I was told minimum $1600 by my VW specialist about 12 months ago. THat's a good engine rebuilder starting with a decent core. every extra just goes up from there.

Yep... and dont think just because ya find one mob who will do it a few hundred bucks cheaper that you are getting a good deal.
WHen it comes to engine builds ya get what ya pay for if ya know what I mean... :o
Cheers!

I wouldn't waste money on bits to make it look pretty. Most of them are crap quality and won't last or work as well at the originals. Besides, you cann't see much of a type 3 engine when it's installed. Just repaint your tinware, or buy used bits if yours are missing/badly damaged and paint them. Spend your money on new parts where it counts, in the engine.

Take all the tinware from your engine and get it acid dipped, which will strip the paint.
Then take it all and get it powdercoated in the color you choose, satin black is best.
I hate seeing new engines with old rusty dirty tinware... make it look new if the engine is.
Should cost around $120-$150 to do all of it, stripped and powdercoated.
