What year are my plates?

Anybody able to tell me around about what year my Kombi's number plates were issued in? 🙂

They are RPJ-997, and read NSW - THE FIRST STATE across the bottom.

I wanna know whether to swap them for my personalised CoF ones from the VN Commodore (which is now under new management thank christ! 😂), or leave em on and put the CoF ones on summin else.

If I swap em over then the old ones will be going with the Commodore.

I'd hate to take em off if they are the original plates.. 🙁

C - early 60's
D - 1964
E - 1967 - then things went a bit wierd and rereleases occured
F - truck only
G - 1974
H - 1975
I - not used??
J - 1976
K - 1978
L - 1981

O - 1987
P - 1988
Q - 1990
R - 1991
S - 1995
T - 1997
U - 1999
V - 2000
W - 2001
X - 2002

If I recall the plates were originally on dad's old HX Premier stationwagon and by some coincidence they just happened to be the initials of my first middle and last names. 😂

So hence they were kept around for my use 18 years later. 👍

cool, anyone know the same sort of info for victorian plates? i would love to get something close to the originals for my bus.

there are a few different i know of
A was reused in 68/69 and B in 70/71
G was 72/73 a mates 180B got GWR in 73
H was 74-75
my 8/74 1300 got HBT 616 and my 11/74 celica got HKH 931 on 5/3/75
and one other 1300 74 i know got HEX 295

P and R were run at the same time for some reason in 89-92
and same with Q and S in 92-95
dads mazda got QII 272 in 94 when we bought it and same with mums 94 suzuki its got QIH 931

my Sbug got VVH 256 on 2/5/99 when i rereg'd it and my 74 LBug got QDN 246 when it was changed from ACT on 17/1/93
wouldnt have a clue on other states
but my Lbug got act rego YFX 810 when it was bought new on 17/1/75

so all that may help figure it out to
i have no idea why i know all this
taking notice of all the car plates and manufacture dates when i worked in the garage i guess

Here are a few from personal experience, for Vic:
Letters, ignoring the 3 digits. APPROX. dates only! (from memory)

RC - 1949-ish
WT - 1951-ish

NSW started 3 letter series at A, but Vic started at G... Went G, H, J, K, L, I
GAN - 1953?
GMW - Mar. 1956
GPU - Sept. 1956
HTA - mid 1963
KRN - Sept. 1970
KZX - Oct. 1970
IPG - Oct. 1976

Then went to A, B, C, D, E, F.
EUM - 1992

Then went to N, O, P and so on.
It could be interesting to see a comprehensive list, but I doubt there would be one?

I agree with Barry, my 1972 yellow bug was GIP150 when I bought it, my 1972/3 1300 Twin port was GLG and a friend bought a new Kombi in 1976 and it was JAF and my 2002 Prado is XSN.

First of all - we are ONLY talking black on yellow first issue plates here.

A would be correct if 1971.
Things went screwy from 68-72ish with re-releases.

'76 honda got HIZ
'84 VK got NDN plates
my kombi was issued with PZE in '91
my lancer got QEZ in 1993
magna got SUQ in '94
lancer got VOT in '97
falcon got wierd AD-76-VZ last year.

everything else has had non og or oddball plates like bicentennial etc.
