Well the time has come for me to pull my finger out and get some photo's up of my girl. :P As some of you may know she is a 1974 L Bug. i have pulled the 1600 out of her and im currently installing the Subaru EJ22 into her. She has been off the road for a while, but i have made sure i've taken plenty of progress pictures for her baby album.
I rescued her from Billy at Volkwest. He was cleaning up his yard due to selling the business, and i rescued her from going to Sims!
Into the workshop she went, and i started rubbing back her thick layers of paint and cutting out her rust. She had quite a bit of rust on her C pillar, and in order to repair that and not set fire to myself or Mildred in the process, that nasty foam had to be removed.
I bought some aero guards, whale tail and another bonnet for her, so i couldnt wait to get those on there and see how she looked!
I didnt want to put the original mirrors back on there, so i decided to take out the quarter windows, put in a one piece window kit, and do some custom work for the mirrors i chose which required a bit of fabrication...

My radiator which i manged to score out of a 93 Corvette...
Here's my awesone Dad making the removable apron for me and welding up the tail pipe holes... oh yeah, don't worry, that fuel drum was VERY empty! 馃槀
After much primer and rubbing, and also cutting the sun roof hole and installing the louvered apron, she was starting to look more like my little Phat friend!!! It was time for her to make her journey to the beauty parlour! :thumb
The colour i have chosen to paint her is Candy Apple Pink with a Harlequin Glitter Flake through the clear...
Yesterday was the day where she arrived home after much hard work, and i couldn't not be happier! She is beautiful. The paint is so bright and metallic, its really hard to get a good photo as it reflects back onto the camera...

It's taken alot to get her to where she is now. Alot of frustration, blood, sweat and tears! 馃檮 But so worth it!

Nice bit of work and a great colour. You won't lose your bug in a car park that's for sure. Is the sunroof one of those pop up glass jobies? If it is - watch them, as they're prone to leaks.

Cheers Neil, the radiator is a 4 core cross flow out of an early 90's Corvette, so it should be more than sufficient along with the louvered apron.
Yeah, Dad is cutting the apron on the fuel drum, but i can assure you it was bone dry, has never had anything in it! 馃槀 It was given to us during Telstra Rally Australia when we were the refuel crew to just empty the little bits the electric pump doesnt pick up from the other drums when filling up cars. It was a ready made drum and It was one we had spare and is now handy as a stand or cutting platform.

Just came back from the upholsterer. The material i'm using is a black velour and pink metal flake vinyl. I have monza rally seats going in her, which will be black velour, pink metalflake vinyl piping with an embroided VW logo. The doors have a wave pattern with black velour on top and the vinyl on the bottom. It's simple, but really effective, and it will break it up a bit.
Went to the Tyre centre today, and discussed her new shoes. I have to wait 3 weeks for them, as they need to be shipped. But they will definitely look the goods, and add that extra "bling factor"

I just love love love this colour and don't worry about Nail polish or lippy to match, look no further, one of my many talents is that I used to be a Beauty Consultant, (make up and nail technician) so I have both the exact or near enough colour to match this AWESOME beetle.

The commodore wheels are on the back because not only did we do a disc brake conversion, we drilled blank hubs, and changed them to a commodore pattern so i would have more choice in shoes! A girl's gotta have a choice in shoes!!! 馃憤
Still waiting on the hubs for the front, so she just has some daggy calais rims at the moment. She looks like a bit of a bogun! 馃

They are Golf Mirrors, and i acutally bought them off eBay. Installation of the mirrors required alot of customising. The only way i could put them on was by removing the quarter windows and installing one piece windows. The mirrors sit on a steel base plate which was cut to shape and then welded in place. A bit of fiddling, but works a treat!

hm i'll just go with tida, jazz or colt mirrors. they are the type that stick out of the body so you would have much to do to fix em but a bit of fiberglassingi guess. Are they electric?

Hey Adsman, the radiator is in, but the cooling lines havent been fitted just yet. I've moved from Perth to Brisbane, so unfortunately Mildred is still over there getting finished by my father when he has the time (which isnt alot at the moment).馃ゲ So he will be sending me some photos as soon as he can, which i will post up.
The interior and cooling system are next on the agenda. The interior will be decked out with my pop out windows i bought a while back, Sunroof, and Black velour/ pink metal flake vinyl seats and door cards.馃憤
