I recently bought Moose's convertible Baja, which had a very noisy, empty hot dog type muffler on a 4 into 1 Baja exhaust system on an L Bug 1600 TP engine. A couple of days ago I went the full length of the Polly Pipe in third gear and the tunnel revereberated with noise.
Yesterday I fitted a Lukey Performance muffler on short tubing. It is not loud, even at full throttle and it burbles along very nicely at a cruise, but it sounds just like a WRX with one of those big stainless steel jam tin mufflers on it.

Not a lot. It has a good engine and I'll keep it stock. I'm going to fit a Donaldson aircleaner on the back end and fix the driver's door which has a broken lower hinge.
I've had too many modified cars to ever want another one. Most of them were like the little girl with the curl. "When they were good, they were very very good, but when they were bad, they were horrid."
Most of what I do to it will be necessary rather than modifying it.

I've found that one of my Beetles sounds completely different at idle to the other, and not just because of the muffler. On one, cyls 2 and 4 have pipes that dump just in front of 1 and 3 ports and the 1/2 secondary is twice as long as 3/4, meeting just in front of the muffler, just like a Subie. Odd lengths give it a real 'beat' at idle.
The other car is 4>1 with same-length primaries. It's just loud...!

When my boxers sound like that the wife leaves the room😁

its funny how different styles of exhaust can make the same motor sound totally different
DUB74L has a 1 5/8 4into1 equal length with a 2" str8 thro turbo muffler and aprt from being hella noisy from outside sounds really throaty right thro the rev range but the weber on it has a bit to do with that too tho
but another of my bugs has a twin carb 1641 with a tiny little hotdog but non equal length headers and it sounds like a WRX idling but like a standard bug thro the gears
go figure.....
but i gotta admit as crappy as monzas are they still give off a mean note
