Well, in a couple of months I hope to have my car ready for paint and would like to ask for some suggestions and ideas for paint schemes and colours for the bug. I've been finxed on an idea but would love to hear what you all have to suggest.
Here are a couple of pics if any of you wish to express your ideas in photoshopped form.

Slap some flames on it!

How about WRX rally car style - Blue yellow bits with gold wheels
[Edited on 4-5-2003 by fatboy]

how bout metalic silver withe twin metalic maron race stripes down the center ?? or even the same colours but the opposite way round still would look sick :bounce:thumb:bounce
BUG11Y ·
Gunmetal grey ghost flames whith a silver lining..something subtle love it black
baybuscamperkid ·
keep the matt black, but have a 2 tone with a pastel blue or something on the side panels.

(1) Go the Candly Apple Burgendy dripping or flashed with chrome over a stark / polar white or cream.
(2) Like the racing stripe/s idea too. It's low enough to sport stripes with out looking to "G'day, I'm a wanker!"ish.
Don't agree with the flames - power plant too modern and would avoid the matt black (even though it does look good) as that was the previous owners choice and it wouldn't be seen as your car. Would seem like you just bought it as is.

I've got it... I've got the answer

Or maybe this
Herbie ·
or even this
reub ·
Keep them coming guys. Love to see and hear them.
As for Herbie on steroids, how cool would that be. 🙂
Doug Sweetman ·
Depending on your pockets Reub, have you thought about the rnage of Chameleon paints ? (also called Chromalusion i think).
The one that comes to mind is a deep green / purple metallic colour filp.
Also a gold / purple metallic colour flip would be sweet.
Failing that - Porsche Guards Red (like mine !!!) or (not everyone like this one) Commodore Tiger Eye Gold.
Hows the rebuild coming along ?
I've managed to find a set of EMPI 8 spokes, and am trying to sort out the front end shimmies and shakes now 🙂
Cheers

How possible do you think you second pic would be herbie with the black cracked surface. Would that be possible or fairly fictional. I actually really like that. I'm thinking for the Dog-O-War. Never seen anything like it.
I would like to paint it black or Gun Metal Grey Hammertone but the father-in-law reckons the paint wouldn't harden enough to be usable.
Herbie ·
I have seen hammertone used in various form equally unsuccessfully, its to hard to make hammertone look like anything other than thats all the paint you had left in the shed and you thought you would give it a try.
As for the cracked paint look, it is easy and cheap to do, use GMH black because its water proof and make a template or stencil for a few different shapes and air brush the cracks using the stencil for your hard lines, have a play with an old panel or something.
I am tempted to paint a car to look like it is absolutely swamped with rust with holes as well you can paint a hole in the doors with some legs showing through and a hole in the front where you can see the spare wheel and a hole in the back where you can see the engine, all done with paint and shellac with water to make the fake rust.
Grey 57 ·
Like the crackle finish Herbie, very Homes and Gardens.
What about a darkside Herbie look.
Craig Torrens ·
what about brown shag pile carpet like "Dumb and Dumber" truck !!!!!!!😀😀

turn it into borris, the black bug from herbie, sure it was evil, but it kicked ass!
Peter Leonard ·
hell yeah do the boris look!!! (but i hated the skinny tires they used..)
they went to all that trouble and then decided to skimp on the wheels
fules!!! 😎
Herbie ·
You mean Horrace?
It wasnt far from horrace to start with
I am to tired right now but maybe later.
Does anyone have a photo of the vw beetle from the cars that ate paris?
pyr0 ·
love the mods herbie lol now thats a mean looking beetle a real "villan"
jboy82 ·
What are ghost flames?
they sound cool.
BUG11Y ·
could airbrush it to look like the cracks in the pavement i liked that pic gotta try it...😉
reub ·
Here you go. What do you think of this purple? A crude photoshop chop top and colour change.
reub ·
Or this......classic black.
reub ·
Or even this, black with cool flames.
The_Bronze. ·
Id have to agree about the hammertone being the "last thing in the shed" - you would get that impression. I think airbrushing is a much more valid option. I don't think I'd have the patience to stencil a whole car - I probably could but would bork at bushing it through dense scrub next time I'm trail blazing or dune blasting. I'd have to do a Wes and wait for everyone to come back. Don't wanna miss out on the fun trips offroad.
I like the idea of using different sheens for effect and will probably experiment with that in the future. Will have to steal the airbrush and have a play with that before I attempt anything as adventurious as your describing, rust / legs / tyres.
Herbie ·
If you were to rip up pieces of newspaper into small bits IE matchbox size and then wet them and stick them on the car mop up any excess with a rag or sponge then spray your light effects before they dry completely and fall off {do it under cover}
I think that would work fine, I might even do it to my splitty for shits and giggles yeah baby.

Sounds excellent Herb. I'd try it on an old panel first an see. Sound like a do able idea. Just had my neighbour over for conversation after dinner and suggested hi gloss black with a couple of coats of clear like the pic above for the Dog-O-War and couldn't convince him. He thinks Gloss yellow but I reckon it's too common on off road VW's.
I'm now thinking of going around the panel shops and having a look at mistints. Heaps cheap and only going to be thrown anyhow. Might be a good way to choose a cool colour.
I love that blue / purple on the chop top above. No good for a Baja. I think that stuff is about a grand a litre of somthing extortive like that.
There are some great ideas coming out here. Love the cracked pavement idea but doubt I could endure the heat within.
Doug Sweetman ·
I reckon your car has heavy leanings to the Hot rod world. Because of this i reckon you should go with a hot rod paint scheme.
Love the black and white rod with the flames. Sweet as.
Or Purple metallic with ghosted flames. That would definetely be nice.
How good are you with an airbrush ? Or how good is your chosen painter ?
baybuscamperkid ·
how bout polished black upper, pastel or offwhite lower, and silver-ghost flames, a little rod, a little resto and ALL custom.
lowdown ·
house of kolor!!!!
green and silver
NigeType3 ·
I think the VWRX should go the hot rod black with just yellow flames and the dog of war should go the clasic zebra stripes.
That would be so cool.:thumb
555bug ·
ok house of color purple with the flames from the rod with some tinted lights and grey powdercoated mags 🙂 so what do you think Reub? oh hold on I know how to make sure you like it.....one tick

reub ·
Right on!!!
That rocks 🙂
Cheers Stephen.

A quick question..
How are you going to get the body straight to accept the paint?
Are you going to use fibreglass to smooth the bumpy bits?
There will be much work to keep this together.
Best of luck.
555bug ·
last one...i really like this filter 🙂

rhrnldi dude,
The only real bumps i can see is where the chrome strips on the doors used to go, but that might just be the angle.
otherwise it looks like one staight motofok to me.
I reckon gloss black with some sort of pearl or ghost flames would look sooperb.
Wicked.
