dvs_vw ·

looks good, like the cooler setups.

what workshop is that, got some pretty serious looking cars, the MK1, and the very nice R100 aswell?!?!?

westi ·

thanks,
the shop is westside mufflers at padstow

mackaymanx ·

I thought the join in the swing axle boot was supposed to be in the horizontal position, the rest looks great.

bond ·

cooling gearbox oil?

nick

westi ·

just finished the gearbox lift.
what do you think.

and it is all going under the shiter

Euro_67 ·

I see your car parked out the front of the shop all the time, nice and low ! Did you own the purple Type 3 wagon that was for sale there a while back ?

westi ·

that was a mates car.we just trashed for a year or two.he had no were to keep it and i needed something to drive.
i had it re-sprayed and re-trimed and returned it to him at the shootout.

pod ·

you have too much time on your hands:Pbut its good to see they are doing good things, cant wait to see it all under your 61👍

66deluxe ·

Very nice, i have welded a plate from the torsion bar to the front gear box mount to strengthen that area and also added a 3 bar kafer cup bar.

BenettonVW ·

Very nice. LOT of work.

Kudos, and respect.

VWFOOL ·

nice work. very nice.:thumb

Craig Torrens ·

why do you need a cooler for the gearbox?

1303Steve ·

Hi Westi

Work must be slow if you have time to work on your car.

By the way thanks for the great work on the intercooler.

Steve

VWCOOL ·

Nice! chassis AND barrel cooler!

VWCOOL ·

mackaymanx wrote:I thought the join in the swing axle boot was supposed to be in the horizontal position, the rest looks great.
they leak less when vertical

Craig Torrens ·

Join should be approx 45deg from vertical.

westi ·

thanks for the tips on the boots, and cheer's for the nice comments.
i should be starting on the brakes and coil overs soon ..

i had a friend help out that doesn't know to much about vw's,and since that is my dumby gearbox i haven't bothered to fix them. i might offend him, then i will have no more slave labour to help me out on those late lonley nights.
as for the gearbox oil cooler, gearbox and diff in one . create alot of heat that is not needed in your engine bay.the bearings and gear's need all the help they can get.
i haven't tried it on a vw as yet ,but i have done alot of these styles of set ups on drift &circut cars and it work's quite well .(lifespan of bearings ,gears etc.etc)

hi steve, you can only work on other peoples projects for so long before you get the shit's.but it pay's the bills so i can't complain to much, nobody listens. good to see it is all coming together for you.next time your out my way can you drop in, i need to pic your brain.

1303Steve ·

Hi Westi

I drove past late last night, saw the lights on but I couldn't stop, by the number of cars there you wouldn't have been lonely.

Steve

westi ·

what do you think old school or pimped

dangerous ·

Nice work Westi!

Spellbound ·

Hi Westi... nice work mate.

I also drove past the other night and saw your slammed dub...very low mate. Nice work.

There was also a VERY hot looking white Beetle parked behind it - a real head turner. Is that yours too?

westi ·

no that's Alison,s car .it has been around for about 10 od years .
they also own a pink type3 wagon
the wheels make the car.

westi ·

here is a few pics of some of the customers cars that keep me and the boy's from working on our own projects.
this is a car that we did for auto salon mag
and some of the boy's welding

i108.photobucket.com/albums/n1/westibug/P3220500.jpgi108.photobucket.com/albums/n1/westibug/PB300317.jpg
and some head work pic,s before they got finished off

westi ·

oop's
i laid to many pic's on top of each other, soory about that.

Dasdubber ·

Wow - nice pics (and work) mate!

Do you guys do all the aluminium (panel) work yourselves inc. bead rolling etc?

Looks awesome!

reub ·

Looks fantastic!

2443TT ·

What happens with the gear shift linkage end of things with the box sitting 2" higher now? I'm keen to see how you tackel that as i'm thinking of doing the same thing to allow a set of 18's under my car...

Cheers,

dangerous ·

If you raise the tranny around 1.25" to 1.5" you can use an early Bus(211) nose cone and keep the shift rod in the tunnel.

frenzix ·

how nice is those welds..

westi ·

yes we do all the tinwork and sheet fab our selves.
here is some work we did today,

i have put this bar in along the outer of the pan for two reasons
one , for strenght
two , for the cage leg's to land on,because the floor is so weak and flex's so badly.

has any one else seen anything like this,it would be nice to here how well is work's.
i will hopefully get started on the suspension next week so i will keep you all posted.
i would also apreciate any imput ,don't be shy.

westi ·

it fit's fine ,i might have to grind a little off some of the bigger welds to make it fit perfect.
but in saying that, it fits now ,so when i put the rubber pan seal in there should be even more clearance

wacked1 ·

man that sure is some good work there, are you the guy who did some of the work on that tubbed matt DC splitty??

westi ·

steve,s black bus .the ute that came in 10 days before the nationals for sum wheel tubs.
what a night mare

but we made it to the nationals, what a head -----.
but we had alot of fun doing it.

wacked1 ·

thats the one,
looks like you know more about vw than some think, excellent work mate.

westi ·

u may be right,who knows

westi ·

anyone got any pics of ladderbar or four link setup's for beetles.
i would like two run coilovers but i am a little stuck for idea's

2443TT ·

Just curious, but is a gearbox oil cooler really needed? Perhaps if you were building a circuit racing car, but its swing axel, ie handling not as good as IRS.

Craig Torrens ·

would your business do sheet metal work on a country buggy resto ??

If so let me know.

Cheers
Craig t

westi ·

a gearbox cooler might be a bit of overkill, and swing axle might not handle as good as IRS,but alot of guy's i know do a bit of circuit racing and it would be so nice to bet some of them with the worst possible set up anyone could ever use.

bond ·

can i ask - how you have raised the gearbox using the machined spacer - what effect does this have on the nose cone and engine height to the body in terms of how the engine tinware will sit etc?

nick

westi ·

yes craig ,can you send me some pic's of what you need done

Craig Torrens ·

will do.................will take some on the weekend, and can drop by the workshop to discuss.

Cheers
Craig T

westi ·

no prob's

westi ·

hi nick,
there are four bolts at the bottom of the nose cone i used these to mount to the plate,i also welded a bar between the two forks and the plate bolts back to that.i have been tring to put up some pic's to show you. but the system keeps crashing so i will try some other time.as for the tineware ,i have changed it in an atempt to make the mods to the fire wall minimal.some sheet work might need to be done, but hopfully not to much.

2443TT ·

Here's another question... 😀

Does the nose cone engine mount completely eliminate wheel hop or does it still require a kaffar style wheel brace to really eliminate the problem?

westi ·

the last car we did like this was an IRS and it didn't have any tramping while doing 1st or 2nd gear burnouts

JVLRacing ·

I like:thumb i like the coolers smart thinking:thumb Westi i want a gearbox brace but standand size not razed $$$$$cost?

vw54 ·

Bard

Keep up the good work

westi ·

jvl do you want a front nose or rear brace.
i have a spare nose brace that you can have .a case of beer should cover costs.

JVLRacing ·

:thumb Rear brace Westi. Is that a made up one like pic? M8 send me a u2u and ill give you a ring deffently need that quailly stuff on my car:thumb

westi ·

i did some more plate work today

westi ·

four link set up

dangerous ·

WOW dude that's pretty serious.
Make sure you only 'tack' it first, 'cause you may only be able to use parrallel 4-link,
or it may bind with swingaxle.
Very nice work!

westi ·

thanks for the advice about the swingaxle, but i welded it all late last night.
luckily i have 100mm travel up or down @ the wheel .
before it binds, the shocks i bought don't have that much travel

JVLRacing ·

greatstuff keep the pics comiing:thumb

Turbo54 ·

Nice welds, Looking great.
T54

westi ·

just finish of the arse end here's some pic's
i hope it works as good as it looks.

i am not real hppy with the shock mounts,so i have only tac welded them for now,has anyone got any pic's of something similar.

JVLRacing ·

:thumbIRS eat your heart out!Westi i wantone of those rear gearbox mounts!PLEASE

koolkarmakombi ·

out of interest why did you go to so much effort and keep the swinger instead of full IRS?

Turbo54 ·

Where do you work?
Is that a Pac Performance R100 in the background?
Nice as work, wish you were in Adelaide.
T54

westi ·

cheers for cool comments guy,s

we work at padstow,westside mufflers.
the r100 belongs to a customer that is sponsored by pac.
we are just down the road from them.
this is the car we built for auto salon, check it out.

Flintstones ·

westi wrote:just finish of the arse end here's some pic's

It's great to see someone else doing things differently.:thumb

Don't know if you've thought about this, (I notice you haven't welded the kafer setup yet) but how do you plan on getting the gearbox out, with that arrangement?
Are you going to pull the axles out every time the gearbox needs to come out?

Cheers

westi ·

i will try to find a standard setup to copy so i can make you a rear brace ,just give me a bit of time because i want to try and get my pan finished.
i just got my sway away axles and front and rear brakes.

i did the front brake coversion on saturday, type 3 hubs, falcon disc's,nissan four spot calipers

westi ·

oh,
i nearly forgot ,yes i will be pulling out the axles every time i need to change the box,i don't realy want it to unbolt,it's just something else that could go wrong.
to koolkarmakombi,i had already ordered my gearbox and wasn't going to do anything to the rear of this one,but i got bored and i had some nice bits just laying around.so i thought why not.

dangerous ·

I tried to post a photo last week but it was so SLOW it never came up.

I used the roll cage back-bars as my point of load on my top shock mount.
You can lean the top of the shock inboard and forward a little with the swingaxle wheel travel.

Once this is done you can down-size the bars going down to the forks, and have them removable and closer to the bell housing.

Just make sure they clear the engine/heads/ exhaust.

dangerous ·

dangerous ·

My bars were NOT removable because the car uses CVs,
but it is simple to flange them(or something a little more refined)

dangerous ·

It was a tight squeeze:

westi ·

thanks for the info and photo's,what a tight sqeeze, you must have a big shoe horn.
what happened to that car?

avwboy ·

love the work man !

thought about dropped spindles tho ?
will fix up those front arm angles a bit and also the angles the tie rods are on

keep the pics comming

westi ·

i am going to be changing the tie rod end to rose joint,so i will play with the steering geometry then.
i am trying to build the car with stuff i have lying around and i am a cheapskate,so dropped spindles are out.for now anyway

wacked1 ·

so in the rear will you be able to fit wide rims?
if so how wide?
cause it looks like you'll be able to go big and the look of a drag car eg tubbed with fat rubber under the rear
cheers

westi ·

without the body on it's a little hard to guess.but 295 maybe 305.
the four link is about 100mm in from where the spring plate was.
it should look pretty fat

dangerous ·

westi wrote:what happened to that car?
crash

http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=47146

westi ·

hope you don,t mind me asking ,but why aren't you fixing it,you would be untouchable in all motor.online wouldn,t have a chance.
they have approx 220 hp in a 600kg car.fast as it is ,the motor doesn't have any more to give.

dangerous ·

I am already close to the minimum weight for VWs at 1750lbs.
Hondas can be 100lbs lighter.

I am still thinking of fixing the car just to be lighter in any class,
but engine development dollars would have to be diverted.

The future holds all sorts of mysteries.

westi ·

do they weigh the cars often,
the only reason i ask is because they have told me personaly that there car weigh's only 600kg's without driver,
i thought that was a bit light but didn't think any more of it.
and the calculation's work out pretty close. for the mile ,weight and gear ratio's.etc .etc
i also hear there might be some rule changes for all motor coming soon.

dangerous ·

If you are trying to set a record, then they will weigh you.
Some tracks will bounce you if you are under,
which is pretty bogus since it is only bracket racing and not "heads up" yet.

I think they would be close to the minimum weight for their car(honda is 1650=750kg...650+ driver?)

But then again, it is NOT their car that holds the national record is it? LOL!

westi ·

to true dave.

like the old school deck lid

JVLRacing ·

Westi,i want of those decklids as well!!!:P are they fibreglass or metal? So my list is Decklid ,Gearbox bracket:thumbthanks

westi ·

there fibreglass ,i don't know what they are worth .this one has gone on to a list of favour,s .
i got him to make it ultra thin, you might want your's to be alittle thicker.

westi ·

it is only an outer skin
the same as i have is $200 cash only
if you want it to bolt on like standard it is around $250

reub ·

Nice decklid indeed...so those prices are for all of us interested?

westi ·

yes ,those prices are for anyone interested,if anyone wants one i will u2u his number.

westi ·

my gearbox arrived y'day.here r some pic's.
has any one ever bought a gearbox from rancho performance before,if so what was it like.

question time?
has any one stuffed around with collector lengths or how thet merge,i make alot for customers ,but you don't want use them as test pig's,so i usually just make the norm.
but for myself i thought i might try something a little different.i copied a set of F1 style collectors .any info would be great.
i am going to make a few different styles and see which one works best with my combo.any pic's u have would be nice.

Turbo54 ·

Hey Westi,
This is how I set mine up, Collector look the same as your inside, Not same runner lengths but I wanted a clean look over spagetti!
T54

westi ·

in the case of a turbo equal length's don't make any difference any way.the quickest path is the best path, unless you are using a split pulse turbo housing.
who did your pipes, give them a pat on the back for a job well done.did you perge weld them.

Turbo54 ·

Yeah purged, they are boiler pipe and really thick but we found they moved around a lot when they wee heated. We even got some peices to move by just adding water when really hot. Incredible stuff. Yeah he did a really good job. www.aseturbo.com did some of the pipe work and a friend and myself finished it off.
T54

westi ·

great stuff.
with the steam pipe i usually won't tak any more than 3 pieces at a time because they tend to pull quite a bit.
nice polish job on the pipes.that takes just as much time to do as making it.
i look forward to seeing more on your build, keep the pic's coming.

westi ·

i am trying to save weight with anything that i do so i put some speed holes in the gearbox side cover,i am just waiting for my engine shit to come back from the machine shop ,i will post up some pics soon.

dangerous ·

Cool speed holes!

Talking about collectors and such, I recently got a program from the US to calculate pipe size and length.

It gives a lot of info on primary AND collector length(n/a) but it seems design of shape,
is less important than length.

The program guy said that the spiffy style like you gave done keeps up the speed(perfest for turbo),
and increases low speed torque, and gives it a wider spread of torque.

Are you boosted? And what primary size will you choose?

What do you use to cut the pieces up for the collector before welding Westi?

westi ·

when i got my heads flowed ,1 3/4 produced the best flow for the exhaust ,so i have started with that size in mind.n/a all the way.but in saying that it realy depends on the power out put and how keen i am to go fast.
as for the cutting of collectors,i can't give away all the tricks of the trade.
just kidding.
all you need is a square bit of rhs with a hole cut in one of the corners.it is hard to explain,i am going to make a set of collectors later today,so i will take some pic's for u

dangerous ·

westi wrote:as for the cutting of collectors,i can't give away all the tricks of the trade.

Thanks dude, that would be good, you're a hell-guy.

westi ·

here is a few pic's of one of the ways that you can skin a cat(cougar)

start with some bent steel 10 to 15 degree's

ad one jig

rotate pipe till warm

lock into position.

use your depth gauge reader to insure that you do them all the same.

use thin felt ink applicator to mark a cut line

now you are ready to use the high speed spark thrower to seperate the unwanted material.

re insert wanted material into the jig that we had prepared earlier.

count your fingers before starting the even higher speed metal straightner

after completing step one, repeat 3 more times

now you are ready to use the slow speed multi tooth de buring tool.

if every thing has worked to plan this is what it should look like,so far.

finally we are ready for launch .place the pipes together ,and

we have a small rocket ready for take off.

Dasdubber ·

Thanks for sharing the pics mate - I am a sponge for the "how to" details!

westi ·

if i get a chance me and the boy's were saying if we remember that we would try to do a how to each week.

nbturbo ·

Now that is really clever-would never have been able to figure out how to make the jig-well done.Like the text with each pic as well.

westi ·

i was trying to make it interesting for all.
i think i might start a fun' how to' guide

reub ·

Great pics....and great to see the process...thanks for sharing mate. :thumb

dangerous ·

Nice work Westi.
Thanks so much for sharing!

westi ·

question time for dave, whats the most cfm that you have seen an 044 produce.with a 42 in 38 out

Turbo54 ·

Man they fit together well, Mine weren't so good and needed a lot of filing and grinding after welding. Thanks for the guide, now I will knw for the next one. Do you start by welding the whole collector up and then work backwards? We did mine the other way and struggled to get the last weld in the collector. As I wanted it polished we welding it all up only taking the collector, then split it all apart and had it polished and then welded the collector.T54

westi ·

they are n/a collectors, slip joint.so they are realy easy to weld.
i do my turbo collectors a little different if they have to be welded.
i will see if i have any pic's.

dangerous ·

westi wrote:question time for dave, whats the most cfm that you have seen an 044 produce.with a 42 in 38 out
Ooh, thats testing my memory!

Most stuff we flow tested with the manifold at least, and usually with the carb also.

I would have to guesss around 125cfm@10" @.600" lift
this is equal to...oh crap wheres my calulator with square roots!? Canaea find him!

To get it at 25", multiply by the square root of 25/10.

Same deal with 28".....multiply by the square root of 28/10 (28 divided by 10, square root the answer)

Flow at 25" is closest to possible HP if optimised, (I am miles off!)
Roger Crawford recently made 310 with 305cfm@25"
I am flowing about 280 to 290 on my two different combos.(making less than 230 (so far!))

westi ·

that's cool ,thank's.
i ruffed my head's out to what i thought might work.

i gave the heads to Pat Purcell to test ,and asked to see if he could get any more out of them.
we got 210 cfm @600 is that ok.

kroozzn63 ·

i think i drove past your workshop is it near bryant st / fairford rd ? your work is insane keep up the pics when wil she be finished
?

westi ·

hopefully she we be finished for warwick.
hopefully we will have done some testing before then.

westi ·

you thought right, were on the corner at the light's.

dangerous ·

westi wrote:i gave the heads to Pat Purcell to test ,and asked to see if he could get any more out of them.

That is very good.
Even if flowed at 28" pressure drop.
I think that is around what Rod Richardsons heads flow(depending on if 25" or 28")
Although his were flowed with manifolds and carbs.

westi ·

mine were flowed at 25" with manifold's and carbys also
how did you go on the weekend, all was good i hope.

westi ·

hi all,
i got of my arse on saturday and did some more work ,the only problem was that the downer car that i took the brakes off needed them replaced .so i was in at work until 2 am sunday doing brake conversions, but i must admit that is nice to spend other people's money for them.
anyhow ,here's some pic's.
it was good te see everyone in queensland had fun @ the drags, except for fat macca and morg's.

this is the brakes for the downer car,

now for the shitter, feels good to get her back on all four's

pretty cool .it looks pretty tuf, lets hope it all works well.
fingers crossed

dangerous ·

Sounds like a pretty damn good set of heads you have there Westi !

Yes we all had a good week end.
Poor old Macca and Morgie are down a little, but they are very Keen and will be back on top in no time!

Turbo54 ·

Westi, what are those brakes? I am looking at the brake situation for my car and am not sure what to do. IRS back, BJ Front. any ideas? T54

westi ·

the brakes on my car are of a 200sx,i had them laying around.
brakes are like a good engine set up ,what do want from your them ,race, street.
one of the reasons that i have chosen these brakes rather than a full custom set up is money, the other is praticality,if i ever have a problem with any of the parts they are of the shelf and easy to source.
front disc's are falcon $100 each,the rear are 200 sx s 14 $80 each,caliper's are all 200 sx s 14 $300 the lot.

the set up on my car will pull a 1450kg car up quiet well ,so it should be awsome on an 800kg car.
tell me roughly how much you had in mind as a budget ,what the car weight is,wheel size and main use for the car,and i can tell you which parts you need to buy, then all you need is a local machine shop ,and your in business.

2443TT ·

Good idea, and for interest sake you could upgrade to R32 GTST or GTR rear brakes easily too if you want more rear end braking. These are direct bolt ons for the S14 200sx. Cheap too because a lot of rice burner owners upgrade to better brakes and can't offload their old parts.

PHAT BUG ·

That looks insane, cant wait to see a body on it!

Turbo54 ·

Any Updates Westi?
Love to know how hose brakes are going,
T54

westi ·

yes for the updates ,i have been pretty busy,i will take some photo's tonight

westi ·

i have been pretty busy doing all the litte nic nacs, finishing of brake lines, battery brackets ,etc, etc.
and the car can't be complete without more speed holes.

i had to remount the oil cooler the 4 link got in the way,so the next size down was fitted,no duct on this one yet.

i will take some more pic's on wednesday and we will hold a competition to see if anyone can count all the speed hole's.i Know i have lost count,

dangerous ·

That is lookin' pretty damn good Westi.
What is inside the tranny for strength and ratios?

Dasdubber ·

Looks great westi - any chance you could give some info re. the line lock (ie. what brand etc?)

Also, is that just a fuel pump (?carter) you are using for your trans fluid to cooler, or is it a pump designed specifically for oil?

Cheers
Alan

westi ·

as for the tranny ,i ordered a pro sand from rancho, but i was given a pro street by mistake,so it won't be to long before i will be sending a gearbox to you dave ,what's it worth $.

yeh it is just a carter ,no mod's.they seam to work ok .rocket have actually just brought out a walbro that does the same thing.it is a 5 r racing product.
the line locker is another rocket item,i bought it to go with the tree step for the MSD.
part No.bm46076 $94.49

Hi Westi,
gearboxes are just a hobby for me,
but I would be happy to help when the time comes.

The interesting ones still get my juices flowing with interest.

Choosing the right ratios for a particular combo can make a volksy quite a pleasure to drive,
especially when the ratio options are so many now a days.

This is just a great thread! Thanks for taking the time to take pics and share it with us mate. Fantastic and cant wait to see more- Wayne

westi ·

no more photo's until the motor is ready.
it is all at the machine shop,so the body swap is on hold for a little while.
as soon as i have something worthy of a photo i will let you know.
i will proberly do some photo's as i assemble the donk.

westi ·

i managed to track down some titanium for my exhaust,so i thought i would show you how time consuming it is.
it takes about 5 - 15 minutes per cut and linish each piece, then you need to make sure it all lines up ok.

it took me about 5-6 hours to make 2 bends.4 more still to go.

kroozzn63 ·

That is art man ,sweet as

Euro_67 ·

How are you welding this ? This stuff is light strong and really hard. It is a popular metal in jewellery and glasses frames these days.

Here is a neat trick :
Take a scrap piece and polish to a high shine, and then gently oxidise it (heat it with your oxy torch using an oxygen rich flame). It will start out going straw colour, then through to orange, red, violet then an amazing bluish purple. Its an old Jeweller technique.

Flintstones ·

What's the go with the Titanium?

It's taken you such a long time to make these bends, just woundering what the real benefit is, when you could have gotten Stainless mandrels....

Cheers

Stainless is a lot heavier - thats my guess.

Hi Dino

Its probably like what Sir Edmund Hilary said when they asked him why he climbed Mount Evertest "because it was there"

Steve

westi ·

thanks for that steve.
it's because i can
stainless systems are heavy, around 10 -15 kg's heavier than titanium.
i will be running one ressy and one ofset centre and approx 1.5 metre's of bend and pipe.and guess what it is still lighter than one phat boy muffler.
how cool is that.

reub ·

I concur....my stainless system including the custom muffler weighs in at around 6kgs and is pretty short in length....

Flintstones ·

That's cool, just understanding your motivation.
Cheers

westi ·

i am still trying to track down 1 3/4 titanium tube for the extractors.
imagine how much time i could waste if i was to do that, thankfully i haven't been able to find any.so i might be able to get the car finished some time this year.ha ha ha.
cheer's for the feed back.

westi ·

there hasn't been much work done on the shiter lately, but i did put her on the scales to see how fat she is.

it came in at 774kg's,complete with full interior stereo, amps the works, full tank of gas aswell.

so we thought we would check out the pan's weight so far.

came in at 360 kg's.each wheel came in at 22 kg's each,
84 kg's of bling, what a waste.they will most definatly have to go for when racing.

the target weight is 600 kg's with driver?
is this possible,or am i nut's

westi ·

spider man did this one

although it looks ugly,it sounded tough as nails.girly finger nails

kroozzn63 ·

hmmm yummo

speedster356 ·

Hmmm, corner scales......can I book the Spyder in for some corner weighting? :kiss

westi ·

next time i have them i will send out an invite.

VWFREAK ·

That system looks sweet. She'd have a nice growl now

pete wood ·

way too much pipe. :P

BTW, how does he get the oil filter on and off? :duh

westi ·

easy ,that pic doesn't do it justice, there is enough room to sqeeze it out.it's tight .

westi ·

just waiting for the pic's to download ,they should be up soon.

westi ·

after we had finished putting the guards on,we started on the wiring,

a little hint for when you have a car that is 40mm of the ground, assume you have done the wiring right and look else were for the problem of your brake lights not working.it might just be that you have taken out the wiring on the master after running down small animals.proceed with caution.

i will take some pic's we i get her back on the ground.

dangerous ·

Can I ask where you got that new rear apron from Westi?

westi ·

its a steel skin .not glass.

dangerous ·

yes that is cool and how much?

westi ·

i got it from vintage ,of memory it cost me around 100 bucks,i love cuting up perfectly good panels .

any one heard the one about the guy that finished fitting all his fibreglass panels @ 3 am and he stripped 4 out of 5 wheel nuts while putting the wheel on.The same guy thought to him self, if i drive home real slowly it will be fine, only to forget all about it and drag raced a fellow worker mate. He was winning until for no apparent reason he remembered why he should have been driving slowly. The other clue was that after pulling seconds, the rear wheel decided to move around on the 1 remaining bolt that was holding it on. No point in stoppping now. Might as well drive until the rear wheel refuses to turn (approximately 300 metres from work). As luck would have it, the guy he was drag racing was behind him (because he was losing) and decided that it would be safer to lose as opposed to having to dodge a rear wheel that could stray across the road. The loser was then forced to drive this guy home, no dought having to listen to how he lost to a 3 wheeled shitter. If this is not enough, the workmate was the one who went & did a roadside repair the next day so that they could race again that evening.

it wouldnt be one guy in a race car looking toyota, would it???

we were both driving 5hp shitters.
pathfinder Vs vw beetle

westi ·

does any one know if you can put these straight onto vw spindles,if so what bearings i need to use.

westi ·

oops.

it must be getting lighter ,i got out the driveway on my own ,i had to spin the wheels alittle to do it but it made it.
i usually need a couple of blokes to give her a lift.

speaking of hooking ,i hooked in that hard i took out the wiring loom
i guess i am lucky we had made a new one for when we do the pan swap.
dash is done ,all metal.
i will take some more pic,s tomorrow when i put all the new gauges in.

westi ·

here are a few pic's,it has been a long night but i think it was worth it.

i have done heaps ,when i finish tonight i will post some more pic's

Westi is the boss, till he goes home😂🤪

westi ·

just because you get bashed up by ya misses.doesn't mean everyone elses does the same.

westi ·

ok. the wiring i am not to sure of, yes it is a three step to a 6al box.the wiring guru(beau) has told me that he knows how to do it.
i should be firing her up on saturday and testing to make sure it all works.
so i will post up some more pic's if i get a chance.
i will get beau to do a drawing of the wiring for you if you don't already have one.

koolkarmakombi ·

So what motor goes in this beasty Westi?

westi ·

were do i start.
ali case
84mm crank
5.5'rods
cam is a tester, has around 553 lift at valve
044's 42x37.5 flowed 225 cfm,around 14:1 comp
48's
msd
hopfully i get the parts back from the machine shop this weekend,so i will post up some pic's of the build up if i have finished the pan.
i have made a trial set of extractors for the street and i will be making a few more sets to get the best combo i can for the track.
i have been pretty busy doing all the little od's and sod's of a pan swap,so hopfully i will be finished for the weekend.

more pic's to come.

555bug ·

hmmm 14:1 whats is going to be drinking?

koolkarmakombi ·

🤪!

westi ·

after many long hours slave labour,it is finished for now.
everything was going well until the first trip up the street at 2.30am,while testing the limiter and gearbox all at the same time if you get were i am going with this, stupid things like this can only leed to heartbrake, luckily it was only the voltage reg.
anyhow here are some pic's.
go the pressure pack black.

i had five minutes of fun,so that's all that count's.
i hope you enjoy the pic's

Awesome marathon effort Westi, and top work!
How does the exhaust work?
Good air/fuel ratio?
Gotta be the only singleport around with MSD!

555bug ·

looks hard :duh and I guess it should at $10/L 😉

hey are you running aeros up front?

well done I wish I had your focus

VWFREAK ·

Where did you get the engine lid from, I've been looking around with no luck.

westi ·

a/f is good, the msd cleared up the rev range,it rev's nice for a 1300,so nice that we were spinning both 19's hard last night,it was raining though.
as for the extractors it rev's clean and sounds tough for a stocky,we were abit razzled by how good it is.
did anyone notice those lovely custom badges on the side, nice touch from the work temp (school kid on holidays)
i will try to put up some more pic's tonight,it's alway's the way when you want to work on your own car,not enough hours in a day.

westi ·

hers is the wiring guy,i think there might be a srew lose

not bad for a few night's work, after all it is only the shitter

i wil try to post some video's of it running on the 3 step,it sounds cool.as cool as a stock 1300 can anyway

westi ·

yeh they are aero's up front and i have no idea what they are at the back.
as for the rear deck lid i think they go for around the 2 to 250 mark i am not 100%,if you want i can u2u his number to you.
so far the paint job has cost me about 80 bucks ,that includes,$10 for bog ,$32 for paint ,$6 for dropsheets,$12 for sand paper, $20 for lunch for the boy's doing the work.

the look on everyones face that asked if it was the same bettle they have seen parked out the front of the shop every day for the past year, and the fact it was only painted in pressure back.

PRICELESS

westi ·

here are some pic's of the top notch paint resto.

vw54 ·

Brad

I hope you didnt get cigarette ash on the wet paint

would spoil it LOL :blah:blah:blah:blah

westi ·

yeh those fastners keep the whole car together,
as for the cigarette ash ,the word on the street is that it is cheaper than pearl and doesn't need to have a clear coat added after.
i think it the little touch's of cigarette ash, sorry i mean white pearl are what realy makes a shitter complete.lol.

boristherat ·

Two words......Shit Yeah!

westi ·

some more pic's of the little things,

this start button is worth more than the entire paint job,$120

👍 i havent been on here for ages and just stumbled across this post and i gotta say i love the work you have put into this bug it truly is a mad looking car well done, even if it is just a shitter i love it!!!

westi ·

cheer's.
i have put the post's on hold while i am waiting for engine parts.
while putting the motor together we hit a snag,i need longer barrels,i thought i might need longer barrels before we started, but me being stupid didn't think they would be that hard to track down, famous last words.lol.
hopefully i will post up some more pic's soon.i am at the mercy of UPS.

66deluxe ·

Westi, we can't have that engine not built mate, here you go http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=208205

Good luck mate. Damo.

westi ·

i was kinda hoping someone in oz had some,i ordered some from aircooled .net.

westi ·

most i my engine stuff has arrived,so we might still have time to get it all together for warwick.
there has been a small delay with the 48's.the machinist fucked up bad.he caught an edge while milling them out to 51's,story of my life.
i will post up some pic's on the weekend of the engine build if i get a chance, fingers crossed.

J&SBlue ·

Do you know what the front seats are out of ? or what they are ?

westi ·

the seats and frame are from scat ,they are about ten years old,but they still rock.i took them out of the wifes old car.

westi ·

work has started again, new plates for the car have arrived, fibre glass front end is ready,so the fun and games start again.
warwick is still the goal, but i am still in need of a few engine goodies, they will be the deciding factor.

tomorrow i will make the fuel tank, and the tilt supports for the front end.

555bug ·

man I coming to Warwick just to see this 🙂

stephen

westi ·

we managed to get some more done over this weekend, hope you like it.

[ Edited on 9-9-2007 by westi ]

That tilt front support is fantastic, as is the new fuel cell setup.

Gets me motivated to get to and modify my tilt front support and my new radiator setup.

Great work mate...

westi ·

thanks for the nice comment's reub.
how does you front end work, got any pic's.

Dasdubber ·

Looking great westi - can't wait to hopefully see it at warwick, and have a chat with you and all the others off the forum whom I've never met before!

Good luck with the remainder of the project.
Alan

westi ·

thanks,i look forward to putting faces and names together.hopefully everything will get here in time so that i can go,

reub ·

Here is a couple of pics...one when I was building the new 3" narrowed beam.

The tilt front frame will be modified to suit a 300 high aluminium radiator that tilts forwards with twin thermos on the rear. Additional shrouding will be introduced as well (not to mention a 'real' overflow bottle...)

westi ·

that looks pretty cool, who is making all your new stuff.

reub ·

Have a mate up here that does nice fabrication stuff as long as I'm not in a hurry. He helped with a number of items on vwrx. Lays sweet tig welds....

westi ·

nice,it's pretty hard to find good welders.the only reason i asked the question is because PWR will make any thing even if you only send them a drawing, and they give warranty for everything that they make.

063bug ·

nice work on the car Westi, it's taken me a while to find this thread but just enjoyed the ride so far.... keep up the top work.

Yeah, was thinking PWR - much like my intercooler...even if i just buy the core from them and have my mate make the tanks, support brakets and radiator mounts.

Will doing the old cardboard mockup for the new radiator and stuff....will have to start my own post to keep you updated.

Thanks again too for keeping us all updated with your build. We're always up for some volksporn :thumb

westi ·

there is not enough hours left for me to get it all done.so sadly the car will not be going,
but if i do get some more work done i will post up some pic's.

eraser ·

You built the tilt beam yourself for the front end?
If so awesome job may need to talk about getting one made up for myself :P Very nice work, any chance you could let me in on how your securing the bonnet to the top of the body so it doesnt open.

dangerous ·

What is the latest Westi?

westi ·

i will try posting some pic's tonight.

westi ·

just a few pic's ,it has been awhile.the fibre glasser has been alittle slack.

westi ·

i am interested to hear some peoples thoughts on this.

i had to make the original in steel ,before we made a mould .that was fun.
i should be putting it all in the car during the x-mas break so i will keep you all posted.

MISS VDUB ·

You dont have to ask me twice... love it!

Ash x

reub ·

Think I've seen one pic of it done before.
Interested to hear how it goes. 👍 Thanks for the update...

555bug ·

I've got loads of photos with this style of cooling using a Porsche fan but never electric, nice concept less drag hopefully similar cooling 🙂 get Wes to rin the numbers for you

kroozzn63 ·

not pink please its so eighties .
gloss black ,maybe some pinstriping or metal flake .. not been done yet to my knowledge, very retro too and man i got some wheels for you 4 stud too

LUFTMEISTER ·

whats the air flow rate of electric vs factory? looks the goods though.

westi ·

the electric fan produces 1000 cfm,
the books tell me 18 to 20 cubic feet per second on a standard pull size which would be around 15 to 18 with a power pulley.@3300 to 4000 rpm.
so standard or modified would be ruffly 1200cfm to 900cfm.
i have 1000cfm on the engine and another 650cfm on the cooler.so hopefully it should be more than enough.
i will be doing two tests at the same time.
i have someone trying the same set up on a stock 1600 with twin carbs.
it should be a good tester anyway.
i have heard so much about this but no one has actually showed what they tried,so i thought i would give it a go.

VWFREAK ·

Nice one Westi, I think alot of people may be interested in the concept if the trial is succesful. Sounds great in theory, good luck and keep us posted on the results.

LUFTMEISTER ·

would be a good set up if you you can control the heat issues. all the extra room for a turbo and fuel injection setup👍

westi ·

here's a pic of the new oil filter mount, everything has to match with pink

reub ·

Mate...that's purdy...and looks expensive 😁

So...how about dropping the dizzy as well and going a different route for ignition triggering?

westi ·

i was goig to go MSD distributorless.but i had already bought the 6al
and yes the filter cost me my first bourne ,but it is re-usable,so i don't have to buy one ever again.

Dero ·

Westi very nice stuff! 😀

Is the fan going to be always on? Or I guess I am assuming you will be hooking it up to a themostat... Also on a side note, ie extended period driving the fan would eventually come would the drain on the battery be to much? The reason I ask is I guess there aint much airflow through there while driving ie like a front mount radiator in a normal car... hope this makes sense...

But I like the work good stuff!! 👍

Cheers

Joel

westi ·

just some updates, new alternater mount and carbs mounted

VWFREAK ·

Nice, hope she run as good as she looks. Love ya work.

kroozzn63 ·

man hope it works a treat ,if you create this space with this set up ,as said above, the space gained would open up so many options ,super chargers etc etc cant wait to see if it turns good...in the cooling dept ... still dont like pink though.. but who cares ..

reub ·

Mate....we all like pink bits......😂

Nice work Brad! 👍

westi ·

cheers for the comment's
i am not over the moon about the pink ,but it won't take much to fix that.
i have put on some more goodies today,i will try to get some time to post the pic's.

westi ·

dangerous ·

What alternator is that Westi?

westi ·

hey i believe it's a falcon my mate got it for me it's a high current one to keep everything juiced up

punchbuggyracer ·

That's great I love it. The best part is 1000cfm at an idle! and no loss of power driving the actual fan blade.

As a side note I think the Porsche fan kit is about 25cfs which is about 1500cfm, apparently this is to much and at high continuous revs, it drops the engine temp out of operating range.

These going to be for sale Westi? maybe type 4?

555bug ·

amazing work, best of all it all left field stuff. I hope to see it in the flesh one day 🙂

westi ·

yeh i supose i could sell some.let me be the gynea pig first .

westi ·

as per usuall everything needs to be custom fit,so the process of putting the engine together and then into the car is always slow, with alitle luck the teething problem's will be minor and it should be running tonight.
i still have heaps to go,although it looks complete ,so i can see that the end is near.
enjoy.

bond ·

some cool different ideas there! well done mate.

nick

dangerous ·

That's not "All Motor"!!

Nice work westi.

looks shit hot mate...

great to chat briefly last night too👍

keep up the top work

matberry ·

Great work Westi. Interested to see this cooling work!
Are you going to lower it next?

Matt

Dero ·

I guess this setup also could open a few more option for supercharging..................................................................... with the boot lid down!! 🤪

Hooray 😂

1303Steve ·

Hi

Great work.

I'm very lucky, I don't live far from Westys shop. I often pop in and this guys fabrication skills are amazing. He's done a little job on my intercooler so far and I plan on taking him more stuff in the future.

Steve

westi ·

all throttle no bottle hey dave.just wanted to have a little extra something to keep me happy.
hey reub ,i watched all the vid's.took forever but they were all pretty cool.i think you need a different box in whitty.the ratio's seem a bit tall.

story so far
everything together friday night engines first start 10.30 pm,yipy😵. engine stops 10.35 literally.
🙁
1.00 am same night the engine is dissasembled to see problem.f--kin pulley.i always cheak the ali pulley's to make sure there is enough clearance, but for some stupid reason i didn't this time.
1.am engine has been cleaned(from shaving's)re-assembled and checked thrice and re started.🙂
it sounds tuf as nails, can't wait for the first drive.
so far so good with the cooling ,i have had it running on and off for about 40minute trying to chase idle mixtures.it's getting to late and my head isn't working properly,so i will finsih jetting tommorrow.

cheer's for the input and comments over the thread so far.
i will try to take some footage of it's first trip ,and i will post up some more pic's as soon as i can.

westi ·

fullnoise ·

Great post! I just finished reading it from start to finish.

The electric cooling fan is neat. I hope it works. It would give you more room for a super charger!

Is the compression ratio still 14:1?

Good luck with the first drive of the new donk. You should hose off the Pathfinder now (Pending more than one serviceable wheel nut on each wheel).

CT

kroozzn63 ·

,looks funkin awesome, love to here it on , youtube...

063bug ·

the threads a credit to you Westi and the work on the car and engine is something to behold.... really interested to see how it performs. Maybe when it's all done and dusted you could post a specification sheet with all the details of the car. Anyway, you've done an awesome job. Congrats 👍

westi ·

yeh i can do that,
it may need to be it's own post though,i started trying to explain all the mod's to shannon's (insurance).
he sayed that i would need to have a certain amount of mod's to qualify for insurance, and then asked me to start at the front of the car and work my way to the back.
he then asked me to stop and i was only getting to the dash as he only had so much room to write all the mods in.lol

westi ·

nah it's only 11.2 : 1
we decided not to go to high, because we have done so many things different to the norm,we didn't want it to get to complecated

westi ·

because everything hangs out alittle ,i thought it might be best to cover them up,so i fibreclassed some of the wifes tuperware containers and here are the results sofar.

matberry ·

Ahh the itchi dust
Welcome to fiberglass Westi

VWFREAK ·

Crazy, she's a credit to you and an inspiration to others. Great to see some more reworked ideas.

westi ·

thanks guy's
it goes great, but the mixtures are way out.idle is 11.1a/f
mid is 11.1 and i am not gam to rev it just yet,it's raining.it was its first real drive tonight,i had sticky throttle issues the other night.
idles' are 55's with a 120
mains are 180 with 200
f11's
44 venturis
the fine tunning will take aliitle longer than first thought.
i will keep you posted

oh and you can clean all your brushes and gear in very hot water with omo,
works great and is heaps cheaper than acetone

westi ·

thanks for the tips,
but they came alittle to late

555bug ·

so how long till the videos are done? really interested to hear this bad boy 🙂

May end up with a slightly larger idle jet than that, unless you have the extra progression hole.
Perhaps a slightly smaller Air jet too, but atleast you have A/F ratio to tell you what is going on 'up high'.
No guessing there! It will tell you the truth.

westi ·

i turned the fuel psi down to 3.5psi
warmed it up for 20mins(oil temp140 f)
135 mains 200airs
45 idles and it is now 12.9 to 13.2 to 1
still burninig the eye's though.
the oil cooler fan doesn't turn on until 80c,what's that in f

westi ·

plug gap should be ?

matberry ·

On a GOOD system I run 1.2 mm

matberry ·

Just noticed f11
Have you any f7's?

westi ·

i have f7's and i am getting some new plugs today i will try 1.2mm

westi ·

sounds tuf.

11CAB ·

Anyone else notice the cop car out on the main street?!?! 😂😂

westi ·

oops

Flintstones ·

have you had a visit as yet? 😂😂😂

westi ·

nah ,it's all good.
so far

reub ·

hahahaha....yeah,saw the cop on the second view.😁
Sounds great. Look foward to a bis skid and some motion footage too.
Top work dude👍

matberry ·

Woo Hoo !!!👍

Sounds great!

Where did the jetting end up?

westi ·

45idles
160 mains f11 180 airs
it keeps fouling plugs, but it's ok for now.i wanted to get some driving in before the dyno.
we finished fitting all the linelocker and nos electrics on the weekend,so i have some cool buttons on the old school steering wheel.one for burnout, one for launch and one for nos.
i will put up some more pic's up soon.

westi ·

the first one was good old fashoin heel and toe,
this one is with the line locker set up and beau having a go

westi ·

the only thing better than second gear burnouts is third gear burnout's,but thats the next video.

dangerous ·

Lets see some racing!
WSID tomorrow night?

westi ·

dyno first.
then straight out for a good snoting.

56astro ·

How'd the dyno runs go??

westi ·

still going.
i haven't rang him and he hasn't rang me.
i dont know if that is a good sign or not.
i will just have to wait and see

westi ·

this is one of the first power runs 156rwhp.it made just over 160 hp at 5500rpm but head the head temps have been aliitle to hot so heaps of timing has been pulled out .i have had all the cooling tins out from under the barrels and heads in an attempt to get the oil temps up.the exhaust has 1.5 metre primaries for the street so it was dynoed as is.i will be changing the extractors and putting some cooling tins in to see what diferences it makes.
jets ended up at 70 idles
180main 150 air f7's. 44 mm vent's

it was dynoed in third because the guy doesn't like dynoing over 220,he doesn't like to over speed the dyno, does this sound right. i might have to get rid of the nineteens for the dyno next time.

not great but not bad so far anyway.

dangerous ·

Nice smooth curve,
must have that A/F ratio pretty consistent,
no dips or bumps.

I have only dynoed in 4th gear,
but it is probably close to a stock 3rd ratio anyhow.

How does it drive arond now with that jetting?

2443TT ·

Depends on your ratios but also it sounds like the dyno operator is a little soft. What was the top speed at the rear wheels at redline?

At the last dyno day up here in Cairns with all the imports and blown v8's they always run them in 4th if they are a manual. 3rd would mean too much torque to the rear tyres and the just wheel spin on the dyno. Some were spining in 4th anyway. 4th gear at 8000 rpm in a skyline is about 220km/h or so, which was done with an import running a 3lt hybrid and 32lb boost - 625rwhp. That would definatly not get traction in 3rd.

1303Steve ·

Hi Westy

I see you had it dynoed at an old VW legends place. I work with his son Peter.

Steve

Craig Torrens ·

so did you try the nos on the dyno ?

westi ·

no nos on the dyno, not yet.
i will get the head temps sorted and then go again,i also want to make a set of race headers,i have a few ideads i want to try.
as for the redline, the dyno guy said it was well past 220 and was still reving, maybe he was to confident with the car ,and you have to remember i have 19's not 15's.the tyre is 24.5 to 25 diametre.but in saying that, you might be right maybe he has no ticker.
as for how she drives it was alittle hard to feel,it's been raining and it doesn't get alot of grip ,but it does sound nice in top gear reving it friging head off.it is very snappy.
if it's good weather next week i might take some footage ,i will keep you all posted.
i only have a 50 shot of nos in at the moment,it sounds realy angry when you hit the go button

Craig Torrens ·

geez this should scream down the quarter !

westi ·

we will soon see.
i will proberly take it out pretty soon.street tyres first.see how the box goes.maybe wed.
see how work is

Golde60 ·

can anyone give me an idea of what that might equate to at the flywheel?

I have been told once before that about 30% is lost in the trans......

it all starts again, why oh why do we do this to ourselves.

the way it was,and never to be again.what do we have install for it,not idea yet.but it is coming apart.

the interior is next.

after seeing peter's car in the flesh i realy want to make it light.maybe with a touch of pretty.

i will be doing heaps of little things on sat ,so i will try to put up some pic's as i go.

Look forward to continued pics dude.

...and yes, having seen Pete's car in the flesh just before chrissie last year I know what you mean. His can is truely a sweet race car 👍

mactaylor ·

hey westi you could nearly make the 4 bar setup as a bolt in, like a triangulated kafer cup bar with benifits!! maybe with mid mounts and rollbar mounts

reub ·

also....that's that bug in the background??

London Bugger ·

WOW totally blown away buy your talent and JUNKA, I picked up a pic of your engine bay in the portland thread and a fellow member sent me over here! Just finished reading the thread well worth staying up till 3am here in the UK!

Have you put in many street miles with the cooling setup you have? I ask because I was planning a horizontal fan setup on my Turbo motor for space, was looking at modifying the Type 4/Porsche setup to run on my type 1 based case, but was told that they often throw belts which put me off. Last thing I want is to see all my money go up in smoke! Looks like your setup could be the answer? At idle does the engine not suffer from over cooling?

Thnaks,
Rob.

westi ·

been busy,and still going.enjoy

westi ·

yeh yor write i proberly could make it bolt in,but i like to weld,no chance of movement or twist.
thanks for the nice comment's rob,at idle it takes about 20minutes to warm up the oil.i start driving after about five and nurse it for about five before i kill it.
as for miles on the motor it has three days' on a dyno with a dicky operator that was dynoing with a manifold leak and the highest the head temp on that side got up to 180.it has only done about a thousand k's sofar but we have only realy been doing city driving, once the gearbox is fixed we are going to start doing some freeway testing.
as soon as we have done that there will be some testing done on a few different engine comb's and then release a kit.that way we can telll people what to expect from engine temps .
and yes rueby that's the other thing we have been working on,i posted it just for you.
enjoy.
once i get my other fibre glass door i will fit them up to show you guy's,there unreal ,superlight.
next stop gearbox ,we cleaned some up on saturday ready to ship to the man(dave).can't wait to see what he comes up with.
then while that is getting done i am going to send the car of to get some paint, maybe some cool graphics.who knows.then maybe a new license plate .
i will keep you all posted.

westi ·

fibre glass door

London Bugger ·

Great stuff westi, I will be watching closely from now on, my projects a long way off but if all goes well with your fan setup put me down for one!

Do you plan to do any testing with the setup on a turbo motor?

i am not going that crazy just yet.
i am just cleaning it up abit.i would like to build a drag car but not enough money for that yet.one day.
as for the other toy i will keep you posted.

westi ·

i will post some pic's when i get back.but before i left the head's came of for a look all good, but the valves looked alittle small, nah just kidding.they are perfect but will get sent away to be checked.the barrel's and pistons have a few minor scores in them,no air filters will do that, damn portland return road.nothing to worry about yet, they are heavier wear patterns more than normal but nothing mayjor.when i lose my finger in one i will let you know but at the moment you can only see them in the rite light.
the heads should be back in the shop before i get back on monday.so should be the shell.i can't wait to se her all dolled up,i am even more excited about the first scratch,it usually comes from someone giving you a hand, ahh well that's life.lol
i will also post up some pic's of some brakes and tinware and cage stuff we had done in the mad rush before i left.not on my car ,but still VW stuff.
i am back off to the pool.

Some of the many spiffy parts that are for Westi's Ride.

dangerous ·

I made a bronze bush to replace the plastic one.

Unfortunately as seen previously there was a lot of damage and poor workmanship inside the USA tranny.
Not even the superdif could be saved.
The spiders had welded themselves onto the shafts,
an inturn it sheared off the roll pins and munched up the houing,
The schrapnel was even galled up on the out side of the side gears!!

dangerous ·

But now onto happier out look of the future.

In this shot you can see the dual billet ERCO side covers.
They are a little more expensive than your run of the mill cast side covers,
but enable the EXTRA through bolt conversion to be done to the Rhino case.

dangerous ·

I will post some more progress over the next week or so if that is OK Westi?

Do you have a source down there for the 15mm sized M8 nuts and washers?
I would like to use some to retain the side covers and intermediate housing.
I need 26 of them.
Used is OK, but perhaps new ones might look spiffy?

dangerous ·

In the pics so far are:

Rhino Case

Dual ERCO Billet side covers

Aluminium spool (good skids now!)

Billet 4-bolt retainer

Timken thrust bearing

Pinion Bearing

Thrust plate for under nose cone

New bronze reverse fork

Mainshaft set with super duty 1&2 gears(closer ratio than stock)

And the steel Hybrid hub.

Not in the photo are the close ratio 3rd and 4th gears out at welding.

westi ·

lookin good,
as for posting knock yourself out.
i am still on cloud 9 from the parts arriving, it's getting closer.
i have a few things that i need to update.been busy making the little things.
as for the nuts will chromoly headstud nuts be ok,i think i might have some.if not i will ring my suplier tommorow.
cheer's dave for the pic's ,i will go home with a woody tonight.wife look out i am comin home early.lol

westi ·

dave ,do you know the difference between a flow benches that have 10' of water as compared to 28',the only reason i ask is because my heads were done at 28'' and they don't match the reading's i am getting @10'.
any info would help.

dangerous ·

To convert any pressure drop,
divide one by the other,
and then square root your answer.

So if you flow at 10" like I do,
28 divided by 10=2.8
square root 2.8
=1.67332
This is your multiplier.

So if you got say 125cfm @.650 lift,
multiply the 125 by 1.67332
=209.165cfm @28"

Just out of interest
a fellow once told me that the figure he got with 25" was closest to his HP number
on a Superflow dyno with his V8 engines.

Mine is no where near this number, with the slow air speed I have,
I would never say my motor in anywhere near optimum, both in design and tune.

Hope wifey was OK!

dangerous ·

Any 15mm nuts would be fine(and thick washers too) in M8.
It would be a shame to separate a set of studs from their nuts,
The ones I have seen were just black coated VW ones anyhow.

Anyone know where I can buy bulk nuts and washers?

westi ·

there on there way
32 nut's and washers
so if for say a set of heads flowed 185cfm@ 10' that should be 311cfm @ 28' is that right.no carbs just manifolds with new lift and valve job.650 lift.
as for the wife she has all long weekend to learn how to walk again.lol.i wish .

polarbus93 ·

you could a company called blackwood's they produce all metal type fasteners. not sure of number though

dangerous ·

westi wrote:there on there way

I get 309.5642...but!

If you got that much CFM it would be a world record!

westi ·

maybe i did my calcs wrong then.
89 percent @ 210cfm @ 254mm of water.
i have one of the old flowbench manufacturing of australia doohickies.
0 was set before start and the test plate was instal and correct with in .5 of a percent before starting.but in saying that i don't know how correct the bench is itself.
it was purchase before christ was born and never used, that's how i cam to be the new owner, the guy said do you know how to use it,i said i think i can get my head around it ,he said all yours knock yourself out, even delivered it for me.
i don't know how accurate it is but i have just been ussing it to show me gains or losses.
it's good fun..
the heads actually flowed 17 percent better with the manifolds on.
i havent tried it with the carbies on yet.maybe next week.
any how i will show some pics of the heads and other stuff as i go.

westi ·

here is some pic's of general stuff i have been doing while waiting for my bit's to arrive.

dangerous ·

Did you have the spark plug in?

There will be some big gains in the chamber shrouding.
Especially around the inlet.

matberry ·

Thanks for sharing Westi.

westi ·

yeh plug in.
afer you said that it was aliitle high i went and redid everything from scratch, came up with the same reading.
i am going to do it again though.i am playing around with chambers and swirl.
thanks for the heads up on the valve area,as you can tell nothing has been done there yet.
the biggest improvement i have found was with the manifold.after re-welding and shaping so that it tappers all the way down to the valve,it gave a 16 percent gain.
i am going to be doing my tests with the full exhaust and inlet in tack ,it won't be easy but i would like to play around abit.
once i have finished all my testing i will post up all of my results, gains and losses with pics.should make for some interesting conversation's.

dangerous ·

Your maths seems correct but the numbers are still high.
The only other thing to check is leakage with both valves shut.
The other thing is a temp correction,
but this does not account for the huge numbers.

On the SF bench the flat out scale is 185cfm I think,
but other than calibration, and a correction for temp rise, everything else looks good.

Regarding the chamber unshrouding, the latest word is not to go too far based solely on CFM.

Also apparently too much area at low lift can produce a pressure drop and air speed reduction.
A good rule of thumb(too late on my own heads!),
is to ONLY have as much clearance around the valve
as the gap from seat to valve at a given lift.

I also put a centre hole/dimple in an old valve to scribe a concentric line on the chamber around the valve.

The deep unshrouding I did on my chambers produced good low lift flow,
but all this has seemed to do was extend the rev range,
effectively making less power at lower rpm without any gains to the peak power number....or so my theory goes.

Luckily the roller profile cams can get past these areas pretty fast,
and even with small duration at .050"
can still have the lift area curve as good as most flat tappet profiles.
Smaller duration for me soon.

Where most high power VW engines seem to differ from mine,
is the high flow number and air speed (without going "sonic choke") at maximum lift used.

On a VW based casting you should not have too much problem keeping the air speed high.

kroozzn63 ·

wow westi looking sweet

dangerous ·

I Spot faced and tapped a hole in the intermediate housing to allow oil feed to 4th gear.

Then drilled the Rhino case to add a through-stud between the original side cover studs.
This is meant to help maintain crownwheel and pinion mesh.

Here is Westi's spiffy spool,
and the ultra rare 4.125 "O" series crown wheel.
Very stout tooth form.

Here is the chrome moly pinion bearing retainer.
This needed 0.010" off the face to give room for the wider first gear.

I rebushed the shift rod holes in another intermediate housing.
Westi's old tranny had this done in the USA,
but the bushes were only half length, and had too much slop.
The nose cone was the same.
It had a new bush, but only on the out board end, and very sloppy fit.
I have re done them all for more precise shift quality.

dangerous ·

The other mod I have done is add a thust bearing on the end of the pinion.

Because the intermediate housing is made from mag and not alum like mine,
this type of arrangment takes the thust out to the steel plate that goes under the nose cone.

I made up a 4140 holder to match the bearing hole in the housing,
and it is machined on its end face to control the bearing preload.

A recess is cut into the intermediate housing to take a hardened steel thrust washer.(VW part)
Also in the pic is a small spacer to position the nut back to original position,
and well clear of the inner race.

I have 0.010" preaload built in.
Here is the washer in postion.
The thrust plate and nose cone clamp all this down.

Here is a thrust plate I spoke of: (file photo)

Now for final wash up and clean assembly time!

westi ·

looking great dave.thanks once again for you hard work.

i am getting so excited.i think i might have it ready for the nationals.
that would make a good first cruise for when she gets back on the road.

Dasdubber ·

Nice stuff Dave - don't mind a bit of gearbox porn every now and then 🙂

I bet you can't wait to get your hands on it westi!

FLT42C ·

one of my most watched threads on here 🙂

westi , how did the cooling setup work out ? any feedback vs a standard shroud/porsche shroud ? temps etc

westi ·

head temps sat @ 180 but we haven't checked them against a standard or porsche as yet.
oil temps were a bit cold.it takes about 1/2 at idle to reach good oil temps or about 5-10 driving it.we made the oil cooler alittle to big.
oil temp at is hottest doesn't go over 140' -155' f.
yes alan ,i can't wait.
the car is long over due for a good thrashing.

Dak-A-Tak ·

Is that car Bird Shit Blue ?

westi ·

which one

dangerous ·

The set up of the crownwheel & peanut was straight forward,
except for a couple of issues.
I had to machine out the bearing recesses in the side covers
because their interference was excessive, at .004"!

The blue arrow points toward the bearing holes,
and the other thing in this photo is the coupling
that needs to be bored out to clear the splines in these mainshafts.
This one was done from the factory, but not quite enough.
So back in the lathe and another 0.004" removed.
Pretty hard matrerial too.

Also the left hand side cover needed 2.5mm off the inside to clear the bolt heads of the crownwheel.

Once these parts were machined, the bearing preload could be set,
and then the pinion depth and backlash.
I have covered these processes in the past so I wont bore you.
But the pinion shim was reduced by 0.1mm
because with the reduced backlash I like to run (less than .004"),
the pattern had moved too far along toward the nose.
The backlash is adjusted with side cover shims,
while maintaining the same stack to keep preload the same.

Also not shown is the setting of the gear's end floats,
and welding of the hubs on 3rd & 4th.
I have covered these things in previous posts I have done if you want to search.
I like to give the gears a little more end float
and more clearance on the needle bearings too.
I have found a special type of lathe tip that is very good for machining hard materials.
So in this case I have given Westi extra clearance,
but not exceeding the factory 0.25mm end clearance.
3rd and 4th close up when welded, so these were bored with .001" extra clearance.
this is because the input shaft spins inside them,
some times at maximum engine rpm.
1 & 2 were left standrd in the bore, and between 0.2mm and 0.25mm end clearance.

When in the jig two issues arose.
One was that reverse gear was rubbing on the 2.08 second gear.
Because of its larger diameter,
1mm needed to be removed from the shoulder of reverse.

Also the 4th gear was excessively noisy.
This is unusual unless the teeth are straight cut.
On a chance, I stripped everything down again and deburred the teeth and roots with my trusty Dremel.
Problem solved.

Most modern gears will not have this problem,
but because the key style gears are less common these days.
This one was a NOS one that I was able to find with the ratio I wanted.
I installed a hard key in this case.

This particular keyed design is excellent because after assembly, a large nut(32mm socket size) clamps down after the gear and bearing are pressed on.

The Weddle mainshaft design is also a favourite if mine.
Where VW went to a large diameter spline,
and you press the hub down on a flimsy circlip,
THIS mainshaft has a smaller spline,
and a nice shoulder for the hub to press onto.
It also has the big nut to hold everything down.
(not a circlip)

The appropriate hub is also used,
and this one is steel rather than cast.
Supoib!

Westi sent up a whole heap of 15mm spanner size 8mm nuts and washers.
These are from VW head studs on later type 1's.

I used these on the side covers and intermediate housing.
This will help keep everything clamped down (I hope! Westi the cain merchant!!)

The nose cone and thrust plate retain the new thrust bearing on westi's tranny,
so I machined the face of the nose cone before bolting everything down.
This ensures a nice flat surface,
and also to account for some of the thickness of the thrust plate.

The nose cone also got new bushes(outside AS WELL AS INSIDE!),
and a nice new German seal.
These bushes can be bought from most stores, except for a few odd models.
I made the one on the inside for Westi,
but the outside one that holds the seal is an off the shelf item.

Up the front(back?) the clutch arm assembly is installed with solid bronze bush,
and Westi has made up a long arm.

Here is a side view of some gaskets.
These side covers don't come with those studs,
so I removed 12 from some old side covers.

The thickness of these gaskets is varied to give clearance of the axle tube,
without any end play.
The only thing left is the plastic "flower"
that clips onto the side cover before the axles and tubes.

Mega Marathon done!!
Turned out supoib.

westi ·

westi ·

just re-flowed the head there was a small leak through the exhaust valve but it still flowed 184 cfm @ 10" of water @ 0.650" lift

westi ·

flowed the exhaust port and came up with 163cfm @ 10' at 0.650"

dangerous ·

Gearbox final assembly and commentry updated above.
Typers cramp!

Just for peoples referece, a job like wesi's with all the TLC that I wanted is over 40 hours work.
Luckily, as a hobby I can do all this and not have to charge normal shop rates.
It is nice to be able to do a job the way it should be and not be limited, or make comprimises.

STOCK ·

HEY THATS A PREETY SWEET LOOKING BOX
HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT ABOUT PAINTING IT PINK

WHO'S THE SWEAT SHOP WORKER WORKING ON
THE INTERIOR
HE MUST DO PRETTY SWEET WORK I HEARD HE'S REALLY CHEAP
TO

westi ·

i think i have some madjenta (pink) laying around somewere.
as for the trim guy he work's for donuts, but as you can tell he eats a few so he is not real cheap.his favourite saying is i have hershy chocolate kisses.
he is pretty good with a pressure pack can also.he is the only person that is able to get a gloss finish out of mat black.pretty good if you ask me.

reub ·

Mate, those trims are tough as 👍

westi ·

yeah bby.. though nails rust....I'm sure that a beast like this wont be left long enough to rust👍Even so a day without driving is time wasted....what are your plans?

westi ·

time maybe around a week or two.no longer than a month.
i only have to fork out alittle more for wheels .tyres rear brakes and ali hubs.
just about every thing has come back at the same time so it is just up to me to find the time.
cage will be finished tommorrow.front brakes finished later tonigh, beam back together tommorow and then finish steering and start assembly of everything else.
it may wishful thinking but i would like to drive it to the nationals.
thanks for the kind words of encouragment.i will keep the pic's comming

westi ·

Guys is there anything more apealing than a nice tight clean pink box ready for a good thrashing, and pete it's actually pink not magenta

hellbugged ·

westi wrote:Guys is there anything more apealing than a nice tight clean pink box ready for a good thrashing, and pete it's actually pink not magenta
better would be a box that Dave has had a hand in😁

did i just think that, or type it too😊

great thread Westi, thanx for all the pics and details, i know it takes a bit of effort to keep the updates flowing..........THANX........luv your work!

Dak-A-Tak ·

ang3lsholocaust ·

The beam looks bent on the drivers side 🥷
Or is it just in the photo?

ang3lsholocaust ·

Ooops. Should have read the rest of the replys before i posted. 😀

063bug ·

The beam may look bent due to the lens he may be using on the camera ("fish eye" deforms pictures) but I know what you mean about it "looking" bent ???

reub ·

Looking Sweet dude!

....here are a few of the images 'brightened' to show off your work 🙂

westi ·

yes it is bent, don't worry guy's,
it is bent 2'degrees per side for a reason.i might not know what that reason is but when i remember i will let you know.lol
as for the ride hight it only will go higher if i buy new shocks, fuck that.it does actually sit on the ground with the adjuster out .
i made the spinldles 70 drop alittle to much i think.
we have also taken out one of the torsion bars and replaced it with a sway bar internally.
will post some more on mon or tues

westi ·

here's a few more pic's of the action so far.
should have heaps more done tommorrow.

westi ·

r u sure dave i found a tag heuer watch in there,if it ain't yours,woho i hit the jackpot.
it won't take much effort to make it nicer than mine,we are just aiming for neat and nice,oh and light.most inportantly light.
it will make a quick litle car alot quicker, hopefully.

cheers for the comments guy's keeps me going on these cold misurable nights.

update front finished, brakes.lines, tank ,steering needs alittle more playing but nothing major.hym's are a litle to close on full lock,if i'm using that much lock it means i am in a hole world of hurt.
i will try to put up some more pics tonight.

fullnoise ·

Amazing.

You've put in such a huge amount of high quality work. I think it's tops that it's painted up nice to do it justice.

The only problem is that you'll have to think up another number plate now.

PNKBITS 😂

koolkarmakombi ·

PNKBOX

westi ·

matberry ·

Since fan housing and box are 'that' colour, I realy like PNKBITS,
on the other hand, if ONLY the box was 'that'colour, I think I'd prefer PNK-BOX, got a nice ring to it [tag heuer I believe].

Dasdubber ·

Great stuff westi - as long as you lot are eatin donuts and not punching donuts then all is cool 🙂

Very impressed by a lot of the fabrication work and the speed at which you work!
Keep it up.

good one mat/al as for the punching the only form of that going on is the constant sledging we put on each other(we tried punching a donut it would fit)
k-love OMYBOX looks better don't you think.

i am still not sold on pnkbts or pnkbox not yet anyway.
keep them coming and i will try to think of something also.
maybe we can put two together.

as for the build i have been busy ,it is getting very close.
greasing bearings .getting the box in,setting up arse end etc etc.

She says quote "why don't you paint your whole car pink and then I might come and watch you race".

Please help me....this is one of those lose lose situations.

stanley.your on you own buddy.
i have no response what so ever that could help you.
good luck with your colour choice.

VWFREAK ·

Great stuff, should be a beast.

westi ·

it's all top secret.lol
i will post some pic's up later.
i did find that the head was leaking.cfm wise.
the barrel was about a 1 mm from seating.
so we started all over again.
it now flows 164cfm @ 10',or 78 percent of 210 @ 10's @ 598 lift.throught the head only.i have cut the manifolds in half to make sure it has a nice flow from manifold to head.it also made it a bit easier to see how much more material could be removed.
don't worry pagey i will keep you posted.

westi ·

i have nearly finished the heads.story so far.
164cfm@598lift @ 10' of water.before we started to match port.
i will check them again when i am finished.

i have started to do some chamber work also.

dangerous ·

That's the go westi.
What is Boris up to now?(I see all)

matberry ·

Holy Crap Westi, I thought you said a few changes but you have been seriously busy... Well done, cant wait to see more. Those manifolds look like they are close to the limit. Fuel ??? Draw through ???

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

so do we have EFI or draw through???? I do see a 48 sitting on the bench in the background beggine to be used LOL. What comp are you planning on running with how much boost??

reub ·

SWEET....DUDE.... yeah but what does mine say 😀

Nice work dude

1303Steve ·

Hi Brad

You must have got busy after I left. You've thrown a red herring photo in to confuse people.

Steve

westi ·

a couple of those photo's were not of my stuff.(turbo)
just keeping you guessing.
i haven't been able to respond to some of your questions my computer went down again.

the ports aren't much bigger than they were before, just neatend up alittle.i rushed when i did them last time.so it has always buged me.
as for flow they ended up at 81 percent of 210 cfm @10' of water at actual valve lift of 598'
170cfm.
as for the turbo set up it's methanol with microtech.

i will keep u guy's posted on how i am going.i have forgoten what some of you have written,so i will read and post again later.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

The turbo engine belongs to Boris??

matberry ·

I reckon. Westi's got that lovely pink bit [fan shroud] and no alt like the turbo motor has.
Must admit 'nearly' had me fooled, as easy as that is.

westi ·

nah no turbo for now.
comp around 13 to 1,but haven't decided 100percent yet.still thinking.
i have nearly finished the pedal assembly,it's looking pretty flash.nearly finished the heads and my rear brake set up will arrive on monday.
still on track for the nationals but, still waiting on rockers, doors to be fitted and extractors and exhaust still have to be made.i still have a few trick idea's i have been thinking about.i will let you know if they turn into something if i have any free time.

i thought i might through a curve ball to keep you all on you feet.dave you know everything.did you install a camera in my box next to the watch.

Not very secretive!
I can see the tranny killer tilton clutch,
Competition Eliminator heads,
Tall deck case and LONG AA barrels
means it has a long stroke AND long rod.

Should be fast if it gets tuned up correctly.
Especially with new WESTI intake runners.

Now,
back to you regular scheduled program....

Stanley ·

😂.....nice

Come on Westi...the suspense is murder

vw54 ·

the clutch is good

westi ·

hey guy's its been awhile.
i have been pretty busy with normal work so things have started to go alittle slower.
heads ended up at 160.5 cfm @ 10 ' of water @600 'lift
this was through the whole box and dice.carby/manifold.
so if we use daves calc's,its a truck load.i haven't opened them up that much i concentrated more on the manifols more than the heads.
comp is now just over 14 to 1.
pauter rockers bla bla blar.heaps has been done but you can't realy tell in all the photo's.
i will hopfully be wieghing the car this weekend to see how well the jenny craig diet has been going.
any way hear are some pic's.
i will try to post some more over the weekend.

enjoy.

how fat r those wheels.

westi ·

sorry the heads flowed.81 percent of 210, at 10 ' of water.
170cfm,160 was 1/2 a manifold.
i have to many numbers written on my whiteboard.
whats that work out to dave.

dangerous ·

Very nice work Westi!
Love the pipes!

You bench is different to mine,
but based on the 14 to 1 and looking at those ports,
I think you might crack 200 @ wheels...well into the 11's and doin' it with style.(no problem with juice though!)

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Westi looks great man. Attention to detail always does it for me!!

reub ·

Very nice dude👍

westi ·

thanks guy's
it's all coming together well so far so there are bound to be snags somewere.
pipes are alot shorter than last time,we thought we would go from one extreme to the other(lenght of primary).
it use to be 60' now 37' from head to end of collector.we also used stainless looks alittle nicer.it proberly only going to get wrapped anyway.
i am making a titanium muffler.so i will post up some picks if i don't get the shits and give up.i am so tired bt the end is so close i can smell it.

Stanley ·

Westi....that is lookin' numero uno dude. Can't wait to see it all together.....👍👍

westi ·

thanks stan.
hey pete i hope those pics were good enough.
if not i will take some more.
the pedals are in and workiing ,carby's are back on and ready to go.just a few little things to go now.
i am getting fuckin excited.
can't wait to kill it ,with love ofcourse.

Turbo54 ·

Awesome job and I love the collector. I know how hard these are to get perfect and this is perfect.
Well done.
T54

Dasdubber ·

Thats looking bloody awesome westi - top work mate!

Mick058 ·

blows me away, can't wait to see it in the flesh.

westi ·

thanks guy's
collectors are easy when you have abit of practice.
and i have had abit
the hardest bit is trying something new, coming up with the design, and making it work.
the mufler will take heaps more of my time.titanium has to be cut perfect.and ultra cleanbefore welding.

Dak-A-Tak ·

Pinkbit 2 is looking good ,mate .Was watching Portland to-day and I can say you don't mind reving it ! or giving shit !
When you get time ,I'm keen to get those - - - ,on the go soon.I bet that piece of tittanium wasn't cheap .

westi ·

fuck no.

have you decided whats doing, mine or yours.hush hush and all that.
the boys and i have a surprise for you pagey, can't say what it is but .you will either love it or hate it.

Stanley ·

those pedals look great..👍

westi ·

yeh stan, they are one of my personal favourites of the hole car.1/2 the weight of standard ,i love em.
maybe i should look at getting jenny graig to sponsor my car.it lost over 100 kg's in just 8 weeks.with easy to follow steps it was so simple.
thanks jenny.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

37" is short for the primaries compared to what you had mate. I'm running 41" on my type 4 2.0L and could make them shorter but then I'd have pipes hanging out the back and in a lowered bus that can spell trouble.

westi ·

😉

555bug ·

I speak for everone when I say we: all need so high quality in car footage 🙂

westi ·

yeh i agree.incar.
ok here we go with a quick run down.
i had a call at about 5 pm
question goes like this,
we have just done our first run and it sounds like we have blown a head gasket,do you have any,180hp
i jump in car to go retorque heads.
all tests were in 4th gear.always made power before 6000.
retorque first run again 180hp no timing no fuel has been added.
we then chased fuel for a few hours doing run after run, trying to make all transitions nice and smooth.
the carhas always dropped of @6000
last few runs we went wild on fuel and the car was making power to 8000 but wasn't producing any more than at 6000.
last run was 198hp @ 5800.
all the first power runs were good all of the second runs you could here the heads leaking.
so not a bad night overall but we couldn't get consistant runs with out head leak down.
so dave ,pete or anyone else out there,
what head torque should i be running.
i have been dioing it at 30 to 35ft pounds.
so i will post some footage when my fat controller rocks up this afternoon.

Stanley ·

Thanks for the update westi...i'll leave tech stuff for those who know

STOCK ·

the fat controller will be there this
arvo & we'll post some footage
& do fun things like pull off heads

555bug ·

can you o-ring the head? i've had mates do this on high boost water cooled cars with good success

westi ·

we will pull her apart and see first.
it might be something silly.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Are you running head gaskets at all?? Know of a few who don't run any at all..

hellbugged ·

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE wrote:Are you running head gaskets at all?? Know of a few who don't run any at all..
don't know of any who do!

did you lap the barrels into the head?

what type/size/brand of head studs?

lube the washers and studs when tourqing?

really shouldn't be a problem till you start running forced induction.

As above, what studs now, how is the case machined at barrel seats, details at studs and case inserts? Are they spot faced?

westi ·

cb studs 10mm
and yes yes yes for everything else
i think we have a washer problem.
we are just getting down to the heads know and it looks like a colapsed washer or two.
we will wait and see when we get down to it.
i will try to post up the vid's alittle later also.

Lets just say that i was trying to get some copper head gaskets quite a while ago and went to a "Vw specialist" who stood there and argued with me that i don't need them if the compression isn't too high. Just lap the barrel into the head and tension to 28 foot pounds.

Needless to say I laughed at him and proceeded to say " I guess that's one way to get repeat business" then walked out and went somewhere else.

dangerous ·

Head gaskets in a copper materials DO have a place , and a use in some VW situations,
but are not neccesary unless you need a specified deck height,
or are compenating for some other engine factor.

It should go without saying,
that if you choose to use them they should be located on their OD
to prevent being forced out.

I used them on one of my engines.

On my blown engine I used them as a "sacrificial lamb", and it saved my head a couple of times.
And yes, if my tune up was closer it would be un-neccesary.

Having everyting machined square including nut and washer surfaces,
as well as the case and head surfaces is normal procedure,
and Westi has all these bases covered.

When increasing the tension on head studs,
a thicker washer is a nice addition,
and I believe that is the path that Westi is headed.

Also "there is always time for lubrication".
You MUST use a minimum of oil on threads and nut faces.
I use moly paste or anti-seize.

The biggest cause of head seal failure (excluding machining error)
would have to be lean/poor tune.
The pressure spikes from detonation and/or preignition
far exceed any normal forces that should occur.

In fact any normal boost level (less than 50psi? whats normal?) , in CORRECT TUNE, would not reach the cylinder pressure of those nasty spikes.

matberry ·

Thanks Dave for correcting us.
Guru Butler
Dangerous Muffin man....

My present engine is running 040" copper head gaskets as she has zero deck. End CR is 9.7 :1, but a bit more would be nice, but as a streeter, it'll have to do.

Good luck Westi...14:1 is certainly high, but sounds like you should be able to keep her together.

westi ·

fucked washers.
gona pull her right down and have a good look over every thing.make sure she's all good.never built one this big before so it won't hurt to have a look see.
i have another cam i really want to try.hopefully all will be good.
it is a fk97 what do you reakon.
i will try post up those vids today or tonight.

063bug ·

Man you are tolerant, patient and committed to success... keep up the good work 👍

Can't wait to see a good pic in the daylight..

dangerous ·

All quiet in Westi town?
What did you do for studs/washers?

westi ·

studs gone,washers gone.
started fresh with new.
pulled it down,to have a look see.
lifters all good
cam all good
bearings for crank all good
when i say all good i mean no unusual wear and tear so to speak.
rod bearings not all good
some one was on the piss when they shouldn't have been.
there was no bearing crush, but there was no problem with them yet, but there would have been in the near future i pressume.
so i am happy that i pulled it down.
all my bit's and pieces should be in buy the end of the week i hope ,so we will most likely be missing a few hours sleep between now and the dyno day.
i am going to stick the heads back on the bench.so i will take some footage show you what i have done.

other than that i have been flat out with customers stuff,
thanks for all the support boy's. still haven't heard a good plate sugestion yet.

gapped the rings tonight and lightened the pistons.getting ready for a long haul on the weekend.
still have to grind the new cam for rod swing.
but atleast i got something done.i was going to take pic's but gapping rings is pretty boring stuff.
next week is going to suck.so much to do so little time.but hopfully at the end i will finally get to go for a thrash,i am dieing to get her out on the track.i am slowly starting to get excited again.so we should be ready to rumble soon.

reub ·

Don't know how you keep any motivation up working like a dog dude....

We all look forward to seeing how it all goes👍

westi ·

me too.
just finished making my titanium vee-band for my street exhaust.
one more thing ticked of the list.
next is two steel ones( vee-band) so that i can change from my street to drag exhaust with one bolt.whohoo.

dangerous ·

Looking forward to seeing it all back together Westi.
Make sure you check that piston to valve clearance with that longer duration.
What did you do for heads studs?

westi ·

i had the pistons re-cut another 80' just to make sure.still have to do a final check when assembling,as for the studs i bought all new ,and new washers as well.
thanks for the reminder.
its all the little things that take up so much time.
i was also tinking of resizing the venturi's.
i will take some pic's tonight.

westi ·

i have just kick her in the guts,
man i miss the sound of this thing.
it has been a long hard week so far and i haven't had a chance to take any pic's but i will run you all through what i have been doing once all is back together.
if you don't hear from me soon it's because she is getting loaded up and ready to go to nambucca.
hopefully i will see alot of you all there.

Westi see you at Valla. I've been told to take a heap of pics of your car by Pagey. He doesn't think he'll make it down so he asked for lots of pics especially of your car. Plus a ride in it with the video camera if possible!!

westi ·

no prob's.
we just finished loading her up.
we finished the car at 6am this morning, there a few little things that will need some atenttion but who cares we made it.

Yep saw you heading north on Pennant Hills road at about 11.30am Friday morning................Car looked AWESOME on the trailer, I nearly had an accident looking back at it as you passed !!!!

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Pictures really don't do your car justice mate. Lots of little things he camera doesn't pick up on the car in a pic but in real life they all become visible. Top work!!

did you win anything?? I left before the trophy presentation was held.

westi ·

same for me guy's i can't take my eye's of it either, the car looks f--kin hot.i love it.

rod it's jet black i think .but who cares if you have the same wheels we can say it's a two car team.it's all good.
cheer's for all the nice comments and pat's on the back guy's, but as you can tell i have a good pack of bitches to help me,so the thanks and apreciation must be shared as a group effort.
to all i had a chance to catch up with it was cool.i had a ball.i can't wait for warwick. hopefully i will get more of a chance to catch up.

i was stok'd with how ot sounds,it's crisp as. it was just a little to low to drive around so i didn't get to have a good drive yet.

i didn't get any trophies for her ,but i didn't expect any anyway, when you have that many people around your car all day,it's better than any trophy could ever make you feel.
we just have a few little things we want to get sorted, and then out to the track she goes.
we have a few pic's i will try to post them up when i can.
i will also go through some of the stuff we did with the engine/door's and other little od's and sod's.if anyone is interested.

next on the list of things to do.
does anyone have a big tent organized for warwick that might have a enough room for the junka.
and does anyone know any good places to stay up there if you are not staying at the track.
i don't care were we stay .track is fine with me but nice accom with a warm bed ain't bad either.

any how, for those who didn't go you missed out for those that did i hope you all had as much fun as we did.
if i forgot to answer anyones questions just send them again,i am still a bit tired.
cheer's for the pic's daimo

nice accommodation with a warm bed.....harden up westi

can't wait to crawl over the junka at warwick.

westi ·

you reakon i need to eat a box of nails.and harden the fuck up.lol
i agree .
we just don't have the room in the tow vehicle to bring heaps of shit up with us.
once we put the fuel in the back the car we don't have much room left.

westi ·

it takes to long to upload so this will make it easier.

Westi give me a call re Warwick marquee. 0412 559 592.

westi ·

matberry ·

Westi, re your tune up....

Thinkin about how responsive Junka sounds
I spoke to Henry for a while, we were both oooing and ahhhhing over Junka
while I was secretly getting some interesting comparisons and IDA tips from the man.

Yesterday I did some jet changes to my POS due to it sounding flat after fitting muffler and me not being happy with the laps around the dynoday test track.

Ended up 155 mains down to 145 and some more time to come sorting airs, but WOW.
Tyres are shit, but she now lights up both rears down hill with no help from the clutch, and huge 2nd gear snakey patches left around our neighborhood !!!

It also seems to take ages to get any temp with the new internal engine coatings..... how to get some more comp cause I'm sure temp is no prob .....???

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Got a few more to come mate.

London Bugger ·

WOW Westi the bug look the dogs delicate parts!
Well done mate, Whens it due on the track?

westi ·

me too. we will hopefully be doing some driving on the weekend.check out out few things, brakes ,temps ,etc, etc.
i am going to make a camera mount tommorrow night so you can all have a look when i take her out.
next wednesday is the day.i bet it pisses down.

this is most of the photo's from the whole build.

dangerous ·

Anything to report live from the track?!

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

yes something would be good.

westi ·

nah we had a push rod come out of the rocker just as we were getting ready to go,i think the car was trying to tell me something.
so rtather than rush we decided to do a few checks.all was good in the end no damage was caused, just aliitle pride of the bitch that had set them up.
so we took her up and down the street for testing.holy cow.
i am alittle scared know.i think she's gona be fast.
it's a very angry little car.
we are going to put her back on the dyno over the next few days so we can tune it for the stinger instead of the street muffler we had before.it seem's realy crisp through the stinger and alittle taimer through the muffler.but it might just be my ears.
i will be definatly out there next week if all goes to plain.
i will proberly be doing some more runs up and down the street so i will take some photage.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

bugger!! ahh well it's better to be safe than sorry. with the kind of power it made before and the fact that your car is nice and light are we looking at something around mid 11's once it's on the track?

westi ·

this is the old set up but the only thing that has changed is the cam.and alittle comp.(less)comp.
the old cam was 2248
new is 2297 i think i will have to drag out the specs.
old dur was advertised 318 new is 332 and about 80' more lift or somewere around there.
i did have it around here somewere but while we were away at nambucca the apprentice has cleaned up the joint.i can't find a bloody thing.

2443TT ·

Thats a very cranky and healthy looking dyno sheet you've got there! Whats the lift at 0.050" and did you take a video of the dyno run?

westi ·

page 29 i think.for the vid.
lift @ 50' not sure .i have it all written down from when we put it in.
i remember around 432 ,442, 452 at cam total .duration is around 288- 290 @50' ,to many measurements to remember, brain overload.i have ther flu bad.
it ramp's up quick, stay's open long and suck's in air.
old lift was something around 557' new is over 650.

dangerous ·

Lift at 50 thou is....50 thou😂

Seriously though Westi, that is a real rocket!
I should have been paying more attention!
With that light weight and now most likely more power(good lift!),
my guess is that should easily be in the low elevens!

mactaylor ·

might be time to invest in some bigger carbs aswell!!!!!!!

westi ·

686 kg's with driver, should make for an exciting drive.
we will find out next week i suppose.hopefully all will be good.
i am looking forward to some testing at the track.i realy just want to play around with the 60ft's and rear end set up,we don't know if she is going to want to go skyward or not yet.i would like to get away with out wheel bars,if possible.time will tell.
as for bigger carby's we can always dream.if you buy bigger carby's then you may as well buy bigger heads if you buy bigger heads you run out of money real quick, thats a can of worm's i can do with out at the moment.
i would like to just enjoy it for a little bit before i drain anymore funds.i am broke.

i am still sick as a dog ,so i hope this passes quickly.i hope what i rote makes sense,my brain is a meatpie.mash and gravy.

As you may have read, Westi is sick. But this didn't stop him from giving me a tour of JUNKA today and we had a yarn for quite a while. JUNKA was started up and all I can say is Ssswwwweeeettttt, you really need to hear this engine for your self and it will also bring a smile to your face.

Westi, nice to meet up with your this afternoon and thanks for your time and knowledge.

Get well, Kevin

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Forget bigger carbs EFI FTW!! but that also means a lot more money too LOL

westi ·

way to much for me.if i do efi it has to get a turbo and that ain't good.because i love the sound of big boost.50pound sounds good but it never sounds good for long, engines don't like big boost.lol

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

with the weight of your car 20 psi would enough to run sub 10's !!!!

westi ·

i should be able to do that with enough Nos shoved up it's arse .lol
whats another rebuild between races meets.it works for rod.lol
one day when pigs fly and money grows on tree's i might go down the turbo route, but until the lucky lotteries office makes that call.i will stay n/a with alittle spot of nos every now and then.

westi ·

once again we are happy and disapointed all at the same time.
the canadian clubs are getting a good smashing tonight.
we left early to go set up the dyno and see how much this little donky would make.it sounded sweet.

we got one run,one measly run.

it was 209.8hp we were happy as.
we went to do a back up run.
engine has locked.
back to the drawing board.
will let you know the news as it unfolds.

good news out of all this is that i finally got the 200 mark under my belt.but just like everything else i have to back it up now.
it sounded so good ,why me.boho.boho.

Mick058 ·

200 mark, well done Westi. Hope you get it right! Would love to see the Junka fly.

dangerous ·

Is that a flanged crank westi?
What thrust bearing are you using?

2443TT ·

Hi Westi,

If you do need a new set of main bearings for flanged crank I have a full set with T4 center main, std/std sizes, teflon coated ready to install. They were for my engine build back when I was going to use a T1 crankcase. Not using them anymore now though with the oxy boxer. Got a flanged main seal too that I cant use.

Cheers,

Ian

westi ·

not flanged crank.
cb performance moly.
mahle bearings.
i am getting ready to pull it apart now so give me an hour or 2 should have some news.

dangerous ·

One hour daylight savings?

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

2 hours is nearly up!!

westi ·

still haven't started.
had a worker go home sick.
so that means luck me has to finish of his work.

westi ·

the problem is once again will be put down to human error.
shall i say end float problem.yes.
there will be a head hung low tommorrow.2 heads actually.
the one that set it and the one that said tonight,na man i watched him do it 100 times it's set right.
maybe 101 would have been the magic number.

who can redowell the block as it has pushed the little bearing dowell alittle.i might be able to use a longer dowell as it is only slightly of,but i would prefer a new dowell hole.
crank looks good.it has just ever so lightly pick'd up the bearing.
any how of to bed for me.hopefully back together soon.
cya.

KOM123 ·

I'll start firing up the bbq, success is just around the corner!

Mick058 ·

good effort at 1am to let us know Westi 👍

hope work isnt tooooo early a start.

dangerous ·

You can use an old centre main bearing as a jig to re drill a new dowel hole.
Make sure oil holes still align if you change the index.

I have drilled the hole over-size and made a small stepped dowel,
making sure there is none of the fat part sticking out of the hole.

Keep end float near or above top clearance with alum case....0.006".

I have used as much as .010" with stock shim system with no problems.
It can effect the dizzy drive movement though.

Current flanged crank was set .009" from new on purpose, but mainly due to the large diameters of journal and flange.

You should be fine with .006".

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

tough luck man but at least you don't have handfulls of sad parts to go in the bin.

westi ·

good piont,no sad parts for the bin.
i will pull the rest of it right down tonight.clean ,measure and back together tommorrow ready for some more dyno pulls.
i love pulls.
oops.did i think out loud.

westi ·

started tinkering again tonight.
got the bottom end back together.
proberly do the rest tommorrow.
we will see how we go.i would love to go out to the track next week but i don't think i will have enough time.
all this lack of sleep realy catches up with you once you have been sick.

STOCK ·

i'll just get the violins out for ya😂😂😂
i'll see ya tonight & we'll get this top end together
i like pulls too 😂😂

westi ·

stock your still fat and useless haha

555bug ·

come on and get it finished already, I hate my job and I need some in car video to get me through the day 🙂

Hi Amy,is Eeyore back to his old self yet?

westi ·

i just started the engine again.wow i miss that sound.
i will be doing the reguar checks ,and then back to the dyno.
lets see how we go this time.
amy's car isn't ready yet some slacker hasn't done the engine yet.

Dak-A-Tak ·

Good to here that sound , mate . I just pulled my motor today and tomorrows job is to strip it down for a check-out .

Eeyore Freak ·

well that slacker should get a move on!!
Good to hear JUNKAs alive and breathing again👍
Eeyores interior should be finished tomorra!!!

westi ·

tommorrow never comes eeyore.lol
i hope all is well pete,i am still waiting to see that footage from jambo.

matberry ·

Bet she sounds sweet again, well done👍

westi ·

yeh sounds tuff,
there are a few little things still left to sort out,one little oil leak.and brakes need alittle work.

i have a tech question though.were on the dipstick can you run the oil level so that there is minimal crank slap in the oil.
we noticed that the oil is airated quite a bit.so having a deep sump i thought i might be able to run the oil alittle lower.
what's your thoughts.

hellbugged ·

interesting Westi..............i guess your's could cope better with the rocker drains as there shouldn't be so much gathering in there.........is it worth the risk of loosing oil pressure at the top end of the track tho, plenty of guys have done that before🙅

2443TT ·

Depends on how big your extended sump is. A lot of the turbo guys run a lower oil level to allow better drainage with their low mount turbo setups. I ran the oil level at the bottom of the dipstick with my 2332 turbo, and it had a 32mm oil pump so it really moved the oil around. I never lost oil pressure, though I wasnt reving past 6500 either (turbo too small). With the wide empi sump and full to the stock mark it was something crazy like 5.5lt capacity but my memories of this are from 2 years ago...

matberry ·

I used to run about 1/4" down the stick, with a Berg 4 qt sump, turning up to 9000 rpm, std drains, and never an oil surge/loss, only drag racing.

Eeyore Freak ·

whats going on!! arent you working late tonight?

westi ·

yeh always.
as for the sump the engine holds about 7 ltr's of oil so i would guess that by taking it a 1/4 of he way down the dipstick would only be around 1/2 ltr less oil,is this about right.
thanks for the inpt so far,
what oil is everyone using.
i use 20 -50w castrol gtx2,i was thinkng of changing to something alittle thiner.might pick up a few more pony's.every little bit counts.

Craig Torrens ·

I run Castrol Edge Sport 25-50w (Old Formulae R)

dangerous ·

I used to the Castrol product for many years no problem,(25W50 and 15W40)
but recently changed over to the ACE QPL 40.

I amvery happy with the outcome.

Plus the chemist who designed it is a Volksy dude,
so it is good to keep it in the family.

My total volume is 5.5 litres, and the crank probably splashes around in the oil at first,
but it quickly ends up in the valve covers.
I have restricted the pushrods to limit this.

My old VW cased engine had the oil level at the lower dip stick mark, and that was 5 litres.
This was mainly to stop the breather filling up due to the splash.
But at that time I never had a light that would tell me if the pressure was actually dropping at any point,
except for the stock light....in which time it was "all over".

As long as your oil pump is no bigger than say, 30mm,(mine is 26mm)
or your oil clearance is not excessive,
you should be able to run around 5.5 litres without starvation,
but be able to keep the crank out of the waves.

Stan's little 300ml extension is a great way to keep the pick-up fed,
but if you empty that out you may be cryng.

Perhaps a combination of a small deep sump,
plus something like stan's,
would be a good combination.

Formula Vee fellows dreamt that Idea up in the 60's with a little tin cup,
but having billet aluminium is a bit more sturdy in case you bottom out.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Vees now run a finned alloy sump extension to stop oil surge. Also extend the pick up down into the extension as Dave mentioned.

We are running Penrite mineral based oil in Troy's type 3. Once it has some K's on it we'll prolly switch to a semi synthetic.

mactaylor ·

westi at least yours is bigger than dave's, 26mm vs 30mm.

Eeyore Freak ·

im glad you liked the canadian clubs. we wouldnt buy them for just anyone!
tell stocko that hes a funny bastard!!🤘
my driving offenders course is going just grand by the way👎👎👎

byronmcmanus59 ·

i have a tech question though.were on the dipstick can you run the oil level so that there is minimal crank slap in the oil.
we noticed that the oil is airated quite a bit.so having a deep sump i thought i might be able to run the oil alittle lower.
what's your thoughts.

old mans says, first thing to work out is why your getting airation in your oil.. that shouldnt be happening. cause that causes cavitation in your oil pump and oil surge issues.

Stanley ·

cavitation and airation are to different things. Airation gives you an oil smoothy and ultimately poor lubrication where as cavitation is a result of say having too small a pump inlet or blocked filter. This results in bubbles which implode and can actually start pulling metal out of the suction side of your inlet.

Mick058 ·

Can cavitation occur from the 'smoothy' effect though? If smoothy is aerated oil, then air within a pump will cause cavitation. I guess it depends on how well the pump is being fed by the aerated water - gurgling etc...

Dak-A-Tak ·

We run Rods car about 5mm on dip stick from bottom but the motor has a 4qrt sump ,cooler, filter and oil is 10/30 mobil 1 synthetic . Volume is about 6ltrs .

westi ·

thanks pagey, near the bottom line or 5mm above that.

Stanley ·

Mick058 wrote:Can cavitation occur from the 'smoothy' effect though? If smoothy is aerated oil, then air within a pump will cause cavitation. I guess it depends on how well the pump is being fed by the aerated water - gurgling etc...
No....cavitation is caused by negative pressure (sucking).Aeration and cavitation will both ultimately end in failure, however aeration will have an affect almost immediately whereas cavitation takes some time to show up. The warning signs for each are slightly different. Aeration will show the usual signs of lack of lubrication (blueing/galling) where cavitation shows up as contamination damage due to metal contamination from the erosion of the pump at the inlet.
Aeration also shows up immediately with the "smoothy effect" whereas cavitation usually won't unless it's an extreme case.

I have seen cavitation so bad that it erodes hydraulic pumps to the point the inlet fittings fall out. Usually caused by dirty inlet filters or inadequate suction line size.

Mick058 ·

im just talking from a pump point of view, i haven't got the engine knowledge you lads have. I know that valving and blockages can cause cavitation, inadequate suction lines but also air (depending on the other mentioned causes). A simple air bubble between an impeller and a one way valve can cause cavitation and loss of prime - sorry, probably not quite related anyways

westi ·

cheers boy's for getting all technical on me.lol.
thanks for the help.
i am going to lower my oil level tonight and do some testing.lets see what happens, once this is all sorted it will finally be of to the dyno and then the track.fingers crossed.

Eeyore Freak ·

Kev will come and help. Hes always there anyway, allthough he never actually does anything.
A bit like stocko really🤪😁

byronmcmanus59 ·

yeah too true, but the aeration in the oil will be a large contributing factor, that will in term cause suction problems, and lead to cavitation.. which will destroy your engine. he's been working with performance and industrial engine for a good 30 years and has seen this many times.. most ending badly

the point im trying to make/the question im asking is why is your oil aerating..?? thats bad 😂

Eeyore Freak ·

its been a few dya ssince tour last post, so i thought id make it look beeter!!👍😂
when am i cummin 2 do bo????

mactaylor ·

I wonder if that driving course was for a dui?

westi ·

me thinks you may be right.luckily it was after the aa meeting.
freak, i hope you mean his hair .

Eeyore Freak ·

yes!! i definatly ment his hair!!!! (his back actually) although now my mind is wandering!

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

So some news Westi??

westi ·

dyno and then the track.
we went to a rat rod show on fathers day, forgot to take pic's, but the car got so much attention everyone loved it,it was realy cool to see that a vw can get all that appreciation from all different walks of life.nice pat on the back for all that have helped.

trying to organize a few power runs for tommorrow before hopfully hitting the track for a few wednesday street meets before warwick.
i will keep you all posted.

Eeyore Freak ·

hey bo

meowwww

westi ·

here puss,puss.
mmmeeeeeooooooowwwwww

Stanley ·

c'mon westi that's not being productive....you've got a dyno or a T&T to organise.

Eeyore Freak ·

theres no harm in a bit off fun!
tell bo ill just change the day im gonna pop up to visit. hows friday for him? or is he a chicken as well as a pussy

westi ·

well it was yet another long night as per usual.
worth it you will agree, well maybe.
did some minor jet changes to get us started after the last dyno run.
with were alittle fat down low and lean up top,
but we cracked 172 atw i was devistated, then we realized that it was still set in kilo watts.wooofuckin hoo.
230.1 rwhp.holy crap batman.stone cold engine and oil temps the heads were only just reading on the gauge.
then we spent the rest of the night trying to get it leaner down low and fatter up top.
all the changes resulted in power drops,so we went back to my first setting on a warmish engine which is 215.3 hp,
i think we might be at the end of the fuels capabilities after all it is only 100 octane.

but after all that it might be the limits of the carbies/venturies,we are stumped and over the moon all at the same time.
i will post up the dyno sheets tomorrow.as we are pretty tierd and need some sleep if we are going to take her out to the track tommorrow night.
we will have to do some checks before i am confident enough to tackle the track.i think i am going to have to take a few pairs of undies out with me.me thinks i might soil a few.

Eeyore Freak ·

wow!!! could eeyore do that??!!!!!!! lol

Mick058 ·

yeehaa Westi - When you hitting the track, might try and make it to watch.

maybe tonight ,maybe next wednesday.
i have heaps on at the moment and i realy want to do some checks over everything,so it realy depens on time.god i wish i could buy some(time),i bet it wuldn't come cheap.

mactaylor ·

why not bore the 48's to 51.5 for a try talk to the old school rotary boys.

westi ·

they are already 51.5's,they were done before we put them on the car the first time.i couldn't help my self.
as for hp per cube around 1.5 to 1.6 i would imagine.you can work out the maths,i am to lazy for all that.

thanks for all your nice comments.it is only a power figure from a machine that does the maths as best as it can.the mph over the quater is what i am concerned about.
it has gone from 198hp to 209 to 230 i am realy only looking at the gains that we make not the power figure of the dyno.
we haven't done any ignition timing testing i ,or played around with the cam timing yet either.
any how thanks for all your kind words people it keeps us going.

555bug ·

Thats a pretty hefty number from a beetle engine at 1.64 hp / cube 🙂 i had a super suped up civic running 12:1 with mugan bits everywhere and it made a little over 130hp at the wheels from a 1.6 or 1.3 hp cube lol A current zx10 that really is about as cutting edge an engine you will find 1000cc 182hp @ 12k is making 3hp cube!! my VTR1000 only makes 1.8hp per cube.

I'm just ratteling off numbers as some people may not understand what a great result this is, hell I'm going for an ej20t subaru and I will need to modify it to get a better result 🙂

Congrats to all involved, roll on Warwick

mactaylor ·

bugger so it is spend lots or just be happy top job westi!

westi ·

man i am over the moon.i will leave this until something breaks.touch wood.
i will keep trying things with the tune and play around with cam timing to try to improve the torque curve. but that's about it.
it is time to have some fun.

fullnoise ·

Westi,

When your car is being towed around town please put a cover over it. I'm sick of people phoning me to tell me they've just seen and amazing black VW with no engine lid on a truck or a trailer.

I look forward to kicking your backside at Warwick (With the appropriate bracket racing headstart).

Regards CT

matberry ·

Great numbers Brad, good luck on the track, just keeo it together for U NO WHEN :-)

Dasdubber ·

Awesome stuff Brad, can't wait to see it at Warwick!
Al

westi ·

thanks guys.
i am going to start practicing my starts on the weekend, see if we can get used to the car after so long of not driving it.

appropriate bracket racing headstarts will be a killer.hey CT what about some old scholl heads up,if i do a realy bad start i always have that little blue button to help me out.go baby go.

if i remember i will take some vid's on the weekend.

fullnoise ·

If I had the blue button it would be tempting me on every run.

After my effort at Portland I wouldn't need it. I'm already the break-out king. 4 out of 4 I think it was.

Your car will be like a supermodel on a cocktail of steroids, speed and red bull due to it's low weight and amazing horsepower. I can't wait to see it go (past me).

Great work.

CYA CT

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Would be an intersting heads up between your car and Troy's Type 3. Light weight with great power N/A vs turbo efi with just under 1200kg's to move!!

Warwick this year will be better than ever!!

westi ·

as long as you break out worse than me, all is good.
let see if you can top the last effort with 5 from 5 if that's even possible ,

yeh should be good fun to see how she go's.i can wait to have some fun with all the vw boys from qld.
n/a all the way.
it should give us all something to talk about in the afternoons over some beers.

does anyone know how many k's the cruz to the city is on the saturday at warwick.i want to take her in but she doesn't carry much fuel anymore.
i didn't get the chance to take her for a run today i had to much on.
i am not leaving myself much time before wednesday night but who cares, she'll be right.

heaps of petrol stations on the way anyhow's...............👍

byronmcmanus59 ·

come a long way since i last saw this beast. credit to you guys.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

you race tonight Westi?? If so spill the beans......

westi ·

enough beans have been spilt already.
as barry manilo once sang.ow what a night.

well we have some good news and some bad.
i will give you the good first.
1.the car takes of straight.yeh
2.the car ran 12.5 straight of the trailer, but .there is always a but in everything lately.it only ran 97mph.which was fine because i was onlt half peddling it .
3.the car ran a 12.1 at 105mph,which was shit because i gave it everything.but

here comes the bad and good news.the dizzy was as loose as a goose which made it ping real bad ,this is why the mph was down this was a good thing because it helped to explain what was wrong, but.
it crack all four barrells and some how managed to munch a lift.yeh ,motor is out stripped and tommorrow will be clean and further inspected.
parts will be ordered and back together she will go for warwick.
f---ckin c---t of a thing.
and on it goes.again and again.

hellbugged ·

Damn!

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Mate i'm sorry to hear that. I feel your pain. so close yet again so far. hopefully there is isn't too much damage.

What cam do you need/have?

Bugger!

That blows - sign of things to come though!! You'll get some great times out of her.

1303Steve ·

Hi

That's a real shame, I hope you can get it going for Warwick without to many late nights.

Steve

westi ·

i have rang and booked a constent supply of v's and red bull said they would be readily available from any corner shop if needed.so sleep won't be the problem.
it's parts and machining time that will be the killer.
thanks for the offer dave i might need to talk to you alittle later so if you could pm me your number i will give you a buzz.

thanks guy's for the support.but considering what happened i am so not fased anymore about the little things that let us down, simply because we haven't made the same mistake twice and we keep getting more and more out of this poor engine everytime.
so bring on the charge for warwick.i'm excited.

So guess what I am doing tomorrow??? One engine apart, reclean everything and assemble with barrell spacers this time!!

so on saturday we had nothing to do.three blokes bored.
so we pimped out the trailer.and tow vehicle.
trailer had its old shitty steel bent gaurds removed.new black plastic ones were fitted.new trailer hitch with brake master so we did a brake conversion at the same time .made an ali storage box for the front so that we are not caring fuel in the car anymore,i was never to happy about smoking with a 100ltrs in the back, but it never stoped me either.
new lights and wiring front to back.

More like Pink & Pimp MY Rides . Hope that trailer is painted the colour ? .
Also hope those heads haven't went soft ( Been to hot )

westi ·

nah the heads should be ok.i guess we will find out.fingers crossed.
the car has never realy gotten hot,the highest it has seen head temps wise was 340 f,which i think is about norm.from what i have been told.the head temps usually sit around 220 to 260 f .the main probelm with the heads i think was the guy porting them,i don't think he know's when enough is enough.
as for the trailer they were out of pink, but the did have madjenta in stock.lol
i will not post any pic's of the trailer i will keep you all wondering .it is loverly.

Stanley ·

I picture madjenta lovehearts......😍

Eeyore Freak ·

Ive seen it!! Its hot stuff!
I forgot to say good luck for this weekend, and i hope you dont break anything! Again!
oh, and tell the baboon that he has to msg me his number so i can let him know when my band is playing!

Dasdubber ·

I bet you're getting about as much sleep as me thsi week westi....hope it all comes together okay and you can have an "event-free" event this weekend!
Al

westi ·

me to
2 am finish last night.and proberly later tonight as i only got the heads sorted at about 1.30am.
i still have to lap them in set pressures and assemble and recheck geometre.i am still not terribly happy about the heads and will be checking them after we return back to sydney,if all goes well.hardness testing wise they shaped up ok.
tonights going to be a doosy.
i want to get some customers cars done so we can come back to a clean shop when we return from warwick.
al we can always catch up on sleep when we die.no rest for the wicked.

STOCK ·

my junka infused lack of sleep
is turning me into an arsehole
i think im gunna stab someone @ work
oh yeh speaking of lack of sleep
i'll se ya tonight brad😬😬😬

westi ·

car and trailer are packed going home now to do the bags, and off we go.
we are coming up in the AM tommorrow,we know it's alittle eary but we could all do with the brake.i look forward to catching up with you all up there.
good luck to those who are still building and a safe drive to all.
see yaz at warwick.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Mate looked sensational and was a shame to make the final of the top 8 only to have to pull out with some minor engine drama's.

Had a great weekend with the Westside boys and a big thanks from Troy and myself for helping out whenever the neeed arose.

Cheers 👍

Dasdubber ·

Congrats on making it up here and making some good passes guys - good to catch up for a chat as always. Sorry to hear about the late dramas......happy with the peformance otherwise?
Al

westi ·

performance of the car as in how it takes of and drives. yes.
performance of the engine was good enough.
we had expected some small issues may arise but we were hoping for it to atleast make it until the end.
we didn't get to use all the beans that we have had but i think i will now have a bit of time to sort the heads out and have a good look over the carbies.
it was a good fun weekend, but it is a long way to drive to then try and sort out engine issues.but to make the finall with an uncomplete package was awsome.
i will be taking my time to get her ready for the next trip out.

what a blast of a weekend.

go the junka.
i think we might even doll her up abit after seeing pete's loverly prep'd car.how good does it look.

i will be going through the shop for a big clean up,so i will have some stuff to sell so that we can fix up the junka.
i have a turbo or two,a couple super chargers and lot's of other little goodies.look out for it in the parts for sale section,it will be called the save westi's junka sale.

Stanley ·

Great to meet you and the boys westi and to finally have a look over the junka and let me say it looks even better in the flesh.
Good to see after your recent dramas that you got some good runs in too....👍

westi ·

and so did you stanley .pb.way to go.woohooo.
not to shabby for a baby turbo.looks like you had heaps of fun as did i and the gang.
next year will be a cracker.
portland first.who's coming.maybe we should organize a car carrier.

westi ·

still haven't pulled her of the trailer yet,it's on the to do list though.
i have started doing some research for some of my head stuff.retainers and clips.ls1 parts seem to be the go so far.
while it's apart i might also modifiy the block to go full roller.we will have to see how the aussy dollar goes as i have rego due and not alot of mulla to spend.

anyhow i will keep you all posted.

Dasdubber ·

westi wrote:portland first.who's coming.maybe we should organize a car carrier.

Yeah I am keen to go to Portland (whether it be with Rod's rebuilt 1916 that siezed at warwick, or my turbo engine (not sure if that will be ready due to $$))....I seriously think us "northerners" need to look into a car carrier as I'd love to go but don't think I could take so long off work to do the drive and pull a trailer. I guess there is a bit of time to sort that out, but these things come around quickly!
Al

matberry ·

mmmm Portland, will be here before you know it.

Brad get that JUNKA off the trailer and start getting those heads sorted Westi.

Just to hijack....I wonder how much a car carrier would be, ie. how many cars to make it viable.???

I'd be in if the price was right...

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

mmm car carrier does sound tempting plus I also couldn't get that much time off or afford the $$ to drive down and back plus compete and accomodation.

Westi you going to go down the route that Henry was talking about with retainers??

byronmcmanus59 ·

def do anything to come to Portland 😀

as craig said not long ago the format has changed for the w.e next year..
the dubs will be running against a normal drag lineup aka all the v8 guys,
plus a street drag meet on the Friday night..

and suprising as it may seem alot of the local guys in toranas etc pushing
just into the 6's are shitting themselves at the possibility of getting their
asses handed to them by a bug.

westi ·

i will make some calls today about the car carries.
as for the vavle stuff ,it will all be changed to 10' valve locks and titanium retainers.ouch that word hurts.titanium always costs .

STOCK ·

AS YOU'VE ALWAYS SAID BRADLEY
BUY , BUY , BUY ITS ONLY MONEY
PLUS , BOBBI WILL NEVER KNOW,
😂😂

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Maybe you should employ Trent's Mum to make you some extra cash on the side👍😂

Eeyore Freak ·

You better come down to watch my band Stock! (not just my sister) Her boyfriends not gonna be there!!! She'll need company when im on stage!

STOCK ·

I THINK BEAU , BRAD & ME WILL ALL BE FIGHTING FOR THAT POSITION😂😂😂

Eeyore Freak ·

Sooooooooo
Does that mean ur all coming???
I would prefer you to be coming to watch my band play, not just to keep my sister company! But ill take what i can get, i guess!
The bands name is "Blue Datura" by the way. And we r playing at the SHOOTOUT!

westi ·

hi all ,i hope all is well for all.
i am back on earth and still alive.
i have been silly busy and trying to save some money for the junka,i see the fat controller has been talking it up as always(stoko).tool.
yes i have puled it down and had a look.all was semi normal.bottm end was great.top end not so great,
but as per normal i have gone alittle left feild.
i had bought some roller lifters some time ago .so i bought a cam .roller.280'@ 50' 438 total @ cam.
got some custom made throttle bodies made, quad 62s.
and bought a big oil pump.4 stage.
computer autronic sm4.
still have to buy pump & injectors, sensors
ooh and i started to buy some bits to make a new front end (suspension wise)
but that will be after i get her back on the track ,the front end is just a weight thing, nothing that has to be done stright away.
the shock's and springs are light weight speed way stuff, they look cool.
any how i will take some pic's soon to show how i do the roller stuff.
portland who know's it would be nice, but i am sick of baked beans on toast i need a real meal.maybe i should spend some money on food rather than parts i don't realy need, yeh right.
will talk soon.
cya.

dangerous ·

Nothing wrong with beans on toast! (makes bottom-burp sound)

Best way for a guy to afford his habit.....dont know what the woman thinks about it.
But you liked the Volksies BEFORE she was around,
and you will still like them long AFTER she is gone.

Roller sounds good, how to keep it together? New head castings?

westi ·

too true.

but thats the easy way out.i have spent to many hours on those damn ports i can't give up now.alttle weld here alittle weld there.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Good to see you out and about Westi!!

westi ·

i don't know if the pic is good enough for you to read what's on the new stinger.anyhow.

i stiil haven't done the block yet ,heads first.new valves and stuff.
then back onto the fabricating, sheet metal manifolds, dry sump tank, mount new fuel pump, yada yada.
i will try to let actions speak louder than words.and i will keep you all we informed.

mactaylor ·

good stuff westi are you heading down to portland?

westi ·

depends on how much time and money i can afford to through at it,you always have more of one than the other.
but it would be nice to get her back out again.
hopefully this time i won't hand over the win due to breakages.lol.
i want a re- match with dangerous, but i think i should be careful off what i wish for,the muffen man is a machine, big fan.

Stanley ·

pagey , dangerous ,rod , troy , brendan etc
you guys arent going are you ???
what about matt & the hillbilly boys??

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Dangerous not sure but Pete and Rod will be saving the $$ and putting it towards getting the blue car sorted with new engine and Pete wants to do some more stuff to his car as well.

Troy won't be going as he needs the cash to get his heap sorted and running properly. I am about to change jobs so time off is highly unlikely.

As for Matt, Crazy Col and crew not sure either. I'm sure they'll see this and speak up though....

matberry ·

well we gotta wimp out too. Basically down to $$ or lack of 🙁🙁🙁. Really wanted to go so will be saving for next year. There is still plenty I want/need to do to the hillbilly racer.

dangerous ·

I'll be there.

As long as Stocko keeps his mankini at home!

I'm hanging to see this and the other awesome volksies out there at Warrick this year!! As soon as I know the definate date airfares will be booked to Sydney and car hire organised for the drive up with my son....

dangerous ·

Reub, it is a 8 or 9 hour drive from Sydney.
You'd be better to go to Brisbane or GC...3 to 4 hours drive.

Stanley ·

Shame so many 'players' will miss Portland.
I'd come down with you Dave, but i'd worry my pass wouldn't let me into work and my locker would be cleaned out.
Damn economy

I'll see ya this arvo instead.

reub ·

Hmm...thanks Dave.
The deal with my wife and daughter was we'd head to Sydney together, venture to Warrick then go back to Sydney and have a bit of 'family time'... I could always head to Brissie, drive down, and then continue on to Sydney from there. Either way I'm already hanging to be there this year...

STOCK ·

REUB
COME ON MATE,
ITS NOT THAT FAR FROM DARWIN TO WARICK
TO BRING THE VWRX OVER 😂😂😂

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Reub mate bring the car. A lot of us Brissy boys would love to see it in the flesh after what you have done to it since buying it.

Last time i saw in the flesh it was undercoat grey with a very rough looking roof and no interior!!

still haven't worked on my car yet, same old same old.too much to do and not enough hours in the day.although it's better to be to busy ,than twiddling your thumbs waiting for the money come in.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Now now you 2 how about you kiss and make up😀😀😀😀😀

westi ·

i haven't been online to much of late.just been to busy and not motivated.
when you have so much to do it sometimes seams alittle daunting.
yes dave, they are for the junka.i like throwing in little bit's and peices ,keeps you on your toe's.

after a long break it is proberly time to get motivated again.
i have so much to do it is quiet hard to work out were to start.i have so many unfinished things that all need lots of time and patients.
the heads are finally done,
new valve's,springs retainers and spring keepers.
there is such a big difference from were they were to were they are at now.
the heads were as we thought in good hands before ,but after some last minute checking before we went to warwick,we realize that the trust had been misplaced.we were dissapionted as it was as still is a good friend that had volunteered to do the job.and it wasn't for free.
heads are pretty much the same as before ,except all the valves are seated and the same hight's and valves are equal lenghts and the seating pressures have been lifted to 3 digits rather than 2.
any how enough of the boring stuff.i will post up some pic's,as we will be doing alot over the next few week's with mick's and hopefully mine.i will have heaps of pic,s and as per usuall if you have any questions or imput feel free.

dissy

new throttle body trumpets

new valve springs,

i think i have already posted up the cam and oil pump.the rest is all fab work.
firstly i would like to finsh of the inlet manifolds.so that's the goal for this week.

dangerous ·

Mmmmm.
Thanks for the update.

Roller will test even the best springs.
Then the head casting.

I always put priority on jobs that
stop the car from driving,(if not done).

Appearance jobs come last (or never... in my case).

No point having a spiffy car that does not drive.

What size are those t'bodies?

Salubrious welding there dude.

matberry ·

Holy Crap Batman, them be big throttle bodies. Awesome stuff Westi, what size are they? Have you photoshopped that maccas drink to make em HUGE😂😂

westi ·

totally agree about the springs and head casting, but with seating pressure being as bad as it was ,50 lowest to 68 ft the highest ,
i thought these heads deserved one more run with big lift .
i don't want to admit defeat,i want to run a desent time and run the mph that i think it is capable off, then drive it back on the trailer after the meeting is over.

the time will come.sooner or later.

trumpets are 115mm down to the throttle size 62mm,yes yes yes ,they might be to big,but who really knows until you try.the manifolds will tapper, from the top of the stack. 115mm down to the port 44mm all over about 15 inches.

i even think that i have gone to far this time, but lets wait and see.

e85 or methonal is the next question, the comp has come up alittle and i am not to confident of the pump gas anymore.

and yes matt, that is only a small maca's cup and an incredibly big mouse pad.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Noice mate. Very Noice. What brand are the TB's if you don't mind me asking or did you get them made up??

westi ·

the old seat up with valves was causing valve float.
so i found something of interest for those that don't know howbad it is,

yes big fella they were custom built for me by efi hardware
not cheap though.and wether it will be to big or not.who knows but can be fixed either way.

hellbugged ·

cool video..........spring pressures in double digits 🙅👎🙁......

what pressures are you aiming for, both over the nose and seated now with those triples?

westi ·

i can't give away all my secrets.
210-215seat
on d nose440-450.

matberry ·

Holy crap, that should do it, s/s or titanium valves?

westi ·

s/s .

hellbugged ·

Jeff ran 650pds on the nose before he was happy

matberry ·

hellbugged wrote:Jeff ran 650pds on the nose before he was happy
Jeff's on drugs

hellbugged ·

would appear that way.........BUT that's what they worked their way up to, before he saw the results of valve float fade and stop..........big "chevy" springs with seats welded and bottom 1/3 of spring "encapsulated"...........KB-435 cam so lift at valve was well over 0.600"and would hit 9000rpm......... the guy that did his race heads was amazed at just how much spring pressure was needed for the VW as opposed to "others", even tho they were also race only preparations.

even my piddly little motor has close to 300pds on the nose

dangerous ·

I run 260 seat and 620 nose pressure with .690" on current combo.(shimmed to .040" from bind).
Ti valve and 8400 limiter....could sneak it up to 8600 this year but I hate adjusting valves.
Some believe the safe limit for flat tappet wear is about 430 to 450 lbs over the nose,
but this is dependant on rocker ratio...I used 430 on my own flat tappet in the blower engine.
Bergs (roller) used 500 nose pressure,
and CB's Pat claim to use 500 no probs...with flat tappet...
everything needs o be spot on if that is the case.

westi ·

i wouldn't have thought your seatup needed that much on the nose ,i guess alittle over what you need is better than alittle under,
i did do some home work and asked some questions.even don (cam supplier)reconed start at 210.

my set up is 210-215 un shimmed i thought it would be a good starting point .i'll give it a a lash.

mines only 650' lift this time around.left it up to the duration to sort it self out.

matberry ·

I cant remember all the numbers, but 190 and 390 ring a bell. Had 595 lift and saw over 9000 rpm a few times altho anything over 8500 was never necessary. I never experienced any valve float or head problems with those pressures.... Shows to go ... hey

westi ·

9000 ,wow.
i love the sound off an engine at 9.
i am simply gona rev it till it stops making power.works for me.

matberry ·

I love the sound of an aircooled volksy at anything over 8. One thing my old dragcar was good for was that it was always a clean revvin machine.

Nothin like it😀

Keep up the good work, I'm sure this thing's gonna haul.

Aussieveedubbers IS like a porn site,(straight),

and tucked down low on the home page is the quivalent of Gay Porn.

They call it "Non VW Engine Conversions".

What's worse is, I felt a little curious,
and when I looked,
Some of my friends were seen in there!

NNNNNOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

Hi

There should be another forum called "people who think they have a VW motor in their car but in fact have a whole lot of after market parts resembling a VW motor"

Steve

dangerous ·

Ouch Stevey!!

Remember humor?
I thought it was funny anyhow.

1303Steve ·

Hi Dave

Sorry, I thought what I said was funny, I guess it doesn't always come across that way when your typing words, it was meant to read in a humorous way.

What you say is so true....in a funny kinda way of course...hahaha

matberry ·

True ... but resembling a vw motor is close enough when they are roughly 30 - 70 years old.

All these dark siders are just making the real dubs worth more $$$😁

trickysimon ·

I'm kinda loving the water pumper conversion rate of buses!! If they can ask for 20K with a 2.2L suby slug then I will ask for 30K with 27.L torque monster LOL.

Westi whats the latest on the Junka??(back on topic now...)

Cool springless valves, would be a fantastic improvement for all you piston people.👍

manifolds are nearly done.
where's the fat controller when you need him i have heaps of shit to do and not enough time to do it.
any how i started with a 30 degree bend, made a tappered dolly and of i went.
once i had finished i tapped it altogether for a little testing on the flow bench.it was interesting.
i don't want to bore you with the details so i will show you some pic's.

with the last picture ,i don't know why everyone puts 50 cent's next to there ports ,so i figured it must be for good luck or to make a wish.so i wished for good luck.

You know if here is anyting I can do to make things happen, let me know.

westi ·

westi ·

the 3 on the side are for oil return.
and the 2 at the top just under the filler cap are rocker cover breathers.
1 on the side at the bottom is oil pick up.
and the big barstard on the very bottom is for draining the oil out.

NuZo ·

HAHAHA as if anyone didnt thing this when they saw it

Chief ·

I thought you said you were only going to take a little bit off the side???

I'd hate to see alot!🤪

westi ·

i haven.t finished yet,i still have to lighten it.lol

20bkombi ·

Nice work Westi,

Is the flat connecting bar just to stop the lifters turning?

With this mod, are you planing 2 or 4 tubes all up, o'ring or gasket? That would have to be the best idea for vws ive seen, no more oil leaks.😀

Boostn ·

Love the lifter idea westi !!!
Get it finished and I might have to get you to do one for me.
Shame about the front, biatch!!

I can do you a flip top front in GRP or Carbon. The mould I have is a stock 1300 bug not like yours though.
I also have stock 1300 fenders (front & rear) and bonnet and W deck.

westi ·

stop it guy's i don't need any more idea's.please.i don't need any incouragement.i am already as mad as the mad hatter with a screw loose.but,

thats it carbon everything.
if i do a carbon front i may as well do the doors and gaurds.i have moulds for everything.what kinda money am i up for.i am keen as.
you realy got me thinking know.
as for the pushrod tubes,i will be using the ones i used before.once i have finish the machining i will make a cover plate that they will sit in.
