yeah I like the black hubbies too.....the whole car just kinda works.....would be nice to see it with the chrome bars and headlight rings, but good for something different.

How does it go now? Is it a rocket?
What did you do for tranny ratios?

I've been checking out those pop outs on ebay and have been weary of biting the bullet and getting em. I trust that quality etc. is ok? They appear to look fine!

MISS VDUB ·
Hey Reub, i bought my pop outs on eBay from Brazil too, and i cant complain about them for the price. They came with everything ie: latches, hinge plate, new rubbers, hinge covers etc... They are also the good ones with the latch that attaches to the frame and not the glass.
I bought them on the Saturday and they actually arrived on the Thursday when i got home from work! Awesome, considering sometimes you can wait longer for local things to be shipped! We started fitting them tonight and they look awesome already! :thumb

To be totally honest I AM NOT chasing a dyno figure here guys. Obviously I'm looking to step things up in the power department, and there would probably be cheaper and easier ways to get the power... at the end of the day it will be interesting but I think the fun of driving it will far outway being able to show people a dyno sheet....
I would agree with that. cars are to be driven, not looked at! 🙂

Bloody couriers 😬
Good luck trying to get some $$ out of the courier company.
dangerous ·
Progressing well.
Found the case hole where the pulley fits was a bit ugly.
So modified the case and pulley for a lip seal.
dangerous ·
I removed this ugly thing,
And made up this, which is silver soldered on, for no leak suction
The oil pump actually had a loose shaft too.
You can see where the shaft had been spinning where it should be press fit.
dangerous ·
The replacement 26mm pump needed to be machined on the back face to align the oil holes,
and the suction hole was match ported and radiused.
I also plugged the outlet.
The case was plugged as well, to prevent oil pressure leaking back in any way.
The pump was then matched and radiused to suit Reub's pump cover.
dangerous ·
The case deck had some steps and unusual wear where the barrel sits.
This was because originally the case savers were only cut flush with the deck,
and once tensioned,
they sit a couple of thou proud...thus stopping the cylinder from sitting flat and causing leak and movement.
So I spot faced them down.
And then took a light cut off the deck.
You can see how worn it was in this pic.
Nice now.
Took about .005" off the surface.
dangerous ·
The next step is to check the oil clearances.
The main bearings were mounted in the case, and the same for the con rods.
For Reub's engine I want to see no less than 2.5 thou on the main bearings,
and no less than .002" on the rod journals.
The cam is also checked and I like to have a minimum of 1.5 thou.
The cam is trialled in the case to check for the alignment of the oil pump tang and for cam gear clearace of the pump body.
Mick058 ·
brilliant as always Dave - thanks for sharing and going to the effort of posting.
rocknrob ·
pretty to watch as usual dave👍
dangerous ·
Upgraded rod bolts.
Correct stretch is critical wh various different lubes requiring different torques.
Bearings mounted and clearance measured.
dangerous ·
Chromoly FW to replace the cast one:
Fitted roll pins and re-ballanced the FW/Clutch assembly.
The Kennedy pressure plate needed 24 thou shims
because the diafragm would have been(was) over centre otherwise,
thus losing clamp pressure.(explains the burn marks originally).
New replacement sump,
drilled and tapped for Reubs M8 mushroom allen bolts.
dangerous ·
Raceware Head Stud Kit, best you can get.
Oh crap now the barrels dont fit.
dangerous ·
Clearanced for studs and also the case nuts.
Must have been riding on these case nuts before.
And washed in the kitchen sink with hot soapy water.
dangerous ·
I should mention that the washing of the barrels is at the final assembly time and AFTER all machine work and honing.
Now the head studs are too long to clear the inlet manifold, easilly shortened..lucky it is at trial assembly stage to find this.
Check deck heights:
dangerous ·
Machine piston tops to correct very minor variances and re-balance.
Check piston to valve with light springs:
(camshaft was "dialed in" a couple of degrees adanced long before this check).
And machine heads to make it all sweet.
dangerous ·
Manifolds:
Match port with this:
dangerous ·
The chambers and ports were hand blended and CCed.
Both valves and seats needed to be machined to optimise piston to valve clearance.
New rings were gap filed.
Barrels and heads were then trial fitted.
Spirolocs are a pain, but the best way to retain the pins in the piston.
dangerous ·
Geometry was corrected with 30 thou shims under the rockers and an adjustable pushrod to get the length correct.
This photo shows the pushrod in line with the adjuster at half lift. (.280").
Then make the pushrods the correct length.
These are Manton .058 wall chromoly.
Springs were shimmed and travel of valves set to 1.5mm over valve lift. (only needed one shim of various thickness under each valve spring).
dangerous ·
At final assembly some areas required machining so the valve covers wuld clear:
Just about done:
Ahhh!

Over 7500-8000 rpm I believe. Never used them myself, although my old 2165 did turn 9000 it also had oil issues and no drains.....

I'm not a huge fan of the cooling system there (haha, get the pun...), but only because it looks abstract - But, things are designed the way they are for a reason, so i wish you the best of luck with it. 🙂

Sorry Ruebs-been a bit slack lately keeping up with whats going on here-just found it-now for a read.
Camo ·
Hi Reub,
I am going to have to ask you a question and I dont think many others can answer this. The reason the question comes up is due to me speaking with someone the other night at WSID and he was telling me all about his STIDUB (hint, hint). Dave even had me wanting to go out and buy a rex motor 😂
Now for the question (sort of), if you can answer it yet. Most people go over to the dark side as they say and fit a WRX motor. Well, now you have been on the dark side for quite some time, whats it like coming back over to your original maker - VW. Are you enjoying the VW engine experience.
And you will have to let us know how the driving experience feels when the time comes and you fire her up.
Thanks, Kevin
humpty ·
reub wrote:Kevin, I don't consider I've crossed over or come back to be honest....
My first registered beetle was my VWRX. I'd bought an unregistered old 68 beetle a while back, with plans to build a supercharged aircooled, but I wanted to go retrotech (past and present in the same car). At that time there were bugger all WRX powered beetles around, and I really wanted to build something all out. Not having a VW history I was not really influenced by any one style of modifying veedubs, hence the way VWRX turned out. Parts of the original 68 beetle form part of VWRX too.
I love things that are out of the normal, having a big love for hotrods and the like. There has always been something cool about making a volksie go like it shouldn't. Putting a WRX engine in the back was a logical way to keep a flat 4 but introduce the late model efficiency and reliability. Retrotech cars are cool in my book.
I also have an affection for the humble aircooled engine too. Sure they are really old technology, and cost an absolute forturne to produce really good power, but a hypo aircooled is again, really cool. Taking and old engine and making it produce 3+ times what it did from the factory and then amazing people on the strip etc is a buzz. Making a 300kw HSV worried down the 1/4 makes me smile everytime I think about it. Ask Peter Page what got him into Volksies. Cruising in a worked torana and then being left by a tricked up aircooled powered beetle is priceless.
I'm neither for or against either means of motivation in a beetle (infact I'd love a 20b in one). The boosted growl of a rexy is totally different to the sound of a naturally aspirated 8000rpm aircooled screamer, and I'd suggest so is the driving experience. I think I know which one I'd rather for the daily drive, but that would only be my preference. I will say that I'm over stuffing around with 44idf webers, hence the efi setup being installed on this incarnation of the 1915...
Modified or not, re-engined or not, we're all here as we love volksies❗
Here, here...
Camo ·
Reub,
Having just read your reply to my question, I was not intending to label you at all or offend you so I am sorry if I have. With regards to crossing over to the dark side, I believe this to just be an expression used by others to describe when people get rid of their VW engine for another brand. And I did not know how your first car was built or what it started from.
I would love to have a WRX motor in my car (ask Mick058) it just that I dont have that kind of money to complete such a project.
And I full heartily agree with your comment - "Modified or not, re-engined or not, we're all here as we love volksies".
So again, I appologise if I offended you in any way.
Regards, Kevin

Hi Reubs,
I like your set up, looks neat with the throttle cracks on the far side, Black fuel fittings and the top mounted thermo fan. Just woundering
if you have, or thinking about a WOT spring so if the thottle is wide open, and the pedel has still a little more to go, your thottle leaver
doesn't pull the fuel rail forward giving bad inj seal.
You're a smart man you probably have it sorted already.
Love the mod cons on the vw engine
Keep up the progress😁

the cooling system on that engine where did u get it from reub ive never seen it before sorry
Craig S ·
The cooling system has had me thinking for a while as to whether it would make it easier to fit a supercharger and intercooler in the engine bay without having to have stand offs. One problem would probably be drawing air off the manifold and intercooler.

Craig - now you are thinking like me👍
As a project update I've finally got the car to startup ready. I discovered the throttle position sensor provided is stuffed, so ordered a new Haltech one today. I also have a faulty fuel fitting which was leaking, which subsequently allowed fuel onto the regulator fuel pressure guage, and ruining the clear 'plastic' lense (you'd think being a fuel pressure regulator that the components would be fuel resistant!!!!!!).
I'm positive the car will be running again next weekend. I'll keep you all posted.

there every reason to rev it there.

If its got more at 8000 than when it drops down low for the next gear,
there every reason to rev it there.
I doubt it will Dave, the HP drop off rate is quicker than the actual climb rate.............so if it dropped 5hp in 300rpm, and this drop rate is only going to get quicker, then it would probably produce the same HP at 7300-7500rpm as it would in the mid 4000rpm range.......Like I said though, take it to 7500-8000 on the dyno and find out !!
Congrats again Reubs, at least Darwin now has a potentially quick aircooled VW for the drags 😎
BeetleJuice ·
Hi Rueb
Stout engine there. So the Subes is for show, and the Volksie is for GO!!!!!😀😀

wow, CLEAN DYNO SHED!!
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
mmm wonder if the Mrs would consider buying somewhere like that!!
I'd consider it heaven anyway LOL
Congrats on the results Reuben. Good job!! Now to see if she's quicker than the VWRX..........
colonel mustard ·
Reub. car looks soooooooooo good. good job 🙂
humpty ·
I still like those Radar's with that finish.... I wonder where my old set ended up?
Craig Torrens ·
I reckon its time for the Drags 👍....................should be good for 14's ?
Craig Torrens ·
Sik Maaaateee 😂
matberry ·
Great vid Reubs. 👍
cnfabo ·
WTF???? DID I READ THINGS CORRECT, your new 128bhp engine just went BANG!!!!!!! UH OH......DAVE RUN AWAY FROM FROM YOUR PHONE.....
cnfabo ·
TELL ME THERES OIL IN THERE,IT LOOKS VERY DRY...
Smiley ·
What!!!???
It can't be!
Smiley 😎
Craig Torrens ·
Mate that didn't last long...and it didn't even make it to the drag strip.😠
Baja Wes ·
Poor Reub, was on his way to the drags. It's a pity to see such a sad end to such a cool project. 😢
matberry ·
WTF👎👎👎
Sorry to see.
Major autopsy required.
matberry ·
Question is, was it a rod, rodbolt or valve.......
hellbugged ·
🙁
Sides ·
WTF !?!?!
Wasn't expecting to read something like this this morning.
Definitely feel for ya dude....
🙁
Craig Torrens ·
matberry wrote:Question is, was it a rod, rodbolt or valve.......
Probably more like a seizing big end bearing......I doubt its a part failure.
Or maybe the piston let go due to the top being machined off it ??
bajachris88 ·
I just went through this whole thread last night.
Mate, i'm so sorry to hear. How devistating.
Nuffin could have got weakened or cracked on the case/barrel during rough delivery? with the cracked pallet and all?
Talk about a living hell... 👎
vassy66T1 ·
That's heartbreaking Reuben.
I hope it isn't too long till you get to smile at your VW again. 🙁
Gracey ·
Dude, that's gut wrenching!!
Looks like a rod let go, or maybe a piston.
Either way it ain't pretty.
STIDUB ·
ouch, will be interesting to see what failed 👎
Craig Torrens ·
there's a clue......it's has run a big end.
Look at the colour and thickness (or lack of) of the bearing on the left..
JVLRacing ·
Lack of lubrication?...Was there no strange noises from the dyno run?
555bug ·
I've done a big end before and you will be able to tell from the journal ans it will be out of round. My 2c is that you would have heard a big end failure before it let go. I'm thinking further up the line, gudgeon pin or a lean out on a single cylinder?
Either way Reub, that blow. Lets start a collection to get this fixed?

mactaylor ·
sorry to hear ruebs, i think you need a tall glass of whisky.
71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·
looks like the timiing was bit out cause there is marks from the valves on the piston head.
Gracey ·
71-BEETLE-SEDAN wrote:looks like the timiing was bit out cause there is marks from the valves on the piston head.
More likely valve float.
I'm with Craig after seeing those big end bearings (or lack thereof) it seems it started with the bigend.
humpty ·
Totally bummed out Reub.... Feel for you mate....
This is the fear we all have with a fresh performance engine.... It is a gamble.... You never know when something catastrophic will happen....
The heads and valve gear look salvageable, the bottom-end looks toast.... The crank and three of the rods might be ok... The rest of the gear is all there.... Awesome work has been achieved.... Fit the 1776 of your mates, run the efi and cooling system as you have it, and get out on the road asap...
Enjoy it....
The love will return, and you will do it again....

Its always hard to look past the carnage to identify the cause of the problem. After seeing these new pics my thoughts are:
Seeing the camshaft was broken I'd be inclined to think the valve/piston interference happened after the engine let go. Also, the marks look fresh. If they were old there would be traces of carbon hammered into the piston from the valves too. This isnt the case, so there was no issue with interference before it went bang. It wont have been valve float with the valve train setup that the engine was running.
Chances are that the cam was broken by the rod when it parted company with the piston. Once that happened, it all went nasty from there.
The rod bearing isnt a good enough indicator to see if the engines oil pressure surged or not. Its been hammered to death after punching a hole through the block, and after that al the white metal disappeared. Similarly other the rod bearing on number 2 cant be used as an indicator of oil surge, because after the bang that journel will have lost oil pressure and you would expect depris and white metal damage to that bearing as a result. The journels on the crank dont appear to be burnt enough either. Only the mains can tell that story properly, and even then there will be some colateral damage.
Based on these new pics my best guess is a lean out either to incorrect mapping of the ecu, or fuel pressure issue. It appears to have happened on all 4 cylinders, so its not an injector issue (based on what has been shown).
Look at the colour of the spark plug electrodes from head 1+2. While the combustion chambers are all pretty sooty, the electrodes look bone white. The blow up happened at full load/wide open throttle and it was shut down immediatly after that. Having a look at the plugs removed from the left head will tell more of a story.
Chances are the lean out happend that quickly though, that the electrodes won't be melted, and only the colour can be used as a guide. Whats is actually left of the plug from number 4 and if it got an oil bath will also be a factor.
Email me the ecu map Reub, or have a look at it yourself. Fuel values at 7500 rpm + max load should be close too what they are where the engine is making peak torque at 5100 rpm, or perhaps a little less as some tuners tend try to keep the AFR's constant at the top of the rev range. I tend to make it very rich 500 rpm from the rev limitor incase a gear is missed, and to keep temps down a bit.
Craig Torrens ·
maybe if the conrod was broken, but how does a complete conrod which is attached to the crank swing around and hit the cam.....it can't.
I think you will fine the cam snapped after a chunk of metal tried to go through the straight cuts.
My opinion of the sequence : seizure to the bearing, locks the conrod for a split second, conrod then try's to spin with the crank as its locked, conrod then smashes piston as its next in line, barrel then goes as conrod hammers it......At 7000rpm this would happen very quickly and cause this amount of damage easily.
This motor has forged pistons, and there is no melting of the head or plugs....this canage was not caused by a "split second lean out".
Whatever we agree or disagree on though, the fact remains that Reubs now has a $10,000 pile of scap metal, so what does he do now ?
Baja Wes ·
I think the spark plugs look fine. Certainly not lean enough to cause sudden failure. Running too lean will erode the electrode of the plugs, the electrodes look fine in what pics we can see.
If the cam died first then there should be a very bent valve. Part of the oil ring is up the intake port indicating the motor had turned a number of times after eating the piston before the cam broke.
matberry ·
My vote primary cause of mechanical failure; big end. Cause of big end failure???
johny rotten ·
yep burnt rod/ big end has picked up for sure
was that dodgy oil pump cover used ?
if so thats your answer
johny rotten ·
mm I see only 1 port is used
thats OK
JVLRacing ·
Does this not make people worry when engines gettin built to have them Engine dynoed?....
Wouldnt it be better for warranty value?
How many builders would garrantee there work?
I ask the question cause there is alot of money put into this motor...$$$$
johny rotten ·
🙄
the big end is burnt
This engine would have made some nasty noises long before the catastrophic failure
IMO it should have been shut down much earlier
It would have been an easy fix if it wasn't run to destruction
matberry ·
johny rotten wrote:It would have been an easy fix if it wasn't run to destruction
Easy to say in hindsight.
What oil was in it??
JVLRacing ·
JVLRacing wrote:Lack of lubrication?...Was there no strange noises from the dyno run?
❗as above said
Craig Torrens ·
Lack of lubrication would have locked the motor, via the main bearings I would have thought.
johny rotten ·
no
the big end is always the first to lock when lubrication oil surge happens
matberry ·
Yep, bigend fed from mains, so second down the line, and first to feel effects of oil pressure/volume loss.
#4 too, which is supplied by center main, which has to feed #4 and #1 bigends, where both #3 and #2 have feed from their own mains.
johny rotten ·
is it possible that crank flex at high rpm could cause low oil pressure or volume at that centre main ?
Then in turn Big end failure ?
matberry ·

I hope not

Thats crap mate - stick it on the shelf and take your time, or you'll just get frustrated and sell it all!
All the best Reub. Talk soon

whats the autopsy on the motor?
Any update on future plans ?

Oh there's plans alright. Another DB build with a healthy increase in displacement. Im sure Reub and Dave will be posting pics of the new engine as it goes together.
