Go Nick!
the '73 gone now?
Dasdubber ·
Nice one Nick - I know what it is like restoring a car on a student's budget - (sorry to hijack your thread) but here is a pic of my old 63 which I did throughout my first uni degree. Like you say...one step at a time!
[ Edited on 22-1-2007 by Dasdubber ]
dvs_vw ·
looks like a good starting point, like the choice of wheels for it....should be good once all done if your old car was anything to go by!
66deluxe ·
Nice one bond and what will the donk be?
Dasdubber ·
We need more pics Nick! 😀
bond ·
thanks michael - will be interesting, being a different kettle of fish starting from a little closer to scratch than the 73.
damo mate - initially thought type 4 ie: that 914 donk fs. and build it up. still sitting on that thought. then there is the 2430 stroker type 1 i may have mentioned to you once before. i think either way it will be n/a. although i was somewhat inspired by that manx with the 2332 and cb hideaway turbo kit. in no hurry. need to research, talk, learn a little more and then ill start throwing $ around and not just dreams 🙂 - what are your thoughts mate?
alan! i will supply more pics as requested hehe. i love the '76' bug you did... brings a tear to the eye to see it now... very sad
thanks nick

Bondy, i say build a type 4 for it, although i did just get a 78.4mm CB stroker crank for another engine to build in the future, but mate it's up to you i'll be waiting on your decision. Ta Damo.

spent the weekend removing the body from the pan. a learning experience in itself. not that it was a lot of work. still managed to keep me busy for the better half of saturday sunday with the purchase of a tradeair compressor from bunnings which turned out to be good for 15minutes before melting the motor windings. the gmc that replaced it looks like its cut for the job 🙂
some pics of where im at.
[ Edited on 28-1-2007 by bond ]
bond ·
and more - the last pic was the adrenaline shot sunday morning. need my fix for the week 😉
16"? but dont tell anyone.
cleaned these up nice. save $ rechroming i think.
and sunday mornings....
66deluxe ·
Nice wheels my man.
LUFTMEISTER ·
Is that a Deltek GrassGrubber or a Rock Hopper your riding there young fella?:P
looks good Nick!
h ·
hey nick lookin sweet.. we'll have to get together for a ride (2 wheels) to the glorious cafe soon early one sunday morning yeah..? 😀
bond ·
sat 17/2/07 - stripping the pan prior to sending for sandblasating and powdercoating hopefully this week if funds prevail.
you can see the amount of crud that comes off after 50years and the debri left after the previous owner had the body sanblasted whilst on the pan......
nick - see everyone at dubs tomorrow 😉

Dasdubber ·
Hey Nick, if you want to get your bug body off the crates etc, you could borrow my body trolley - I don't think I'll be needing it for quite some time. It has wheels so you can move it around (one person job) which is a bonus.
You'd have to borrow a ute or trailer to pick it up from the gold coast though as I don't have a vehicle that can transport it to brissy.
Let me know either way, if not no dramas - it will just stay beside my house 🙂
cheers
Alan

need more pics of yours, Al!!
Dasdubber ·
Not much progress mate - just trying to save some cash to buy all the bits!
bond ·
hey guys!
well - pan was sandblasted and powdercoated!... then.......
decided to convert to irs as brad @ custom up here in brisbane mentioned it may have been one thing you (alan) wish you had done with the ragtop?.
so - have sent the pan down to custom offroad where they are doing the irs conversion. aswell as this will have the innside lip of the frame horns shaved and the tubes welded into the bulk of the horns - giving the option to go either beetle or kombi box.
the beam has had the 2" narrow with weld in adjusters. done also by custom.
i have sourced early type 3 rear drums in fantastic condition thanks to don damo!
and am awaiting on the new disk kit from vvds thanks to boris.
oh - and hopefully if he reads this - a big thanks to terry (subibaja) who is an absolute champion helping transport the bare pan around the country for me!
will take some progress pics asap and get them posted!
alan - you have u2u
nick
Dasdubber ·
Progress sounds good Nick - yeah I did wish I IRSed the ragtop. Depends on what you want to do with it I guess.....with the oval I intend to stay swingaxle because it will be more a strip car than one set up for corners.
Look forward to seeing the pics.
bond ·
well - the s/a pan has been converted to irs. have had a kombi box kit installed also as ive decided to run a 091 for longevity and given the motor that will hopefully one day sit in the back i'll more than likely be thankful ive gone this way down the track... some pics of where we're at. (apologise as i had the hicups whilst taking some of these photos hehe)
- rolling pan
- 2"narrow - also have a bracket now with a steering dampener. and new steering box.
- a couple of the vvds disk kit
- irs conversion
- kombi box conversion kit - with bellhousing and midmount straps.
i think financially and given the detail i want to acheive - we may be looking at completion by warwick 08! hehe
nick
bond ·
next on the cards - 091 box rebuild, kafer bar, brake lines + master cylinder.
will take some more pics in better light soon and update accordingly.
nick
Dasdubber ·
Nice progress Nick - cheers for the update!
what is your thoughts re. the vvds front brake kit. Looks like I will head down that road but I haven't seen them in person yet.
66deluxe ·
Looking good Nick.
LUFTMEISTER ·
HELL of a skateboard you have there laddy. Those straps should hold your feet real nice.😉
bond ·
update. more to come over the weekend.
nick
66deluxe ·
$%^& yeah. Nice one Nick.
Dasdubber ·
Was wondering how long it would take to see a set of these on an oz car (apart from the single cab imported from the US a little while back). Good stuff!
dvs_vw ·
there are a few sets on cars down south, and these are hardly on a car, more like a pan.....🤓🙅 :P 😉😉....yes I'm jealous 😵
Looking good dude, get some more progress shots up as it comes along....looking forward to seeing it come together, should be one very nice bug once all done! :thumb

I did not realise so many dubbers also rode sports bikes 🙂 let me know if there is an AVD power cruise.
Cheers Stephen
bond ·
avd bike day. not a bad idea. ive parted with the cbr600rr. am now on a k6 gsxr1000. lovely bike.
looks like i'll end up keeping the body. in the spirit of making sure its done right, the body, gaurds etc etc will be sandblasted and etch primed within the next week or so.
this time, im thinking.. black 🙂
will update again over the weekend!
nick
h ·
hey bike day... im in..
bond ·
the pan with escras. looks like i may end up having to narrow the beam a little more and use spacers to offset the rim. here it is anyhow :
nick
koolkarmakombi ·
You poor student you!
Really nice work Nick. I bet you sit and look at it 😏
bond ·
thats about all ive been doing at the moment! sitting and looking at it. have got the new dual circuit master cylinder. 4 red adjustable konis. all brake hard lines/hand brake cables etc etc to setup on the pan possibly over the weekend if time prevails.
will have a small update over the weekend. pics to follow.
nick
66deluxe ·
Where's the pic of your new donk, mate?
bond ·
just a quick update - i'll take 1... in black... 🙂
nick
LUFTMEISTER ·
not low enough😁
Dasdubber ·
Surely you would be aiming to go a bit lower Nick?
That example is riding a little too high in my opinion 😉
reub ·
hmmm...that's sweet as...keep thinking chrome bumpers and headlight rims would look better on my 58...but then, why conform? :thumb
bond ·
ok - a real update. picked up the motor on saturday, it is a 2L type 4.
adjustable konis.
and i couldnt help but put one more shot in 🙂
koolkarmakombi ·
You've got it baaad man!
There is not turning back- gotta ride it out 😂
Don't think that the airbox will fit under the hood-jax...

Have you tried pouring coffee beans in there??
Looks like a great bunch of bits youhave there
Turbo54 ·
This motor used to be boosted... right?
Love those wheels... as you already know.
T54
bond ·
the motor i purchased off barry mac who some of you may know (who might i add is a champion bloke)
its a 87x105 type 4, je pistons, custom cam, big valve heads @10.2:1, porsche fan shroud, 44idfs. currently has a 009 but would like to run the unilite ive acquired if it will fit.
barry used the motor when he raced desert rallys. hence how dirty it is. it has a dry sump which i doubt ill be useing, nor will i use the airbox setup he has fabricated. same goes for the exhaust which i will more than likely have custom made.
my good friend the great don damo will aid his expertise with tearing this bad boy down. as we have all seen, the work damo does is second to none and will not go unappreciated.
appreciate the comments. is slowly but surely coming together.
will keep updates coming.

well - started the tear down of the motor at damo's tonight around 7:30pm and finished up around 11:30pm. awesome night and an unreal learning opportinuty for myself - what can i say, damo is THE shit.
turns out i was incorrect as to what i thought i had purchased. the heads are 914 heads 48x38, 82mm scat counterweighted crank x 105mm JE pistons (2840cc), 5.5" rods, custom cam and the list goes on.
started taking pictures but the camera died. hopefully damo will post some pics tomorrow if he feels up to it.
nick
oh - and the belt driven coffee grinder was made by toyota and appeared to hold transmission fluid? (red) as i found out all over my white shorts..... ha

Nice work Bond, its good to see dubbers helping dubbers. I've heard Damo is the man, too bad he's 1000k's away could've helped with my 2L turbo.
Keep up the good work just wak A1 1 3/4 headers with 3" muffler on that baby and watch it scream.A properly set up 091 with short Albins gears you should get some serious 1/4 times or will it be a freeway flyer/road warrior?
66deluxe ·
Some pics of the teardown, inspection shows no cracks in the heads will be able to tell after i dissasemble and media blast heads, which were originally done by FAT Performance in California, Crank is a Scat 82mm with porsche journals still have to dissasemble and measure to confirm all up is looking positive at the moment after cleaning will give me a better idea. And the pic of Bond himself, look at that enthusiasm. Cheers Damo.
bond ·
cmon damo - there was a pic of you in there too!!!!! hehe
Dasdubber ·
Nice stuff gents - I love seeing the innards of these "big block" bad boys of the VW world!!
66deluxe ·
I was going to post the pic of me but all you can see is my arm.
Joel ·
coffee grinder is a powersteering pump
but on a vw??? hmmm

bond ·
well there you go! thanks joel!

took a step back unfortunately over the last few weeks and sold off the brakes in another of my "undecided tantrums" that i throw 🤪 so the pan is now no longer rolling.
did however spend the day completely stripping the body (minus doors) ready for sandblasting and etch priming over the next few weeks in preperation for some body mods.
and the drivers side heater channel 🙁
bond ·
check out the pics after stripping the motor - and then with a little of damo's fairy dust........
914 heads 48x38 with 5th stud.
manifolds and heads are slightly ported at current...
105mm JE pistons
and cast barrells
depending on how things play out they will more than likely be coated through these guys - http://www.thermaledgecoating.com.au
or may go nikasil.
and the mallory unilite
slowly chipping away.
555bug ·
Nice, you have to keep moving to be ready for Warwick 2010 🙂
bond ·
well. its been 6 months after dropping the body at global powdercoating at salisbury but we got there. body sandblasted and black etch primed. golde rag clip was also blasted and primed. pics to follow.
although its difficult to see with the black etch and the light, there is some chronic pitting in the roof. most of which will be removed for the rag clip.
pan is currently down at cvd for custom suspension fabrication. will get the body down to them in the near future 🙂
motor is at thermal edge coatings at virginia - am having a new 2L type 4 case machined with welded 5th stud and internal clearancing for the stroked crank. as well as some thermal coatings in combustion chamber on heads, cylinders honed and pistons coated in a dry lubricant.
091 box is sitting on my garage floor hehe.
things are moving again. happy days.
Dasdubber ·
Nice stuff Nick - good to hear the body is finally back! At least it has given you lots of time to ponder things 🙂
Al
Mick058 ·
Onya Bond, keep pushing on.

Back from the dead Bond. Hello how you been.
LUFTMEISTER ·
Welcome back Mr Bond. Where you up to?
h ·
yes mr bond?? good to see ur still about 😀
vwsteve ·
😂 all my hard long hours of bodywork sandblasted off again,oh well, it was only a quick cheapy for crazy george, those pitts in the roof bring back memories, good that a rag roof will replace them😎
sikras ·
does any1 know wat happened ? is it finished ?
Dasdubber ·
Still in the works....some cool tricks under this bug. Hopefully Nick will pull his finger out and do something wtih the body soon 😉
DieSchnelleKafer ·
sick dude, how old r u? looks like your doing really well, and trust me i know how hard this stuff is to do. save money, chose parts to order, organise ssndblasting,
sick sick stuff man really
bond ·
custom offroad have the pan and body and are working on finishing the a-arm front end to suit the billet airbags - the rear is done and bagged also - eta on that part of the pan is april 2011.
al - still have the rag clip there ready to go - will talk to you bout that in the coming months.
the 2840 type IV is with Mr Matt Berry in cooroy - he is starting the balancing and build of the motor - he has also acquired a set of 48idas (made to 51.5s) for her.
originally when I started, i was going to have a lot more involvement in this but took on a small business - 2yrs and 20kg later.. ha..
bout to start one of these 24hr gyms in brisbane cbd within the next few months so between that, the pool shop and trying to lose the kgs i'd put on in the last 2yrs - a little time poor.
blair - am 25 mate - cool build, great thread, keep it up! good choice on the dtm - will most likely go the same.
trying to take advantage of the american $ atm so the build is moving but without huge involvement on my part 🙁
have also taken up sportsbike track riding pretty seriously - spending too much time at QR and pumping through slicks like there's no tomorrow. litre bikes are the shit - massive rush coming into turn 3 & 6 hot as on the picks with the rear chatin away - is absolutely epic.
appreciate the push along from all - will endevour to update with some pics!!!
nick
bond ·
so its 2014. 7 years and $25000 of storage.......
the black beauty is free at last!
