Another rather silly Q

Hey all.

Noob a little lost :P

Am a little concerned about the motor in my Beetle. I am a little unsure at what motor it is exactly.

I have several books on hand, including the Haynes Workshop Manual and the T.Wilson "How to rebuild your VW A/C Engine" however after reading the relevant sections and digesting the various tables I am still none the wiser.

The car is a 76 Bug and the seller reckons it's a 1600. Were the 76's only 1500 or 1600?? I have scoured the various links on this forum to many sites, but can't seem to find any info online that may help. The engine number starts with an "AS" which I know Super Bugs from 73 carried as a original case, however one of my books states that the "AS" could also be a replacement case?!

Im not hugely mechanically minded but want to learn as much as possible about my motor so any info would be great.

Cheers.

its a 1600 twin port engine with a dual releif case

well thats what it would have been it could have been modifyed since then.

Were they all twin port around 75? How can I pick a twin as opposed to a single?

Bizarre ·

Where the carb comes down and splits in each direction if before it gets to each cylinder head there is a rubber ring and it then goes into a cast aluminium end piece it is a twin port

if it is just a steel piect that bends down it is a single port.

they wer all twin port from about 71

Bizarre ·

borrowed this frm Selling Parts (Ruckus??)

the front one is twin port

the others single

the 1976 model beetle had the flat windscreen and dash... with ball joint torsion bar front end..
and disc brakes.... IRS rear end like a super...

the Large curved 1303S had gone....

VW kept the best until last..... lol....

engine number should be between these numbers
: AS 269031 to AS 401299

chassis number : 116,2000,001 to 116,2200,000

made from 1st August 1975 - 31st July 1976
the last ones were sold in 1977 in Australia...

yep, yep and YEP.

6/76 to be precise with the IRS and discs as you described above. Purchased it for under $900 with 3 months rego and drove it home. The ONLY time I drove it :P

I only realised the other day that I havn't got a photo of it complete - I was so keen to start taking her apart that I did so the next day.

Can't wait to get her back with her new floor. :P
