Old chrome question???

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/57984/old-chrome-question

jason1957 ·

Does anybody know if it is possible to fill in pit holes from rust and still re-chrome.
To explain this further I have a set of old rossi headlights that have been sitting outside for far to long, although not in to bad condition just a small amount of pitting in the surround which would be seen if I just re-chromed them.
Would some sort of lead wiping/filling or solder work???

I have been told that anything can be chromed...
so maybe filler??
or welding??

someone should be able to tell You....

My Son saw a bumper that had been re chromed....
and a piece of mud under the bumper was also chrome plated.....

first of all you need to have the rims chemically stripped back to bare metal which means taking off the chrome and nickel look up yr closest Electroplater in the phone book

Theres a place in Sydney that will plastic wrap almost any thing and then chrome it

Its a long process but ideal for badly corroded metal and expensive

You might be better of painting the rims after stripping them of the chrome

Thanks guys I would prefer the headlight rims chromed so I'll phone around and let you know how I go...
If this isn't possible I'll go with paint or just sell them and find a better pair.
Thanks again

The way they normally fill any imperfections is to
chemically strip back to bare metal
Light polish the metal
then copper plate allowing time in the tank to build up copper in the imperfections

this copper is then Polished and hopefully the imperfections have been filled if not the process is repeated

the problem with this is the copper build sometime distorts the item so you have to live with this

yeah, what vw54 said, filling can be part of the plating process.

I don't think it's worth the trouble with Rossi's. You can pick up them up on eBay from time to time. I bought a beautiful and perfect set (NIB) on eBay a few months back for $112.50 with two sealed beams! So keep an eye out on eBay and something will pop up!

Thanks guys I'll get some quotes but I think you are probably right about finding some on ebay.
Thanks again...
