Rear oil seal

What size is the rear engine oil seal as I have to put a new one in. For Beetle motor.

68AutoBug ·

You mean the front engine oil seal behind the flywheel.
as the rear of the engine has no seal...

Sorry, I have no idea of the seal size...
as these are very inexpensive to buy from VW shops..
and I don't have a spare to measure...

Commonly known as a rear main seal or flywheel seal...

Make sure you get an elring brand seal. There were some black seals getting around that leak within a few weeks...

Yep get the red one from a VW dealer for your motor. Under $10 I think!
When fitting I use a smear of permatex on the outside diameter and a smear of engine oil around the lip. The oil is important.
Also change the flywheel o-ring as pictured above.
Good luck! Toby 👍

Yes thats great advice from Toby
replace the o ring too...
and all oil seals should be oiled, otherwise they are dry and the friction can wear them out prematurely...

The Elring genuine VW oil seals are red...
for high temperatures... and Yes they do get hot...
A genuine VW oil seal is probably cheaper than a standard black seal the same size...
