Record Attempt

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/62328/record-attempt

RodPenrose ·

After having some time off from the drag racing scene and due to the build up of my new drag car , I will now dust off the old car for a crack at the ANDRA national record for a naturally aspirated 4 cyl sedan - SS/C- . The current record is still held by Gary Berg from 1995 at 10.38 and 127.66 mph . I will be removing all of the turbo related junk off the engine and will rebuild it as a 2789cc with dual carbs . This engine back in 1996 in my old pan car @ 1657 lb's went 11.002 @ 122.46 mph .
I have freshened the Autocraft engine with a new 86mm flanged crank , new 6.1'' carrillo rods , a new set of cylinders , the old ceramic/silicon coated pistons have received a new set of custom low tension rings , the biggest camshaft that Pauter make { 343 dur , 446 lift } a set of highly polished lifters and with a compression ratio of 15.23 : 1 , the berg 58mm carbs , the high tech sunoco and vp race fuel , and the addition of a vacuum pump in a lighter and better set-up car should hopfully run into the 10 sec zone . I have been weighing everything that will not be going back on the car and so far have lost 116 lb's , thus bringing the car to around 1590 with the fat driver . I will be running the car at the compak attak round at WSID on May 19 and if the car is above 1600 lb's can be eligable for a sprot compact record as well . I will keep you posted as I go , ROD.

Dasdubber ·

Good stuff Rod, I'll be looking forward to how it runs in N/A form. Any changes to gearbox ratios given the removal of the turbo?

2443TT ·

Thats a good start. I'm keen to see a dyno figure before and after installation of the vacuum pump too.

Do you have any video of the engine running, or of the first quarter mile pass? I'd like to know what the biggest camshaft that pauter makes sounds like.

Cheers,
Ian

reub ·

NUTS....and I love it....

Look forward to seeing how it all goes Rod :thumb

helbus ·

I showed the missus this post and she really wants to see it. Any chance will make it to Victoria to race?

dangerous ·

Good stuff Rodney!
It will be nice to see the SS/C Record with an Aussie name next to it!

So I gather that this record attempt will be at the WINTENATIONALS?
There is NO minimum weight for SS/C record, but it has to be set at a National ANDRA EVENT.

For those that don't follow the CLASS SYSTEM in the "Sport Compact Group" series,
for cars like rod's the minimum weight is for TUBE CHASSIS cars of 1600lbs (727kg) or more.

The minimum weight in the same class for PAN CARs is 1750lbs. (around 795kg)

GO FOR IT DUDE!!

Correction :

ANDRA SS/C : no minimum weight or maximum engine size.

ANDRA "All Motor" : 1750lbs Pan Cars only, must be set at ANDRA event.

"Sport Compact Group" All Motor : 1700lbs for Pan Cars, 1600 for Tube Cars, max engine size 3lt(for Volksies)

Records need to be at an event that is a "record setting event",
and need to be backed up with in 1% if the first run.

Cant wait!

I have a copy of the time cards somewhere

farkenorsome...... hope someone takes some video when you run !!!!

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Good stuff Rodney!! So will you still compete with this car when you have your other car finished?? I guess we'll prolly see it at Warwick as well!!

1303Steve ·

Hi Rod

Good on you for having a go, is the driver going on weight reduction program as well?

Steve

dragvw2180 ·

Hope to hear that you reset the record, but why is there a penalty for running a pan car? Usually it is the other way around, they usually penalize a tube chassis car. Nice looking car, Mike

dangerous ·

That's what I was thinking Mike, it is madness.
But the promoter developed that rule and he was thinking outside the square.
Way outside in this case!

The records for tube and pan cars are two separate records within ALL MOTOR.

The Tube Cars generally weigh lighter, so that it will require less ballast to compete for THAT record,
thus allowing MORE CARS TO COMPETE.

It is a bracket racing class for now, so the different weights are not all that important and now
this will allow cars like Rodneys to compete. Where as before he did not fit into any classes.

If this rule means more competitors and spectators then I guess it is a good thing.
Otherwise we may not have had the oportunity to see Rodney run his car like this.

VWFREAK ·

Good to see you back in the swing of things.

RodPenrose ·

The engine is now in and almost ready . I am on the dyno in 7 days and am still 2-3 days away from initial start up . I will be using the same transmission with the gearing from the turbo days and should cross the line in 3rd gear @ 8700 rpm's at 120mph . If it happens to go quicker than this I will short shift into 4th to bring the rev's down . I am interested in finding out how a 3 speed transmission will go . The driver will not even fit into his race suit so I presume taking a really big dump before hand will be on the cards as excersise is not an option . I will post the dyno results and let you know the difference that the vacuum pump makes . I know that it has helped to the tune of 15 hp on a vw engine in the US . The new Ceramic exaught that I made should be back from HPC today and will post some pic,s tonight , ROD.

I have heard of guys using air pumps from the wreckers with ok results, not sure how much they weigh though? Moroso also make the pumps in 3 and 4 vane versions for around $800.

2443TT ·

Craig Torrens wrote:What's a vacuum pump :jesus
Its a crank driven pump that pulls all the air out of the crankcase.

With big pistons moving back and fourth inside an engine opposite each other at high speed it creates a lot of air movement inside the engine. The air on the underside of the pistons creates load and resistance, robbing power. The same air also causes drag on the crankshaft rotation.

By sealing up the case and pulling all the air out of it, these losses are eliminated. It also helps stop oil airation/foaming caused by crankshaft rotation.

Rod's also used low tension pistons rings that create less drag on the cylinder bores. This reduces the cylinder seal a little, but the vacuum pump also helps improve ring seal too.

A vacuum gauge tapped into your engine block will tell you how well your rings are sealing too which is pretty cool, cause blow by reduces crankcase vacuum.

BrisDubba ·

Just when I think I am starting to understand something- I read something like this and is scares me how little I know..

RodPenrose ·

The engine in now in and ready to start . It was a time comsuming process to make everything fit and work with what was already in the car . The linkage was a nightmare and the oil filter hoses took me over 5 hrs alone to mount . All looks good and am hope full of a trouble free start-up , ROD.

reub ·

Have you got video technology to post a video of the car running?

Would love to hear it!.

dangerous ·

Wow dude, awesome set of pipes!
What size are the tubes?
Is it still dry sumped?

RodPenrose ·

It started first go and is extremely loud . I am only using 98 octane to run the cam in , and am having serious doubts about the amount of heat generated from the entire package . The ceramic coating has already discoloured at the heads and the engine is pre-igniting really bad . I have lowered the timing back to 25 deg. and it still tends to back fire through the carbs . I think that this may be normal for a big camshaft , maybe ? . I have started it and ran it 4 times yesterday and am happy with the whole run in period . I will now remove the valve springs and replace with the race springs . I have the rev limiter set @ 4500 and it shoots lots of flames out the stinger . ROD.

It's on the trailer and ready for the Dyno first thing on Wednesday morning . I will post the results of the different fuels and the difference that the vacuum pump makes . It all looks good at this stage and I have never been happier with the way an engine has gone together especially with this engine combination . I am hoping for a trouble free run tomorrow and am looking to break the 250hp mark . Fingers crossed and ear plugs in , Ill talk soon , ROD.

westi ·

good luck .we all look forward to see your results.

OwenMM ·

Well after 8 hrs at the dyno today Rod asked me to put up some results here, This is a rough rundown of the day and Im sure rod will put up more accurate info and some dyno charts.

Rod stated at the start of the day he would be happy with about 180hp at the wheels, enough to break into the 10's.

First run up with the Sunoco Fuel the engine was heavily retarded (we thought about 25degrees but it turned out to be about 18 or 20 degrees total) and very rich mixtures it returned about 178hp only going to about 6500 as the motor was suddenly leaning off.

After some fiddling with the jets and the fuel log similar runs were recorded with nice stable mixtures.

The timing was then pushed up to 28 degrees and the next run suprised everybody, 230hp atw with the engine now misfiring at around 7500!!

After a lot of mucking around the MSD distributor was found to be at fault and next run 249.something hp!!!! Still with a misfire but now at 8500 and an issue with the fuel supply at the top end!!! According to the dyno operator based on other cars he has dynoed this would be over 330hp at the flywheel!!!!!

The engine did a heap of runs during the day and no oil leaks!! The vacuum pump wasnt removed for comparison runs as we ran out of time with the other problems. C16 was also tried but made about 5hp less.

The car still has some electrical and fuel issues still making a misfire and killing the top end. Fuel mixtures are 12.7ish at the leanest and timing is still fairly conservative so the motor may have some more in it!!

The record is in for a shakeup!!!:bounce

dangerous ·

Nice result!

By my calculations, if Rodney can get the car weight down to 1550lbs (with him),
it should run about 133mph.(based on that rear wheel number)

This is enough to get him into the very low 10s.(nines in a perfect world).
Bergs still hold the ss/c record at 10.38 I think,
so a trip up here to the winters may be worth while!

Would be nice to get the gear ratios done to suit.
133mph will be about 9000 in 3rd,
or 7000 in 4th.

OwenMM ·

Yeah, the right gear ratios would be nice. I think Rod has the right ratios but no time left now to change them, so it may not run that great on the weekend.

What surprised me with the motor was how broad and flat the power curve was, its definatly not peaky, the cam seems to work very well, which really surprised me. Big compression does wonders!!

Dasdubber ·

Fantastic numbers Rod - congratulation thus far! I guess the proof is in the pudding so I look forward to seeing how it runs on the strip! Best of luck.
Alan

fullnoise ·

Hey Rod,

249 rear wheel horsepower is pretty damn tough. I'd love to here that thing doing 8500 rpm!

Do the recommended air/fuel ratios change with the different fuels?

Do you run less timing with these fuels than you would with premium pump gas?

My optimum total timing ended up at 35 degrees which seems like a fair bit. Out of interest are you only running 28 degrees total or is that the advance?

Interesting post. Thanks for sharing.

Regards

OwenMM ·

It ended up 30 degrees, no advance locked distributor.

dangerous ·

SO!
Are you getting a drive Owen?

OwenMM ·

Yes Dave, I can now exclusivley reveal that I am driving

the golf buggy
Unless Rod cant squeeze into the suit:P

RodPenrose ·

After 9 hrs and about 40 dyno runs I ended up with 249.7 hp and 451.1 ft lbs of torque at the rear wheels . According to the dyno operator this equates to 334 hp . I don't belive this to be exactly correct however he tells me that a week ago he had a brand new SS comodore on the dyno and it calculated out to be 305 kw , the factory specs say 307 kw . I am more than happy with the results and am now looking to run some good mid 10 sec passes on Sat . I have an electrical misfire @ 8400 rpm and today Owen rewired the car . I am hoping that this will fix the problem and I have more revs to use . I will remove the engine tomorrow and fit a new clutch that will be aggressive off the start line . I think that with the power that I now have it will launch really hard . Maximim power was 249 @ 8000 rpm however I feel that it may be a little higher if I can use all the revs available . It made 150 hp @ 5100 , 175 hp @ 5400 , 200 hp @ 5700 and 225 hp @ 6600 . Maxium torque was 451 ft lbs @ 5800 rpm and @ 8200 rpm was still around 375 ft lbs . I ended up using 30 deg. total advance as the engine was still a long way from detonation and the A/F ratio was between 11.7 and 12.7 at higher revs . I have locked out the dizzy and have a full 30 deg. at idle . I also have a 20 deg. retard through the MSD box to make starting a little easier . The new 2'' exaught that I made seems to work good however it may now be a little small . I am using Sunoco Supreme Nos fuel and with an octane rating of 120 , it's good stuff . I also tried some VP c16 fuel and lost 10 rear wheel hp . To make more power I would have to increase the timing and take the chance of detonating . I unfortunatly didn't get the chance to run without the vacuum pump to see if it makes a difference but the engine has no oil leaks at all which really suprises me after the amount of work it has done already . I will post the results of racing soon , ROD.

Reub, i've had you reported to the VW police!

NO YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO CHOP UP THE OVAL AND MAKE A RACE CAR OUT OF IT!!! 😀

RodPenrose ·

Unfortunatley I went to start the car for a final tune at 6.00 pm on friday night and have broken the camshaft . I will not rebiuld it tonight so I will not be racing tomorrow . Sorry for the inconvienence I may have caused any person regarding racing . I will strip the engine tomorrow instead and find out what has gone wrong , ROD.

2443TT ·

Dam that sucks and after so much work too... :cussing

Are you going to source the same grind camshaft or switch to something entirely diferent?

RodPenrose ·

Whilst on the dyno on Wed , I had a head stud nut fall off . I didn't think much of this as it was one of the extra 8mm studs and not the main studs . However , after so much running on the dyno the stud had vibrated out . or I should say in . Maybe because of the vacuum pump , and the stud has been forced between the crankshaft and camshaft therefore breaking the cam into 3 pieces . I am disapointed that I didn't make it to the compak attack but am relieved that it didn't happen at full power . At this stage I need another camshaft , lifters , 2 pushrods and a set of cam bearings . I will also get the crank and rods cracktested and inspect the rest of the engine before reassembly and hopefully back on the track in 3-4 weeks , ROD.

kroozzn63 ·

Here is the Torque :

[ Edited on 20-5-2007 by dangerous ]

OwenMM ·

And here is Rodney's engine!

Craig Torrens ·

why do you need to add 800rpm ?

OwenMM ·

something to do with the fact the RPM is actually dyno speed, not engine rpm.

dangerous ·

OwenMM wrote:something to do with the fact the RPM is actually dyno speed, not engine rpm.
Ooh, that sounds like trouble.
I would have thought that the rollers would only be going 1/4 to 1/5 of the engine speed,
and then it would be a percentage, and not just an 'add-on'.

When I went to the dyno, it was quite crude also,
and the operator had to align the dyno scale
with the tacho in the car, and where the rev limiter cut in.

It is attention to details like this that give a lot of detailed info for future comparison on the dyno.

Afterall, HP is a calculation derived form the torque reading and RPM,
so if one is not accurate...you know what I mean.

Despite this I now enough to say that I think the rear wheel power IS correct,
and that engine IS a record setter.

dangerous ·

Also,
And this is no personal criticism of Rodney at all because I have the greatest respect,
Because of the formula to work out HP from the torque reading,
HP and ft.lbs are always equal at 5252rpm.
This is not the case above, so I assume you would have to divide the torque figure by the gear ratio used and this would be more accurate.

The HP at the wheels uses the ROLLER RPM and the ROLLER TORQUE in this formula:

HP = (Torque x RPM)divided by 5252

....to calculate wheel HP.

Hope this helps explain a few things.

OwenMM ·

I believe it is a percentage, but 800rpm is just a convenient figure Jason gave to Rod to keep things simple. The dyno I used to use at work we would run it up to 100km/h on the dyno before a run and enter the rpm so it would display the readout in engine rpm, regardless of ratio used. Still not real accurate as your relying on reading the tacho visually off the car.

We did start the day with an rpm input on one of the leads, but had to take it off as the lead from the dyno was a bit short and as the car would ramp up the lead was pulling. Wasnt long enough for rear engine cars.

RodPenrose ·

All of the new parts have arrived except for the camshaft which should be here tomorrow . I will rebuild the engine to the exact same spec's as before but with the addition of a new set of valve springs . The old springs were tested and only had 375 lb's of pressure @ .557'' lift , the new k 800 springs tested @ 467 lb's at full lift . I think that these are a little weak and the engine may have a little valve float causing a misfire at high rpm's . I will post some pic's and try to explain the best I can what I am doing during the rebuild . I have ordered 2 cams so I can build a spare engine in which I will inject lot of nitrous oxide into just to see what can be gained . I will be at WSID on June 23rd for a bracket meeting if all goes well , ROD,

westi ·

RodPenrose ·

Well I made it to the race to find out that the engine lid hits on the velocity stacks . I am a little disapointed with the performmance of the car as I only had one run without the engine lid and finished up with a 10.91 @ 118.16 mph . The car still has the turbo gearing and seemed to fall over when I shifted into 4th gear . I had launched @ 6600 rpm on the 2 step and with a track temp of 0 deg still ran a 1.47 60 ft time . Half track was a 6.86 @ 98.46 mph and the car is easy to drive . I even had time to look at the oil pressure guage after shifting into 3rd gear and I crossed the finish line at 6000 revs . I went to start the engine for the 2nd run to find a clutch/flywheel or starter problem . I will now pull the engine and find out the cause of the problem and change the box with the spare as the ratios will be better suited to the engine . I will run the car again in about 6 weeks time , ROD.

fullnoise ·

Gee, half a second off the national record on your first run! That's hardly disappointing. I'm sure you'll smash the record when you get the it sorted. Top stuff.

If you found it slow compared to your turbo set-up perhaps you could install a cup holder in the cabin?

Then you could smash the record while drinking a cafe latte!

CYA CT

dangerous ·

Yes that is a good result for Rod,
on his first run down the track in what seems like years.

The time does not yet show the HP potential of this combo YET,
and even with the extra 50 lbs of weight Rod will need,
it will still be enough to put his name there in the tube chassis 'Sport Compact Group All Motor' records List.
(no current record listed in that class)

Rod told me the car weighed 1308 lbs, plus 242lbs for rod.
The current Andra record for 'SS/C' is 10.38, and there is no minimum weight for this.
From what Rod has told me this is one record that is well in his sights,
and it will be nice to see it back in Australian hands.

Rod ran a 60 foot time of 1.47 which is pretty impressive considering the turbo gearing,
and only a tenth or so slower than his turbo car!

I am really looking forward to seeing this car run in person again.

RodPenrose ·

Well , I finally got a chance to pull the engine out to find out what went wrong . It looks like at this stage that I have a collapsed rear main bearing causing the flywheel to run out of centre and clearance the bellhousing . Due to this problem the starter had not meshed into the flywheel , but instead ground the top of the teeth off the ring gear . I will now once again strip the engine and fit a new set of main bearings . These bearings are not real old and at this stage I have no idea what caused this to happen . The flywheel has 6 times the end float that I started with , and I can move the crank sideways while it is still in the case . I have 9 days until I am on the dyno again for a test before running at a test and tune on Sunday 22 July . I will also replace the transmission with the spare as the ratio's have been changed . ROD.

Dasdubber ·

All the best for the re-rebuild Rod. Although please don't feel obliged to divulge the information, but what sort of ratios will you be using in your spare tranny?

Also what does that mean for your flywheel? Can you replace the ring gear alone? (forgive my rookie question - have to ask silly questions sometimes to learn more!)
Alan

dangerous ·

Were those KS flanged bearings,
or the made ones by Scat, Rodney?

RodPenrose ·

The spare tranny has the following ratio's , 4.57 r&p - 3.55 - 2.21 - 1.44 - 1.21 , with a 28'' tyre . the other tranny I ran had a 4.57 r&p - 3.13 - 2.06 - 1.26 - .95 with a 28'' tyre . I have worked out now that I should cross the line in 4th @ 8000 rpm =120mph , 8300= 125 , 8600 = 129 , 8900 = 133 .
The main bearings were a set of ks that were cut by Shawn and had done 3-4 passes as well as dyno time . I had the engine balanced after the cam breakage and am at a loss at this stage on the cause . I have had this happen years ago with a set of scat mains that were a shitty set , ROD.

dangerous ·

http://www.4secondsflat.com/Thrust_bearing_failures.html

Make sure you have 8 thou end float and 3 thou journal clearance...minimums.

Also chamfer the parting faces as shown in the above link.
I personally go right across to stop the oil from being scraped off the journal.
This step is sometimes forgotten when bearings are made from a VW one piece one.

Most cars with factory split mains have more clearance at the parting line built in to them, but not VW(except the center main that is split).

Optimum would be to buy 3 sets of bearings to use ALL MAINS with the split steelbacked shells,
and then use separate thrust washers (toyota or VW) like Keith has done in his engine.

Hope this helps.

I have had a big weekend and the engine in now rebuilt and in , the transmission has been changed and I am on the dyno 8.00 am Wednesday . The rear main bearing has been destroyed to the point of having .040 of thrust movement . This movement was between the case and the bearing with the bearing having all the wear . The case was still in reasonably good condition with a little bit of machine work required to clean up the rear main seal seating surface . The bearing also had .040 vertical wear and .060 horizontal wear thus causing the flange to mark the rear of the case . I have no idea of what caused this as the bearings where ks brand and not real old . I have taken over 4 hrs to modify a new bearing set to fit the case . The case was out of round by about 1/2 - 1/4 of a thuosands of an inch . The thrust area had survived and the new bearing now has .008 end float with .004 of crank to bearing clearance . I have modified the rear thrust of the bearing to allow more oiling , changed back to a 4 puck and stage 3 Kennedy plate , and will let you know the dyno results soon , ROD.

RodPenrose wrote:I have had a big weekend and the engine in now rebuilt and in , the transmission has been changed and I am on the dyno 8.00 am Wednesday .
How'd it go dude?!

RodPenrose ·

After a few runs on the dyno I had oil pressure issues and decided not to risk hurting the engine . It was dynoed in 4th gear with the new transmission and only made 222 hp at the wheels . I am a little dissapointed but this was at a lower rpm , different tyres , different ratio , and a different fuel . I have checked the oil filter to find a lot of aluminium specs that I have no idea where from , maybe I didn't clean all of the oiling system good enough. The oil pressure issue is gone and I think it was due to excessive heat { 250 deg } . I have removed the engine to check the end float and bearing wear , and will reset the clutch . All looks good at this stage and I will run the car on Sunday at WSID . I have had to change from the extreme nos fuel to the new supreme nos blend and at this stage I don't think it is as good , however I have just spent $ 2000 on a drum , so I will use it , ROD.

2nd run 15 psi tyres , 1.47 @ the 60 ft , 6.88 @ 98.48 mph at half track and 10.82 @ 117.82 mph . RESULT - no data , heaps of wheel spin or clutch slip , hitting rev limiter all the way down , on and off throttle . Rev limiter was set at 9300 but only showed 8400 on the taco .
3rd run 12 psi tyres , 1.45 @ the 60 ft , 6.73 @ 101.5 mph at half track and 10.67 @ 118.53 mph . RESULT - not as yet retrieved the data , no wheel spin or clutch slip , shut engine down 200 ft before finish as rev limiter was active . I am finally happy with the result as I did not adjust or play with the car all day . I have no oil leaks or any engine problems in any way and the car is so easy to drive . I do think I have a problem with the new digital MSD ignition control box as the rev limiter is activating far too early and I cannot use all the available revs . I will remove the MSD for repairs and will be back at WSID in 4 weeks , ROD.

I've had issues with an MSD DIS4 behaving in a simular way. It turned out to not be the rev limitor but was to do with the input signaling from the ECU that was telling the MSD to fire.

In my case all I had to do was adjust the coil charge and discharge time for the ecu to solve the issue, so although your not using and ecu, adjusting the dwell of your ignition trigger is worth a shot.

Lots of great info there rodney.
there is at least another tenth and 5mph in that car with the current power...EDIT:
2 tenths and 10mph if 222 RWHP and 1550lbs.

My sums say with 28" tyre and 4.857 diff with 1.217 fourth gear equals 8407 rpm at 118.53mph.

As for the MSD, I would double check that it is not just a low current supply from the battery.
Those MSD systems draw quite a current, and so low battery supply may still start the car, but lack spark energy under higher load.
Alternator in your future?!

Congratulations on a great effort to get the car done.

By the way,
are you aware that that is the quickest ET ever run by and Australian VW (normally aspirated)?!

Great effort!
