Hang on to your Bay's. They'll be the splittys of the future.

I rather them rust in Aussie land... I got an Email the other day off the girl who bought mine over there and it is rusted out due to UK weather.. salt on the roads.. all the new chrome has rusted..... Its now sitting outside her front yard...
VWCOOL ·
Maybe because the Aussie assembled ones didn't have Euro-spec rustproofing

More reason to keep em over here where they dont need it... not that rustproofing makes much difference where roadsalt is concerned... that shit would eat through an aircraft carrier! :puke:

seconded if you want to keep them here start coughin up the dosh to keep them here, i know if i had 2 guys looking at one of my car and one was overseas, it would be the one that came up with a) the better offer and b) the money.
also its this guys right to do this if he is making a quid out of it so be it, also look at it this way by having less numbers in the kombi population hes helping make yours worth more as they will be harder to find
ok thats my rant for the day where is the :beer

There is a crazy German guy over here who has a yard full of Volkswagens and parts which you can see from the Highway... it just teases you! His place is like Fort Knox and he wont sell anything to anyone unless he is having one of his medicated days which you may be lucky to get a bolt from him?
He makes you stand at his gate while he goes and has a look, no-one has ever been in there, it's sad, they have been there for years and will never get a new life!

I feel very strongly about this, being a Brit whos moved to Aus and held off buying a splitty till i came out here (man, was that the wrong thing to do). I feel a bit embarassed/ ashamed by it all really!
My thoughts are that its utterly infuriating seeing the kombis leave, because its sucking the sole out of the aussieveedubbers scene, but then thats because they're worth a hell of a lot more in the UK than here. What we have now with splittys is a price correction in Aus which makes the whole importation to the UK a lot less palatable to all the UK companies scouring the land for decent splits. HOLD ONTO YOUR DECENT BAY WINDOWS!
I havent seen a decent Aussie split for sale in the UK for a while.
To put this into persepctive, I was at vanfest in 2005... there were 4 (four) companies that purely existed to import kombis from Australia. I chatted to one of the guys... "you had a good day mate"?
"Yeah, not bad, we sold eleven this morning"

I thought there was more to the " aussieveedubbers scene" than just some feral old Kombies going back closer to home:P. I personally couldn't care less if they stayed or left.In the modern world money talks.I've seen "good" kombies left to rot by those who couldn't/wouldnt sell them to anyone, let alone to someone overseas. People here have sold cars for an agreed price and are a little pissed they were taken overseas and re sold for profit:cry, but thats life. What about the 23 window on Ebay?? If the highest bidder is overseas will people have a sook that it left OZ?? Mr Bubblehead (you gotta hope thats not his real name:o) has hit the nail on the head. This post has been up before.Move on.:beer

Didn’t realise that this topic had been done to death, sorry
1. I understand and accept why this happens, just commenting that it’s a terrible shame
2. This is also happening with parts as well, and that affects us all. Anyone like to find me a 68/69 beam? THIS is what is sucking the sole out of the scene
3. No cars & no parts = no scene

The day we run out of Kombi's &/or parts thereof, I will stand naked at the top of Centrepoint tower & sing "It's raining men"!!
Ok, so they are going by the container load. They came by the SHIPLOAD, & then they started making them here.
People worry too much.

Sorry If I have upset you all with Kombis Going Going Gone.... But I was only putting it out there.
Samblers I agree with you... My Kombi which was restored by myself and a set back of 15k was sold for $7300 which YES I AGREED WITH but didn't think it would go Overseas 2x days later.
As this is just a disscussion about Kombis... Maybe the ppl who really like kombis and think it is terrible that we are losing Kombis to overseas should discuss it.. the ones that don't should read and move on and Don't reply

That is hardly a discussion about Kombi's.You made a statement and people responded accordingly.I like kombi's and have owned a dozen or so of them.My opinion is I don't care much if they are here or there as I see numerous vehicles rusting away daily so if they go OS to be restored, good. If someones selling them OS,good.Your opinion differs.Good. Every time you bring the subject up you get the same response. Why not do a poll to see if people mind. That way we will all know......"Should rusty hippy trucks get dumped on foreign shores"....
Samblers ·
You miss the point
The ones I see aren't the rusty hippy trucks my friend... they're the schmicko restored ones with no rust and great paint.
The rusty shit which you're seeing in Australia is what the brits have left behind
Twokombies ·
Well they don't get to take any other trophies home very often, even when they do it ain't for long. so I spose they gotta fill the containers going that way with something.

Hi All,
Just read this thread and yes I have to agree with you all about the amount of Dubs being shipped over here to the UK, its sad to see what is happening. Yup the scene is big, massive infact, prices are high on all vans and there seems no relent in the prices rising.
I've just spent 6 weeks in Victoria and managed to find a 56 bus for sale, so I made the purchase but I must be the only pom that is not exporting this treasure. I gave it to my partner for Xmas and is now being restored in Oz ready for when we come to live there in a few months.
Here's another shock for you guys...I'll be bringing my own bus over too, so there is one more bus for the aussie VW scene and I'm looking forward to all of it, whether a big scene or small scene, I'll be glad to be part of it 🙂
amazeer ·
uh oh, you are going to cause problems in the UK. I can see the volkszone thread now. UK bus going to OZ. save UK buses there arent enough good ones left.
Ragerty ·
Yes. It is quite unusual but damn sure I'm gonna sell it to someone before I leave after all the work i've put it to it so far.
I'll let you know if it reaches the magazines. lol
At least I know I'll be extended it life by about 50 years by bringing over.
Samblers ·
ONYA! 👍
toecutter ·
Just out of interest, how much would it cost to send a vw bus to the UK via ship?
And the second dumb question for the day is do they put them in sea containers or..................?
(this is just a question and I dont own a bus or going to own a bus or are sending anything to euroland.)
Ragerty ·
As i understand it, if you drop the engine out of the vehicle then it can be imported as parts so the tax is less to pay upon entry.
There are different ways of exporting goods such as stowage, hire a small or large container.
The bus will be in a container along with the rest of my belongings I decide to take in to the country so prices vary from £1800 - £8000...that I have been quoted.
With me emigrating and goods sent over are not for business use then entry costs should be a little cheaper.
Thats as i understand it.
I have also heard to pay alittle more for the container so it doesn't get placed on the top of the stack during transit as some do tend to get lost over board....perish the thought.
Schmoburger ·
I agree with most of Samblers sentiments....
somebody made mention of there being an upshot to it in that our kombis will become more valuable... yeh thats fine if you are a slimey sheister like the folks behind Gday Kombis and vwpartsrecycling who only see dollar signs when they buy up a cheap rustfree camper and ship it to there own shores.
But what if you are one of the hundreds of Australians who dont give a fuck about the resale value ever increasing, preferring to simply enjoy them for what they are rather than how much cash they will rake in?!?!
I'd like to still be able to readily access half decent 10 years from now, and buy my future kiddies Kombis without selling my left testicle if they hgappen to also catch the Kombi bug!
If increasing value is your motive for keeping a classic car... for instance an early bay, then you are in it for entirely the wrong reasons. It's like those wankers who do up WRX's and instantly plaster wanky For Sale stickers on the back windows! :puke:
I personally wouldnt give a flying rats ass if my bay camper was still only worth $5000 in 10 or 20 years time, as I have no intent to ever sell it anyway, and Im sure a lot of people would feel the same way... IMO, the value appreciation factor is very hollow and cheap justification to allow Kombis to be taken from our shores by the bucketload... :puke
But hey here's an idea to ponder... who feels like rounding up some nice good condition koalas and tassie devils to export over to england and the US???... it is very rare to find a nice rustfree low-milage example over there so it'd be a great cash-cow. And after all... they are only going to get wiped out by chlamydia and deforestation if they are left here on our soil... :duh
Flame my ass all ya like... it wont change my mind
Ragerty ·
Hey you might aswell send what ever you want to the UK we have everything else. Just as long as they are not educated or with no money and can bludge on the UK society then no doubt we'll have em. lol
amazeer ·
cool, lets start exporting our new zealanders! 😉

While I appreciate what you are saying...I would love to re-visit this post (which I doubt will be possible) in another 20 years. You may have "no intentions of selling it" now but you are YOUNG and I'm sure your life will change dramatically within the next 20 years, so that is a fairly bold statement to make.... The way it's going,if you can find petrol it will probably cost $5000 to fill your tank in 20 years,so the vehicles value wouldn't be of concern !! I've also got a "rare" VW that i know I will never sell. It was never sold here in OZ so is a private import and the likelyhood of it's value increasing is not why I want it. If my circumstances changed and I was forced to sell for any reason then $$$$ would talk.I wouldn't care where it went.Everyone has a differing opinion though and that is fine.:beer

Yet another unfounded comment........MOST classic car collections, apart from stating the obvious (the collectors like cars) DO appreciate in value, and are veiwed as an appreciable asset by the collectors, banks and financial institutions. In fact the purchase of cars for a collection is seen as an investment financially, plus the collectors just like cars!!! Yes I do know a few classic car collectors.2 of them have very early beetles, but non would suggest an early bay as some sort of classic collectable.....their appreciable value has not increased enough to make them viable and there are too many of them around to be any sort of "endangered species".
Anyway....a "Bay Window" is a commercial vehicle,not a car, but in some ways it's a classic......who would have thought.....Bloody Hippy Trucks:jesus:alien

As do I dude, as do I... AFter seeing a familiar silver on blue '73 on there I think I have just worked out who all these people going by the name of "Bidder 1", "Bidder 8" etc etc are... :puke:
5PL1TDCS10N ·
That white on blue 57 was for sale for quite awhile for $10K...I guess no one here thought it was worth it here in OZ so its off to the UK. I guess to keep the buses here we have to start paying what they are worth on a world market..not an aussie one.
As long as it goes to a good home thats the main thing. People will always try and make a profit..thats just life...we all do it in some way or another.

BIdder 1, Bidder 8 etc is the new way Ebay displays auction histories whilst they're still live 😉
Anyways, for what its worth, even if i was selling my bus, Sod the extra money I would only sell it to someone living in Aus (and preferably WA so i could still see it driving around!).
flipflopsurfer ·
The blue splitty was for sale in Vic, came down from the NT. I think the original ask was 15k then 10k. I asked for some extra pics when it was being sold, 10k is a lot of money for something that needed a fair bit of rust repair and paint to get nice. It's right that splitty prices have gone up, but it's not really the price of the van that puts people off, it's the price of the spares and rust repair that's the shocker, that's why people baulk at those prices here, who wants a split sat in the garage, waiting till you can get all the bits together and someone to do the work.

This has been my point when this subject comes up again & again & again.
These vehicles don't just magically materialize when the exporters come to town. They were always there & our mob either don't want 'em or aren't prepared to pay for 'em.
I'll repeat myself again on this line as well; As far as selling anything goes, he who hands me the cash gets the goods. Where one of my cars go when it leaves my driveway is none of my concern. It aint mine anymore.
