one of the most commonlly forgotten VWs was the very first watercooled and front wheel drive, the K70 from 1969
it was to replace the unpopular 411 and 412 as vws large family sedan cept it was even more unpopular than them
replaced in 73 by passats

type 34 karmann-ghia??

1500S ·

Not a vehicle but an engine. I haven't seen for a long time the INTERMEDIATE 40 HP engine as fitted to around the 1960 or 61 Kombi only. Anyone on that one?

The K70 looks like an old ford escort. Would look nice a bit lower to the ground. 🙂

whatnow ·

what about the GOL and all of the other unusual south american models?

1500S, i don't have a full motor but i have a set of bastard heads and 2 gen stands that i think are off bastard motors.

1500S ·

The intermediate engine was readily identified in earlier times with the tinware having raised sections where the cylinder numbers were pressed. The thrust on the crankshaft was taken by thrust half rings on the centre bearing rather than no. 1 as we know it on all other engines. Can't remember what difference there was elsewhere on that engine now but they were treated as if they were diseased not long after introduction.

They broke crankshafts at very low mileage. VW went back to thrust on no.1 within 12 months. They also had different head design and O/D of barrells to heads was bigger than 36hp but smaller than 40hp.

Lots of info & pics here:

The K70 wasn't really a VW...
it was an Auto Union/NSU car already for production when Volkswagen took over the company. It was produced from late 1970 from the new Saizgitter factory. It was made for 5 years and only 211,151 cars were made.. they are now very rare..
The front wheel drive car had 4 seperate tappet covers, one for each cylinder...
so the engine was from NSU....
The first Audi did {I think] looked like the K70....

This car was related to the famous NSU RO80 - the worlds first mass produced Rotary engined car...
There was one at the VW nationals one year, it had a Mazda rotary engine... Good looking car...
I also liked the 4 door 412 VW... also a very rare car...

These details from a book of mine.. how accurate they are
I don't know... many VW books I have , are very inaccurate...
Main problem these days, is books relating to the year the car was made... NOT the actual model year..

I really love the look of the 412 VW Variant

First time, I saw one, was around the early 70s,
it was parked in Newcastle... NSW..

I always wanted a 4 door air cooled Volkswagen.....

its a shame!!
RHD 412s were sold in the UK, New Zealand and New Guinea but Not in Australia...

They were also sold in South Africa...

The K70 was released as a Volkswagen in November 1970
and sold to December 1974... 210,082 cars sold??

It Won Car of the Year in Sweden in 1970-71...

VW did not try to sell it as it wanted to sell 411-412s...

All VW did to the K70 , was change the badges from NSU to VW....

but they did need access to front wheel drive/ water cooled engines....

You left out the type 182 the trekker
...
[ the RHD version of the type 181....]

only 300 were imported into the UK...

these would also be very rare vehicles...

imagine owning one of only 300 made....
