This car is driving me nuts

OK, finally got the replacement engine into my bug.

It doesn't seem to want to go.

It's getting fuel.. It's getting spark..

I've made sure the points are right by lining the mark on the pulley up and checking the dizzy, one thing that is odd there though, when that mark is lined up the rotor is nowhere near the mark on the dizzy, and when the points are opening the rotor doesn't seem to be under the post on the dizzy cap.. any ideas??

After the nightmare it has been converting this engine from semi auto to manual I'm just about ready to give up on the damn thing.

Anyone got a going twinport 1600 for sale??

sounds like its 180* out.....

Nope, tried swapping the leads in case of that...

dont give up.. someone will come along with an obvious suggestion and vrooooom away she'll go.. hang in there..

I know, it's just getting frustrating, bought this 1500 twin port of a guy out penrith way. since it was an auto i had to swap the flywheel from my old engine to the new one, that took a couple of weeks trying to find the right tools. Then I couldn't get the pulleys off either engine to swap the oil pumps, then the oil pump I had wouldn't fit the new engine so I had to buy another oil pump.. finally all that is done, and it won't start. Oh and the guy that I bought it from promised me the ait filter and the muffler that was with the engine.... Mate rang him yesterday and organised to go get it, turns up at the guys place to be told, oh it's not here, it's at my mums, she's not home....

Was meant to be dropping it off at my mates today but no sign, suspect he doesn't really have it at all 🙁

Argh.......

Sounds like your timing is way out.

Set the timing static (motor not running) at around 7.5deg, it's just gotta be close to the motor will start and then you can use a light.

fireing sequence?

Brent, I had a similar problem with my kombi motor recently after a rebuild.
Don't let this beat you!!
It turns out that the distributor drive gear had been put in about 60 degrees out by some moron. (No it wasn't me this time!)
What this meant was that although the pulley marks lined up to show you were at TDC the mark on the dizzy that the rotor should point to at No.1 TDC was not really top dead centre at all! Took me a while to figure it out but was so obvious when I finally realised what it was. Fixed it and she fired right up!
The rotor should point at no.1 lead on the dizzy cap when the pulley marks line up, and the valves on No.1 cylinder should be rocking - this indicates that the valves are closed, and that the piston is on it's compression stroke. If not rotate the pulley and move the distributor body till all this happens. Also confirm that your firing order is correct. If you have fuel and spark then there's not much else it could be I'd reckon.
Good luck!
Cheers, Toby :thumb

Thanks guys for all the help, had a chat with Ron on the phone and have a few things to try when I get home from work tonight.

I haven't actually owned a car for about 10 years now, pretty much ride motorcycles everywhere, but since the ex-wife decided she no longer wanted the beetle I now am a car owner again 🙂

Funnily enough one of the last cars I did own was a 1962 Beetle, I've always loved them 🙂

Kind of looking forward to getting her on the road 🙂

ave you set the tappets? or at least see if they are running in order of firing? the other thing if EVERYTHING is in order is tow start the car, sometimes you need a real fast turn over for the first time an engine runs, once its fired it will be ok for a long time! have fun!!

Yay! Finally got it running... sort of... and it leaks oil a lot, so I gotta pull it apart again...

Can't get it to idle though when it's warm, constantly just stalls, if I turn the idle screw up heaps it'll stay running but is at fairly high revs...
