Glass polishing/ buffing query????

Is there such a thing as glass buffing or polishing?

My front windscreen has a nice big swipe mark where someone has left the wiper to long without a decent rubber and thus scratching it.

Can this be fixed and if not anyone know the replacement cost for a front 1971 Fasty windscreen?

The only other way to fix is to replace with new glass

Yes, a good glass supplier could do it. But, for the amount it will cost it is cheaper to replace the glass. Besides the polishing will leave a distortion in the glass and you would most likely have to remove the windscreen for them to do it.

I would disagree....it depends how deep the scratch is and how old the glass is.I got my Kombi windscreen done several years ago by a mobile scratch repairer.Cost $50 and was completely gone.It was a 2 month old windscreen though so was worth keeping.If the windscreen was old I would have just replaced it.If the screen isn't laminated it wont work. DEK-A-DENT did mine.

If you want to try to fix it yourself. You will need a damp buffing pad on a drill or angle grinder and jeweller's rouge as a polish. That kind of polish uses diatomamceous earth as the medium. Brasso is diatomaceous earth and ammonia. That may work. I would not use swimming pool filter diatomaceous earth, I expect that it will be too coarse.

I've had scratches polished off by professionals for a few dollars and it has always worked. Rego might not like it if it causes too much distortion in front of the driver's eyes.
