Ruckus' thread got people a little steamed about the word Hood and Rat.
Here's your thread to blast it out.
ruckus ·
Thanks squiz... I think I'll stay out of this one. I'd rather be cruising with a smile on my dial or working towards making the dubs better ('better' in my terms).
Good luck to those who wage into this one.

well i'm quite passionate about the term and the fact that ameericanism is overunning not just australia but the world! as a totally independant country we shoud remain independant.
1 we do NOT have "hoods" in Oz
2 people who come from "hoods" do NOT drive old vw's
3 these rides are probably worth more than the whole "hood"
and lastly, we have BONNETS not HOODS
they should be rat rides, the words match the sentement of the cars, i honestly feel that over in australia they should be called BARN RIDES,
i think oz is the only place to describe a car as a BARN FIND!
let the yanks do what they want, but PLEASE PLEASE Dont follow them like some sort of a sheep! you'll become lambs to the slaughter!!
PS i drive a t3 / t25 syncro transporter NOT a vanagon!
i had a vw golf NOT a rabbit, and a vw trekker NOT a thing!! cheers jon
bond ·
hehe - independant country under the queen jon lol
i like some of the other names you have mentioned ie: barnride. im not partial to hoodride in all honesty. in stating this - i drive one of the lower beetles in qld and am often seen being lifted over driveways 🙂
as for the schpeil on "politics" etc. mentioned by others in the previous thread. i agree with the rebeliousness or whatever of it all to the point where it has become a running joke how often i am pulled by police. but am still all for it. just not for the coined term "hoodride"
at the end of the day - its all good - but id rather have an original ozzie term than coin someone elses
not out to diss anyone, their likes or dislikes. just my 2c

good one Jon ,but maybe it shouldnt be barn finds but maybe shed finds, and i totally agree about the americanisms of everything in Oz these days ,it really gives ya the sh*&s and yes i too drive a T3 Caravelle not a vanagon Paul
vwjon ·
mike your telling me that a vw is not an imported pest!! HAHA my neighbours would say ther are a bloody pest!! parked all over the street!
squizzy, it looks like a toss up between barn ride, or shed ride, i like that, ozzys love their sheds, and some of em are HUGE!! but how come i've never seen a car being sold as a shed find?

id just like to say you havent been to taree we have hoods up there. personally i dont care its an international term like cal look, we may not live in cal but its a look that started in an area not what it is.
bajaben ·
shouldn't it be a shedride then cause i haven't heard anyone call anything a barn and i once went to a party in cloncurry where they had a "shed" with about 600 bails of hay, no joke, big shed hahaha
i appreciate what the thread says BUT..... the term hood isa turn off for many people, i think its aload of nads about where "it" started, i think i started the rough but cherrished look back in the 70's in bridlington yorkshire. so are you all going to re-write the books nd call it the brid-look, or brid rides? when i was cruising in my rat ride i couldn't afford all the bling so me and a few other decided to go the opposite way, there were new catagories in shows called "rust n prime" which any vehicle that was rusty or primed for paint could enter. then as if by magic the stupid yanks stepped in with the term hood ride and like sheep you went along with it!
hood is a "bad" word, and as such should be dismissed, i DO NOT want to be associated with that kind of people, does that make me a snob? if so i'm a snob!! i am no hood boy, robber, mugger, rapist or what ever anyone else ties in with the word hood.i am not american and i do not want americanism in my life, its bad enough with all the crap on TV.
i am very sure i do not stand alone on this one.
if i do i'll sponsor my own trophie at WA's DOVW, and i'll win the shed/barn ride all on my own!
barls ·
so what your saying is even though a look originates in an area lets call it something else to be politically correct. personally people like this sicken me and the world is too full of do gooders like you. in my home town if a native austrailian of darker skin is arrested they are released before they even get to the station, where as a person of another colour is arrested it takes at least a day for the same thing no matter how good the lawyer.
personally i think you are all making a mountain out of a mole hill, like most of the cases about the names of things since the world became pc.
Wild1 ·
yeah, each to their own. it's fine if you don't like a term, but don't shove that down everyone else's throats, then you're worse than them
byronbus ·
Didnt australia have rabbit golfs?
vwjon ·
BARLS, WILD,,,,,,sometimes. just sometimes you have to stand up for what you believe.
if we are not carefull we will be taken over by the yanks or the muslims, they both have the same agenda, world rule by what ever means!!
remember a chap called adolf hitler? he tried the same, but some people stood up and said no!
i think we all live in a better world for those no-sayers
i say no to HOOD RIDE! lets stand up for our selves and keep us unique!!
GO TO THREAD "LETS VOTE" AND DO YOUR WORSE!
WHAT EVER YOU VOTE, I'LL GO ALONG WITH!!

all im saying is that just because it originates from an area doesnt make it bad. so are we going to rename german look because of ww2??
seriously think about it and if it really bothers you dont have anything to do with it.
there are a lot of bad words in the english language but we dont stop using them because of one bad example.
i agree with wild on this one dont start telling me how i can and cant use the english language it makes you seem like a total control freak.
kroozzn63 ·
the only reason i like the term is because the website was the only website that stimulated my mind and was related to vws .
for example there is an art section , music etc etc and all the other forsales tech etc etc also its full on self expression whether its a buick, kingswood ,sunnbird etc for me supporting the broadened mind gets my vote, and im not scared of what people think" hood "means or if it was an american site.
What if it was a german site would the "hitler thing come up?"
What about little red riding "HOOD" do you hate her to you big bad wolf lol,, fck im funny man chill its all fun and games

What are all those Cal Lookers and German Lookers out there going to be called? Thanks goodness the Australian Look (fibreglass, whale tail) is dying a slow death.
empi ·
I think the term Barn is a very American... and barn rides as a title sucks !! If your car was found in a barn i would understand... maybe .
Roll on Hoodride , its made a massive positive impact on the Vee Dub seen world wide in a very small peroid of time. Keep up the good work.

"Mock rusty crap lookers" sounds like a good title😘... "Barn" ride sounds very Yank👎. What about "She's cool mate"??? At least that is distinguished as being Aussie😂

my school is cooler than your skool.
who gives a toss what they are called.
it's your ride or my ride.
Like Volkswagen said themselves. "Just Drive."
A rodder friend said once when asked what "look" he was going for with his mid 30s Plymouth. He said, "Admiring looks as I drive the fucken wheels off it." I think we can all learn something from that.

Gravity challenged oxidised automobile look 😀

bingo this is exactly what i was getting at, apart from going off on a tangent about society
kombidaze ·
lets call it anarchy, cause your shovin it up the anal passages of all that modern society espouses too, slick crisp clean don't step out of line cause someonemight see you, of course such blatant individualism brings its own reward in the guise of police harrassment rta inspections little yellow stickers with a short time to comply and trouble at every pink slip or roadworth inspection, but such is the price one has to pay to be an individual in a society that breeds and rewards only mediocrity.

Barn ride sounds like something the Amish would raise and cart around town in.
Personally I would prefer Hell ride.
Any red blooded Aussie would be quicker to raise some hell than a barn anyday.
I always thought it was more about attitude and non conformity that set this scene apart.
If we are to be categorised then why not just label us as individuals and call it a day?:kiss

haha, i have a barn ride... and its a ute, so we can have hay rides as well if you want...

Seriously, who cares?
If you like it - use it,
If you don't, respect someone elses choice.
ColumBUS ·
with all the mock anarchy flowing in this thread i have the sudden urge to put on the Sex pistols, pierce my ears with safety pins and get really, really, really drunk...
honestly... who cares? just drive, that simple!
does my car have a look? yes, its an 'imtoopoortodoanythingtomycarandwhatthef$ckareyougonnadoaboutit' look... or is that no acceptable as it puts a stigma on ignorant bums?
honestly people... hoodride, it rolls off the tongue, don't like the term? dont say it. don't like the cars? don't look at them. simple. Just Drive. Fahrvergnugen

personally, the term "hoodride" makes me cringe. john jones was the guy who made it famous and he doesn't even live in a "hood". he's white and he's rich (coz hoodrides are big business now). But whatever, white anglos have been appropriating (stealing) black american culture since who knows when so why should we change now I spose. The yanks aren't the only people with barns. Poms and Europeans have them too, so "barnfind" isn't strictly american. Rats existed long before VWs discovered them. Matt can trace their heritage back to the rodding community. So theirs nothing new here, just one bunch of people copying another bunch of people.
The real issue here is that people are sheep. "Hoodrides" are just a new flock of sheep. 10 years ago it was resto custom, before that it was Cal-look, before that it was 80's custom, etc, etc...
So what's your counter culture check list for 2006.
got my Ipod, TICK
got my hotrod tats, TICK
got my designer ripped/worn denim, TICK
got my narrowed beam, scraping, rusty VW [insert model here] with 'hoodride' transfere. THEREFORE, I am trendy.
p.s. try something different, like a ratty car that actually handles and stops like a race car. 😉
