After over 1.5 years of searching for an early squareback, i have finally got one. I am pretty sure it is a 1965. It has been converted to 12v and disc brakes.
It needs a bit of TLC and attention to the usual rust spots in the floor pan. It isn't as rusty as others i looked at though. I spent saturday afternoon cleaning the previous owners junk from everywhere and giving the interior a good clean which left the seat trim in better nick than i thought.
The engine is a twin carb from a later model which seemed to run fine, the clutch/gearbox will also need some attention.
Overtime after it is registered and on the road I plan on slamming it, white walls, roof racks and some other bits and pieces.

Loox pretty good mate...well done!
Valkyrie ·
i love it Liam and im glad for u that you finally found one
Octa ·
Looks great... I want one, all I need is some money. What year did 4 bolt start? I thought it was 68. You may have a later pan on an early body or an IRS and disk convertion.
In thesamba.com there is some info on how to decode your VIN to see the exact year. If you pm me the vin I could help you find out. It would be interesting to find out if you have a different VIN on the pan than on the body.
Liam_81 ·
To tell you the truth, i have NO idea as to what model it is. I will chase down that VIN number for you.
PHAT BUG ·
Lookin good Liam, Gotta love a square, can't wait to see what you do with it.
Good one mate, Rhett.
Turbo54 ·
That shows that persistance finally paid off, nice find. Looks very similar to mine and engine and brake combo aswell. Now enjoy!

Well done Liam, I knew you would find your square eventually, one and a half years sure beats seven years in the desert. Did you find this in canberra? How much rust did you find under the seats/ carpet? I just had some work done on mine, front tie rods & wheel align/balance $198.00...exaust repair $150.00..new shocks $300.00. sand and fish oil/paint floor pan$200.00 ...full tank of gas$23.20,driving an early square at 65mph with windows down, pop outs extended and engine tuned..PRICELESS! Enjoy🙂
Liam_81 ·
Yeah, it was found on the other side of Canberra that i live on. After a good vacuum under the carpet... there really isn't that much rust in it to tell you the truth which is good.
I am aiming to have it on the road, slammed and rimmed by June long weekend for the DSK Split Together.

Very nice find. So solid looking!
Mine 66 squareback is still sitting under the carport waiting for me to do something with it. The floor pans behind both front seats are gone!!! Fred Flintstone style!
I'm aiming to start work on it shortly. Bet you've all heard that from a VW nut before. 😂
Type3Sicko ·
Liam, do you mean Tuggeranong or Belco? Maybe even Quangers? Who said there's no style in Canberra? Go hard!
Liam_81 ·
Sorry mate, I live in Tuggeranong 5 minutes up the road from where you picked yours up from. The type 3 was in Mitchell / Belco.
I went for a road trip today, found some bits + pieces for the roof racks.

If the interior is correct then it's a 1964 model.

Oi Liam any Progress pics?
or is it still how it was after the betty badges?
BenettonVW ·
Nice one mate, I have something that can bring up that chrom on your mirror too..
Type3Sicko ·
Liam, have you had your 3 serviced yet? Micheal doin it or you goin elsewhere? Guess you'll be hangin on to this one...nice 🙂
Liam_81 ·
Nah mate, It is still sitting in the garage at the moment. I have a trip to melbourne this weekend with the mrs that i have been saving up for. Once this is out of the way it is full steam ahead on the type 3. Just collecting the essential parts for it, getting it rego'd and on the road, then the fun stuff after that.
I will get my brother Marty to help out with all the engine work. He is head mecahnic at Beetle Exchange in Canberra.
I am def hanging on to it, not many out there and I know how hard they are to find in decent condition.

BenettonVW wrote:Nice one mate, I have something that can bring up that chrom on your mirror too..
Oooo... tell me more :P
I hate my side mirror... i want the standard items.
Liam_81 ·
Got the girl startedon Saturday, got a new battery... hooked that up, ran some new fuel lines and started her up and took her for a quick spin to see what needs doing. Apart from needing a major service she is mechanically good to go. There was no problem with the clutch and it is the quietest gearbox I have had in a type 3 (this is my 3rd), not much play in the steering either.
Happy days.
dvs_vw ·
good work, its a good feeling to get a car running easily and taking it for a maiden spin. I also took my 55 oval for its first drive on the weekend, started it a while a go but had a few fuel leaks, all good and fixed now, and drives pretty well for a car thats been sitting for 3 years, brakes and clutch are good, box is a little noisy, but should be a good driver!
keep us updated!!!
Type3Sicko ·
got any fresh pics of the old girl Liam? i'll be down canberra way late this month, maybe hook up and have a lager? I almost forgot..i have a spare drivers side mirror for you Liam, do you want me to send it via post or bring it with me when i come to canberra? it's in top nick and is complete with good glass and thread, let me know via email kombinationdetailing@yahoo.com.au, cheers! Adam

Liam_81 ·
Nah, no new pics yet Adam. It is much the same as the previous pics, maybe a little dirtier?
As for the mirrors. I will get back to you on those... i have something a little different in mind for the mirror set up. If that doesn't work out, I will let you know. Shout out when your planning on heading down.
Type3Sicko ·
No problems, will be down around the 20th April until early May
baggedbug68 ·
hey liam gotta catch up with ya the next time im up that way for tech and have a gander at the beast!!
BenettonVW ·
Local Bunnings, ask for grade 0000 steel wool. Best thing for chrome EVER!
Liam_81 ·
Should also mention... she doesn't drip oil. It has been sitting in the same spot since I had it, not a drop underneath her! (yes it has oil in it)
Type3Sicko ·
what are the heaterboxes like Liam, and are you running a stock muffler?
Liam_81 ·
Its got a thunderbird on it. Heater boxes are pretty good from what I remember
Klaus ·
you need one of these in the back he he
Liam_81 ·
That would be nice, I have heard of them being done... but how do you sort the cooling out?
Klaus ·
used the rad out of the front cut, cut out the wheel well and ran cooling pipes thru tunnel. will get pick of front of car. Takes about 20ltrs of coolant
kroozzn63 ·
man that is a perfect little bitch to slam
Liam_81 ·
Update: Type 3 has just been regod and is now on the road. ALl rust has been cut out of the floorpan and bits and pieces done to get a roadworthy. I also have these:
Now the fun begins!
Liam_81 ·
Hubcaps arrived today, wacked them on. I still need to paint the wheels the same colour as the body.
jo_tas ·
Hey Liam.. sweet square!
Where did you get the caps from and how much?
Liam_81 ·
Thanks Jo.. Got them from Classic VeeDub
Klaus ·
very cool, good to see it regoed
Liam_81 ·
A tiny update. Painted the wheels to match the body over the weekend, it looks a lot tidier. I Also chucked the venetians on and gave half of the type 3 a polish. The paint is a lot better than what I thought.
We are waiting on some tyres to come in, once they arrive we will be chucking the portawalls on and lowering it. After that only a couple of little things will be done. I have a motash for the bonnet and will need to get some new carpet and some sounds.
Work has also started on restoring an old roof rack.
Pics up soon.
jo_tas ·
Just letting you know.. cause i forgot..
When lowering the back, and putting it all back together.. start the bolts for the spring plate before getting the torsion arm back onto the ledge. I discovered this the hard way after trying to get the bolts back in afterwards.. :jesus
I had to use a longer bolt to pull it in, then put the stock bolts back in after.
Liam_81 ·
Thanks for the tip!
Here is how it is now.
Blinds on and wheels painted with a bit of a polish.
jo_tas ·
Wow! That is looking so nice now! Some chrome wheel trim ring thingos would really set that off!
Maybe whitewalls too? But i'm biased... :P
65busser ·
How nice is that? Has come up an absolute treat.
Liam_81 ·
jo_tas wrote:Wow! That is looking so nice now! Some chrome wheel trim ring thingos would really set that off!

Yeah, I am pretty happy with it. It has scrubbed up. I do have the white walls already so they will be going on once the new tyres arrive. Dress trims are on the way also. I am just itching to slam it, I don't want to do it until I am happy with the wheels though.
jo_tas ·
Yeah and how low you go depends on your tyres.. i'm 2 splines down on the front, and i'm getting rubbing at full lock with the 165's..
Liam_81 ·
Yup, got 145s on order. I was going 135s.. I am going to get it as low as possible... aiming for avwboys ride height.
jo_tas ·
Hehe yeah, i wanted to go really low, but Hobart has alot of steep driveways and dodgy speedbumps, so being a daily driver i wanted some comfort (and not do too much damage to the car!!)
Liam_81 ·
Ahhh, this isn't my daily. But my daily rides on bumpstops anyway...
baggedbug68 ·
nice work Liam did i tell ya i am pickin up a type3 sedan in the next week or so?
MrScooter ·
i'm watching this with envy. cant wait too see it slammed
jo_tas ·
Ooh! Err.. what are they?
Liam_81 ·
They are my side mirrors... usually seen on harleys.
jo_tas ·
Ahh nice!
I'll be interested to see how you mount them!😉
Liam_81 ·
just using the standard mounts.

Liam_81 ·
Update:
Being so low I dragged the old muffler off (it had holes in it anyway). So it now was a new one which has been tucked up a little. It has a nice cleaner note to it too.
A couple of pics from the DSK Kangaroo Valley weekend

hey Liam sweet square man! ive just bought a 65 square and am planning to do the same thing with it...
