This car has an interesting history.
It was raced from 1970 until it was sold in 1982.
Then it was raced again from 1982 in another guise,
in which it also set track and national records as a normally aspirated 2180cc combo.
until about 1986 when Surfers drag strip closed. 11.90@109mph was its best at the 1984 Nationals at Surfers International Raceway.
When I helped organise the first Jamboree in 1991, I had approached a number of current and past VW racers and THIS owner agreed that it was time to run his car again.
So a full rebuild was undertaken.
Not sure when it was LAST raced, but prob 1996 or 1997
with a best of 11.29@119 with a 2332cc engine with autocraft heads and 51mm IDA's.
It was sold in pieces about 5 years ago, and this is where I picked it up yesterday.

This car is formerly Peter Keegan's "Camel Filter" Bug from the '70s.
It ran a best of 10.26@135mph,
and ran as fast as 140mph when Peter was experimenting with fuel injection.
As you can see it was originally a 'factory sun roof' car
and is around a '59 or '60 model as far as I can tell.
(Peteoriginally raced with a split-cased tranny!)
Peter bought the car in the late 60's as a crash victim
and fixed it up for its first race in 1970.
The top was chopped in 1972 and it immediately went into the 10's
with the new 2180cc engine, that by then had four 1.75" SU carbs.
This was the first VW bug in the world to run in the 10 sec zone
(as far as my research can confirm)

Nice. Will interesting to watch the comeback..............
dangerous ·
Slots in the fire wall to clear the linkage arms that were on the back of the blower :
Fuel tank under the rear guard:
This is the sunroof.
The teaser photos at the beginning were of the outside corner of the factory steel deflector lip,
and the piece inside showing where the opening was extended as a part of the roof chop that was performed way back.
When a roof chop is performed,
the roof needs to be extended unless you want to lay back the windscreen angle.
Back in the days of "Gassers" the windscreen angle had to remain standard, and maximum roof chop was 4"...this one is around 3.75" I think.
dangerous ·
The car is in great shape being that it has been garaged and off the road since the 1960's when it was less than 10 years old.
dangerous ·
It is interesting that some of the body features are unique.
The front of the bonnet is at equal height as the front apron.
Most Volksies have this area lower than the bonnet.
Also the original front guards(now on Rod Richardson's Black&Red 'chop',
are curved where the running board would have met with it.
Most have a flat section at that point. Perhaps a non genuine pair of guards were on the car at repair time.
I will ring Peter later in the week to quiz him about some of these interesting idiosyncrasies.

what happened to the floor pan
me n Boris had talked about buying the car from Darryl a few years back but he wanted to many dollars for it
i think it raced at one of the Jamborees a few yearsago after 97 as i spoke to Darryl while he was in the staging lanes at Willowbank might of even been at a winter nats event but only a few years ago for sure
Have you told the old grey fox yet that the car is in safe hands once again ???

I think it is a reflection you can see.
There are a couple of bumps and dents about but no biggies.
You can see some of the original repairs here and there
from when Peter rescued the car in the 60's.
It is amazing to see a car that is so free of rust in the normal areas.
vw54 ·
So did you tell the Old Grey Fox ????
dangerous ·
No have not spoken to Pete yet.
Would be nice to see him run down the strip again.
I am sure I can come up with an engine for the car, and will sus out Darrell to see if he still has the pan.

Peter Michael Keegan
1943 -
Drag Racing Champion
A
Image Descriptions:
A - 1978 Summernationals
Peter Michael Keegan was born in Orange on 22 December 1943, and as a young lad displayed a keen interest in all forms of motor racing. After competing for some years at local level, Peter decided to step up to higher competition and in early 1970 he began racing at Castlereagh International Dragway.
By May 1970 he had set a new National Best Gas time and speed record at 12.69 seconds and 118mph for the quarter mile distance. In June 1970 he had reached 124.65 mph and became the first driver to attain a speed of over 120mph in Australia.
In May 1971 Peter set a new gas class Australian record of 11.35 seconds at 123.45mph that made his VW the fastest sedan of any size in Australia and the fastest four-cylinder car in the world.
In October 1972, with a new motor fitted to the VW, Peter turned in a time of 10.82 seconds at 126.8mph to be the first four-cylinder car under 11 seconds anywhere in the world. In December of the same year he recorded 10.8 seconds and reduced this to 10.69 seconds in May 1973. He further reduced this in 1974 to 10.5 seconds.
His success continued in November 1975 when he won the Australian Drag Racing Final with a new record of 10.41 seconds. In May 1976 he lowered his own record to 10.29 seconds at a speed of 132mph.
From 1977 to 1981 Peter continued to set track records in various Australian states and in New Zealand, before retiring to concentrate on his business in Orange.

squizy wrote:Great find, great project, and a great read. Are you going bring back the Camel colours?
You could do the colours but if you did the name/logo, beside TM issues, the car couldn't be featured in the electronic or print press due to cigarette advertsing laws (there are only a few big $ exceptions).

When Peter finished with the Camel Filter Sponsorship,
the car remained with those colours and palm trees
but reverted to his name on the door.
I think he then ran in a heavier class (CC/G?) but still set records as late as 1982.
Not sure yet what we will dream up for this car.
Unfortunately the promoters of the nostagia series did not allow Peter and Rod
to run their car nostagia Gasser at their event,
even though carbureted cars were some of the first Gassers in Australian drag racing.
Eg Yo-Yo and Ken Virgin.

I had to race Daryl in this car at Operation drag(old surfer's raceway) a few years back in my kombi at one of the Action days they held there. Man it was so loud that I couldn't even hear or feel my car running!! He was nice enough to give me a head start then came past and picked up the front wheels in 2nd gear!!! Smart Ass.
If my memory serves me correctly Jamboree 2000 I also ran and he had a run just before me and pulled a nice big burnout then staged and went for a big RPM launch and broke an axle. My last sighting of the car till these pics.
Not sure what Daryl is doing now as he sold the business to Kurt and Gunther and they are still running it as Volks Mod.
Also they are a sponsor for the upcoming DYNO MANIA!!!
Are you coming???? Let me know or miss out!!

That's because they haven't run the Vintage Gasser class at any event yet. They would have been trying to run in Gas, like CBB and LMS. To get into that field they would need to be typically sub 10 second runners.
It's confusing with the class designations being so similar.
Once there is enough cars to run the Vintage Gasser class at an event Gavin has assured me that VW (if complying with the class rules, eg negative rake, signwriting, door trims etc) will be acceptable.

Hi
I saw this car run at Castlereagh a few times, it was inspiring. If you can't decide on a colour scheme, what about 1/2 & 1/2, one side Volksmod and the other Camel. It must have given the V8s and 6s the shits at the time. No wonder later on they rewrote the rule book to ban VWs. Cars had to have a 6 or 8 cylinder motor.

The First 10sec pass by a VW in the world was on Sat the 16th and 17th of September 1972.
This WAS at Castlereigh.
This was at the track one week before the Australian Nationals(at Castlereigh..no Surfers!) in the 23/24th of September.

Hey Ross.
I dont believe it!
Great to see you here.
Anyone here heard of Spike Jones, used to run an SPG 2180 in the 70's, I think in a light rail.
I met him the other day at the local servo with his much modified 924. Wow what a character.
Matt
RossPreen ·
Thanks Dave,
I'd love to go to Warwick in October, but I have a date with the California HotRod Reunion at Bakersfield then, but I'll keep it in mind.
Matt Berry!!!! I thought you disapeared off the face of the earth, how are you mate? You see once these Bugs bite your infected for life, and no matter how hard you try, you just keep comeing back.
Spike Jones, yep, remember him well, he had a really light Dragster, a real nice guy, I used to race against him in the 70's, I think he came out of hill climbing to Drag Racing. Spike had some different ideas and was a real tough competitor.
Now can someone please take pitty on me and tell me how the restoration is going.😏
Regards Ross.
dangerous ·
Currently the restoration is in a "hold Pattern",
until we can source a/the pan.
I still have a few of Peter's hand built parts from when I had his hill climb car,
like the sump, we found the front wheels and parts of the front axle, chute and mount, rear apron, engine and tranny braces etc,
and various engine parts that will make the engine look authentic.
Henry still has the blower and my manifold,
and Peter has hinted that the four 1.75" SU's and wier system may be available when we get close.
I still have a magneto, and the Wade cam among other parts, like rockers, barrels and clutch and flywheel.
I can have an engine and tranny together in no time flat,
so once we get a good pan and cage, the rest will happen fairly quickly.
Rod who owns the car has decided to go the "Camel" theme,
but is still undecided who might take on the paint work in the original style.
RossPreen ·
Thanks Dave,
It's great to hear that it's still a goer. I'm glad to hear that your going with the Camel theme.
Bob Dunn did the original paint work, maybe it would be worth contacting him as he is still a big fan, and I heard a rumor that he may be going to restore or recreate the AA/FA, so this project might get him going again.
Thanks again mate, I will watch with great interest.
Regards Ross.

I am pretty sure the Dunlop bridge was still there, (?),

Both Pagey and Yates were in the grass at the other end.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Yes I did make the first return road and beat Darryl back to the tower LOL.
bridge was gone by this stage and they moved the staging area forward by about 50-60 metres. where you lined up you could see the remnants of the old pre stage area with the 2 patches of rubber on either side of the track.

Wow this is so sad, I remember seeing this car for the first time a couple of days before the Jamboree back in 01 on the back of a trailer on the goldcoast. Was blown away after i started looking over it and found it had the orginal front supension setup in it, Do you still have at this Dave or was it lost when you got the car? This car is just as important as any of the US gassers!
dangerous ·
When Darrel /Volksmod rebuilt this car in 1990/1991 for the first Jamboree,
the original Camel/Keegan tube axle was replaced with a much safer chromoly front tube axle, and motor cycle coilovers.
This front suspesion is apparently cruising around in a hotrod now days.
We have come to the conclusion that the original pan is long gone,
as is the pan that Darrel used for the 90's rebuild.
I have been able to source the majority of the 1970's front suspension components,
that keegan used in his original version,
including Anglia/Prefect drums,
and the 12" rims with 125 michelins that were used in the 1970s.
We also have the original 'chute, engine bracing, rear apron('sand' colour from desert "camel" signage),
among many other small tit bits.
The owner is unlocking some funds from his many other projects to give this project a good push in 2011.
I will take some pics soon of the pile of parts.

Great shots - the more the better!! Certainly helps us to narrow down some of the fine details of the car when it was in its Camel days - there has been a lot of magnifying glass time spent on the photos and lots of views of the youtube link trying to ascertain some details 🙂
If okay with Peter, Ross (and Ross's wife), the graphic designer/illustrator that does a lot of work for us is happy to take on the recreation of the old school shirts. Obviously we wouldn't intend to sell them, moreso make available to those involved with the car (past incarnation or present restoration).
Anyway, that issue aside we have rebuilt a lot of the rear end sheetmetal that was cut away in a later period so the original rear apron can be fitted. Some more sympathetic panel smoothing to continue this coming week before primer goes on. Rear decklid with scoop is being recreated currently as well.

You don't happen to remember what steering box pete used in that car?
I asked but he could not quite remember, he was thinking some kind of Austin.
The stubs and stuff were all Anglia as far as I can tell, which pete confirmed.
What types of cars did you race in the "old days"?
Looks like a red motor with tripple webers on that one!

Hi all,
Just a quick post to explain the absence of those great Keegan/Preen NZ tour photos.
We are just working on clearing the use of them with the photographer before we get them back up .
They came to us second hand and we just want to do the right thing . Apologies to the chap who posted them .
Car is going well with body prep work almost done. Thanks to the whole team and in particular Ross who is a great source of info and was actually there.
Pete Keegan has also had input on the resto.
That last photo Ross posted is AMAZING .
Get back to you soon .
Please PM me any questions
Thanks. Rod.
Peter Leonard ·
dave, flick me a PM with your email 🙂
RossPreen ·
Hi Dave.
Sorry I can't help with the steering box either. The pitman arm may give a clue, or maybe the mounting holes will tell a story, it may be an Anglia.
Knowing Peter, what ever it was it would have been LIGHT.
As far as what we raced, if you send me an email ( cacklecar@gmail.com ) I'll send you some photos, I don't think it's right to hijack this great thread with non Camel Car stuff
Ross.

You've heard?...... The voice of experience I reckon.... 😂
Grey Ghost ·
Did you hear that Camel was the only cigarette company that had a picture of the factory on the packet.
SuperOwen ·
Will the car be able to be painted in it's original camel signage with the ciggie laws these days?
Camel toe racing?
Sides ·
Heh heh, yeah... just have 'toe' either smaller or lighter coloured, or perhaps made up from Palm trees ???
😂
1303Steve ·
Hi
Used to smoke in those days, I smoked Camels because they sponsored a VW, know one ever bludged cigarettes of me.
Steve
RAZ34 ·
Camel Toe Racing is owned by George Poteet in the US.
We will soon see if I can run Camel Filter signage, stay tuned.
silver ·
In historical racing a car can use the livery it had during its competitive era.. however this car will not be in historical racing events or will it??? 😁
Dasdubber ·
Getting there....

Nice Al.... Real nice.
Dasdubber ·
Thanks mate, we are getting towards the end of our initial involvement with the resurrection of the Camel car now. Although not exactly era-correct, the base/clear system used will help with the longevity of this piece of history. We discussed the base/clear vs acrylic with Rod and decided in the end to go this way - it will also provide a more resilient surface during the mechanical rebuild which potentially could take quite some time. This way when the car comes back to us for the graphics, I just have to buzz it back and start on the desert-scene! (fortunately the original apron provides a perfect sample for colour matching after a light buff).
Cheers

Mate that looks incredible! Gee i'd love to have a car painted by you guys one day!
Dak-A-Tak ·
Al , Please Ring Rod , looks very good in paint .
Dasdubber ·
Shall do Pete.
Dasdubber ·
After a slight oversight on my behalf (was going from a black and white photo from the rear which suggested the silver to white fade at the rear was around the back window).....a colour photo revealed obviously I was wrong 🙂
No harm done, back in the booth and rectified today so the silver goes all the way down to the decklid.
Cheers

Aussie ·
Awesome work again Al !! Will be interesting to see how you do the graphics. When are you guys trying to get the car finished?
Dasdubber ·
The car will leave our workshop next week without graphics....once Dave, Rod and Pete are done on the mechanical/reassembly work, it will come back to the workshop for the yellow/orange detailing etc.
vassy66T1 ·
Nice looking silver ... all the way down or not 😉

Lovely work Al....

Well , Rod ?
What a week-end ! Had a great time talking cars and of course talking about the Camel bug kicking everyone's butt in the 70's .
Was real pleasure meeting Brain Keegan over the week-end , as I new he had a big part in Australian drag racing but also
was right beside Peter helping .
Building of car , chop roof , crewing and more .
Met so many people , Peters friends from Orange , Ross Preen , Fremont Auto's Altered racer , Gatts family , Track helpers from CID , SID tracks .
The next stage in the cars return will bring smiles to many ( running motor)
