donn ·

got a 12 v genie and thinking of replacing it with an alternator, any problems or things I will need to look out for.
have a 6 v horn and want to fit it to the 12 v system, will it handle it ok as I see it the thing is only used for a part of a second each time so maybe it will be ok, if not can I fit sumthn to cut the volts / amps down?
All or any help would be appreciated.

You could use a ceramic resistor to reduce the voltage from 12 to six volts, amperage will double though.

when changing the geny to alt, you will need a alt stand, check what kind of regulator (if any) the alt uses, and the carby might touch the alternator as well, just bend the throttle arn a little, make sure it dosnt jam!! it also an engine out job!! good luck.
why are u keen on the 6v horn? just get a 12v one, so easy so safe!

The motor doesn't need to come out.
You can either lift the shroud and get the whole shebang out somewhat painlessly,
or if you have hex head bolts in the lower two backing plate screw holes, you (with triple jointed pianists fingers and bulk alcohol) can even do it totally in situ.

You will have rip a few things off though either way.

Have a look in Tech mods at the "Alternator conversion on Klaus" thread.
