that is freaky!! 800cc? or 600cc?? i dosn't look like it gets too hot, but im suprised that it cools properly that blue paint will stop it breathing.
i don't think i'd like to be 1000feet up on half a vee dub motor, oh and don't forget that depending on your "scrounging ability" you might even get it done on the cheap!! why are you throwing that engine out again? oh a dropped valve? no worries i wont use that cylinder!!
ha, make me laff,

They also run light aircraft with the 1300 boxer from the Alfasud...very cool! 👍

HE STOLE MY IDEA!
cept i was thinking using all 4 cylinders... i tell my mates everytime i go to his acerage, the nutcase i am if i had the land and time i would build myself a plane... for the fun of it.
Samblers ·
you'd think if he was tyring to save weight he'd chop some of the crankcase apart - the cylinders dont weight much!

ultralight at 224 pounds, that would have decent pulling power with 60hp. hmmm could do some serious burnouts on the tarmac he he

Just think of the airflow with a cooling fan the size of that..... maybe the paint is to keep it warm........lol
bajachris88 ·
Yeah, the airflow it would cop would be insane.
I gotz myself a radio control single cylinder plane, nice yellow one with 1.4metre wingspan... after the thing flys around with full throttle, when it comes and lands (when the engine runs dry of fuel and i glide in), the engines cool to touch right away

Looks like a great idea to me. cheap and neat. they are using subarus in light aircraft now too.

Chris, sorry to tell you this, but Dr Porsche adapted the VW boxer from aero engines of his day, so it's not really a new idea.

I neva thought of it for inspiration, was thinking more for the challenge. I have neva been in a plane before... let along MAKE one

My twin seaterKR2s had a Revmaster 2180 with twin magetos and plugs. Would have looked cool with a couple of IDAs sticking out the cowl.

ha - i thought the same thing - one thing at a time chris...

That seems a bit pointless. Why bother? That engine would be lighter, but the problem is that small aeroplane engines are not cheap, so I suppose half a Beetle engine will do a good job. I'd certainly fit dual spark heads and a dual ignition system.
Ther Subaru AE81 engine is very popular for aeroplanes because it was designed to be an aircraft engine from the beginning. It was put into a car because it would not have sold in sufficient numbers if it was made as an aircraft engine. The EJ series is just following on.
