L-bug front suspension question

Does anyone know if VW ever published the scrub radius dimension for the late-model 2-bolt Beetle front end? I'd like to know this to assist with selection or rim offset

Finding in a workshop manual etc would be far easier than measuring it!!

Hi

I guess the factory sports wheel size would be a good guess. 5.5 inch 26 ET.

So a set of Boxsters 17x7 with 50-ish offset would be a disaster, huh

Joel ·

i used to have some ET38 15x6 momo rims on my bug when i still had the 2 bolt front end
it fit but would have been better with another 5-10mm on that
i had alot of neg camber so they wouldnt scrub the gaurds
once i changed to 3 bolt they were to close to the springs for my liking

Did you go from two to three-bolt...? Why is that?

Lost of neg will alter the scrub radius to some extent, but I'm still keen to find the factory dimension to help me choose width and offset

The calculator on there might be some help with offsets comparisons etc

Hi

Boxster wheels? Going on what Barry (Bizzare) has fitted to his car. 15x6 with ET 36 a 17 x7 Boxster wheel with a ET50 you would have 27 mm less Inner Clearance (the inside of the wheel to the strut housing) & Outer Position (position of the outside edge of the wheel) would retract by 1 mm, might work if you didn't get to greedy with tyre sizes.

With what Joel said about his car, you would have 25 mm less Inner Clearance (the inside of the wheel to the strut housing) & Outer Position (position of the outside edge of the wheel) would extend by 1 mm.

well one reason was my driver side spindle was badly worn from a dodgy bearing i ignored for too long and i couldnt get another 2 bolt spindle for love nor money
ive got 4 3bolt bugs and heaps of parts
not only that tho 2 bolt cant go much lower 3"
ive had my bug down nearly 6" since going 3 bolt
it was nearly as bad as ECbug's super
i could barely get out of my driveway

problem i found is by 30+ years all supers are abit different thro wear, accidents etc
i tried fitting my redrilled discs and momo rims on the front of my Lbug convertble and i couldnt even get it on
tyres hit the springs
but on dub74l i had 3mm clearnce
go figure....

Not worried by strut clearance yet (will be getting custom struts made) - really need to know scrub radius so I know what wheels to get! No, not too greedy with tyres - I reckon a 195 is ample for a VW
