No AVIS, but got some Sway-Away type (EMPI Brand) deals....

sgetty ·

is this what your after sam?

Oi Deon...where did you get them from??..I need a set for a balljoint front end ...most sell the other style which i dont like ..

humpty ·

IMHO the 'Sway-Away' style ones are better (but potentially weaker) for fine adjustment, but the AVIS style ones (potentially stronger) are better for clearance on really low cars..... That said, there is another way around that issue with the 'Sway-Away' ones.... You need to flip the bottom adjuster upside down and fit an extra grub screw internally to locate the torsion leaves..... If you want more info on how to do that let me know..... I have used both types and feel the 'Sway-Away' ones are the best all-round option... But you need to be a very competent welder and acurate with your measurements.....

sgetty ·

hmmm carnt remember had them for about two years
i think i got them off ebay

i have these style on my bug now they are great enough adjustment for me

Oi thanks for the info Humpty ...see what you mean with the clearance issue with the sway a way type...have a set ..but not to keen on setting em up without a jig of sorts...sgetty hows the beetle coming along???

Yes,
I really like the idea of the AVIS type...
but I had the sway away type installed by a fitter and welder...
the same fitter who had used sway away adjusters on His own Beetles, actually just adjusted the standard VW dimple to where he guessed it would go...
No adjustments , so it had to be 100% right...
and His father said it worked out 100% correct...
as they had measured everything 10 times...

I don't know why the AVIS types are so hard to find...
Plenty of them for sale in the USA & UK....
and not expensive...

cheers

Its pretty ez to fit both types, but you need to be a competent welder.... With the 'Sway-Away' type you must set the adjuster at the optimum position for your needs and only do one tube at a time.... For a lowered only setting, I align the adjuster at the highest setting (grub screw furthest from the adjuster plate) and then fit it the torsion grub screw at the stock grub screw location... that way all adjustment is in the downward direction.....

And I suspect the reason its hard to get the 'AVIS' type here is because Ozzie importers like to stick with what they know and the 'Sway-Away' type are cheaper.... I remember a time when it was tuff to find the 'Sway-Away' type!

Humpty I've noticed some of the KCW beams have the inverted bottom adjuster. Could you please post some more info (if it stuffs sam's thread maybe in a new thread?).

Sorry for hijacking Sam.

the ball joint kits come like that. They have the little grub screw to replace the big one. The centre locator has two threaded holes in it. The indent in the leaves sits at 90deg to the adjuster you see from the front... avis ones the same...
You need to be careful when doing these ones and double check its in the right way.
They come with the instructions...
Moores in the US is the only supplier at the moment I think.

I would like to just say there is a huge difference between the empi adjusters and the Sway-a-way ones. In off road racing the Sway-a-way is the best way to go, as they are the most unlikely to fail. The copies fail all the time and the avis sometimes jump. The best way around the sway a way ones being mounted to low is to mount them 90deg out.

Seagull and I have been thinking about making a couple of our 100mm narrowed beams with the inverted lower adjuster.... If we do, I will post some images on how it is done.... But if you can't wait that long.... The BJ AVIS adjuster is along the same lines internally, but the 'Sway-Away' housing is inverted and mounted 90 degrees to the top of the tube...

Sorry Sam.... This is getting off track.....
