water coming in

dear all,

After a big downpour, i noticed my type 3 took a fair bit of water into the passenger side and the floor pan resembled a paddling pool - not good as I want to fit a new carpet! Ive tried to track down the source, and it seems to be from under the rear seat - there is a rubber grommet hiding a bolt (to what i do not know). There is a small cavity around this bolt full of water and mud. The cavity on the drivers side is full of mud but bone dry.

Im not entirely certain but after a few hours of driving in the rain I think it only takes on water when it goes through puddles.

Could anyone suggest a possible source of the leak? As I wont drive in the rain that often Im hoping to find the source and silicone it as a quick fix.

your best quick fix is to drill hole to get the water out!
Are you sure it is not a rear window leak? Or sides??
Are they near the battery floor under the seat?
Sounds like you mean the ones that hold the rear suspension sub-frame. Maybe a pic of the bolt hole to help.
It may also be worth checking the drain tubes and fresh air box up front under the dash. These are often rusty, and or the hoses blocked which allow water to exit through the firewall.. just a thought, as the water may be ending up at the rear from up front..

try removing the fresh air vents from under the dash as they may be blocked which will then overflow into the cabin area, also the drain as well from those vents, make sure they are clean and clear
