hi,
how can i find out when my kombi was built and original colour and trim

cheers

Check the little plate on the drivers side front seat bracket. THats where mine was for my 75 kombi. All the codes are on then and then maybe look up www.ratwell.com or www.thesamba.com. they should be able to help you out.

Mine's behind the drivers seat... my '75 has the build date (month/year) and a few other numbers relating to the paint etc.. most mechanical manuals have a little speil in the front too. There's also a plate in the back somewhere near the motor.

On the manufacturers plate (behind the drivers seat), and in the engine bay on VW's after 1964, the Chassis number is printed.

The first three numbers contain information about the bus as follows:

First Number: Type ( Type 1=Bug, Type 2=Bus, Type 3=Square/Notch/Fasty )
Second Number: Model ( Kombi, Microbus, Deluxe Microbus, Singlecab etc...)
Third Number: Year (final number of the year... 8 for 1968 or 1978, 3 for 1973 etc...)
Remaining Numbers: Sequential production number

Model names and numbers are as follows:
1 = Panelvan
2 = 8-9 Seat Microbus
3 = Kombi
4 = 8-9 Seat Deluxe Microbus
5 = 7 Seat Deluxe Microbus
6 = Pickup
7 = Ambulance
8 = 7 Seat Microbus

My camper for instance has the chassis number 2362080001

This indicates that it came off the production line as a Kombi (delivery van with factory fitted windows and optional seat) in 1976 before it was converted to a camper, and was the 2,080,001th Type 23 produced in that year 🙂

The paint code I believe is behind the passenger seat on most buses... if it still exists.

Joel ·

all beetles from early 60s had the colour code and name on stickers in the boot so i'm guessing kombis would be the same
if it hasnt been painted over

the 71 on stickers were like these and arent usually far from the compliance plate
u should find ur original paint colour under the dash or in the engine bay somewhere

vw from 1970 on were really creative with vynil colours, it was generally black or brown, u got the occasional off white or red but that was about it LOL

U used to be able to get VW birth certificates for ur car which gave u all info about ur car when bought new
but i dunno if thats still around

good luck
