conrods=Standard, Balanced
Cam= Tighe Cam 37/68 grind , bolted with modified lifters/pushrods
Oil pump= 30mm H/duty and anti surge sump.
Carbs=Twin 28pci with custom linkages.
Electrics=009 dizzy (Does NOT have a flat spot !)
Exhaust=Modified and ceramic coated
All new bearings, rings, gaskets/seals and new clutch.
As for lasting...............well as long as I keep the revs below 5000rpm it should be fine !
Anthiron ·
what sort of BHP do u think that gives you?
Craig Torrens ·
The big fuel suckers !!!!!
Craig Torrens ·
Anthiron wrote:what sort of BHP do u think that gives you?
Probably 38hp !!!!!!!!!!!:P
It feels more potent than my 1968 single port 1500, so probably around 45-50hp.

lol... how many $ per hp was that one?!
Craig Torrens ·
About...................lets not go there😊

It's cool that you've done it though... so you didnt get the crank balanced at the same time then - only reving to 5k?
Craig Paton ·
👍 Kool...!
You'll ave a busy '07 by the look of your signature!😁
Craig Torrens ·
The crank is balanced just not counterweighted. The quality of the steel in 36hp cranks is not as good as the later, so they tend to crack quicker if you give them heaps.:cry
squizy ·
Craigie!!!!!
I reckon I might get 40hp then eh mate?
vw54 ·
hows the gearbox Craig
Craig Torrens ·
You did a great job with the gearbox Dave, feels smooth as 🙂
vw54 ·
you had better drive it over so we can have a look
dangerous ·
I love 36ers...very cool!
Now, what about some info on your signature? (1916 drag motor?)
VWCOOL ·
if it holds 5000rpm in 4th gear it wil be will be a 100MPH old-school '54!
Craig Torrens ·

You aren't going from circuit to drag are you? Better watch out for "Bump Steer" :P
Craig Torrens ·
I've heard its bad on a drag strip !
vw54 ·
ask JVL LOL

nice manifolds, must have been a pretty cool guy you got them off.

Here's a look...............semi ratty!
boristherat ·
That is just beautiful!!! And with just a little more hp too, niiiiice!
mountainbug ·
very nice...you got a great collection
Craig Torrens ·
slowly getting there!
BeetleJuice ·

Time to slam this baby Craig. Throw on some 145's you may have lying around.
Craig Torrens ·
I'm going to do that to my 58...................or maybe a new 54 !
whatnow ·
hi craig, what condition was the case of the engine that those heads etc came from, in?
just wondering how 36hp cases handle high rpm.
also any idea if it was a late (58 on?) or early (pre 57?) case?
thanks.
henry.
vw54 ·
just wondering how 36hp cases handle high rpm.
It probally only revs to 5000 max
I hada similar set up years ago great Torque from the Twin carbies better than the Judson supercharger

That engine went to 7000rpm all day, the case was OK but the counterweighted crank was cracked to buggery.
No idea of year.
oval TOFU ·
what carbies did you use Davo?
VWFREAK ·
You can't put a price on hp, love your work.
whatnow ·
thanks craig. the car looks great.
humpty ·
Thats sweetas Mister Torrens... Im diggin' that 'fivefour', but I do think it should go a little lower... Slam the 58 fursur, but dump the 'fivefour' Panamerica style... Goes hand in hand with vintage performance set-ups IMHO.... Make a nice little mover for vintage/classic rally events.... Do you guys have any 'round the house's' events over there?
62deluxe ·
Nice mate! I love a bit of "old-speed".
Craig Torrens ·
Cheers everyone
Just need to finish painting a few parts in the engine bay, and then I need to run it in !
squizy ·
Guys Craig took me for a blast in this today. It pulls very well indeed - nice bit of induction too. The amount of torque over my standard 36hp is quite noticable.
Bugger the scrounge for big bucks and high hp - going old school and squeezing that extra single digit hp out is the go!
Craig Torrens ·
Wait till its run in Squizy, then we can really go for a blast!

Don't forget although this one wasn't quite big bucks, it was still several kilo spendoolies...
whatnow ·
what happened to running the VJ4BR8 distributer? too painful getting it recurved?
Craig Torrens ·
009 was better.
hellbugged ·
wasn't you i saw heading south along the Pacific up this way today Craig?
Craig Torrens ·
Not me, I was in Sydney today.
hellbugged ·
ahhhhhhh, clone then.
Turbo54 ·
Love it! You need to slam it and stick a set of these on it!

Nice work
Can I ask what colour the car is, it looks pretty similar to my 55 and I'm not 100% sure which colour mine is....was thinking Reed Green, but dunno.
Thanks
Craig Torrens ·
same as yours, but I don't know the name of the colour :jesus
whatnow ·
looking at in2vw's site it would have to be Clayton Green, no idea if this was the australian name for Reed Green?
some people have asked for the ID size of the manifolds.............30mm.👍
pod ·
i`m making some manifolds with 28 id for my 1300, sort of copying them for size off some single port kadron manifolds i have without the 40 to 28 taper, fingers crossed❓
Craig Torrens ·
👍
pod ·
Craig, does your carb setup run a balance tube between or isnt it necessary??
pod ·
Craig can you post some pics of the middle linkage setup, is it from a type 3?? thanks
Craig Torrens ·
pod wrote:Craig, does your carb setup run a balance tube between or isnt it necessary??
Yep runs a balance tube.
Craig Torrens ·
pod wrote:Craig can you post some pics of the middle linkage setup, is it from a type 3?? thanks
Yep its a modified middle section from a type 3 and the cross bar is from a twin Kadron setup. Its not ideal, but it was enough to get the car driveable.
I will get some pics during the week :thumb
vw54 ·
yeah its beter if you run a balance tube
much easier to tune and runs smoothier
