Flat spot

I know FLAT SPOTS have been gone over a thousand times, but I can't find anything relating to my particular problem.

I'm running a 1200 with a 30 pict-1 carb and an 009 dizzy. I've set the plug gaps, points gap and static timed it.

After doing this, I had a major flat spot trying to accelerate away from a stop. I thought it was the carby but couldn't find any fault with it. Playing with the whole set up, I just advanced the timing while the car was running until the flat spot dissappeared, which it did with massive advanced spark.

This leads me to believe that the problem is not in the carby (the accelerator pump would cause a flat spot all the time if it was playing up, regardless of timing) and there should be no other reason for it.

I'm really worried about excess heat from such advanced timing but I hear that the 009 dizzy requires advance of 30* when all in.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
Ross.

General wisdom is only time a 009 statically to get a motor started/going. If you want to time one for tune up purposes you need a timing light. Check out Rob & Dave's discussion and step by step proceedure.

With a 009 distributor the correct setting is 28-32 degrees total advance at 3000+rpm. That usually comes to about 7.5 degrees BTDC at idle -- but not always. Since the 009 distributors vary in build quality and the total advance is more important than the idle setting -- the idle setting could be anywhere from about 5 to 10 degrees BTDC after setting the total advance. Once you know what THAT idle setting is for THAT 009, you can set it static in future if you wish.

If you can identify the TDC mark on the pulley, 30 degrees is 46.5mm to the right of that around the rim [End quote]

Thanks Matt. I think I'll get a timing light and then just do some test drives to be sure of no overheating.

also check that the fuel squirter tube is aimed at the point where the butterfly cracks open and not the center of the butterfly bar
