Seriously - cant believr know one knows this kombi.
Cant be that many of them

Some serious bidding now though.

Anyone have a guess as to what it will sell at??

MickH ·

$28000:o or there abouts. I wouldn't think it was dodgy. There are some experienced people bidding.....

[ Edited on 16-1-07 by Mick H ]

57 Cal look ·

i am more than happy to be wrong on this ... but that looks like a 63 not a 60 ... can the greater minds who know far more about kombis shed some light ?:alien

Bizarre ·

Menangler ·

I'm thinking over $20,000, bet the reserve is around that too.

:blush oops!

splitbusaustralia ·

RHD walk-thru is quite unusual!

$30k or more - logically if you paid that and then spent
another $25-$30k restoring it you're on (or still below)
current market value for a restored bus with everything
done 'properly'.

NathanVW ·

Reserve not met at $20,200. This guy obviously knows what he has lets hope it goes to someone who will restore that correctly

bugDbug ·

Highest bidder has no previous feedback and only registered in the last few days!!!! Jacking up the price I would say. Emailed seller for an inspection but no response.

dnt be so sure :P think i know who you are talking about .... he just hasnt been an internet user for long lol

Bizarre ·

OK - game on.

Reserve has been met at $25,600.

Spellbound ·

Wow...nice. Don't know much about Busses but...is that cheap for something that rare??

GASBNR ·

yeap that could sell in the UK for 15,000 pounds.
When you concider the English would pay 35,000 pounds for a finished LHD.

LOOK OUT it has days to run

[ Edited on 18-1-2007 by empikg ]

Bizarre ·

Nothing is cheap - but yes it IS rare.

More to the fact - this IS available.

You cant "just" buy a propper 23 window.
Well - not here in Aust anyway.

A finished one IS worth $50k plus

NathanVW ·

$30,600 now, god damn

Racer X ·

has anyone confirmed it to be a genuine original 23 window yet has anyone been able to see it in person yet ? :vader

Bizarre ·

I think it would be "propper" as it has the false / 2nd underneath floor.

57 Chook Shed ·

It`s getting a bit over priced for something that needs so much work.
Awesome Bus though.

LHD but a '58

$2.5 = 1 UK pound.

Shipping?

What's it all mean? You tell me...

twoguns ·

yes. but not WALK THRU, and not RHD.

but like all things... its what the buyer is prepared to pay.

lethal_oz ·

Was checking out on DSK and I the talk seems to be that it’s doggie.
Not a true 23 but may even be two 21 welded together. I don't know much about buses the word is that only like 3 or so right hand drive 23 window walk throughs were ever imported originally and at least 2 were bought and shipped to the UK.
I think some more research needs to be done on this one.
Cheers
Lethal

avwboy ·

extremely unlikely that someone has gone to the trouble of grafting on the whole top section of roof to "make" a 23 out of a 21

notice a it has the correct narrow door and big window for a 23

lethal_oz ·

good point... but weirder things have happened. yeah I'm not sure.
Isn't it a little strange that there are no questions at the bottom of the auction page?

[ Edited on 22-1-2007 by lethal_oz ]

vw54 ·

looks nice i think i will buy it

wish i had of kept the old bus i had back in 1976

twoguns ·

something i can not figure, is that it is a '61 model but it has post 64 front indicators?? dont know if this is correct or unique.

vw54 ·

Looks like there an ADD on as the post 64 never came out in the 23 window

Unless someone has added the 2 rear 1/4 windows

Now that posses some questions

I know thw rear door is right the Micro busses had the bigger glass fitted

Still think i will but it

twoguns ·

will you just, dave! there is a few of us looking, you know. 😵

fortunate there is a lotto draw between now and hte close time of hte auction... you never know!!

** update... DAMN LOTTO!

Spare wheel is located in the rear left hand corner. Originally fitted with Safari windows all factory mounting brackets and holes are still in place. Comes with original rear factory jail bars. Lights have been updated. Vehicle has rust in typical places including sills, floor and around front windows and will require full restoration.
could cover/explain the indicators

[ Edited on 22/1/2007 by avwboy ]

twoguns ·

well we will jsut have to deduct that from the 'originality factor' in the final price, hey...

missed that little bit in the description.

crewcabconnection ·

then you gotta get NOS or good original parts to refit it. Get a body guru to fix it properly (and understands how to deal with 21/23 windows). This is what makes something like this a 'grail' bus. If you buy it for 40k and just keep it, then you'll see the price rise and rise over the years to come and would make a wise investment.

Fixing it? - gotta think that you'll need at least 40k to get this back to glory ... and then I hear there are a couple of nut and bolt restos waiting for new owners and 75k with no takers...

PHAT BUG ·

This bus is genuine, having seen it in the flesh many times.

Lights have been updated at some point, but it is a '60.

vw54 ·

OH its REALLY good Value

frog ·

Check this puppy from the late 90's, was at my place for a while some fella from Brisbane bought it from Valla for $8000.
It is a grafted roof and rear window job cut and welded along the belt line.
Not too bad a job either, I know I'd drive it daily for the 8k price tag but was scoffed at at the time.

frog ·

rear

crewcabconnection ·

wondered where that had gone, remember it was 'for sale' at a couple Sydney gatherings in the late 90s...but where is it now?

david777 ·

OK guys, now that this has sold, tell us some details please. Who sold it? Who bought it? What are the plans...

Hi All,

With regard to the 61 Kombi pictured with the grafted roof and curved windows, I had a bit to do with the building of this bus and know the full story in its development, but I would love to know where it is now.

It started life as a 1961 plain window van, it was in someones backyard being used as a shed and the owner said he would part with it if the buyer built him a shed. So he built him a shed and then built the the window van up to get it on the road again. Then came one of the first IRS conversions I have seen that the builder did himself, then the ball joint front end and disc brakes. Then a 1776 with Twin Kadrons. Then Fuchs. We were up at Nambucca doing a scout for some parts and Luke Pell offered the Samba roof section that was hung in the roof of their workshop,(There is a great story behind how he came about the roof section too) so home it came and the grafting began. All work was done at home and John the owner as always did awesome work plodding along in his driveway not even in the garage. I loved this van and I hope it is still around, genuine panels and hard work made this a treat to drive.

I hope John is still out there somewhere I heard he was now living in Bundaberg, but did this car up in Western Sydney.

Cheers,

David

I am also very interested in the story behind the E Bay Samba that has just sold if anyone knows some facts.

lethal_oz ·

So roof grafting does happen... see avwboy it's not that crazy after all

Calcool ·

Beleive me the Ebay Samba would have had indicator and Tailight grafts done not a roof graft, it is a lot easier to do the lights than the roof!

Cheers,

David

crewcabconnection ·

the eBay Samba is now in the safe hands of the DSK Brotherhood.

hi David.
it is in a paint shop on the north nsw coast getting some loving, from what i hear.
cheers

frog ·

Dave Calcool, I too liked this bus very much but the fella who bought it also bought a 65 dualcab off us seemed to have lots of money and taste for spits but no idea about them.
He nearly said you guys can buy it, I don't want it anymore and then changed his mind.
Last I know they were in a carport in Brisbane, his phone number was diconnected, never said where he was either so they were lost!
Kombidog, are you sure?, what do you know with no names needed?

crewcabconnection ·

I seem to remember 8k being on it when it was at the Panther's show a few years back ... hahahaha ... tell him he was dreamin'. Never under estimate how much people will pay to look at water or through 23 windows.

lethal_oz wrote:So roof grafting does happen... see avwboy it's not that crazy after all
hehe still pretty crazy !

how many do you think would have ever been done in oz ? :P

lethal_oz ·

not many I'd I reckon, sounds like a pretty big job
