JTMIDGET\'s MEGA ENGINE!!

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/59170/jtmidgets-mega-engine

dangerous ·

Greg can fill in the details.
Looks like and awesome project!

xornge666x ·

do tell...
looks impressive!

66deluxe ·

Is that a B.R.E. case?

dangerous ·

This engine is a prototype flat four being built by JT,
and Greg Anderson from Pro Machining Ltd in New Zealand.

http://www.pro-machining.com/

It will be 2700cc using a 84mm stroke crank that has 5 main bearings,
and uses a roller camshaft with 60mm main journals.

Heads will be also a custom item from Joe Deppe in Indy,
and the guys will be able to use digitized progamming to CNC the inlet and exhaust ports
to attain flow levels of US pro stock cylinderheads.
Awesome stuff, and so close to home....can't wait to see those heads!!

If he doesnt want to use the case it would be awesome with a piece of glass as a coffee table! Work of art.

dragvw2180 ·

Seeing someone do something like this amazes me,how many hours did he spend prototyping this Dave? Mike

Here is a link to some more info on the engine,
although the heads are now a different plan I think.

impressive machining.

one question though, why start with a whole new block and crank when the new subaru EJ25 produces 300hp from the factory (I know it's turbo but even still)? Wouldn't 16 valve heads and a stroker crank in that motor produce the same horsepower at a much lower price?

Is there a 2v per cyl limit on the class or something?

Also, the Subaru already has 5 bearings in the block.

Just a thought...🙂

Not everything is about Subies, Pete.

Why do men climb mountains?

Because they can...(and also to impress chicks).

I have never seen a fast N/A Sube( although they should be on paper).

This class is generally a normally aspirated class, and has restrictions in capacity for boost, or 4 valves per cylinder.

Exactly...
Because we can...
and we have...

Essentially, we started this project because JT was telling me about the problems he was having with his current engine. The whole engine block configureation was at its limit. So we decided to go ahead and try something ourselves.

WE are working on the heads at present and will have some photos available shortly.

Dasdubber ·

Good to see you are able to log in and post mate - keep up the progress pics.

promach ·

Still having the odd problem getting logged on. Seems to have a lot to do with the time of day. Anyway....

Here are some progress photos of the Crank. Only needs oil holes, lightening holes through bigends and heat treating/grinding now.

We have managed to get the weight down to 25.5lbs / 11.59 kg.

The head casting shown, is our second option and has been supplied by Joe Deppe of Indy.
The head casting of our first option will be ready next week. Will have pics then.

yeah, that's what I thought.

Promach, no offence intended, just curious. Love your work. Looking forward to seeing how it all goes for you. :thumb

promach ·

For today's update, here's a shot of the barrels.

The plan is to have these done by the end of the weekend and start getting the heads bolted up next week.

There's going to be 6 studs on each cylinder. We want to make sure we keep it nicely sealed. ;D

promach ·

We've got the head back from casting. Nothing to show there just yet. Hope to have some machining done on this over the weekend.

This is one of those projects that is done in our "spare" time. We would really like to get this project done a whole lot sooner, so anyone out there has any thought on where we can get funding so that we can work on this full time. Any ideas would be gratefully recieved. We don't want this turning into a lifetime project and never getting finished or realising its full potential.

dangerous ·

promach wrote:We've got the head back from casting. Nothing to show there just yet.
You can't say that!!!

Show us the casting Greg!!?

Stanley ·

Hats off to you Promach...this is great seeing a project as it starts. Can't imagine to many doing what your doing.

If there weren't people out there willing to try something a little bit different or to try and do something better we'd all be driving model T's...(or 40hp Volksies)

promach ·

Show us the casting Greg!!? [/quote]

oK, oK here's a couple of photos. Like I said nothing much to show just yet. More to come...

[ Edited on 24-1-2007 by promach ] Photo's didn't show the first time. :cry

pete wood ·

dare I ask, but what sort of $$$ buys this engine?

also, it there any cooling to speak of, or is it strictly a drag thing.

promach ·

We don't have dollars worked out yet, but will let you know when we do.

There will be fins around the bores to help with cooling, have to look at the cooling around the intake/exhaust later. Running the motor on alcohol helps with removing a lot of heat.

The first motor will be going into JT's midget. This is purely a straight out race motor, not necessarily just for drag.

With the current bolt pattern in the head, 4.6 pistons are no problem, if I push them out we can have 5".

Dasdubber ·

Guys I'm trying to get JT's login sorted - he is having trouble signing on which I Think has something to do with conflict of email address (see sticky thread in general chat section from vanderaj).

I've contacted Andrew so hopefully we can resolve it soon so JT can post his input here.

Doug Sweetman ·

4.5" = 114.3mm, 5" = 127mm

Holy Crap Batman, thats going to be a large capacity engine......

I like it, I like it alot.....

Midget-JT ·

hi alan thanks for all your help its all good now .jt 👍

sorry but the pics are not showing up
but check on cal-look for a look at some off the cad files

Midget-JT ·

hey guys we need some 7075 T6 alloy plate sizes are 5x 6x5x1 .can anybody help .thanks jt

dangerous ·

No good with 'Shape Aluminium" JT ?

Is that in inches?
5 pieces of 5x6 x 1" thick?

dangerous wrote:No good with 'Shape Aluminium" JT ?

hi dave yes in inches .thanks jt

Midget-JT ·

hey Dave we have found some material ,alumec 89 a Swedish material with better properties than 7075 and its on our doorstep and cheaper to ,sounds all good to me . did you see we had a response from don pauter that was a good boost i can tell ya and he doesnt mind if we bounce ideas between us ,we wont be giving to many secrets away you never know what he will do with them 😂.the head will be on its way to rader racing in San Diego, California to have the ports finished of . the plan is to have john rader work them up were they can be used on the 4.6 - 5" bore .when we get them back we will get them digitized then finish the machining. the crankshaft just needs the oil holes put in and that can go for heat treatment and then ground and finished .thanks jt

dangerous ·

Hi JT and Greg,
Good to know you were able to source some material.

NOW. What are you making with it!!??

That is a great contact to have with Don Pauter.
Treat him well and he will give you the shoes off his feet.
You can both gain by the association.
People in the past have taken advantage of him,
so it is refreshing to see that he still has some "bounce".

Looking forward to seeing those heads Dude!!

VWCOOL ·

...just put a subie in it...

Seriously, awesome project fellers

Doug Sweetman ·

effing brilliant...... love this type of full custom work, as an engineer it really gets my juices going so to speak....

promach ·

A little more progress being made...

[ Edited on 8-2-2007 by promach ]

Midget-JT ·

hey dave your right about dp . the material will used for the main caps and will be with us about tuesday or wednesday of next week .thanks jt

Midget-JT ·

hey guys we did some more work on the barels over the weekend ,more pics to follow in the next few days:thumb jt

promach ·

We have been making slow progress, have the barrels up in the mill right now to finish cutting the cooling fins .Got the plate for the main caps on thursday also have to make a fixture for John Rader to bolt the head down to the flow bench for him to do his "thing" . Starting to look at using software to take the heads to their full potental instead of doing by "grinding and grinding" away .the software allows the user to make changes then reflow the heads, once done take the model and convert it into code for the mill .You have to thank god for the 21st century

dangerous ·

That sounds pretty good Greg.

Does that mean you can get John Rader to do just one of each port,
and then mirror them for the adjacent cylinder?

Is this particular head going to be for the 4" bore?

How's those crankshaft oil holes going?...joy!

promach ·

All we are having John do is one set of runners , then will have them digitized , make that into a 3d model run it in the software to see if it can be improved, mirror it, import it back into my cam software and thats all she wrote
Yes it will be used on the 4" bore but are making it so that it can be used on the 5" bore if so needed .Later will look at a overhead/twin cam head set up ,this opens up the area of beening able to make a crank with a "big" throw on it

YEAH!
Can we throw back Russel the telephone guy,
and swap him for Greg and JT?!!

promach ·

And destroy a perfect love hate relationship that we already have.

tayloredvw ·

wow this sort of stuff blows your mind, gotta love engineering. good luck felas, even if you are new zealanders.

Maybe we could have a trans tasman challenge some time?

promach ·

here's the bummer JT is english it could be said his great-great-granddad gave you the opportunity to be an "aussie". Yes I'm a kiwi out of the last 17 yrs 15 were spent in the states

[ Edited on 19-2-2007 by promach ]

promach ·

Here's the photos of the finished barrel. We only have to bore it out to size for the sleeve and then we are done...
Back onto the block next...

Does anyone know good supplies for carbon fibre. I am aware of Fibregast, Aircraft Spruce and Diversified in CA. Because of the war and airbus, a lot of the carban has been taken up and is hard to get. Any input is appreciated. 🙂

Greg

promach ·

The wife has a few problems posting photos of some of the finished parts
the barrels are all done , next up is working on the block /cam drive . Would like to
make carbon pushrods along with the injector bodies . When this project is finished just might get into some thing that has my interest...... carbon blowers but that will need to wait for now

greg

humpty ·

So Greg.... Hows it all going with JT's project?

promach ·

humpty wrote:So Greg.... Hows it all going with JT's project?
Making slow progress. We'd been having trouble with this forum so hadn't posted anything. Hope this photo's give you a good idea how things are.

I couldn't help but put together what we have so far.

Thanks Dave for the link to Cal-look. I still seem to be experienceing problems with posting photos, especially when going the photobucket route. In fact this seems to freeze me up every time.

For those who haven't seen it yet here's another link to ALL the photo's posted to date.

Judging by the cal-look thread - you guys are certainly getting a lot of interest in the US. I'm really enjoying watching as the enging progresses despite not being able to contribute any valuable technical input!
Alan

humpty ·

I hope you can master the technical difficulties of AVD.... I have been following the thread on the Cal-look forum for sometime, but I thought we could use something like this over once more.... It's a bloody marvel of an engine you and JT are building....

By all means, keep it coming!

Midget-JT ·

hi alan what technical input did you like to talk about as we are all ears thanks jt

promach ·

Over the last couple of weeks we have been very busy here at the shop with work and have not done to much with the engine . Plan to put the block back up on the mill and finish up a few things ,will be back with some shots later today or in the morning

Greg

Dasdubber ·

Midget-JT wrote:hi alan what technical input did you like to talk about as we are all ears thanks jt
Hi JT, what I meant was that due to my limited experience with hi-po engines and machining processes, there is not a lot of input I can provide....however I am enjoying reading and watching so I can learn. So any info and details you guys post is appreciated! I've been following along with the cal-look forum thread from the start.

Best of luck with the project - it will be a momentous occasion when you finally get to fire-up stage!
Alan

70Turbobug ·

Wow!! What you guys can do is incredible!! Fantastic project! Will this be a naturally aspirated engine? How much horsepower are you expecting?
It´s good to see that you guys are doing this kind of work and developement.I think I´ve found another source for a custom crank...

promach ·

This engine will be injected JT needs to make about 320 hp to be in with a chance , which we should be able to do . was checking the crank out last nite to see if it had moved when it was stress relieved , moved about .005" which is ok

Greg

promach ·

we have the head back with the port layout finished and yes Dave we will post some photos of them

promach ·

Hi guys,

It's been a while since we posted here. WE have been very busy working on this project and beginning on the next. You can check out some of our progress on our brand new website www.racespecs.com

We hope to be able to post more pics very soon.

Greg

promach ·

we are still working on the project
time is the problem ...just not enough of it

what is left ?

have about a days worth of work to do and the frist set of heads are done , have the bottom end finished (cam , lifters ,block etc) injectors are done
have to make the rocker gear and intake manifold

Greg

humpty ·

Good to see your still at it.... Feel you pain in regards to time and the lack of it.... Of course the I have the opposite problem.... Made sure I have plenty of time (only work two days a week!!!!), but now don't have loads of bread to throw at the projects!!!!.... But the efforts of others keep the dream alive!

dragvw2180 ·

Hey Greg have you been working on the engine lately ?

dragvw2180 ·

What ever happened with this project , was it ever completed ?
