I love my subaru motor.

pete wood ·

Nothing serious, nothing new, but I took the car out today and drove it hard through a few gears and a few corners. LOVE it, LOVE it!

Awesome smooth torque, huge power and a great sound. I can't talk it up enough. I know my car is not perfect and I'd change a million things about it and probably will eventually, but not the motor and certainly not back to a VW aircooler. The only upgrade I'd make is to a louder exhaust. :P

Love it. :kiss

Soon to be joining you on the water cooled side👍

That looks very much like my donor car from memory...only had it here a week, stripped every possible part off it and called the wreckers to take the shell away. My kombi is going to think it is a suby it will have so many of its bits...oh yeah...love the way the tach flicks around to 6000rpm🤪

or no insurance and repairs are too exy. Its very confidence building to hear your new engine running:bounce

VWCOOL ·

I love my aircooled engine. Lumpy at idle, it rewards an enthusiastic prod at idle with a rowdy 'blat-bebump-bedump' as each of its 1916 cubes gurgles its morning juice through dual 40mm chokes. As I gradually wake it up completely and its pulse gets quicker, I begin poking into its mid-range, the snare of its exhaust richocheting back from the sandstone through my just-down-a-little-bit passenger window as I wind it out further and further in each gear. With warm tyres, I'm 'up it for the rent', brake dancing and heel-toeing as I find motorbikes to play with in my favourite playground.

It's so much more rewarding than the brand-new, cloned, sterile, late-model stuff I drive the other days of the week...

I love a motor that...

has real fuel economy,
doesn't need it's carbs balances,
doesn't need it's rockers adjusted, hell it doesn't even have rockers,
doesn't have a dizzy or points,
has more than one camshaft,
tunes itself,
was designed after 1920,
runs properly on unleaded fuel,
kick the first time you turn it over, every time.

Doesn't need to anything done to it to produce 150hp standard. 😉

Love a subaru. 😏

Neil, most of your posts are senseless ramblings that I can't figure out, but that one I like 😀

I had a 1915cc twin 44IDF 044headed VW motor, and sure it's nicer than a 1600 and does sound kinda mean. If that's all you had to compare to you'd think it's the ducks nuts.

But I swapped it out for a 2.5L V6, and I can say from first hand experience there is absolutely no comparison what so ever. The only advantage the VW engine had was it was lighter.

But this is the conversion forum, so we won't talk about those people still stuck on air cooled engines. Although it is strange that they hang out in the conversion section so much :P

kroozzn63 ·

love the aircooled poem glenn "the right engine struggle could go for hours " i recon drive a car/bus with the motor that was in it then work it to your own delights and suffer its original character and enjoy it or buy another car .
P.S im not that single minded i did go for a spin in a beetle
with a suby in it great fun until the 2nd gear smashed and we crawled back in 3rd

I suggest you let sleeping dogs lie, coz I can't tell you how upset I was about ruining my 2 yo daughter's special weekend away coz I missed bogging up one miniscule hole. The thought of that whole scenario still literally brings tears to my eyes. You've succeeded in upsetting me a great deal. So walk away please Glen. You were off topic when you started making comments on this post. Stop now please. We can all abuse eachother but that's not what we're here for. Craig I'd appreciate it if you'd do the same. I ask you both to do so as mates.

Craig Torrens ·

yeah but Wes your 1916 had about 70hp less than mine, so maybe you should stop comparing all 1916's to yours 👍

I prefer my Cummins V8 :P

Baja Wes ·

Craig Torrens wrote:yeah but Wes your 1916 had about 70hp less than mine, so maybe you should stop comparing all 1916's to yours
Yours might have made 50% more power, but it probably cost 400% more.

In fact it no doubt makes less HP than my V6 and costs about 500% as much.

So it's obvious there will be no comparing of apples with apples here.

And besides, I have digital climate control 😀

Craig Torrens ·

Damn that climate control gets me every time :P

Maybe that's why I drive a new car :kiss and leave the toys for the weekend !

pete wood ·

Glen and craig, thank you for your U2Us apologies accepted.

But let's take minute to reflect, every time any one mentions the word "air-cooled" in connection with the word "subaru" it becomes a watercooled vs 1916 crap fight and someone ends up upset while others rain poo on each other. Then the mods come in and have to clean it up.

let suby people talk about subys.
let 1916 people talk about 1916s.

Don't start fights. Ok. That's why people stop loggin on. OK my rant is over now lets kiss and make up... and that means everyone.
:o

VWCOOL ·

lol... we don't start fights, we finish 'em! :P

THUDKNUCKLE ·

All engines have their pros and cons but after goin for a quick spin in the rotary nothing can compare to its high pitched screem as it easily hurtles past 80 mph in second gear with 3rd and 4th left. in my oppinion nothing can beat the screem of a rotary with a lil work done on it, not to mention the smoothness.

just thought i would add my 2 cents seen as people were talking about subi's, v6's and the old aircooled.

Ps i know the first response will be ppl saying lack of toque which is correct when comparing early model roataries to piston power ( specially twin dizzy models) but take a look at specs on the net first and you will find that the figures of a stock standard 13 b will have twice as much torque then a an aircooled 1600 tp.

on the other hand i hear good stuff about subi power but down side they are starting to become common as bum holes ( every one has one). lol jks

Take care all,, as long as its a vw its got character 🙂

Baja Wes ·

THUDKNUCKLE wrote:in my oppinion nothing can beat the screem of a rotary with a lil work done on it, not to mention the smoothness.
I'll have to take you for a spin to show you smoothness and a piston engine that screams.

I was driving my friends 11sec R32 GTR Skyline today (which has an R34 engine in it). It is the fastest, craziest, most insane car I have ever been in. And I have been in a Ferrari 360, a Dodge Viper GTS and an 11sec 650HP Dogde Challenger. The sound, the ridiculous acceleration, the fact as I exited a round about I was spinning all four wheels under acceleration.

So really everything is relative. 😀

THUDKNUCKLE ·

yeah i agree modern piston engines can be smooth and be screemers but not screemers as in the same class as a rotary . i have also been in some very hot piston powered cars and have owned both rotaries and pistons such as very hot r32 gtr( sold it a week ago to a fella in nsw ) and have been in other fast road cars 34 gtr skylines, supra rz supercharged ford gt ect ect and so forth but mostly performance jap cars. but in my oppinion nothing has the feel or the sound of a hot rotary under full sting at high revs well past that of most piston engines. (not to mention the amount of hp obtainable from such a small
and compact engine) .After all there must be good reasons for mazda to go to the trouble of putting rotaries in their top sports cars.

but differant things for differant ppl i guess its all a matter of oppinion and what floats ya boat🙂 the almighty to someone might be anothers junk and vice versa lol

take care all 🙂

I finished my Suby conversion 51 weeks ago.
For many reasons it has taken me this long to get back on to this forum - one reason is there was some joker posting back then who I took offence to. Another reason is I just needed a break after 4 years of HEAVY internet work in order to carry out the conversion myself. I live in Ceduna so the only real help I got was electronic in form. Very good it was too.

Anyway, my first post in 51 weeks was to also say:
"I love my Subaru motor too"
I have given my bus absolute hell at times traversing local sand dunes and I have not been let down once. In fact, the bus now even surprises me at what it will do, especially as I am now gaining a fair bit of confidence in 4wding.
Pete et al are right. So smooth. So powerful. So much torque. So much much!
I drive a brand new Kluger for work and am allowed complete private use but still take the Syncro out as much as possible because of the smile it leaves on my face🙂🙂🙂

Cheers,
Andy

Subaru power in action...

I'm looking forward to doing another one of these events on saturday week (28/10/06).

Hi guys...

Thinkin' about it... an insurance written-off car at an auction could be bought cheaper than a fast dub motor...
What kinda model cars (affordable common ones liike subies with lotza guts) should a noob like me look at?

I am currently looking into finance on a working, runabout car... I got a few sources of dough to look at with parents backing me up and helpin... If i get a runabout car, then i won't need to rush the baja to get it on the road asap as my ride, i could take my time and make it a nasty machine like petes scoobybuggydoo

Hi Pete,
I had to chime in. The subaru conversion is the best thing
that I've ever done to my buggy!!! I drive it more now than I ever did before (and I use to drive it alot). Now I
don't spend half my time fixing oil leaks, adjusting valves, cleaning out carbs, and changing oil thats alway dirty.
I learned so much from the little vw motors and I will always love those engines but I have converted to the dark side forever! I just cant see spending the time and money to squeeze every last ounce of power out of an
overworked engine, not when you can have a engine thats in stock form and is capable of so much more and is reliable to boot

Pete, spoke to the chief today ... given that I don't have a motor in the 75 Microbus I just got, and decent T4s seem to be thin pickins - who wants to spend a grand or so fitting an anchor ... then defo gonna go with the EJ22 in it. As usual, he's got some 'ideas', as he's had a few Sube buses through in the last 12 months, which he thought could have been done better for a number of reasons...so guess the search is on ... gather the bits and off we go.

Can't wait ... not sure if to drop it or raise it at this point. One things for sure, sitting in the middle is too ordinary for me.

I've done over 200,000 ks in Subarus ... I really like the idea of going up hills and not having to do more than change the oil every year....rebuild a 2.0 T4?, why?

pete wood ·

you'll love it mate. helbus has never looked back, and as I said before, I'm happy to take the dead type 4 off your hands. 😁

BTW, where is Kimbo planning to put the radiator?

Gotta say, I nuked my factory fit Type 4 2 litre. Snapped a valve guide in No 1 - it did a rumble into No2. No 3 sunk a valve seat. Rough pricing for me to rebuild it properly was £1K (UKP). I had a spare set of 2 litre Type 4 heads too.
My conversion cost roughly £1.5k (UKP) for an EJ20 using a RJES bellhousing. A lot of blood, sweat and tears (before bedtime). The RJES bellhousing (www.rjes.com) isn't just a bolt on jobbie and needs chassis mods. Went for this though as it retains a bog standard Scooby flywheel, pressure plate, starter motor and realase bearing. It uses a standard 228mm Type 4 2 litre friction plate & standard 2 l release arm. There's a lot to be said about COTS stuff (Commercial Off The Shelf) as opposed to fettled/machined to fit.
Also used a Custom Off Road throttle body invertor for ease.

Worth every penny 😀 Cruises at 80mph and has returned 29mpg (that's UK gallons) on a 650 mile round trip, town work and motorway cruising.
