The VW club of Vic have hired the track for the day so it's all VW racing!
$40 to race
$10 for spectators
Booking with the club is a must to get the number up.
It does NOT matter how fast or slow your car is as long as it doesn't leak oil and you bring your helmet you can have some fun.

For the love of god can someone go there and video tape the hell out of the whole event.
I'd like to see a real all australian VW drag DVD. Pit footage, interviews with car owners, car wark arounds, and drag footage.
PLEEEEEZZZZE!

Any updates?
VWMA Editor ·
Mike Kristen has had an accident. He's okay which is the main thing. Lack of traction because of the cold was the cause.
reub ·
Bugger....
VWMA Editor ·
The drivers at the Winternationals are experiencing the same thing this weekend. I was there last night, and cars were all over the track. Very scary and not much fun.

Man that is horrible news.
So glad HE is alright.
Cars can be fixed or replaced.
How did the other fellows go?
vwfastback ·
It was a fun day prior to the crash. It was great to see VW's lined up on the track and only the other "family" members racing too.
vwfastback ·
The weather was around 13 degrees, clear skies and very little breeze. Good for boosted cars.
vwfastback ·
The car seemed to be safe(kinda), but it had lost a wheel first.
vwfastback ·
Once on it's roof, it started to spin.
vwfastback ·
Still spinning
blutopless2 ·
the day was great fun.. great to see so many people out for a run down the strip.
Glad Mike was ok after his crash.
Demo run from the jet car was also pretty good.
hope to see more people at the next one and be in it myself too.
vwfastback ·
And finally stops.
vwfastback ·
There was more to the day than just the crash.
vwfastback ·
And now I will leave it up to others photos.

Thanks for the photos!
Any times?
jhp1 ·
any ne else got some more pics or info pi##ed I didnt get there.
Did many attend enough to make it an annual event I'd be there next year.
Dak-A-Tak ·
Very sorry and sad to here that!!!!!!!!!!!! Good guy that always pushes for the best !. Fantastic news that Mikes alright . God Bless !
Cold track is very hard to drive on but this week end at willowbank at the winternationals we had the same cold conditions .I think track temp was 14 to 16 deg but top fuel 4.67 et 309mph straight down the middle.
The unusual thing is many cars didn't have any problems
at all and many personal best times as well . Ben Bray topdoorslammer 6.09et ,Zappier 6.03et .
Pro stock 7.20's when sun was down ,very windy.
It gave me real respect for these guys !!!!!
ALSO Safety comes first (tech Inspections )
I really don't like all decisions that ANDRA makes but least Safety is world class .
BRUTUS ·
Brutus got a best time of 15.528 s at 83.35 mph (134 kph), from 92mm x 75.5mm, with 40 DCN's, on 98 octane ULP, using 195/65 x 14" street tires. 60ft time 2.151s.
Had a good run against Brian's red 968 3L Porsche (15.1s, 90.9mph), a close run with Chris A. in a shared 'Altona-racer' (unknown engine, 15.9s, 84.3mph), 2 really great close runs against Richard's ~2100-2200cc? "Herbie" (15.1s, 87.7mph), and Justin's ~1680cc maroon/cream bug (19.5s, 67.4mph) -- these may be not their fastest times, but are all I can quote -- from the time-slips I got.
Many thanks to the VW Club organisers for a really great day (Chris, Stuart, Dean & no doubt many others) - hopefully not the last! Only dampener was unfortunate acccident with Mike's "Cranky". Don't know exact numbers running, there were plenty of spectators. No doubt the best times will be put up somewhere... won't they?

Thanks for the info John.
Good to know that you finally had a chance to take Brutus down the quarter.
Good effort to all those guys that raced or spectated on the day to make it a success.
Boostn ·
Stylin ran 12.80 @ 107.
I ran a 11.30 @126 on low boost with a fuel pressure regulator problem.
The rack was quite cold and slippery so I was just doing some launches.
Thinking about it, it was a good decision. It was good to see Mike walk away in good spirit's. I think it was a good eye opener for a some people showing them how on edge these things really are!
It was good turn out with most real VW enthusiasts making it. But I would have thought by the talk that has been going around that there is a lot more hotties around Vic. Or maybe their cars just seem faster dragging on wet roads without the reality of a time card.
Hopefully more locals will show up next time and support the VW Club of Victoria.
Thanks guys!!

Just wanted to get some information straightened out that is either having a dig at the car and crew or simply worded unfortunatly (I hope its the later), I can asure you the car is as safe as drag cars can be. It is an Andra teched car meeting and in some areas exeeding andras world class standards as correctly quoted by dak-a-tak. The safety equipment on board did its job ensuring driver was not hurt(just a little shaken).
Traction was the problem (as mentioned by craig vwma editor.) not a loss of the rear wheel. The wheel tore free from the hub upon impact with the wall and not before and the wheel centre still remains firmly bolted to the axle hub. Unfortunitly the car struggled for traction all day the first run was also very skatie which is why the bottle was turned off for the second run.
It was an unfortunate end to Cranky mark one but i can asure you mark two is already in discussion.
Thanks to those who put on the day i hope you continue to enjoy such events and that the word gets around on what fun those unable to attend missed out on. Keep on racing but remember that drag racing is dangerous so take care.:thumb

good to see Miike is OK and unharmed

Make sure you Sydney guys keep in touch with Mike,
and keep him in high spirits.
After my accident I found a few aches and pains a few days later,
and really got down in the dumps.
Lucky I had my buddys around me to keep me interested in the scene,
and eventually back behind the wheel.
All us guys up here in QLD were glad to hear you were OK Mike,
and wish you well.
Dasdubber ·
Yep I will reaffirm the sentiments already expressed by the other guys above - glad to hear Mike is okay, and that plans are already being hatched for Cranky Mark 2. It would be easy to walk away which I think no-one could criticise, but to walk away with high spirits and motivation to stay in the 'seat' is great to hear.
All the best to Mike and crew
Alan

Hi Mike,
It was the latter. What I was refering to in the photos was that after you hit the wall, from where we were watching, it looked like the car had lost momentum and was safe. What we didnt see at that stage was the impact had removed a wheel, and a few seconds later, overturned.
We spoke after you returned, and I was amazed at seeing how intact the area protected by the cage and the roll bars were. As you pointed out, the tabs holding the shell to the chassis, the cross bars, the whole jungle gym that protected you, did far better than could be expected.
Even the engine appreared to have been saved any damage.
The car was making amazing power, and the run looked to be going strong and straight. In the high-def photos it is possible to make out the rubber on the track from your launch.
The most impressive display to the build of the car was that you walked back down the track to the pits when the car was removed. Not a scratch or bruise to be seen.
I look forward to seeing Cranky Mark II.
Dak-A-Tak ·
Well ! I'll be the first to say ,bring on the video's of crash and racing on the day .
I'm sure Mike won't mind ,as crashes are all part of our sport and it all is part of history of vw drag racing in this country.
Also Mike him self is a big boy and he is fine !
(Pictures tell a thousands words and it shows how hard drag racing is, for the nockers of our sport )

What a great day of drag action it was!!
You gotta love german engineering hey. Drive it there, flogg the guts out of it on a track all day and drive it 100k's home agaon no worries.
My best time was 15.55 @ 87.7mph. Bad news was that this was in the bracket race bit and I broke out by .4 of a second and lost to a really nice two tone green splittie T2. I think I chased him too hard with the split start.
It was an excellent day. Thanks to all that came out to make it a success. This will be a regular part of the VW Club Vic calendar now. Our hearts go out to Mike and crew. Hope you guys all made it back home ok.
Here some incar T34 action vid I took during the day. Didnt get any out of car stuff as I was too busy circulating the track.

Sorry vwfastback, Its not mike but a close friend and crew member just wanted to make sure people not at the track didnt get the wrong impression about the car. Was a good weekend bar the crash, great talking with you guys from melbourne eyery one was so supportive.
Mike is doing fine althought he has sustained a few briuses form a few sessions on the bendigo go-kart trying to keep up with the kids.

I have good video footage of the crash from behind and it shows Mike blast the tyres in second gear, as soon as he hit third the car went left into the wall. Out of respect I will not post the footage unless Mike ok's it. He has asked for a copy so he can analyse it from another angle, so he might even post it himself.
sorry guys.

No worries there Dave, I think he's already planing the rebuild as "CRANKY 2". Apart from the bruises he's in get up and go spirit.

Where are all the times from the other cars?! There were many more than have popped up here, standard & road/club hotties & warmies. Maybe the entrants don't know about AVD?
Having been somewhat disappointed with Brutus's time, I was interested to come across a web 'Calculator' to give 0 - 60 mph times using the 1/8 mile (660 foot) speed and time, which are given on the slip from Heatrhcote. Putting in B's best data (9.773s & 71.35mph) I was surprised to see the 0 - 60 time at 6.91 s. That sounds half-way decent!
The Calculator is at: http://wallaceracing.com/0-60_equation.php (This was given in a post from last year, came across it by accident.) Are such calculations reasonably reliable?
Also Dave B. gave me some pointers (in a separate thread) on using the 60 ft times as a predictor of performance/potential. Still lots to learn! I hope the Club runs this event again sometime!
In the last several posts, put up the last day or so, it seems that several more pic's have been put up. I can't see them, from this point on:
"The junka on Drag day 09-06-07
11.30 @ 126 mph
on low boost"
(but can see all the earlier ones). Can everyone else see the latest pics?

Well as Brutus said I did around 19.4 to 19.3 consistently with my r/t around 0.60 which I was pretty happy with, I had some clutch slipping issues but I doubt I would have gone much faster anyway.
I would recommend it to any one, it doesn’t matter how fast or slow your car is it’s all just a bit of fun.
I had a great time and even won the bracket racing competition and I have never been to the drags before 😀
Now I just have to get off my arse and get this new engine done, can’t wait to feel the power difference 😁
