I had an old engine lying here that I wanted to get going again. History/condition unknown. I drained the oil (yuk! It must have been in there for a decade!) and cleaned the screen etc. I did a headtorque and tappets, filled it with fresh oil, checked the timing, hooked up a starter, added some fuel and kicked it into life.

It ran, but not very well. It was obvious the heads were leaking, so I pulled them off to get them recoed/machined.

To my amazement, this is what the ports looked like! has anybody seen anything like this?

Do you reckon RedEx caused it - or it fixes it?

After a few hours of soaking didn't budge the stuff, I hacked into the ports with a hammer and screwdriver/chisel - yes, really - to clean them up. Took around an hour per head!

Hi

I was given a 1300 twin port motor so that I could rebuild it and fit it to my yellow bug when I sold it.

It was as bad as that, maybe worse. What I then found with the motor that casued the problems was that it had about 150 main jet and the manifold pre heaters were corroded so badly that it was sending exhaust gasses down the inlet manifold.
