How does one make a ute out of a beetle?

As most know, #1 son pretty much screwed one of my beetles.
Although it's back on the road, it doesn't have a hope in hell of passing rego as it is.

Front is twisted, back is twisted, floor is sad.
Scrapping was the first option (& the one preferred by the wife)

Then I thought about a baja, which would lose the twisted bits, or a ute, or maybe a combination of both.

Baja I know how to do. Ute I don't.

They used to be reasonably common, so I'm wondering if theres a set plan for cutting off a beetle behind the doors. Or is it just a game of pot luck?

I would get in contact with Stoppa

he has this one for sale

For $1500 i would bother fixing your - maybe keep for spares??

Other than that - maybe give him a call and get a few ideas??

Not quite what I'm after & I think bringing home another project might get me divorced.

the rears were usually fibreglass, i think fiber-fab may still make them

I haven't seen many glass kits only 3 & 2 were mine,

(one day when I work out how to load pictures I will post some on this site.)

they are great as you only take out top back section leaving under backseat for battery & stoage.

only one real design flaw is you have to cut a section in the tray above the carby & put a nice lid here otherwise you can't get to the carby.

they are soooo easy to fit, but you MUST be perfect when cutting especially the section across rear quater as the tray section sits on here & the front of it needs to meet up with the back / window section, (allowing some room for a floor on top of tray,) & if you cut it too low it will look dodgy.

in between the fibreglass kit & the original body you use the guard beading to give a nice finish.

the one tonner / cab style beetles are far more common & probably more suited if you car is baldy damaged behind doors on rear quaters,

these kits don't come up often I sold mine last one about a year ago for $350 no-one realy was interesed....took a while to sell & I've had regrets since.

I meant to say "Badly damaged behind doors " (not baldy damage) LOL,

oh & they were a 4 piece kit

-back / window section
- tray,
- two rear guards that take huge wheels!!!

It's the one tonner style I'm thinking of.
If you have some pics, email them to me please.

Definitely an interesting animal.

But as I say, IF I have a go at this, I'm going to go tray back.
