LMS engineering beetle (sorry can't recall the drivers name) - ? Waldron
Dave Butler
It was a pity to see Rod Penrose blow a hole through the top of the case, also the gearbox of Wayne Penrose's oval gave up after some promising passes - although Wayne won Air-cooled class by racing his dual cab tow vehicle to beat CT Hansen in his beautiful track prepared oval in the final (after CT drove all the way up from sydney - great effort!) - obviously wayne's track experience helped him with some super consistent passes. Like myself who made it to the last 4 of aircooled class (Wayne took the win in our race) - my best 10.56 - super slow but super fun!
The VVDS beetle possibly had bent exhaust valves (someone can confirm/dispel this) - head was off in attempt to fix but no luck unfortunately. Dave Butler blew a CV but with the help of Aaron (awesome 13B triple rotor powered kombi) and others, he was able to get it back on the track for sunday racing and top 8 finish. I know Aaron also had some problems in the kombi but seemed to get it back out on the track. Fabian's "Aussie Inch Pincher" looked fantastic and will be great with some more track time. The Volksmod (from Burleigh Heads) manx was pulling some burnouts to rival the best of them! Wow there were so many highlights I can't even start to condense them down (maybe after a bit more sleep I'll try and write up some more detailed info) - still buzzing from all the fun!
Although I was one of the slowest cars with my stock type IV 2L (that damn stock cam and damn stock heads were a bit frustrating), I absolutely loved the event and had a ball on my first attempt at drag racing. All the racers were super friendly and helpful and spent the time to give some advice to newbies like me - big congrats to Craig for a successful first event. I would say it will be bigger and better next year!

Best weekend ever!
Great weather,
great track,
lots of runs,
nice people(VW people and Warwick people!),
The weekend was a triumph for all the people involved.

It was a pity some of the "big guns" didn't make it to racing on Sunday (especially for those that could only get there on the Sunday 🙁 ). Otherwise it was a great day out and awesome to hear vw dubs go flat out. Its given me a bit of inspiration to get mine finished and on the road. With a 1600 it should give the datto square a run for its money!!!
Although my girlfriend now wants a wheelstanding kombi...

Well done Craig on a great weekend. I've already got my calendar marked for next year.
The weather was interesting, hot Saturday, cold and windy Saturday night and bloody hot Sunday but atleast no sign of rain.
It was great to see the event so well supported by spectators and racers. Some racers came a longway.
Anyway here's some pics. (Message to my self.....don't give camera to kids to take pics next year...:o)

Andrew(Stanley) was my very helpful crew chief for the weekend. Thanks Dude!
We nearly wore out the car with all the runs, and tried to do some smokey skids.
Here are the runs:
SATURDAY
8.29@90.36mph(bogged start)
7.53@92.98
7.47@92.97
8.74@88.06(bogged start and missed 2nd gear)
7.88@90.18(slight bog or spin?)
Last run of the day : BANG! Broke a CV. (Thanks Aaron and Josh for your help!)
SUNDAY
8.26@87.72(bogged the start with CV fear)
7.57@91.42
7.96@90.18(slight bog)
7.431@93.16(breakout on 7.5 dial in)
7.39@93.55(breakout on a buy run & BEST RUN)
7.54@92.59(with a .490 reaction on a 7.50 dial in...got beat by the CHAMP Rod Richardson!)
Warwick is 550m(1640ft) above sea level.
Still trying to find comparisons for WSID and Willowbank.
I think WSID is 70m, and Willowbank is 350m...still lookin'.

Yep indeed - best was a 9.7 @ 70mph (approx) - Brad should have some more details. No oil pressure issues but heaps of wheel spin problems even with 26psi rear pressure. Car is still running really rich so there should some improvement still!
We had a shed-load of runs so it was good practice. :thumb

The road to victory.
7.897@86.37 vs 7.947@85.71 (Adam Debasi)
8.129@74.74 vs 7.829@91.65 (Morgan Smith)
7.901@79.5 vs 8.063@87.72 (Pete Page "The Boss")
7.930@87.2 vs 7.547@92.59 (Dave Butler) 8.016@87.54 vs 6.605@109.49 ( Mike Kristin)
7.892@84.91vs7.777@90.54 (Morgan Smith)
My fastest qualifier was 7.74@87.2 on Sunday morning. Dial in of 7.85. These figures obviously dont tell the whole tale (eg reaction times , other racers disasters, red lights )
I'll post a seperate thankyou later.

Thankx guys for a great weekend.
Great to see some VW's racing for a change on a dragstrip.
You were all great to watch, doesn't matter what speed/times/etc you did, as long as you were on the strip & having fun.
Was a pleasure to watch you all.
The highlight for most girls I spoke to was Aaron's 20B Kombi....many couldn't believe it could wheelstand & haul ass like that....great to see a kombi even on the track let along doing what he did.
To many of you who helped others out with parts/a hand/ support/ a pat on the back to you all.
great to see friendly rivalry & supporting one another.
Our passion to see everyone have a great weekend & do well is awesome.
Thankx for a top weekend guys...you were great to watch.
Def going next year to support you all.
You were all worth getting sunburnt to cheer you all on
Thankx again

yep was a great weekend, we have marked our diary for next year.
Spoke to Rod Penrose he said that he thinks it was the gudgen clip for the .new pistons he put in may have broken as he found half a clip on the track.
He was told by the suppiler of the pistons he must use these clips even though he hates that type of clip.
I bet he is knocking on there door today.

IT WAS F%#*ING AWESOME!!!
Many thanks to Craig for his effort over the weekend,
it has been 18 years since I last raced and I was giggling all weekend except for when I was being hunted down the raceway by a menacing black kombi in my rearview mirror. The bus forced my fastest time of the weekend. We had the slowest car of the day but also the cheapest. We went for a good time and came home with a runner up trophy. I also fully expected to blow up the datto motor in the squareback, will have to try harder next year. Many thanks to my crew " Team China", Cameron,Pete & Bajaboy + my cheer squad. Don't hesitate to enter any old car in the backyard you just have to be consistant. Thanks to all for not laughing at me directly we'll see you again next year:thumb

after having a look at Rods engine in the pit area after the blow-up , I don't think that a gudgeon clip caused the carillo rod to break in half and destroy everything in its path as it hurteled around inside the engine .
If he found half a gudgeon clip , I suspect that it was ejected after the broken conrod attacked the piston .
I was very disappointed to see this happen so early in the day , as he did not get to run the car .
HotRodMatt ·
Yep top weekend.
Thanks Craig and thanks racers and other supporters!
Was great to see Cranky complete 10 passes (including the fastest pass of the meet) over the weekend with nothing more than 2 fuel injection pill size changes and repacking the chute and filling up with fuel between passes.
Wayne, I think you are gonna need an ANDRA tech real soon... congrats, definitely a 10 second combination there.
More when I get some sleep.

Yeah we had a GREAT weekend
Craig thanks for putting it on annd thanks to the Warwick Drag Racers What a good bunch of people and a terrific race track
Pity NSW dosent have a facility like that
The Vintage car had 3 runs then we had an engine failure with a circlip coming loose allowing the piston pin to score the # 1 cylinder bore resulting in no compression After pulling the engine down and locating some Barrels and pistons in Bisbane 94Bs ( thanks Bruce ) we also discovered we had burnt the exhaust valve seats and bent the exhaust valves so the racing was over for the weekend
The car went straight and Safe which for a new car was a satisifying result for its first run down the track sat on the wheely bar each run and didnt lift pity we didnt get to try the parachute thats next time
Like Beck said if it was on again next month we would be there great people and top weather Thanks

Thanks Craig for putting on such a fun event. The drags, street parade, corporate tent, camping, promotional advertising etc. It was a top effort.
I'm really impressed by the committment of the VW drag racers who surely are the backbone of the Australian VW scene. Most of the cars are beautifully turned out and the level of modifications, most being different, is incredible.
I love the tough cal-look cars of Dave Becker, Adam Debasi, Rod Richardson and most of all Fabian's Aussie Inch-Pincher.
I'm blown away by the amount of work that's gone into Cranky, the LMS car, the Vintage Veedub car, the Penboss car and the Penrose cars. Don't these guys sleep?
My little oval, CT 056, impressed me the most. It's had it's fair share of touble over the past couple of years at supersprints but not last weekend. It did 16 passes down the Warwick strip and drove all the way to and from Sydney. It's fastest time for the 1/8th was 9.7 which is, strangely, the same as the fuel economy in litres per 100kms.
The only drama involved Kenny the Koala. Late on Sunday night somewhere between Glenn Innes and Tammworth the ute in front of me did a slight swerve and then I saw a cute, but big Koala walk in front of my car which was doing about 110 kmph. They say you shouldn't swerve for wild life but I did and missed him. Thankfully the car remained composed no doubt thanks to the sticky tyres and circuit racing suspension set up.
The highlight for the weekend was the grudge races I had with Stuart Morris and his Iron Cross ragtop.
An awesome weekend!!!

Hi Rose,
The video looks great. Thanks.
You did a much better job than the people I've lent the camera to in the past. Normally I see their feet and then the sky with little else in between.
There are about 40 passes on the video which includes most of the cars in the field. I'm putting them on DVD this afternoon. I'll send you a copy and one to Craig at VWMA so he can use it as required.
I think Cranky might have done terminal damage to the microphone!

Adam,
You guys didn't waste any time getting home to SA, what a drive!!.
I unpacked all the junk from the ute today, camping gear, tools, spares, took way too much stuff. pushed the car into the back of the shed after a wash. It will sit there for a while, Have to save up for a new gearbox after smashing 1st gear on my last run. I have reached the limit of stock axles and 1st & 2nd gears, still, what a weekend its just great to have just Vee Dubs and Vee Dub dudes together racing and having a ball.
This is the stock axel I broke on Saturday. can't complain, this box has over 50 passes on it, and this is the first time it has broken
hellbugged ·
yeah went o.k.
no traction in first gear at all, and none over 5500rpm, in second or third.the weird thing was that i could absolutely launch back up the return road, well into third before the left kink, with no traction problems at all????????
it was very frustrating watching that bloody kombi come past as i was wheel spinning at 3/4 track🙄 (Aaron is the nicest bloke you could ever come accross tho)
anyways-ran consistent 8.7 seconds on Saturday 2.2sec 60ft, 81mph-and felt 7's were coming
first thing Sunday fell to 10 seconds.
after they treated the track, mid Sunday, straight back to 9's.before efforts to get the tyres hot saw the end of the clutch
...... so next year i will be back with some mickey T's and the biggest kennedy pressure plate i can find🤓

without a doubt the most enjoyable and well organised event that I have ever attended in the past 20 years on our Australian VW calender .
For those who missed it , a piece of advise......DON'T DO IT AGAIN !! you must come next year , join with us and have a great time !!
To Craig , very well done mate for organising such a great weekend . With the standards-bar set so high now , organisers of all VW events are going to be under extreme pressure to satisfy the tastes of our VW enthusiests . THIS ONE IS GOING TO BE HARD TO BEAT!!
If this was the only VW event that was scheduled each year , then that would be enough for me .
To the people and track officials of Warrick , a very big thankyou for your hospitality . I have never met a nicer bunch of officials , not only were they there to run the event for us but were there to share in our accomplishments and enjoy the weekend with us .
To all the VW racers and race teams , thanks for making such a great effort to travel to Warrick to make this event the best that there is . For taking the time to set up camp and make the pit area look like a true proffessional event with banners , flags , marques and racewear .
To everyone in the crowd that came to support this event and cheer on the racers , a huge thankyou !! The kombis parked along the top of the mounds with their annexes out looked great . With out you there , we wouldn't have tried so hard to impress and the event would not have been so exciting .
WELL DONE TO ALL INVOLVED !!:beer:beer
Bug_racer ·
Well this starts once again with a few hours sleep in 2 days and a real long trip to Queensland . I finished working on the S3 at around 10pm and its a 9 hour drive  . Racing started at 11am . So I filled up in Sydney and made it all the way to Glen Innes on just over 3/4 of a tank of fuel . Thats 561 km with almost 400 hp with just 50 l . Anyway made it to Warwick around 9 am , pretty much enough time to have a shower , get changed and straight to the track  . Once we arrived I checked out the competition in our class . Didnt seem like the trophy was threatened so I thought Id let Michelle do the driving chores . I think she got around 15 passes on the first day .
Once the racing finished we went back to the motel , I crashed much to the disapointment of Michelle . Second day of racing , checked all the levels and adjusted the tyre pressures . She managed in total 28 passes with a best time of 9.1 @ 83 mph with a 60 ft time of 1.9 . She did well but needs to launch the car better . According to my quick testing car is capable of 8.3's @88 mph with a 1.7 60ft time . I'll be taking the car out to WSID soon in an attempt to crack an 11 .
The way back was , memorable you could say . 100km into the trip the power steering hose return had rubbed on the driveshaft . I couldnt work out why until I checked the tyre pressures . Michelle was driving on a flat :banghead: , there was just enough clearance when the car was stationary but going over bumps it would rub through eventually leaking . Pumped the tyre up and there was heaps of clearance . Spent 3 hours trying to patch it up but nothing worked , so it was a long drive home without power steering swapping the batteries over ever 1-2 hours . Took us 12 hours to get home . Oh and the kangaroos , geez they think they are invincible . I had one try and jump into the s3 as I was driving . Its safest to drive in the middle of the road cause they seem to hang out on the edges of the road .
Anyway was a great weekend , I enjoyed myself and will go again next year (if Michelle lets me :P )
Apart from CT and Wayne anyone else drive up and race ?
I suggest next year we have a class for all tow cars , I would have loved to have run the 200T as well

twin cab- 11.306@60.24mph (win on a 11.3 dial-in)
twin cab- 11.720@48.12mph (win on a 11.3 dial-in on the brakes)
twin cab- 11.282@60.56mph (semi-final win on a 11.3 dial-in with the smallest of both breakouts)
twin cab- 11.531@48.43mph (finals win on a 11.3 dial-in on the brakes)
TOO MUCH FUN !! LETS DO IT AGAIN TOMORROW...
after winning the air-cooled bracket , my best mate Dean and myself packed up camp , loaded the twin cab , connected the enclosed trailer , packed away 'mango' with all of the show display and put it inside trailer , and headed off on the 950k journey back to Wollongong .
Went to the weighbridge first thing tuesday morning before unpacking and found that our tough little 4 cylinder air-cooled type-4 engine was hauling 3840kg . Yep you read that right ! 3.84ton , NOW HOW TOUGH IS THAT !!

This year 3 next year 4 cause the 200t will tow the Golf . Michelle did 28 runs on the weekend , there were times when the staging lanes were empty so why shouldnt we throw some more cars in the mix . And 3 cars is plenty considering there was 1 watercooled , 5? buggies and 3 Vw's alternatively powered . Im not saying run them all day , just do a Chicago shootout when they are doing calculations for the other events

I used to travel quite a bit throughout the '90s but in the end my job prevented it(both dollars and time)
Even with a modern toe vehicle, the trip from here to Sydney and back is a 1000 dollar exercise,
before we even unload the car.
Whether that is your own dollars or those of a sponsor,
it is still a lot of money that is gone forever...never to be spent on go fst parts.
It really makes a difference though, when the event and friendship of people , are as good as the Warwick event.
Thanks to every one who came out to the track and made this event the best ever!

Sounds like a good weekend! might make the trip next time.Did notice my car was also used for the warwick weekender for advertising:o. For that high fuel cost its worth going gas Wayne. When travelling to Sydney town from Coffs and back $170 bill. It does pay in the long run to run a gas setup.I also have a F100 with gas top cond.Short wheelbase for Sale if anyone interested, very cheap to run.TOP TOW CAR u2u me JVL.

Mike racing Wally.
What most people don't know, is that mike was doing a great job also tuning the Dave Stoker/Mike waldron turbo bug(6.26@116!),
And that Mike K was nursing a broken ankle from the previous week.
Thanks for putting up with the pain Mike, and putting on a show for us!
That's me on my best pass of the weekend. A 7.39@93.55mph.

Thanks for posting the pictures Dave.
Out of curiosity i see in the states a few rail cars powered by volksie engines. Is anyone planning on do so here. I would love to see that sort of action.

No one that I know of.
There have been a few in the past here in Australia, but none at the moment that are on my grape vine.
Peter Keegan, Earl Kryger, and Ross Bulloch(Hurk the Turk) all ran rails with VW engines.

GREAT Pictures Andrew , Dave. Good to see that the week-end was a big success ( Rod still smilling ).Our cars came back from Warwick with out any broken parts. My quickest pass was 7.67 and ran two passes at 7.68 and start line rpm was 6000,best sixty foot 1.58 .Most were 1.64 with little bogs or bounce on start line. I decided to shift gears at 6500rpm to keep running smooth and trying to settle car quickly.Best mph was 89mph over the week-end ( no carb changes ) Normally shift at 7200rpm. Quickest pass ever in old yellow car was 7.19 at 95 mph in year 2000 on the eighth-mile. Have great dvd footage from both days at warwick ,will try to put sum up ,on a video site!!!!

Still trying to find comparisons for WSID and Willowbank.
I think WSID is 70m, and Willowbank is 350m...still lookin'.
I did a little more research to find out a bit more about the elevation of the tracks above sea level.
Willowbank is about 150ft,(about 46m)
WSID is about 230ft,(70m)
and Warwick is about 1560ft!!(475m)
This, and the heat, explains why I had about .2sec slower ETs.
How did everyone elses times compare to the tracks at lower elevations?
