pulled over fan belt was fine, fan was fine so i started it up to check connections, wiggled this and that to no avail. everything is hooked up correctly.
was about 100ks away from home at my fathers place so i drove it into cooroy RACQ and he tested it with a multi meter.
no charge coming off the genny apparently.
what tests should i do to rule out regulator or generator?
how much for a new reg?

Do a search here, there is a thread with a good URL link dealing with how to test the generator properly.
Volkswagenboy ·
Once you disassemble the generator test:
The feild coils for shorts to ground, and test for short circuits as well as resistance.
The armature for the same.
Brushes and comutator for wear.
If there's any abnormalities you may need to refer to a manual.
Also check for poling (Armature coming in contact with pole shoes).

s there any simple way i can rule out genny or regulator ebfore i start ripping things apart?
h ·
hey,
did you give the brushes on the genny a push down whilst the motor is going?
we did this one time drivin down to valla many years ago and reseated them and the genny came back to life..
must of been some crap or something, dont really know but it worked that time..
give that a go man??
you may need a screwdriver or alikes to push down firmly to test it out..
cheers n good luck..

yeah i did try that actually.
ive had that happen before. and i sanded the inside surfaces of the brush guides and seated them nicely and it worked perfectly. ill pull them out tomorrow and have a good look. and try again i hope its just something simple that ive somehow missed.
thanks for the suggestion H i had forgotten to mention id tried that.
thanks astro i saerched but couldnt find anything thats a big help

no worries good luck..:thumb

where it says generator frame in the first test does this just mean the gennys outer casing?
Anthiron ·
found the problem.
the DF terminal wire has come off on the inside of the genny.
how do i take off the rear peice of the 2 peice pulley so i can get in there and reattach it?
11CAB ·
Two big screwdrivers should lever it off, its just on a woodruf key
Anthiron ·
i tried to big screwdrivers.
tomorrow nite ill soak it in some WD after work and try it again in the morning
ive given up for today ha ha.
forgive my ignorance graham but whats a woodruff key?
11CAB ·
A woodruf key is a half moon shape piece that sits in a similar shaped groove cut into the shaft. Thats what stops the pulley spinning free on the shaft. The pulley cant turn around the shaft, but can slide off the end of the shaft.
Anthiron ·
oh right i get it. is it on a taperd flange? or should it just slide off freely when its lubed?
11CAB ·
No its not tapered
Anthiron ·
ok thanks for the info graham ill give it a good splash of WD40 tomorrow nite and see how i go!
11CAB ·
It might be worth checking out how much a new Alternator from Micks etc is....I think the prices have come down in recent years and it may be a worthwhile upgrade
Anthiron ·
got it off.
thanks for the info graham.
took a few goes to get it back on without the key popping out. ended up pushing on it gently with a screwdrvier while sliding the pulley on far enough and then it went on ok.
all fixed now sweet.
👍

Feels great to have fixed it doesn't it?
Sorry I couln't be of more assistance.
